I find it so unfortunate that today’s generations won’t get to know what a truly good movie is, because these days many of us—myself included—think that movies from the past were so good and so well-made that they’re nothing like the ones we have now. So I want to tell you about a movie that I really liked and that, even though I didn’t see it when it first came out, I knew right away when I finally watched it that it was a work of art.
It’s the movie A Beautiful Mind, released in 2001—more than a decade ago. I watched this movie on the recommendation of a friend—in fact, she was the one who practically forced me to watch it—and honestly, I’m grateful because it really was a movie I thoroughly enjoyed watching. Although it isn’t as old as other great movies, it might seem a bit dated to some people; however, in my opinion, it’s one of the best from that era.
Me parece algo tan lamentable que las generaciones de ahora no vayan a conocer lo que realmente es una buena película, y es que hoy en día muchos, incluyéndome, pensamos que las películas de antes eran demasiado buenas y tan bien hechas que no se parecen en nada a las de ahora. Así que quiero hablarles de una película que me gustó mucho y que, aunque no la vi en su momento, cuando la vi supe que era una obra de arte.
Se trata de la película Una mente brillante, salida en 2001 hace más de una década. Esta película la vi por recomendación de una amiga y de hecho ella fue quien prácticamente me obligó a verla, y la verdad lo agradezco porque sí que fue una película que disfruté muchísimo ver. A pesar de no ser tan vieja como otras buenas películas, para muchos podría ser algo antigua para ver; sin embargo, es de las mejores de la época en mi opinión.
The movie is set in the 1940s and tells the story of a young man named John who is, so to speak, a mathematical genius. He was admitted to one of the best universities and has a very clear goal: to come up with an idea that will change everything. The truth is that, thanks to his abilities and hard work, he achieves a great deal, but just as he’s at the peak of his academic career, things take a slight turn.
Suddenly, he’s recruited by a secret team where he has to devote himself to helping the government in some way, and that’s when everything starts to get complicated. Something I love about the movie is that you don’t see a single thing coming—you feel just as confused, desperate, and anxious as the main character, and in fact, the atmosphere and the way the movie is shot make you feel exactly how he feels.
La película está ambientada en los años 40 y cuenta la historia de un joven llamado John que es, por decirlo de algún modo, un genio matemático, quien entró a una de las mejores universidades y tiene una meta muy clara, la cual es poder conseguir una idea que lo cambie todo. La verdad es que con sus capacidades y su esfuerzo logra muchísimo, pero estando en su mejor momento académicamente hablando las cosas cambian un poco.
De pronto es reclutado por un equipo secreto en el que tiene que dedicarse a de algún modo ayudar al gobierno, y es aquí donde comienza a complicarse todo. Algo que me encanta de la película es que absolutamente ninguna cosa la esperas, te sientes tan confundido, desesperado y ansioso como el protagonista, y de hecho el ambiente y la forma en la que la película está grabada te llevan a sentirte cómo se siente él.
The movie made me reflect on how something we love so much—and something we’re good at—can also become something that harms us if we don’t get any rest or maintain the right balance, because as the saying goes, “Everything in excess is bad.” Things can go wrong if we don’t take even a brief break to let our brains relax and lead a normal life.
On the other hand, it makes me think that there are people who are very talented in many different areas, but those talents can be overshadowed if their mind isn’t completely healthy. So sometimes we might misjudge someone, thinking they’re struggling with basic tasks when they used to be so smart, but the truth is that they aren’t feeling well—and when the mind isn’t well, nothing inside works properly.
La película me hizo reflexionar en cómo algo que amamos tanto y en lo que somos buenos, si no tenemos descanso ni tampoco un enfoque adecuado, puede convertirse también en algo que nos pueda causar daño, porque como bien se dice "todo en exceso es malo". Las cosas pueden salir mal si no nos tomamos aunque sea un descanso breve para que nuestro cerebro se relaje y tenga una vida normal.
Por otro lado, me hace pensar en que hay personas que tienen muchas habilidades en diferentes aspectos, pero éstas pueden verse opacadas si la mente no está completamente sana. Por lo que en ocasiones podemos juzgar mal a alguien pensando que le cuesta hacer cosas básicas cuando antes era tan inteligente, pero la verdad es que no se encuentra bien y cuando la mente no está bien nada adentro funciona correctamente.
On the other hand, our social nature leads us to seek companionship wherever we can, and when it’s somehow taken away from us, we’re left with a void we can’t explain. But when you yourself were the one who somehow clung to an idea that didn’t exist, that must be one of the worst feelings there is. I have to say it’s an excellently made movie with actors who did an impeccable job. I loved watching it years ago and then watching it again now and feeling exactly the same way, so if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it—you won’t regret it.
Por otro lado, nuestra naturaleza social hace que busquemos en donde sea compañía, y cuando esta de algún modo nos es arrebatada llega a nosotros un vacío que no podemos explicar. Pero cuando fuiste tú mismo el que de alguna manera se aferró a una idea que no existía, esto debe ser una de las peores sensaciones que hay. Debo decir que es una película excelentemente hecha con actores que hicieron un trabajo impecable. Me encantó verla hace años y luego volverla a ver ahora y sentir exactamente lo mismo, así que si no la has visto te la recomiendo y no te vas a arrepentir.
