Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.

"This is definitely not for me." That’s what I kept telling myself as I watched this psychological thriller with erotic undertones. In fact, I considered stopping, but just before the halfway point, something happened that piqued my curiosity and compelled me to keep watching. I know absolutely nothing about the backstory—neither the book nor the author, Colleen Hoover—so this review is based solely on what I saw on screen. I realize that those who have read the book will have a more informed perspective on the film; that’s not the case for me, so my take will be, shall we say, rather superficial. Skipping a film starring Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway would have been a crime I didn’t want to be guilty of, so I sat down with a rough idea of what to expect: a twisted love story.

We begin with Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), a novelist who has not achieved the level of success she desires; she has published several books, but none of any real significance. One day, her luck seems poised to change when she runs into—by pure "coincidence"—Jeremy Crawford (Josh Hartnett), the husband of a well-known author who is no longer able to write. He wants to hire Lowen to finish the novels his wife can no longer complete. His wife is Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway), an extremely famous and popular author who has fallen into a catatonic state—leaving her incapacitated—following a rather strange and mysterious car accident. Since this is something Lowen has never done before, she hesitates, taking some time to consider the offer before finally agreeing—having first secured a better financial arrangement.

To take on this job, Lowen moves—temporarily—into the Crawford mansion, with the goal of connecting with Verity, getting to know her, and immersing herself in her writing style. Her office is also located there, containing notes and jottings that Lowen can put to use. But then, something changes everything—a discovery that makes her stay increasingly uncomfortable. Among the many files, Lowen finds what amounts to an autobiography—a manuscript that was never published. To her shock, the contents are truly deranged: a series of twisted, disturbing confessions that completely shatter her perception of the family. The complication is that Lowen gradually begins to grow fond of these people, which proves dangerous; given that Verity’s mind is an enigma, trying to discern whether these confessions are fact or fiction becomes a form of torture. Ultimately, this is a thriller packed with tension and intrigue, though, in my view, its execution felt quite chaotic. I’m a fan of plot twists, but when the device is overused, it becomes jarring—you barely have time to process one development before the next shift occurs.

The plot has a "romantic" tone—though I use that term very loosely—since the relationship is essentially forbidden. There’s a touch of fantasy and eroticism, with scenes that, while not overly graphic, are certainly explicit. At the same time, there’s an odd sense of suspense; you can tell there are secrets, and it feels as though someone is always lying. The first half-hour was a real headache for me—I didn’t even want to keep watching, as this type of film doesn’t usually appeal to me. But then came the first "twist," which made me hold off on turning it off; from that point on, the anticipation just kept building, so I ended up finishing it. It was purely out of curiosity—not because the film is a masterpiece. There are so many plot twists packed in that the whole thing becomes almost comical; beyond the element of surprise, they actually end up eliciting a laugh. It also reaches a point where everything becomes painfully obvious—I’d much rather have one well-executed twist than five that don’t really add anything.

I should mention that the film features a couple of well-executed jumpscares—you might not expect them given the nature of the plot, but they’re there, and they’re actually quite good. As for the performances, I wouldn’t call them outstanding; I’ve seen better work from Anne Hathaway—she’s certainly not a bad actress, but this is nowhere near her best. Dakota isn’t exactly a powerhouse performer either; she has a very specific niche where she shines, but outside of that, she’s quite average. And then there’s Josh Hartnett—who seems to gravitate toward dark, eccentric characters, as we saw in "Trap"—he was just okay, I suppose. I think the cast may have led people to set expectations that ultimately weren’t met. The ending is left quite open to interpretation—it’s up to each viewer to decide what to make of it. This film just isn’t for me; objectively speaking, it didn’t leave much of an impression—it’s really just another run-of-the-mill movie. Give it a chance, though; it might just hook you. It runs for nearly two hours. I’ll leave the trailer here so you can take a look.

Hi! I haven’t seen this movie yet, but your review really hits the nail on the head regarding how exhausting it can be when there are just too many plot twists! When a film tries to surprise you every five minutes, it usually ends up losing its impact. Best wishes! :D
