Hello, movie and TV lovers! I hope you are all doing great. Yesterday, I had the chance to watch the movie The Line with my sister—a drama that leaves you reflecting on the power dynamics within college fraternities and the consequences of the rituals and acts performed inside these groups. Truth be told, I thought I wouldn't like the movie very much because I expected it to be mostly about young people partying or just a superficial story that wouldn't leave much to think about at the end. However, it turned out to be really interesting, and here is my take on it.

The story is set in 2014, where a young man named Tom Backster (Alex Wolff) is trying to achieve a higher social status, mingle with influential people, and secure a better future. To do so, he begs his mother to pay for his initiation into the university fraternity he will be attending, which is quite expensive. His mother isn't convinced it's a good idea, but Tom reminds her that many of society's most prominent figures belonged to a fraternity during their college years.

That is how Tom's story with the KNA fraternity begins, where he meets different young men. At first, he meets his roommate, a guy from a wealthy family with a rather detestable behavior. They become friends, but more than just friends, they turn into partners in partying and drugs, and brothers in the KNA fraternity. Tom manages to get in with a snobbish attitude and becomes a key player in choosing the next pledges who might join KNA; however, before joining, they must go through rather unpleasant tests to evaluate how "qualified" and "loyal" they are to the fraternity.

I had already seen the topic of fraternities in other movies, but this one highlights just how chaotic and bizarre everything happening inside these American groups can be—all just to reach a higher social level or power over others. I've read news reports about terrible things happening during these initiation rituals, sometimes even leading to the death of participants. In the movie, we can see actors like Lewis Pullman, Halle Bailey, and Austin Abrams, who bring the story to life in a realistic way that stays very true to the customs of those prestigious universities.

The rituals range from serving upperclassmen to performing all kinds of acts to convince senior members that the pledges truly want to be there. Something that caught my attention is that the movie feels so real it doesn't even look acted; some characters portray a personality that goes far beyond a script—their acting and way of expressing themselves feel completely authentic. And that's a bit terrifying, especially seeing how far many young people will go just to feel a sense of belonging, only to suffer severe consequences because of their own actions within the group.

Sure, the things they do might seem funny at times, but if you stop and analyze the situation, it fills you with dread to see how these groups hold so much control over the minds and actions of others, pushing them to the brink just to take pleasure in their suffering and lack of power. The ending was what I liked most, even though it left me uncomfortable and feeling bad for the character who ends up with a tragic outcome due to his own actions. It is also horrible to watch how someone with power and influence manages to get away with it, remaining completely unpunished for what they did.

What did you think of this movie? For me, it was quite interesting; I enjoyed the pacing of the story, which didn't feel heavy at all, as well as the cast selection and their performances, which were really solid. Not to mention the set design and the soundtrack, which also play an important role in depicting what fraternity life is like and what can happen when we desire to belong to something without weighing the consequences of our actions. It definitely gives you a lot to think about. I'd love to read your thoughts! 👀💭🎬

Spanish Version

Me gustaría leerlos. 👀💭🎬
