A finales del año pasado y por casualidades de la vida me topé con una serie cuyo protagonista me sorprendió bastante por el hecho de que si no me equivoco es la primera serie que él protagoniza y si, hablo del gran Sylvester Stallone. Uno en realidad no está muy acostumbrado a ver a estos pesos pesados del cine en la pantalla "pequeña" pero también es cierto que esa tendencia está cambiando mucho en los últimos tiempos cosa que es buena porque abre una ventana a que veamos historias y actuaciones bastantes decentes de actores que capaz no están acostumbrados a estos formatos. Tulsa King es la prueba de que por más que pase el tiempo la magia sigue estando allí, una magia la cual es transformada en un gran papel de Stallone.

At the end of last year and by coincidence of life I came across a series whose protagonist surprised me quite a bit by the fact that if I am not mistaken it is the first series that he stars in and yes, I am talking about the great Sylvester Stallone. One is not really used to see these heavyweights of cinema on the "small" screen but it is also true that this trend is changing a lot in recent times which is good because it opens a window to see decent stories and performances from actors who may not be used to these formats. Tulsa King is the proof that no matter how much time passes the magic is still there, a magic which is transformed into a great role by Stallone.

A quien no le gusta una buena historia de mafiosos donde lo único que importa son los códigos de la familia y comer cannelonis? - y si a eso le agregamos una trama llena de ilegalidades, drogas y disputas territoriales entre unos pueblerinos y una pandilla de motociclistas? - pues si amigos, no leyeron mal, toda esa mezcla que a priori puede parecer un poco absurda son los ingredientes que hacen de esta serie una de esas joyas que todavía no han sido descubiertas por la gran mayoría de las personas y que el día de hoy se las vengo a presentar. Así que sin más hablemos un poco sobre esta nueva historia que una vez que la vean estoy seguro que no dejara indiferente a nadie.

Dwight Manfredi o el General (Sylvester Stallone) es un capo de la mafia al cual sus mejores años lo dejaron atrás gracias a una larga condena en la cárcel, si fue culpable o no ya es tarea de ustedes al ver la serie. Manfredi cuando sale de prisión se da cuenta que muchas cosas cambiaron, que nada es igual a como él las dejó hace un poco más de 25 años, esto como es normal genera un choque con sus antiguos compañeros o familia por lo que estos deciden mandarlo a Tulsa, una ciudad de Oklahoma para que se establezca allá y comience de cero. La cosa es que Dwight no es tonto, a ver es un capo, conoce de sobra como funciona la mente criminal, por lo que decide apenas al llegar a dicha ciudad sureña formar un grupo, un sequito, una "familia" que lo ayudarán a construir lo que será su nuevo imperio o base de operaciones.

Dwight Manfredi or the General (Sylvester Stallone) is a mafia boss whose best years are behind him thanks to a long prison sentence, whether he was guilty or not is up to you when you watch the series. Manfredi when he gets out of prison realizes that many things have changed, that nothing is the same as he left them a little more than 25 years ago, this as usual generates a clash with his former colleagues or family so they decide to send him to Tulsa, a city in Oklahoma to settle there and start from scratch. The thing is that Dwight is not stupid, he is a kingpin, he knows how the criminal mind works, so he decides as soon as he arrives to the southern city to form a group, a little team, a "family" that will help him build what will be his new empire or base of operations.

Pero pasa algo y es que esta ciudad, Tulsa, es una muy tranquila en donde este tipo de cosas no pasan a menudo por lo que criminales no hay, o por lo menos no a simple a vista; es así entonces como ese grupo que acompañará a Dwight está conformado por una serie de personajes de lo más particulares, personas que probablemente nunca hayan visto un arma de fuego. Es en este momento cuando todo empieza a andar, vemos como lo que era una ciudad tranquila se comienza a convertir en algo más, la vida de mucha gente se pone de cabeza y los problemas empiezan a llegar poco a poco. A lo largo de la serie veremos como va lidiando con todo eso además de los fantasmas de su pasado que también estarán por ahí, los lazos de la mafia son para siempre y eso es algo que Manfredi pronto descubrirá.

But something happens and that is that this city, Tulsa, is a very quiet city where this kind of things do not happen often so there are no criminals, or at least not at first glance; it is then that the group that will accompany Dwight is made up of a number of characters of the most particular, people who have probably never seen a gun. It is at this moment when everything starts to go, we see how what was a quiet city begins to turn into something else, the lives of many people are turned upside down and the problems begin to arrive little by little. Throughout the series we will see how he will deal with all that plus the ghosts of his past that will also be around, the ties of the mafia are forever and that is something that Manfredi will soon discover.

Puede que a estas alturas todavía sigan sin estar muy convencidos pero ya les digo que estamos ante una gran serie con una historia que poco a poco va a agarrando fuerza y profundidad. Los primeros capítulos son como un preámbulo, una presentación a este mundo criminal, como se manejan las cosas y cuales son las intenciones de Manfredi a partir de su llegada a Tulsa. Sinceramente hay más acción de la que esperaba, unas escenas muy bien logradas y explicitas porque si, la violencia es un factor muy importante acá, es el medio de entendimiento de esta gente y lo dejan muy claro. Pero también hay un poco de ese drama familiar por el hecho de estar alejado prácticamente toda una vida de los suyos y que quizás piense que no sea tarde para sanar ciertas heridas, de hecho una parte de Manfredi entiende que para lograr eso tiene que alejarse de ese mundo cosa que es imposible y esa es una lucha interna muy presente en la trama.

Maybe at this point you are still not very convinced, but I'm telling you that this is a great series with a story that little by little is gaining strength and depth. The first chapters are like a preamble, an introduction to this criminal world, how things are handled and what are Manfredi's intentions after his arrival in Tulsa. Honestly there is more action than I expected, some very well done and explicit scenes because yes, violence is a very important factor here, it is the means of understanding of these people and they make it very clear. But there is also a bit of that family drama due to the fact of being away practically all his life from his family and perhaps he thinks that it is not too late to heal certain wounds, in fact a part of Manfredi understands that to achieve that he has to get away from that world which is impossible and that is an internal struggle very present in the plot.

La trama no es complicada, es un tipo que llega de la nada y comienza a hacer ruido en una ciudad totalmente desconocida para él. Es hasta cómica la forma en como poco a poco se va a apoderando de cosas ya establecidas, de negocios, de tratos, de mismas personas; confieso que en esos primeros episodios me reía porque no entendía como era eso posible, como llega alguien y te quita lo que es tuyo así de la nada hasta que después caes en cuenta que el poder de la intimidación y persuasión es más grande que nada en muchas ocasiones. La serie no decae, nunca lo hace, siempre pasa algo, siempre hay una arista más de ese entramado que poco a poco se va haciendo más enredado y grande y que es lo que hace que la historia sea tan adictiva.

The plot is not complicated, it's a guy who comes from nowhere and starts making noise in a city totally unknown to him. It is even comical the way he gradually takes over things already established, businesses, deals, people themselves; I confess that in those first episodes I laughed because I did not understand how that was possible, how someone comes and takes away what is yours out of nowhere until later you realize that the power of intimidation and persuasion is greater than anything on many occasions. The series doesn't let up, it never does, there's always something going on, there's always one more edge to the plot that little by little becomes more entangled and bigger and that's what makes the story so addictive.

Es así como en un dos por tres tenemos muertos, asesinatos, palizas, la policía, el FBI, la mafia en Nueva York moviendo hilos y un grupo de delincuentes locales que no se quedarán tranquilos ante la llegada de un extraño a su ciudad. Todo es una bomba de cosas que pasan en simultaneo que la verdad llaman mucho la atención o por lo menos a mi, es una de las series que más he disfrutado, por lo básica pero atrapante de su historia y por el gran personaje que es Manfredi y que es lo que de Stallone me pareció una locura. Sylvester es un actor de 76 años y la fuerza y temple que se le ve acá es impresionante, porque entrega escenas de pelea, de acción, de cierta agilidad y nunca se le va bajo de ritmo, mis respetos totales.

This is how in no time at all we have deaths, murders, beatings, the police, the FBI, the mafia in New York pulling strings and a group of local criminals who will not stay calm with the arrival of a stranger to their city. Everything is a bomb of things happening simultaneously that really catches the attention or at least to me, it is one of the series that I have enjoyed the most, because of the basic but gripping story and the great character that is Manfredi and that is what I found crazy about Stallone. Sylvester is a 76 year old actor and the strength and temper that you can see here is impressive, because he delivers fight scenes, action scenes, with a certain agility and he never goes off the pace, my total respect.

Pero también es uno que supo interpretar el personaje, ese papel del mafioso intratable y duro que no le tiene miedo a nada ni a nadie es uno que le queda como anillo al dedo a Stallone y cuando hay que hacer gala de esa parte sentimental y blanda también lo hace muy convincente. En realidad esta serie toda es él, toda gira en torno a él y la lleva en sus hombros con una ligereza pasmosa. Los demás personajes son secundarios pero todos son vitales para que la trama ande, ninguno es prescindible, cada uno a su manera le otorga algo especial a la historia, una mini trama, que le da un aire más humano a esta locura.

But he is also one who knew how to play the character, that role of the ornery and tough mobster who is not afraid of anything or anyone is one that fits Stallone like a glove and when it is necessary to show off that sentimental and soft part he also does it very convincingly. In fact, this series is all about him, everything revolves around him and he carries it on his shoulders with an astonishing lightness. The other characters are secondary but all are vital to the plot, none is dispensable, each in their own way gives something special to the story, a mini-plot, which gives a more human air to this madness.

El nivel de sorpresa en mi caso fue grande, la serie es un palo como hablaríamos coloquialmente y es por eso que le doy un 9/10 sin pensarlo mucho. Tengo entendido que habrá segunda temporada debido al éxito que está teniendo y no es para menos. Es una serie producida por Paramount de la mano de MTV por lo que para verla tendrán que irse por los caminos verdes del internet. Consta de 9 episodios de unos cuarenta minutos cada uno; totalmente recomendada. Les dejo el tráiler para que tengan idea de lo que es.

The level of surprise in my case was great, the series is a stick as we would speak colloquially and that's why I give it a 9/10 without thinking too much. I understand that there will be a second season due to the success it is having and it is not for less.
