Hello film and television lovers, I hope you are doing well and having a great week. Sometimes I watch movies that aren't very well-known; I choose them almost at random because the plot or the title catches my attention. This time I watched A Bit Of Light, a story directed by Stephen Moyer. It belongs to the drama genre, where we can see how our decisions complicate life and keep the things we love most away from us, which is exactly what happens to the protagonist of this story. The movie tells us the story of a forty-year-old woman named Ella (Anna Paquin) who, as a result of poor decisions and a severe addiction to alcohol, loses custody of her two young daughters. This leads her to constantly reminisce about what life was like when her daughters were near, how things were before alcohol wreaked havoc on her life, her motherhood, and the way she is perceived by her father, her ex-husband, and her daughters.
In the midst of despair over not being able to be near her daughters due to a restraining order, she constantly visits places where she used to walk with them. One of those places is a park not far from the house where she lives with her father. She spends most of her time there watching the children, but mostly observing the young girls and the normal, beautiful relationships they have with their mothers. It is a way for her to be closer to her daughters, though it also causes her immense pain as she tries to reclaim a piece of what she lost.
It is not easy for a mother to lose her children, let alone to be constantly reminded that it happened because of an addiction. Ella is now sober, but she carries an enormous weight of guilt, and almost the entire movie plays out in a theatrical manner, showing that she cannot simply move on; she desperately wants to win back the time, the trust, and the love of her daughters. But it isn't easy—old habits make her feel incapable of being with them. Amidst all this, Ella finds a small sense of comfort in a young boy named Joseph (Luca Hogan), who also spends a lot of time at the park and approaches her to chat because he sees how lonely she is. The two begin to form a sort of friendship that, although looked down upon because Ella is an adult and Joseph is just entering adolescence, becomes a lifeline for both of them against their own demons and the difficult realities each faces.
The story moves quite slowly, and although I liked how it addresses a reality like addiction and a mother's loss due to this condition, I feel I didn't connect deeply with the story. I did enjoy how the two characters (Ella and Joseph) were brought together, as this gave the film more purpose and felt like watching a bond between two people of different ages who manage to connect and draw something positive out of a negative situation. I liked both performances—it felt as though they were mother and son, and that part of the story was very sweet.
The rest focuses on how her father, Alan (Ray Winstone), lives in constant fear that his daughter will make even worse mistakes than in her past. Yet, it also portrays someone deeply concerned who has not only lost closeness with his granddaughters, but also lacks the knowledge and tools he wishes he had to help his daughter. It's a difficult situation, and I could feel genuine chemistry between father and daughter on screen.

The ending was somewhat open—it suggests that things might improve, but doesn't reveal too much. Joseph and Ella find in each other what they so desperately needed: that mother-and-son dynamic. I feel that part of the story gave more meaning to the overall drama surrounding the loss of Ella's daughters and the lack of love and attention Joseph received from his own family, who treated him with total indifference. Thus, both found a refuge and a way to ease their own pain. It isn't the best movie, but it leaves you reflecting on these types of situations. En ocasiones veo películas que no son tan conocidas, las elijo casi al azar porque me llama la atención la trama o el nombre de la película. En esta ocasión vi A Bit Of Light una historia dirigida por Stephen Moyer. Es de género de drama donde podemos ver cómo nuestras decisiones hacen que la vida se complique y que lo que más queremos no pueda estar cerca de nosotros y así sucede con la protagonista de esta historia. La película nos cuenta la historia de una mujer de cuarenta años llamada Ella (Anna Paquin) quién producto de malas decisiones y una fuerte adicción por el alcohol pierde la custodia de sus dos hijas pequeñas. Esto la lleva a recordar constantemente cómo era la vida cuando tenía a sus hijas cerca, cómo eran las cosas antes de que el alcohol hiciera estragos con su vida, su maternidad y la forma en la que es percibida por su padre, su ex esposo y sus hijas.
En medio de la desesperación por no poder estar cerca de sus hijas por una orden de restricción, busca constantemente ir a lugares donde solía pasear con sus hijas. Uno de esos lugares es un parque no muy lejano a la casa donde vive con su padre. Allí pasa la mayor parte del tiempo viendo a los niños, pero más que todo observando a las niñas y cómo es la relación tan normal y bonita con sus madres. Es una forma de estar más cerca de sus hijas aunque también se causa un gran dolor a si misma por intentar recuperar algo de lo que perdió.
Para una madre no es fácil perder a sus hijos, mucho menos recordar constantemente que la forma en la que pasó fue producto de una adicción. Ella ahora se encuentra sobria, pero la culpabilidad que carga es enorme y casi toda la película va de forma teatral mostrando que ella no puede simplemente seguir adelante, ella desea poder recuperar el tiempo, la confianza y el amor de sus hijas. Pero no es sencillo, hay viejos hábitos que la hacen sentirse incapaz de poder estar con ellas.
En medio de toda esta situación Ella consigue un poco de consuelo con un chico llamado Joseph (Luca Hogan), quien pasa también mucho tiempo en el parque, y que se le acerca para conversar con ella ya que la ve muy sola. Ambos empiezan a crear una especie de amistad que aunque no es muy bien vista porque Ella es una adulta y Joseph apenas va a entrar en la adolescencia. Consigue que esta unión sea para ella y para el un salvavidas de sus propios demonios y difíciles realidades a las que cada uno se enfrenta.
La historia es bastante lenta y aunque me gusto todo el asunto de como hablan acerca de una realidad como las adicciones y la pérdida de una madre por esta condición, siento que no conecte demasiado con la historia. Me gusto que unieran a los dos personajes (Ella y Joseph) porque esto le dio más sentido a la película y se sintió como ver una relación entre dos personas de diferentes edades pero que encuentran unirse y sacar de lo negativo algo mejor. Me gustaron las actuaciones de ambos, se sintió como si fueran madre e hijo y esa parte de la historia fue muy bonita.
El resto es sobre cómo su padre Alan (Ray Winstone) está constantemente temiendo que su hija cometa errores peores a los de su pasado. Pero también muestran a alguien sumamente preocupado que no solo ha perdido la cercanía con sus nietas, sino que también no sabe y no tiene las herramientas que quisiera para poder ayudar a su hija. Es una situación difícil y pude sentir esa verdadera química entre padre e hija frente a la pantalla.
El final fue algo abierto, como que muestran que las cosas tal vez podrían mejorar pero no dejan saber demasiado. Joseph y Ella encuentran en ambos lo que tanto necesitaban, esa figura de madre e hijo y siento que esa parte de la historia le dio más sentido al drama que ocurría en general con la pérdida de las hijas de Ella y la falta de amor y atención que recibía Joseph por parte de su propia familia quienes lo trataban con total desinterés. Así que ambos encontraron un refugio y una forma de poder aliviar sus propias penas. No es la mejor película pero te deja reflexionando sobre este tipo de situaciones, espero puedan verla y me dejen en los comentarios que les pareció 💬🥹.
