This movie is one of nollywoods best movies, it was hyped a lot that time it came out. But then, I eventually had the opportunity to give it a watch too. It is titled Lisabi, The Uprising. Lisabi, the uprising seems to be a true life story that follows the story of the Egba land and the great Oyo empire.
Lisabi happens to be a warrior; he also has a friend named Oshokenu, and they happen to be very good and close friends. But then, the kind of life they were living in under the Oyo Empire as Egbas isn't convenient for them at all. The Oyo empire always request for tributes each an old everytime and it's getting too much, not to talk of the other things they do and how they often oppress them.
Then a time came when the tax collectors of this Oyo empire came again to take tributes from the Egbas, and because the Egbas were tired already, they felt somehow about it; that was how Oshokenu acted up and challenged them. As the tax collectors saw this, they retaliated too, and it led to war. But before that actual war, something happened.
After Oshokenu challenged them and they did the same too, they went as far as going to sexually assault and molest Oshokenu's wife; this made her commit suicide, and the anger in Oshokenu rose up. He made sure to not let it go easily; he ran after them, they fought endlessly, and he made sure to kill a good number of them too before he was later killed.
Lisabi felt the hit; his friend was dead, but then the last words from his friend kept ringing in his head. Oshokenu had told him before breathing his last to make sure not to let his death be in vain. And that was how the preparation for war started. Lisabi began what looked like communal farming on the outside, but he was actually building an army of them underneath.
It wasn't an easy fight, believe me; the great Oyo empire is not one to just rise against that easily. They (the Egbas) had a lot to lose, yet they did their best, fought with the Oyo Empire, and, at the end, they won. It isn't easy to challenge a more powerful system and come out victorious; Lisabi did it and came out victorious.
Lateef Adedimeji played the role of Lisabi, and Mr. Macaroni played the role of Oshokenu, and trust me, they both killed that role. Lateef, we all know, knows how to act being emotional a lot, so having to fit in as a warrior, I feel, would be hard for him. But then, he proved me wrong and, as always, proved that he's actually an actor who can fit into any role.
Ibrahim Chatta also acted in that movie, and you can tell the kind of actor he is too, very good... I mean very, very good. Even though he played/acted as a wicked person in this movie, I still love him; I just had to understand it was the role he's being given too play.
Now, let's talk about the movie itself. I mean, the display of culture, the costumes, the fluency of language, the weapons, the traditions, and all of that—honestly, they did very well. I love how it feels like we were actually taken back to those times, when the world wasn't civilized yet. Even the graphics and the action scenes, they tried it looked so real.
A great movie I must admit, I love how that it shows that rebellion would always come at some cost, am I also love how Lisabi knew that he won't be able to fight alone and that he would need to have people together with him to give him a high chance of winning.
Lisabi the Uprising is a must-watch.
