"The Weenie" | Lanterns - Episode Review [ES - EN]

El cuarto episodio de Lanterns, llamado "The Weenie", nos informa que se ha llegado a la mitad de la temporada y, por supuesto, nos acerca a lo que por los momentos es un inesperado final. El título para este episodio hace referencia a un término usado en arquitectura y explicado de buena y breve manera en el mismo episodio, lo cual nos da una perspectiva de cómo se pueden usar señuelos para (por supuesto) atraer la atención; este es un tema recurrente en el episodio que considero es el más dinámico y divertido que los dos primeros.

The fourth episode of Lanterns, titled "The Weenie," marks the halfway point of the season and, of course, brings us closer to what is, for now, an unexpected ending. The title of this episode refers to a term used in architecture and explained clearly and concisely within the episode itself, which gives us insight into how decoys can be used to (of course) attract attention; this is a recurring theme in the episode, which I consider to be more dynamic and entertaining than the first two.

En esta oportunidad, el relato de la historia es más que fundamental porque, al llegar a la encrucijada de la temporada, era necesario dar un salto importante en la historia y justamente temía que hubiera muchos atajos para poder responder a algún que otro misterio generado en los episodios anteriores, pero la realidad es que Vanessa Baden Kelly, guionista del episodio, hizo más que un buen trabajo, ya que pudo mantener la relevancia de ciertos aspectos, principalmente en los obstáculos que deben enfrentar ambos personajes cuando estaban trabajando en resolver el importante caso en el 2016.

This time around, the storytelling is absolutely crucial because, as we reach the season’s turning point, it was necessary to take a major leap forward in the plot—and I was actually worried there would be too many shortcuts taken to resolve some of the mysteries raised in previous episodes. But the reality is that ** Vanessa Baden Kelly**, the episode’s screenwriter, did more than a good job—she managed to maintain the relevance of certain aspects, particularly the obstacles both characters faced while working to solve that important case in 2016.

Sin restar relevancia a ninguno de los tres episodios anteriormente estrenados, este es el que más he disfrutado por el hecho de disfrutar aún más el tiempo que tienen juntos Hal y John, pero, como dije anteriormente, son los obstáculos que deben enfrentar para poder mantener su relación de tutor y aprendiz, lo que creo que se ha hecho de muy buena manera, ya que ofrece pistas para la resolución del caso del 2016 y también ofrece pistas para lo que es la investigación de un caso del cual seguramente nos adentraremos en los próximos episodios a estrenarse.

Without downplaying the importance of any of the three previously released episodes, this is the one I’ve enjoyed the most because I’ve really relished the time Hal and John spend together, but, as I said before, it’s the obstacles they must face to maintain their mentor-apprentice relationship that I think have been handled very well, since they offer clues to solving the 2016 case and also provide hints about an investigation we’ll surely delve into in upcoming episodes.

Así como ocurrió en el segundo episodio, el fanservice vuelve a hacer apariencia de muy buena manera; ver nuevamente a "Sinestro" y el nombramiento de un importante villano de Hal como Linterna Verde fue una grata decisión, aunque la escena compartida por el antiguo mentor de Jordan junto a este fue de gran importancia porque nos demuestra la mentalidad de un hombre que, cuando tuvo el poder del anillo, usó esa voluntad de imponer para poder surgir y mantener en lo más alto a los Green Lanterns. Como dice el mismo Sinestro, su ambición siempre estuvo presente y tanto Hal como los Guardianes nunca quisieron ver ese aspecto del personaje y todavía el poder que genera sobre Hal usando el miedo de Jordan para hacerlo doblegar fue de los momentos que más disfruté del episodio.

Just as in the second episode, the fanservice makes another great appearance; seeing “Sinestro” again and the appointment of one of Hal’s major villains as a Green Lantern was a welcome decision, though the scene shared by Jordan’s former mentor alongside him was particularly significant because it reveals the mindset of a man who, when he held the power of the ring, used that will to dominate in order to rise to the top and keep the Green Lanterns there. As Sinestro himself says, his ambition was always there, and neither Hal nor the Guardians ever wanted to see that side of his character; yet the power he wields over Hal—using Jordan’s fear to make him submit—was one of the moments I enjoyed most in the episode.

De las ya muchas veces que he visto este gran episodio, me sorprende que su ritmo sea tan bueno, pero también existen otros aspectos, como es la ligereza del relato, y eso que, junto al segundo episodio, posiblemente tenga buenas escenas de acción, pero repito, es la interacción entre sus dos protagonistas lo que también pude disfrutar, ya que la química entre los actores es más que evidente y sus diálogos son divertidos. Eso hace sumamente ameno el episodio porque el humor funciona y, justamente, este episodio tiene el más alto grado de humor en toda la temporada, lo cual considero perfecto porque creo que esa característica puede verse disminuida en los episodios finales. Como dije anteriormente, estamos en la mitad de temporada y mi expectativa es que en los cuatro episodios restantes cuenten con tan buena escritura como la tuvo este episodio; es muy necesario que eso ocurra porque estoy convencido de que desde el sexto hasta el octavo, episodio final de la serie, se enfoque en el verdadero elefante que se esconde en la habitación verde.

Of the many times I’ve watched this great episode, I’m surprised by how well-paced it is, but there are also other aspects, such as the lightheartedness of the story—and even though, along with the second episode, it possibly has some good action scenes, I’ll say it again: it’s the interaction between the two main characters that I also really enjoyed, since the chemistry between the actors is more than evident and their dialogue is funny. That makes the episode extremely entertaining because the humor works, and, in fact, this episode has the highest level of humor in the entire season—which I think is perfect, since I believe that aspect might be toned down in the final episodes. As I said earlier, we’re halfway through the season, and my hope is that the remaining four episodes will feature writing as strong as this one’s; it’s absolutely essential that this happens because I’m convinced that from the sixth through the eighth—the series finale—the show will focus on the real elephant hiding in the green room.
