Luca Paguro es un monstruo marino, contaba con 13 años de edad, vive cerca de la costa de la Riviera italiana. Tenía muchas interrogantes sobre a la vida terrestre, la veía como un mundo mágico, sabía pocas cosas que su abuela le decía, pero sus padres cancelaban las conversaciones sobre el mundo terrestre.
La mamá de Luca siempre le advertía los peligroso que eran los humanos, que no se acercara a la superficie porque podían matarlo, pero su abuela, le decía a la de Luca, que tarde o temprano iba a pasar lo que tanto evitaban, y era que Luca iba a buscar experimentar tener contacto con lo terrestre.

Llegaron Luca y Alberto a un pueblo italiano llamado Portorosso, con la meta de comprar una Vespa para que juntos pidieran viajar. Es donde comienza toda esta aventura. Llegando al pueblo Luca y Alberto tienen un mal encuentro con Ercole Visconti, el que había ganado la Carrera de la Copa Portorosso, donde conocen a Giulia Marcovaldo una adolescente que los ayuda a escapar de Ercole. Se hacen amigos y deciden unirse para la competencia, Giulia con el gran deseo de ganarle al tramposo de Ercole, Luca y Alberto con ganas de ganar la carrera para obtener dinero y comprarse la Vespa para viajar por todo el mundo.
