She recommended I watch a rather lesser-known 2002 film called Murder by Numbers. Directed by Barbet Schroeder, the movie centers around the murder of a woman that is initially suspected to be the work of an obsessive partner or a serial killer. However, the film goes much deeper, featuring a great performance by Sandra Bullock, and I really enjoyed how the story unfolded. So, I invite you all to read on 😶🌫️.
The plot introduces us to two young men: Richard Haywood (Ryan Gosling) and Justin Pendleton (Michael Pitt). Richard is the typical high school student who doesn't do very well in class, but he possesses charisma and a apparent confidence when it comes to his personality and demeanor. Justin shares classes with him, but he is quieter and has a strong passion for philosophy and writing. Despite getting good grades, he feels he isn't living his youth to the fullest; he suffers from low self-esteem, which ultimately leads him—for various reasons—to form a sort of friendship with Richard.
Things get complicated when a middle-aged woman is murdered in town in a rather cruel manner, bearing visibly pronounced wounds. Cassie Mayweather (Sandra Bullock) is assigned to the case to investigate whether the killing was driven by jealousy from an ex-partner, the result of a robbery, or the work of a serial killer roaming the area. For Cassie, the murder clearly has many details that don't add up, such as the condition in which the woman was found, the injuries inflicted post-mortem, and the suspicion that another version of events might lead to the truth behind this crime.
The movie is a psychological thriller that grips you right from the start. While it may seem like just another police procedural trying to solve a murder, what elevates the story are the performances. Ryan Gosling plays a carefree youth driven by a constant desire for extreme experiences, while Michael Pitt portrays a deeply inhibited person with social difficulties and age-typical fears. No one would suspect either of them of having anything to do with the murder, but as Cassie uncovers more evidence, all suspicions point directly to these two young men.
It is quite an old movie and isn't based on a true story, but the cinematography is impressive, building a constant atmosphere of tension and mystery among the characters. Additionally, each character carries a personal backstory, most notably Cassie, who survived a traumatic event in her past—a trauma that fuels a fierce drive to bring justice to this woman who died in the worst possible way. The psychology displayed in the characters drops subtle hints showing that each one has something driving them to act in a specific way.
Although it doesn't have a very high rating on Letterboxd, I feel it is a complete early 2000s gem. It's a story that keeps you guessing about different culprits, ultimately showing that no one is quite who they appear to be. I really liked that: the characters present themselves one way, but in the end, the person you think is the true culprit turns out not to be entirely responsible. I enjoyed seeing a very young Ryan Gosling in this role, and without a doubt, the performances by both Sandra Bullock and Michael Pitt immerse you in a drama that seems baffling until the details begin to unfold. Hola amigos amantes del cine y la televisión, espero que estén empezando una buena semana. Hace poco mi hermana quién tiene una gran afinidad con Ryan Gosling se ha dedicado a ver diferentes películas donde el aparece. Y me recomendó ver una película del año 2002 que es muy poco conocida llamada Murder by Numbers. La película fue dirigida por Barbet Schroeder y habla sobre un asesinato a una mujer, al principio se piensa que pudo haber sido víctima de una pareja obsesiva o de un asesino en serie. Pero la película realmente va más allá contando con la actuación de la gran Sandra Bullock y me gustó bastante como se desarrolló la historia. Asi que los invito a leer 😶🌫️.
La trama de la película nos muestra a dos jóvenes: Richard Haywood (**Ryan Gosling) y Justin Pendleton (Michael Pitt). Richard es el típico estudiante de secundaria que no le va muy bien en las clases pero tiene un carisma y una supuesta seguridad cuando se trata de su forma de ser y de su personalidad. Justin comparte clases con él, pero es más callado y tiene una gran pasión por la filosofía y la escritura. A pesar de que tiene buenas calificaciones siente que no está viviendo su juventud a plenitud, tiene una baja autoestima y esto hace que al final por diferentes razones termine teniendo una especie de amistad con Richard.
Las cosas se complican cuando en el pueblo ocurre el asesinato de una mujer de mediana edad, de forma bastante cruel y con heridas visiblemente marcadas. Para este caso escogen a Cassie Mayweather (Sandra Bullock) quien se encarga de investigar si fue un asesinato producto de celos por una ex pareja, si fue producto de un asalto o si fue por algún asesino en serie que estuviera rondando por esa zona. Claramente para Cassie el asesinato tiene muchas cosas que no encajan, como la forma en que encontraron a la mujer, las heridas que le hicieron después de morir y la posible sospecha de que exista otra versión de los hechos que pueda dar con la verdad sobre este asesinato.
La película es un thriller psicológico que te envuelve desde el principio, parece una película más de policías tratando de resolver un asesinato pero lo que mejora la historia son las actuaciones. Ryan Gosling interpreta a un joven despreocupado pero con deseos siempre de hacer cosas extremas mientras que Michael Pitt se desenvuelve como una persona muy cohibida, con problemas para relacionarse y con miedos propios de la edad. Nadie pensaría que ambos tendrían algo que ver con este asesinato, pero por las cosas que Cassie va descubriendo todas las sospechas la llevan a estos dos jóvenes.
Es una película bastante vieja y no está basada en hechos reales, pero se aprecian muy bien las tomas de las escenas, creando un ambiente de tensión y de misterio entre los personajes. Además de que cada uno tiene una historia personal, pero la que más destaca es la de Cassie quién sufrió un evento traumático en el pasado, lo que hace que sienta una fuerte necesidad de hacer justicia por esta mujer que murió de la peor manera. La psicología que se muestra en los personajes te va dando pistas de que cada uno tiene ese algo que los lleva a actuar de determinada manera.
Aunque no tiene muy buena calificación en Letterboxd, siento que es una completa joya del principio de los 2000. Es una historia que te hace pensar en diferentes culpables, pero que al final muestra que no todos son lo que parecen. Eso me gusto, que los personajes puedan ser de una determinada manera, pero que al final el que piensas que es el verdadero culpable resulta que realmente no lo es del todo. Me gusto ver la actuación de Ryan Gosling bastante joven en esta película y sin duda tanto la de Sandra Bullock y Michael Pitt hacen que te adentres en un drama que parece no entenderse hasta que empiezan a dar más detalles. Les recomiendo verla puede que les guste tanto como a mí. 🫣👀
