One of the songs on my playlist—make a note of this great track—today I want to share with the scrobbledlife community this magnificent song that really gets my ears going whenever I hear it; I can’t help but sing along and remember it as a huge hit.
And if I tell you about Camila—a Mexican pop-rock band formed in 2003 in Mexico City by Mario Domm, Samuel “Samo” Parra, and Pablo Hurtado—who are singer-songwriters, musicians, composers, and music producers—they’ve had quite a long career in the music industry. I could tell you that I’ve been listening to these songs for as long as I can remember, you can imagine my rebellious teenage years with this pop rock—hahaha—my hair swept to the side and dressed in black, hahaha, that’s literally how it was. Today I’m bringing you the song “Mientes,” which is about heartbreak, betrayal, and the pain of discovering that a partner was pretending to be someone they weren’t.
So here are the questions I’m asking you: Have you ever been let down? Have you ever discovered that someone you loved deeply was pretending to be someone they weren’t? Have you been lied to so much that you’d rather not fall for it anymore? These are the questions I’m asking, and if you don’t relate to them, I’m really glad to hear it.
Here are the lyrics to the song “Mientes” by Camila
You You came into my life to teach me You You knew how to set me ablaze and then extinguish me You You made yourself indispensable to me, and, and
And with my eyes closed, I followed you If I was looking for pain, I found it You’re not the person I thought you were The one I believed in, the one I asked for
You Lie You hurt me and then you regret it There’s no point in you trying anymore I don’t feel like feeling anything anymore
You show up Just when I’m about to forget you Find your way somewhere else While I search for the time I lost Because today I’m better off without you
I’m Once again remembering who I am Knowing what you give and what I give There’s no room left for you in me, and, and, and
And time did its thing, and I understood Things don’t just happen for no reason You’re not the person I thought you were That I believed you were, that I asked for
You lie You hurt me and then you regret it There’s no point in you trying anymore I don’t feel like feeling anything anymore
You show up Just when I’m about to forget you Find your way somewhere else While I search for the time I lost Because today I’m better off without you And today I’m better off without you Oh-uh-oh-oh
You show up Just when I’m about to forget you Find your way somewhere else While I search for the time I lost Because today I’m better off without you Because today I’m better off without you Because today I’m better off without you
I like to share information and fun facts about this song. This time, it was written by none other than Mario Domm and Mónica Vélez. It was released in 2009 as the first single from their second studio album, Dejarte de amar, and even won two Latin Grammy Awards in 2010 for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Let’s get to what interests us: the parts of the lyrics that I loved and that made me want to make this my favorite. Of course, sometimes I pick out parts that resonate with me personally—but that doesn’t mean that’s how I feel right now. One of the lines I liked was, “You came into my life to teach me— you knew how to understand me and then let me down; you made yourself indispensable to me.” This implies that this person came into her life in a positive way, full of hope, and then suddenly, just as they arrived, they left, destroying everything she had built. “You’re not the person I thought you were, the one I believed in, the one I asked for”—she realized they weren’t what she expected, and at some point, she gained a different perspective. “You hurt me and then you regret it, there’s no point in you trying anymore”—a way of saying she’s tired of all the pain and deception, that it’s no longer worth sticking with him. What can I say? The lyrics are pretty intense; they’re very direct. I like the background atmosphere they create; I love that rise and fall in her voice—it was incredible.
I’d love to hear from you in the comments—whether you’ve ever heard it, if you liked it, if you’re just discovering it, or if it’s not your kind of music. Cheers!!!
