Few series truly make me look forward to the day new episodes drop; usually, I only remember to watch them when I see they’ve been released. Lioness is different; I found myself impatiently waiting for Sundays to catch the next installment of a plot that is electrifying from the very first minute of the season. The show combines absolutely everything needed to make it the success it is: conspiracies, intrigue, military action, diplomacy, drama, double agents, international conflicts, and—most importantly—a story that reflects current global realities. And do you know how I know that? Because they reference the events of January 3rd of this year here in Venezuela. That means parts of this season were filmed quite recently. The quality has steadily improved from season to season, culminating in this latest one—which, for me, is the best of the lot so far.
Pocas son las series que de verdad me motivan a esperar el día de los estrenos de sus capítulos, generalmente cuando los veo publicados es que los recuerdo; con Lioness no es así, impacientemente me tocaba esperar hasta los domingos para ver la nueva parte de una trama que es electrizante desde el propio minuto 1 de la temporada. Esta serie tiene una característica y es que combina absolutamente todo para que sea el éxito que es: conspiraciones, intriga, acción militar, diplomacia, drama, dobles agentes, conflictos internacionales y lo más importante, es una historia actualizada a la realidad del mundo. Y saben por qué lo se? - porque hacen referencia al 3 de enero de este año con lo que pasó acá en Venezuela. Esto quiere decir que parte de esta tercera temporada recién se terminó de grabar. Tres temporadas que han venido subiendo de calidad entre ellas para llegar a esta última, para mi la mejor de todas hasta ahora.
First off, let me answer the usual question: do you need to watch the whole series? Yes. You can watch this season on its own, but the ending only makes sense if you’ve seen the entire series. We follow Joe (Zoe Saldaña), a high-ranking U.S. officer in charge of a division (Lioness) that operates in the shadows to carry out missions no one else can. What sets this season apart is that it moves away from the Middle East conflict—previously the central focus—to dive straight into the war between Russia and Ukraine. Essentially, there was a Russian asset (a high-value individual) in Ukraine who posed a potential threat; Joe and her team arrive, extract the asset, and bring him back to the United States (a scenario very similar to the events of January 3rd).
Antes de todo respondo la típica pregunta, hay que ver toda la serie? - si. Puedes ver esta temporada por si sola pero su final es entendible solo si la has visto completa. Tenemos a Joe (Zoe Saldaña), una oficial de alto rango de los Estados Unidos que tiene a su cargo una división (Lioness) la cual opera desde las sombras para hacer las operaciones que nadie más puede. La particularidad de esta temporada es que deja a un lado el conflicto en medio oriente, el cual había sido el eje principal, para introducirse de lleno en la guerra entre Rusia y Ucrania. Basicamente en Ucrania había un activo ruso (persona de alto valor) que podía convertirse en una amenaza. Joe y los suyos llegan, lo extraen y se lo llevan a los Estados Unidos, (algo muy similar al 3 de enero).
What is the real catalyst for this season? Joe getting kidnapped. Yes—an officer of such high rank and standing, and on American soil, no less. Everything else takes a back seat as attention and resources are focused entirely on locating their officer. That is when the political maneuvering begins, as they try to figure out which of the many enemies the United States has around the world could have committed such a foolish act; after all, from their perspective, carrying out an operation like that—and in that specific manner—is nothing short of a fatal mistake for which they will eventually pay the price. The season unfolds across two timelines: one featuring a free Joe making strategic moves amidst the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, and the other showing a captive Joe, revealing the torture she endures and the plans her captors have for her. I’m telling you, this is truly one of the best series out there; it is so well-crafted and realistic that you genuinely feel as though you are speaking directly with the Secretary of State and the heads of the CIA and NSA.
Cual es el detonante real de esta temporada? - que a Joe la secuestran. Si, a una oficial de semejante rango y jerarquía y en suelo americano. Todo lo demás pasa un segundo plano por lo que la atención y las fuerzas se avocan para dar con el paradero de su oficial. Es aquí cuando comienza todo el juego político en tratar de descubrir quien de los tantos enemigos que puede tener Estados Unidos en el mundo pudo haber cometido tal tontería porque claro, para ellos hacer eso y de la forma en como lo llevaron a cabo no es otra cosa que un error fatal el cual pagarán tarde o temprano. Esta temporada va en dos líneas temporales, una con la Joe libre moviendo sus fichas en todo este conflicto con Ucrania y Rusia y la segunda la de Joe secuestrada que nos muestra las torturas y lo que planean hacer con ella. De verdad les digo algo, esta es de las mejores series que hay porque está tan bien hecha, es tan real que de verdad sientes que estás hablando con el secretario de Estado, el jefe de la CIA y de la NSA.
I consider this the best season of all because the sense of urgency is at its peak—and you can really feel it; having Joe held captive is a devastating blow to both her team and the government. Witnessing the tension, the anguish, and the action driving the efforts to locate her is absolutely riveting. As for field action—specifically the military kind—we see it right at the start in Ukraine with some spectacular scenes; it looked like a battlefield teeming with drones (a hallmark of the Ukrainian approach). The series excels in this regard; its military conflict sequences have always been top-notch. Naturally, however, the action pauses momentarily to regroup and launch a manhunt the moment the slightest lead on Joe emerges. Many might think the diplomatic side—the meetings, phone calls, and decision-making—is boring, but nothing could be further from the truth; watching this unfold, especially with such a talented cast, is addictive.
Digo que es la mejor de todas las temporadas porque el sentido de urgencia es máximo y eso se siente, tener secuestrada a Joe es un golpe durísimo para su equipo y para el gobierno; ver la tensión, la angustia, la acción que hay detrás de todos los esfuerzos para dar con ella es algo que hipnotiza. La acción de campo, esa que es más militar, acá solo se ve al principio en Ucrania con unas escenas espectaculares, aquello parecía un campo de guerra lleno de drones (algo muy característico de los ucranianos). En este departamento la serie es top, siempre sus conflictos militares ha estado a la altura. Pero como es obvio todo esto se "detiene" de manera momentánea para reorganizarse y comenzar una cacería ante la mínima pista que surja de Joe. Muchos piensan que la parte de la diplomacia, esa que se da con las reuniones, llamadas y toma de decisiones es aburrido; nada más alejado de la realidad, ver esto y con los actores que hay es adictivo.
Piecing the puzzle together while the tactical team storms in anywhere to find Joe is 200% entertaining—and that’s how almost the entire season plays out. The finale offers an interesting twist; while you might have seen it coming, it’s still incredible because it opens a door to the past that was thought to be closed and involves members of her own team, making the upcoming fourth season look very promising. When it comes to performances, we’re talking about the perfection I mentioned in the title: Zoe Saldaña herself, Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Kelly, Laysla De Oliveira, Jill Wagner, Genesis Rodríguez, and a long list of others. Everyone—and I mean everyone in this cast—stands out; they shine in their own unique ways and roles. There is a very strong, powerful bond among the women on Joe’s team—she recruited them, which explains the supreme loyalty they show—and even the men are willing to lay down their lives for her. I believe this dynamic will be crucial for what’s to come. For me, it’s some of the best TV I’ve seen because it has everything—and above all, it’s high quality. I’ll say it again: if you can, watch at least the first season so this one makes more sense to you. I think this review speaks for itself, so I don’t even need to explicitly recommend it. Eight episodes packed with pure adrenaline. Here’s the trailer.
Ir uniendo el rompecabezas al mismo tiempo que el equipo táctico irrumpe en donde sea con tal de encontrar a Joe es 200% entretenido y así es casi toda la temporada. Su final es una vuelta interesante, es verdad que uno lo imaginaba pero igual es increíble porque abre una puerta del pasado que se creía cerrada además de que involucra a parte de su equipo por lo que la cuarta temporada tiene una muy buena pinta. Hablar de actuaciones es hablar de la perfección que menciono en el titulo: la propia Zoe Saldaña, Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Kelly, Laysla De Oliveira, Jill Wagner, Genesis Rodríguez y un largo etc; todos, pero es que todos en este elenco sobresalen, a su manera y en sus roles, pero destacan mucho. Dentro del equipo de Joe hay un vinculo muy fuerte y potente entre las mujeres, ella las reclutó, de ahí a que veamos una lealtad suprema, incluso los mismos hombres dan la vida por ella. Creo que esto será determinante para lo que viene. Para mi es de lo mejor que he visto porque lo tiene todo y sobretodo de calidad. Les repito, si pueden vean por lo menos la primera temporada para que esta les haga más sentido. Creo que la reseña habla por si sola por lo que no hace falta que se las recomiende. 8 capítulos llenos de pura adrenalina. Les dejo el tráiler por acá.
