The video game Cyberpunk 2077 was released in late 2020, and despite having a fictional world filled with meticulous details and an interesting story, it was harshly criticized for containing “Bugs” that ruined the experience. However, Cyberpunk gave people plenty to talk about in 2022 thanks to the Netflix series that took advantage of its magnificent world.
“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” was not only an excellent adaptation of the universe created by Mike Pondsmith and CD Projekt Red; it also became a phenomenon that continues to be admired and appreciated as a Netflix masterpiece. In just ten 22-minute episodes, it tells a story that begins extraordinarily and ends as a memorable work of art.
Director Hiroyuki Imaishi and Studio Trigger created a work that stands out mainly because of its animation in sequences filled with violence and emotion—in other words, what is colloquially described as epicness. Something incredible to watch is even better when presented with neon colors and an energy that contrasts with the despair. Unlike other anime that explore similar themes, this series has a protagonist who stands out because he possesses his own personality rather than simply being a passive observer of events.
I believe that is why, to this day, it remains one of the best anime of the last decade and one of the finest examples of modern science fiction, or what is now known as the cyberpunk genre.
The story takes place in Night City, a neo-futuristic metropolis where it is rare to see people made entirely of flesh and blood, since technological enhancements are everything. Hypercapitalism dictates the rules, and chrome on the market has turned the population into cyborgs.
We follow David Martinez, a marginalized young punk who is left orphaned after a family tragedy caused by society’s corporate indifference. He decides to implant an illegally obtained military-grade device: the “Sandevistan.” This act pushes him into the underworld of edgerunners—mercenaries—where he quickly discovers that power comes at an extremely high price. Whether it is advanced military technology, a corporation corrupt to the core, or the power of a criminal gang, brutality is inevitable on the descent into cyberpsychosis, a mental illness caused by excessive cybernetic modification that strips individuals of their humanity until they become monsters.
I know what you may be thinking upon learning firsthand that this series is an adaptation of a video game. It is a question I asked myself at the time: “Do you need to have played the game to understand the anime?” The short answer is no, and I say that from experience. I did not know the story of “Cyberpunk 2077,” but this series was what sparked my interest in the history of its world.
Night City is divided into different social classes, such as the “Corpos,” who are middle-class people aspiring to climb the corporate ladder within a particular company—of which there are many companies, institutions, and agencies. Corporate employees enjoy privileges because of their high status, so almost everyone desires that social position. However… some people take other paths, such as the “Edgerunners,” cybercriminals—technically hackers—who use their knowledge to steal information or control pieces of technology for their own benefit. That’s right: there is an underworld in the city that generates countless conflicts.
It is like watching an even more futuristic version of “Blade Runner” combined with elements of “Ghost in the Shell.” In other words, in this fictional future, people make high-tech modifications to their entire bodies, to the point of becoming more machine than living organism. Cybernetic technology therefore dominates everything. Absolutely everything.
When discussing this series, no one can deny that the relationship between David and Lucy is beautifully constructed. The co-protagonist is a somewhat enigmatic “netrunner”—a hacker—with a dream of escaping to the moon. She becomes David’s emotional anchor and his purpose in life. Unlike traditional hero stories, their romance is strongly marked by the inherent tragedy of a toxic environment.
Night City does not allow happy endings, and the script emphasizes this repeatedly. Supporting characters such as Maine and Rebecca are endearing and memorable precisely because they are the protagonist’s friends, but their personalities make them so likable that, in a way, they become friends of the audience as well. Unfortunately, that makes the inevitable losses along the way hurt the viewer even more. Achieving that is no easy feat in a television series.
Technically speaking, Studio Trigger has had a very distinctive animation style since its greatest work, "Tengen Toppa Gurren lagann" (2007): saturated colors in constant motion, flowing gracefully. Here, the action is explicit, bloody, and visceral, which makes sense as the essence of cyberpunk aesthetics: viewing technology as if it were rock and roll. The audiovisual editing uses rapid cuts to convey the adrenaline of combat. For example, the use of the “Sandevistan” is portrayed as hyperspeed in slow motion.
“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” is a very cruel fictional world where mercy and morality do not apply. It is like a jungle in which violence erupts as a matter of survival.
Akira Yamaoka’s soundtrack is worthy of praise for combining aggressive electronic rhythms with moments of melancholy. The use of Rosa Walton’s song “I Really Want to Stay at Your House,” which plays throughout the season, serves as a requiem that encapsulates all the pain, hope, and beauty of David and Lucy’s story.
It is not exactly a love story; it is an emotional journey that breaks your heart in style. The loss of identity and the sacrifices we make for the people we love form a cycle that constantly destroys and rebuilds us. In Night City, you do not become a legend because of how you live, but because of how you die. To understand what it takes to become a legend, I recommend watching “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.”

Sin embargo, cyberpunk dio mucho de qué hablar en el 2022 gracias a la serie de Netflix que le sacó provecho a su magnífico mundo.
"Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" no solo ser una magnífica adaptación del universo creado por Mike Pondsmith y el estudio CD Projekt Red, sino que logró convertirse en un fenómeno que sigue siendo admirado y apreciado por ser una joya de Netflix, con solo apenas diez episodios de 22 minutos, se nos cuenta una historia que inicia siendo extraordinaria y termina siendo una memorable obra de arte.
El director Hiroyuki Imaishi y el Studio Trigger hicieron una obra que destaca mayormente por su animación en las secuencias llenas de violencia y emotividad: lo que coloquialmente se define como epiquismo. Ya que algo increíble de ver se aprecia mejor con colores neón y una energía que contraste con la desesperanza. Esta serie en particular a diferencia de otros animes que tocan temas similares tiene un protagonista que destaca por tener su propia personalidad y no ser simplemente un plano espectador de los acontecimientos.

La historia se sitúa en Night City, una metrópolis neofuturista en donde es raro ver personas completamente hechas de carne y hueso, ya que las mejoras tecnológicas lo es todo. El hipercapitalismo dicta las reglas y el cromo en el mercado convirtió a la población en cyborts.
Seguimos a David Martínez, un joven punk marginado que quedó huérfano tras una tragedia familiar provocada por la indiferencia corporativa de la sociedad, él decide implantarse un dispositivo militar de grado ilegal: el "Sandevistan". Este acto lo empuja al submundo de los edgerunners (mercenarios), en donde descubre rápidamente que el poder tiene un precio altísimo. Ya sea el alto poder militar tecnológico, el de una corporación corrupta hasta la médula o el poder de una banda criminal, la brutalidad es inevitable en la caída hacia la ciberpsicosis, una enfermedad mental inducida por la excesiva modificación cibernética que despoja a los individuos de su humanidad hasta convertirlos en monstruos.
Se lo que puedes pensar al saber de primera mano que está serie es la adaptación de un videojuego, es una pregunta que me hice en su tiempo: "¿Es necesario haberse jugado el juego para entender el anime?" Respuesta corta: No, y lo digo por experiencia. No conocía la historia de "Cyberpunk 2077", pero fue gracias a esta serie que me interese en la historia de su mundo.
Night City esta dividido en distintas clases sociales, como los "Corpo" que son personas de clase media que aspiran a ascender en la escalera corporativa de una empresa en cuestión, (Hay muchas empresas, instituciones y agencias) los corporativos tienen privilegios por tener alto estatus, por lo que casi todos desean esa posición social, sin embargo... Hay quienes toman otros caminos, como los "Edgerunners", criminales informáticos, técnicamente Hackers que aprovechan sus conocimientos para robar información o controlar piezas de tecnologías a su conveniencia. Así es, hay un bajo mundo en la ciudad que genera muchos conflictos.
Es como ver una versión aun más futurista de "Blade Runner" con elementos de "Ghost in the Shell"; es decir que en este futuro ficticio, las personas se hacen modificaciones de alta tecnología en todo el cuerpo, al punto de ser más maquina que un organismo viviente. Por lo que la tecnología cibernetica lo domina todo. (Absolutamente todo)
Al hablar de esta serie, nadie puede negar que la relación entre David y Lucy esta hermosamente construido: La coprotagonista es una "netrunner" (una hacker) algo enigmática con el sueño de escapar a la luna, ell se convierte en el ancla emocional de David y en propósito vital de esté. A diferencia de las historias tradicionales de héroes, su romance está fuertemente marcado por la tragedia inherente de un entorno tóxico.
Night City no permite finales felices, y el guion lo recalca repetidas veces: Personajes secundarios como Maine o Rebecca son entrañables y memorables por ser precisamente amigos del protagonista, pero sus personalidades los vuelven tan simpáticos que de alguna forma se vuelven amigos del espectador. Lamentablemente, eso hace que la inevitables pérdidas en el camino duelan aún más al espectador. Y eso no es fácil de lograr en una serie de TV.
A nivel técnico, Studio Trigger tiene un estilo de animación muy característico desde su más grande obra "Tengen Toppa Gurren lagann" (2007), es decir: colores saturados en constante movimiento que fluyen con gracia. Aquí la acción es explícita, sangrienta y visceral, por lo que entiendo que esa es la escencia de la estética cyberpunk. El arte de ver la tecnología como si fuera Rock and Roll. El montaje audiovivisual tiene cortes rápidos para transmitir la adrenalina de los combates, por ejemplo: el Uso del "Sandevistan" se muestra como hipervelocidad a camara lenta.
"Cyberpunk Edgerunners" es un mundo ficticio muy cruel en el que la piedad o la moral no se aplica, es como una selva en la que se desata la violencia por cuestiones de supervivencia.
La banda sonora de Akira Yamaoka es elogiable por combinar ritmos electrónicos agresivos con momentos de melancolía. El uso de la canción "I Really Want to Stay at Your House" de Rosa Walton que suena a lo largo de la temporada: es un réquiem que condensa todo el dolor, la esperanza y la belleza de la historia de David y Lucy.
No es una historia de amor tal cual, es un viaje emocional que te destroza el corazón con estiló. La pérdida de la identidad y el sacrificio por las personas que amamos es un ciclo que nos destruye y nos construye constantemente: En Night City, no te conviertes en leyenda por cómo vives, sino por cómo mueres. Para entender que es lo que se necesita para ser una leyenda, te recomiendo ver "Cyberpunk Edgerunners"
