A good romance movie is always a treat, and today I want to tell you about one that, in my opinion, is among the best romance movies I’ve ever seen. It came out a little over two decades ago, in 2004, and since then it has been one of the films that has brought the most tears to the eyes of those who’ve seen it—but beyond the tears, I think it’s one of the films that has touched the most hearts.
It’s The Notebook, and yes, the title seems simple, but the truth is that it’s a beautiful, very well-crafted story. In it, we meet our main characters, Noah and Allie—two young people living in the 1940s with completely different lives and in completely different places—who nevertheless cross paths and leave a lasting mark on each other’s lives.
Just as only the pure and deep love of youth can do, it caused anything superficial—such as economic status, the opinions of others, and even their own doubts—to fade into the background, because what they felt was still there and didn’t change at all. However, as with everything in life, things happened that—while they couldn’t extinguish their love—did cause them to part ways, and time took its toll, as each went their separate ways and built their own lives.
But love is always present within us despite the passage of time, and this was also true for Noah, who dedicated part of his life to demonstrating, in a pure and sincere way, the true meaning of love—until he unexpectedly reunited with the person he once loved so deeply, only to realize that everything he had believed and everything that had caused him pain was not true, and that outside influences had simply played a role.
This film stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. In my opinion, both are excellent actors, and in this film—even though it was released more than two decades ago—they did a wonderful job. Watching it, they make you feel the deep love they had for each other in their youth, and yes, they make you experience that feeling in a very pure way—a love that is willing to do anything without expecting anything in return.
You could say it’s a sad movie because, honestly, I cried a lot while watching it, but the truth is that if we look a little beyond the pain it conveys, it’s a very real story of what love can be in a person and how it brings out the best in you. Obviously, when you love in an imperfect world where everything comes to an end, it’s hard to find a perfect resolution; yet the feeling remains, and having experienced it—or having it in your life—makes you feel grateful and happy.
This movie made me think that sometimes young people confuse many things with love, distorting the concept of it a bit; but no matter how much time passes or how much society changes, the truth is that love will always be the same—the purest and most profound way of feeling something for someone, to the point where, selflessly, it makes you want to give everything for the other person.
On the other hand, those on the outside who don’t understand the magnitude of what you’re feeling might think that, in some way—for your own good—they want to keep you away from someone who isn’t good enough for you. However, beyond any superficial factors that may have influenced you—such as money and social status—the feeling transcends all of that, and when the reasons run deeper, it’s not something you can simply stop feeling so easily. I love that it goes beyond anything considered important today when, in reality, it isn’t all that important.
For me, it’s a beautiful movie that will definitely bring tears to your eyes, but it will also remind you that even in a difficult world, you can find something as beautiful and sincere as love. So if one day you feel like watching a movie with a heartwarming story, this is an incredible choice—and if you’ve already seen it, it’s always a good time to enjoy it again.
