Hello, horror fans. For this last weekend of October, I have some great recommendations for graphic, grotesque, and uncensored horror—not suitable for all audiences. Today I’m bringing you a personal pick that I was going to skip, until I remembered just how popular it is. A horror anime that stands out from most others because of its extremely gory content. Based on the video game of the same name created by Team GrisGris, titled Corpse Party, Tortured Souls is an animated adaptation produced by the Asread studio. Get ready for one of the most grotesque anime you’ll ever see (or not—it’s up to you) in your entire life.

Plot
The anime begins by showing us the interior of a school at night, where a group of seven students are sitting gathered around a candle in a darkened classroom, telling horror stories. Suddenly, the students are startled by the sudden arrival of their teacher, accompanied by the younger sister of one of the students present. We then see the group of students begin a sort of “friendship ritual” in which they must repeat a phrase nine times and then each pick a piece of paper with a human figure on it and pull it out on the count of three. Suddenly, a powerful earthquake causes the group of people in the classroom to sink into the ground.
Trama

Honestly, I thought long and hard about coming here to talk to you about this anime, especially after reading and hearing what everyone kept telling me when they recommended it to me. The one thing they always kept saying was how graphic and grotesque it can get—and boy, is it ever. Of course, personally, I don’t really mind this since—as I’ve mentioned before—I’ve been used to seeing a lot of gore since I was a kid. But when it comes to showing you this anime or talking about it in a review, I’m not sure if it’s the right thing to do, since it’s not something I’d personally recommend to just anyone. Only if you’re a true horror fan and aren’t squeamish about gore would I recommend it.
Otherwise, it’s up to each person reading this to decide for themselves whether they want to watch this anime or not. I’ll say it again: this isn’t your run-of-the-mill horror anime, and it’s certainly not for the faint of heart. If you’ve been scared or hesitant to watch the previous horror animes or movies I’ve featured over these weeks in October, then it’s best to skip this one for your own good and mental health. Otherwise, if you’re just looking for blood, violent deaths, gore, and plenty of graphic content, then this is the perfect anime for you. I don’t know if there’s anyone in this community or on Hive who shares this taste for gore, but here’s the review anyway.

Before continuing, I’d like to make it clear that this anime has a sort of “prequel,” which is really just an introduction to this grotesque and absurd horror story. But I’ll tell you right now that you don’t need to watch that 11-minute episode before watching this anime—it just serves to “introduce” us to the main characters of this story, but not much else, to be honest. Corpse Party: Tortured Souls is about a group of high school students who, one rainy night while at school, are suddenly transported to another old, abandoned elementary school.
We quickly learn that the place where they now find themselves is Heavenly Host Elementary School—a place that supposedly ceased to exist long ago. Both the students and the teacher who were sent to this place also discover that this very abandoned school is the site of a tragic series of child murders that went down in history as a sort of urban legend. Suddenly, the souls of the very children who were tortured and murdered here begin to attack the young people who were sent to this place—separately, at different points in time.

The premise might pique the interest of more than a few of you, but don’t be fooled by how seemingly cute, funny, or romantic it might seem at first—with the typical scene of a group of students playing games and telling horror stories one night at school. The story quickly turns into something far more terrifying and grotesque than many could have expected to see within just a couple of minutes. The most shocking aspect—and I think they really pull no punches in showing us exactly what it’s like to be in this cursed, abandoned school—is the deaths, starting with dismembered corpses riddled with worms and holes.
As I’ve already mentioned, the anime makes an impact solely through its graphic content, going beyond the usual jump scares or similar tropes. I’m not going to lie—it’s clear that this grotesque content might be exactly the kind of horror that some old-school fans expect to see in an anime of this style. But personally, and after several years of reviewing anime and movies, I’ve realized that there’s more than one type of “horror” in both the world of film and anime. The same goes for whether a story makes sense or not, or even whether the work itself has an ending that’s satisfying or not.

As for Corpse Party: Tortured Souls, I can only assure you that the only good thing about it is its graphic or grotesque content, along with its shocking deaths and out-of-control level of gore. Other than that, don’t expect anything else from its characters, let alone its story—honestly. I’m not going to say it’s all bad, since there are a few characters who stand out thanks to their well-developed backstories, and the plot itself does its job, at least for the most part. However, it’s the ending that ruins everything for me personally, on top of all those typical clichés it contains.
I’m not going to mention specific characters since there’s no point in doing so; I’ll just say that there are those who don’t know what to do in a complicated and traumatic situation like the one they’re going through at this cursed school. Then there are those who keep their cool and look for information or a way to escape, and there are also those who quickly lose control or their sanity and reveal their dark or lunatic side at every opportunity they see. Another thing I have to mention is that, no matter how well these young characters seem to be introduced or developed, don’t get attached to any of them.

The deaths in this anime make absolutely no sense and lack any respect, order, or reason whatsoever. One moment you think someone is going to be saved, only to find out that’s not the case; then we see a defenseless little girl suffer one of the most graphic and atrocious deaths imaginable, for absolutely no reason at all. At one point during the four episodes of this anime, I even began to think that it’s just an excuse to show us, in animated and audiovisual form, some of the most grotesque deaths currently found in the world of anime.
Well, even though this anime is quite a few years old, it’s understandable that it still enjoys a certain level of popularity and recognition in the industry today. I’ll just say that, in terms of visuals and graphic content, this anime is one of the most shocking in the horror genre. It’s a portrait of the most macabre, dark, and heart-wrenching aspects of human nature when influenced by thoughts and an environment as traumatic as the one we see in this miniseries. If there’s any lesson, message, or moral to be drawn from this anime, I can only tell you to cherish your friendships.

Despite the story’s heavy supernatural elements, this does not end up being an obstacle to what truly constitutes the horror at the heart of this story. As I’ve mentioned before, the true horror lies within humanity itself and what it is capable of doing for its own pleasure, benefit, pride, or sense of “justice.” And this is exactly what we see in the end of this anime: a truly tragic case of injustice and human cruelty taken to the extreme and reincarnated as a macabre curse that brought about dozens and dozens of deaths across generations.
While the anime’s ending largely succeeds in resolving certain mysteries and revealing secrets related to what happened at this school, that’s no excuse for leaving us with that final scene, which makes absolutely no sense. But hey, for an adaptation of a horror video game/graphic novel, it’s not that bad. Of course, it’s nowhere near one of my favorite horror anime due to the number of typical clichés and generic characters it has, but oh well. At least in terms of audiovisual quality, it’s clear that it’s of an extremely high standard for something made over a decade ago.

The traditional animation style, the understated character designs, the cool and dark color palette, and the excessive use of shadows and low lighting in most scenes are particularly noteworthy. Even so, the level of graphic detail, visual details, and completely grotesque environments and settings are also strikingly prominent. But none of this compares to the combination of visual details, fluidity, and high quality, paired with the anime’s exceptionally well-integrated and crafted sound effects—where you can practically feel every cut and dismemberment with complete clarity. The soundtrack is in a league of its own.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the supernatural horror and gore genres.
