Plot
The movie begins by showing us a school basketball game featuring only 12-year-olds. We see them win with the help of their coach, whom we then see addressing the families of all the team members that night at a gathering to celebrate their victory and graduation. The next thing we see is a 30-year jump forward, where we see the same team members from the beginning, but now as adults with families and everything—or at least, most of them. They all receive an unexpected call informing them that their former coach has passed away.

Los vemos ganar con la ayuda de su entrenador, quien acto seguido lo vemos dirigir algunas palabras esa noche en una reunión que tiene con la familia de todos los miembros del equipo para así celebrar su victoria y graduación. Lo siguiente que vemos es un salto de 30 años, donde podemos ver a los mismos miembros del equipo del principio, pero ya de grandes con familia y todo, o bueno, al menos la mayoría. Todos reciben una llamada inesperada donde se les notifica que su antiguo entrenador ha fallecido.

This movie is also known as the most iconic of Adam Sandler’s entire filmography. An interesting fact is that the film features the entire cast of Happy Madison Productions, Sandler’s independent production company. I can’t even remember the absurd number of times I’ve watched this movie in my life. Seriously, I’m not exaggerating when I say that Grown Ups is one of the Adam Sandler movies I’ve watched the most times for as long as I can remember. Despite being from the last decade, its style of humor and plot retain that appeal that Sandler has cultivated since the ’90s.
Another thing I find interesting is the enormous number of jokes, funny moments, and scenes in this movie that have remained in many people’s memories ever since—and even more so now. Grown Ups has become more than just a cult comedy film; it has become part of an entire generation because of what it conveys—clearly, beyond just its humor. It’s not that it has a story that will captivate anyone—far from it—but it does manage to entertain you from start to finish. It’s one of my favorite Adam Sandler movies, without a doubt.

Algo curioso es que dicha película tiene de elenco a todo el equipo de actores de Happy Madison Productions, productora independiente de Sandler. No recuerdo la cantidad absurda de veces que he visto esta película en mi vida. De verdad, no exagero cuando digo que Grown Ups es de las películas de Adam Sandler que más veces he visto desde que tengo uso de razón. A pesar de ser de la década pasada, su estilo de humor y trama mantienen ese atractivo que Sandler ha desarrollado desde los años 90.
Otra cosa que también me parece interesante es la enorme cantidad de chistes, momentos y escenas graciosas que tiene esta película y que se han mantenido en el recuerdo de muchos desde entonces e incluso más ahora. Grown Ups se ha vuelto más que una película de comedia de culto, se ha vuelto parte de toda una generación debido a lo que transmite, más allá de su humor, claramente. No es que tenga una historia que llegue a fascinar a alguno ni muchísimo menos, pero sí logra entretenerte de principio a fin. Es una de mis películas favoritas de Adam Sandler, eso sin dudarlo.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any flaws or details that I’d like to point out below. To start, I’ll tell you what the movie is actually about, since it’s nothing more than a simple reunion of the group of children or preteens I mentioned who appear at the beginning. Except now they’re older, with families of their own, and many decades behind them. You’d think that, now that they’re older, they’d be more responsible, serious, and different from how they were as kids. But the reality is the exact opposite, and that’s precisely the point of this movie.
During their coach’s farewell ceremony—and even throughout the entire weekend at a cabin by the lake—we’ll see this very unusual group having fun and playing pranks on each other as if they were kids. In fact, there’s a reason why, where I live, this movie is known as “As if they were children”—because the film is simply about a group of adults over 40 acting like kids while having fun with their families at a lake cabin during a typical summer.
Pero esto no significa que no tenga ningún error o detalle que me llame la atención mencionar a continuación. Para esto primero les mencionaré de qué trata la película como tal, ya que no es más que una simple reunión del grupo de niños o preadolescentes que les mencioné que aparecen al principio. Solamente que ahora son mayores, con familia y muchas décadas encima. Se supone que, al ser mayores ya, deben de ser más responsables, serios y diferentes a como eran de niños. Pero la realidad es todo lo contrario a esto y es exactamente eso el chiste de esta película.
Durante la ceremonia de despedida de su entrenador e incluso durante todo el fin de semana en una cabaña en el lago veremos a este grupo tan inusual divertirse y hacer las bromas entre sí como si fueran niños. Es más, por algo es que aquí en donde vivo está película se conoce por el nombre de “Como si fueran niños”, ya que la película simplemente trata de un grupo de adultos de más de 40 años actuando como niños mientras se divierten con la familia en una cabaña en el lago en un verano cualquiera.

Of course, the movie itself evokes moments of nostalgia when this group of adults reminisces about what they used to do as teenagers. But it’s only natural to see and hear this when we consider what each and every one of them has become. Unlike our protagonist, Lenny Feder—who has married a beautiful woman and has three children whom he provides for with a very well-paying job as a Hollywood talent agent—the rest of the group doesn’t have a luxurious, wonderful life like Lenny’s.
For example, his first and best friend, Eric Lamonsoff, claims to have a great job. Eric also has a wife and two children, as does Kurt McKenzie, who admits he doesn’t have a job but spends his time taking care of his children and doing household chores while his wife works. Then there’s Marcus Higgins, who has changed the least (in terms of personality) and remains the group’s typical womanizer even in his forties. Finally, there’s Rob Hilliard, a very peculiar guy who has a thing for older women and is now married to an elderly woman.
Claro, la misma película nos trae momentos de nostalgia cuando este grupo de adultos recuerdan lo que hacían cuando eran adolescentes. Pero es normal ver y escuchar esto cuando notamos en lo que terminaron convirtiéndose todos y cada uno de ellos. A diferencia de nuestro protagonista, Lenny Feder quien se ha casado con una hermosa mujer y tiene tres hijos que cuida con un trabajo muy bien pagado como agente de talentos de Hollywood; el resto de integrantes no tienen una lujosa y excelente vida como Lenny.
Por ejemplo, su primer y mejor amigo Eric Lamonsoff quien afirma tener un excelente trabajo. Eric también tiene esposa y dos hijos, al igual que Kurt McKenzie quien admite que no tiene trabajo, sino que se la pasa cuidando de sus hijos y hacer los quehaceres del hogar mientras su esposa sí trabaja. Luego tenemos a Marcus Higgins quien es el que menos ha cambiado (en personalidad) y que sigue siendo el típico mujeriego del grupo a sus cuarenta y tantos años. They all demonstrate unparalleled chemistry, cracking jokes, teasing each other, and pulling pranks. Each character stands out in one way or another—some with physical comedy, like Eric (played by Kevin James), or the racist and sexist jokes from Kurt (played by Chris Rock). There’s also Marcus (played by David Spade), who, after Lenny (Adam Sandler), is the character who makes me laugh the most, both for his jokes and his acting.
But beyond the crass, varied, and adult-oriented humor of this group of adults with the minds of teenagers, what really catches my attention is seeing how this summer camp they’re having with their families gradually brings them closer together. Not just because of the fun moments they share, but also as they confess the secrets and lies they’ve been keeping from one another so as not to let the others down. For example, Lenny tries to make them think he isn’t as important or wealthy as he really is by claiming they don’t have a housekeeper and by disciplining his spoiled children.
Cada personaje que acabamos de mencionar lo interpreta uno de los diferentes actores que, como les dije, forman parte de la Productora de Adam Sandler. Todos estos demuestran tener una química sin igual, echando chistes, burlándose entre ellos y haciendo bromas pesadas. Cada personaje llama la atención de una u otra forma, algunos con chistes físicos como lo es Eric (interpretado por Kevin James) o los chistes racistas y sexistas de Kurt (interpretado por Chris Rock). También tenemos a Marcus (interpretado por David Spade) quien, después de Lenny (Adam Sandler), es el personaje que más risa me da tanto por sus chistes como también por sus actuaciones.
Pero más allá del humor rancio, variado y para adultos que tiene este grupo de adultos con pensamientos de niños adolescentes; lo que me llama mucho la atención es ver cómo este campamento de verano que tienen con su familia los une poco a poco. No solo por los momentos divertidos que tienen, sino al confesar sus secretos y mentiras que se tienen entre sí para no defraudar a los demás. Por ejemplo, Lenny intenta mostrarles que no es tan importante y millonario como realmente es afirmando que no tienen sirvienta y reeducando a sus malcriados hijos.

Then there’s Eric, who claims to have money and a settled life with his family, although the truth is they’re just pretending to live a dream life—the kind his wife is always bragging about to his friends’ wives. Kurt is simply worried about not having an emotional or intimate relationship with his wife, who spends all her time working while he stays home taking care of their kids. And let’s not forget Marcus, who constantly brags about being happy as a womanizer who’s always out with girls, when in the end he’s completely alone.
But the one everyone makes fun of the most because of his relationship and personality is dear Rob (played by Rob Schneider), who shows us he has a happy relationship with an elderly woman who could easily be all of their mothers. By the way, while this made me laugh a lot back when I was a teenager and watched this movie countless times on cable TV at home, now that I’m watching it again with a more mature mindset and a fresh perspective, I notice how everyone was constantly making fun of Rob and his elderly partner.
También tenemos a Eric quien dice tener dinero y una vida hecha con su familia, aunque la verdad solo simulan vivir una vía de ensueño, como de esas que siempre cuentan su esposa a las demás mujeres de sus amigos. Kurt simplemente se preocupa por no tener una relación emocional ni íntima con su esposa que se la pasa trabajando mientras él está en casa cuidando de sus hijos. Y no nos olvidemos de Marcus quien constantemente alardea de ser feliz siendo un mujeriego saliendo con chicas todo el tiempo cuando al final está completamente solo.
Pero de quien más se burlan todos debido a su relación y personalidad es el querido Rob (interpretado por Rob Schneider) quien nos demuestra tener una relación feliz con una señora de tercera edad que muy fácilmente podría ser la madre de todos. Por cierto, si bien esto me dió mucha risa desde que era adolescente y veía esta película incontables veces en la televisión por cable de mi casa, ahora que la vuelvo a ver con una mente más madura y otros ojos noto cómo todos se enfrascaron en burlarse en todo momento con Rob y su pareja de tercera edad.

In this case, Rob is one of those characters in the movie who’s there solely to provoke mockery, jokes, and awkward or absurd moments. However, they pull this off by portraying the different types of people who could easily be your friends from childhood or adolescence. I mean, we all have a friend who had a thing for older women, another who’s always hitting on any woman he meets, the typical black friend who tells black jokes, and the overweight friend with his physical jokes and huge personality. I guess, in one way or another, we can all relate to this quintet.
And that’s the appeal of this movie: watching a group of old friends relive the good old days with their families at a lake house in their hometown. It’s not the best movie in Adam Sandler’s entire filmography in terms of narrative, production, and direction; but it is the funniest of them all, that’s for sure. Maybe it’s because of the variety of jokes and funny moments, the range of characters and performances, or the chemistry they have with each other. If there’s one good thing about this movie, it’s that every scene, every minute, is one joke after another, nonstop.
En este caso, Rob es uno de esos personajes que tiene esta película que solo sirven para generar burlas, chistes y momentos incómodos o absurdos. Sin embargo, esto lo logran representando a los distintos tipos de personas que fácilmente pueden ser tus amigos de la infancia o adolescencia. O sea, todos tenemos un amigo que le gustaban las mayores, otro que suele tirarle piropos a cualquier mujer que conozca, el típico amigo de color que hace chistes de negros y el amigo de sobrepeso con su chistes físicos y su enorme personalidad. Supongo que, de alguna u otra forma, todos nos podemos identificar con este quinteto.
Y ese es el chiste que tiene esta película como tal: ver a un grupo de chico viejos amigos revivir viejos tiempos con su familia en una casa en el lago en su ciudad natal. No es la mejor película de toda la filmografía de Adam Sandler en cuanto a nivel narrativo, producción y dirección se trata; pero es la más graciosa de todas, eso sí. Tal vez y sea por la variedad de chistes y momentos graciosos que tiene, la variedad de personajes e interpretaciones o la propia química que tienen entre ellos. Si de algo bueno que tiene esta película es que cada escena, cada minuto es chiste tras chiste sin parar.

To find something good in this movie—aside from the jokes—is how the plot itself tries to convey a certain message of camaraderie and how, in life, we sometimes have to accept the decisions we’ve made in the past and not regret anything. Especially given the movie’s ending, which, obviously, is meant to provide closure and a barely acceptable lesson. But it’s nothing to write home about, to be honest, since the movie itself ends up mocking everything mentioned above with a rather absurd conclusion that shows how nobody changes. But hey, the important thing is to have a good time, I guess.
Last but not least, let’s talk about the film’s audiovisual aspects, which aren’t particularly noteworthy, to be honest. Since it’s also directed by the same person who brought us other great Adam Sandler comedy classics, we can see that it has that humorous touch from start to finish. The cinematography, color palette, use of light and shadow, and the shots the film offers are decent. The visual and sound effects aren’t too bad either, but the soundtrack is one of the best parts thanks to its nostalgic appeal. All in all, it’s a comedy movie you might enjoy.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 as far as the comedy genre is concerned.
Para poder extraer algo bueno de esta película, aparte de los chistes que tiene, es cómo la propia trama trata de transmitir cierto mensaje de compañerismo y de cómo en la vida a veces hay que aceptar las decisiones del pasado y no arrepentirse de nada. Sobre todo por el final que tiene la película que, evidentemente, tiene que darnos un cierre y una lección apenas aceptable. Pero nada del otro mundo, la verdad, ya que la propia película termina burlándose de todo lo anteriormente dicho con una conclusión bastante absurda de cómo ninguno cambia. Pero bueno, lo importante es pasarla bien, creo.
Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual que tiene esta película, la cual no es de lo más destacable, la verdad. Como también está dirigida por la misma persona que nos ha traído otros grandes clásicos de la comedia de Adam Sandler, notamos que tiene ese toque humorístico de principio a fin. La fotografía, la paleta de colores, el uso de luces y sombras y los planos que nos da la película son decentemente aceptables. Los efectos visuales y de sonido tampoco están tan mal, pero la banda sonora es de lo mejor por la nostalgia. En fin, una película de comedia que les puede gustar.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia.
