I’m sorry for the delay. These past few weeks, I’ve been overloaded with university work, and because of that, I ran out of time to write the proper review of episode 4. Now that episodes 5 and 6 have been released, I feel obligated to share my thoughts on how the series VisionQuest is developing.
I’ll be very specific about certain topics, since a lot has happened across these three episodes that needs to be discussed before the series ends. There have been unexpected surprises that have changed the narrative in a very natural way. The things I thought were predictable never happened, and that makes me happy, since we don’t often get to see a series of this caliber.
Review
Let’s begin where we left off last time: thanks to Thomas Shepherd (Tommy) help, Vision managed to recover from his mortal wound. That same night, he had a cybernetic encounter with the new villain—more accurately, villainess, whom I’ll discuss later. What surprises me is how quickly Vision and Tommy develop a good relationship.
After opening up to each other in the previous episode, they begin acting with much more closeness and sympathy. They aren’t quite at the level of having a good father-son relationship, but they are certainly better off than before. It’s as if the series doesn’t want to waste time on paternal drama, because once Vision is completely repaired—or more or less—he and Tommy team up to stop the serial killer known as the Grim Reaper, who will pose a challenge for the new Vision.
Finally, speaking of this villainess, episode 4 introduces her as an android very similar to Ultron because of her radical ideas. She is Jocasta, an advanced AI created from the mind of Dr. Josephine Carrington. After becoming aware of what she is, she planned a ruthless revenge against her creators.
But her evil plan doesn’t end there. She has a purpose: to keep humanity under her absolute control using nanomachines capable of altering the human genome and turning people into a perfect hybrid of the organic and the mechanical. However, to achieve her goal, she will have to earn the trust of the MCU’s most vile machine. I’m referring, of course, to the infamous Ultron. (Because yes, apparently these androids are going to have a romance.)
Ultron completely stole the show. Like Loki, this former villain has proven to be more than just a one-note antagonist. After his defeat in Sokovia at the hands of the planet’s mightiest heroes, he had faded into obscurity in the modern world. But now that he’s back, he has plenty of potential to play an important role in the future of the new MCU.
Ever since he became trapped inside Vision’s mind, the only thing he had wanted for years was freedom. In a way, he had been serving a sentence in the hope of being reformed. (Only time will tell whether he becomes one of the good guys or remains evil.) Even Vision’s death didn’t free him from his chains, so he used his ingenuity to create the perfect opportunity to escape.
He put Vision in mortal danger so he could take control of his body and have him at his mercy. But his purpose was never to seize Vision’s body. Instead, he intended to escape through the network once Vision himself deactivated the firewall that had kept him imprisoned. (This plan was brilliantly written. Emotionally manipulating Vision to undermine his logical thinking was brilliant and completely typical of Ultron.) I hope and wish that he doesn’t die or suffer a definitive defeat by the end of the series, because he has tremendous potential to become a threat to the future Avengers.
After escaping into the network, Ultron went straight to his new subject of interest: Jocasta. However, she didn’t exactly welcome him with open arms, since Ultron literally holds the key to setting her plan for world domination in motion. Episode 6 features a deep discussion aimed at convincing the machine that once tried to wipe out every living being on the planet to follow a new, more merciful evil plan. And apparently, she succeeded in touching the supervillain’s feelings.
Vision’s current situation isn’t very favorable. After Ultron’s escape, F.R.I.D.A.Y. pursued him into the network, leaving Vision with only E.D.I.T.H.’s support to manage his operating system. (She will very likely sacrifice herself, just like J.A.R.V.I.S.)
Only two episodes remain before the conclusion of this excellent series, and I’d dare to make a prediction about how things will unfold: Vision will face Ultron, while the Paladin will be responsible for taking on Jocasta. In the latest episode, the Paladin proved to be a very noble ally, despite having kidnapped Thomas Shepherd for a second time. He has unfinished business with the android, so a double or simultaneous battle to close out the season would fit perfectly.
But Ultron and Jocasta aren’t the only villains in this series. There is also someone hiding in the shadows who has a peculiar interest in Vision for some mysterious reason. His identity is unknown for now, but many theories have already emerged about who he might be.
The first candidate is Jim Hammond, the first sentient android, who self-destructed because he was unable to process his own emotions. This character was mentioned in episode 4, so he is probably the one. But many people forget that another advanced artificial intelligence created from a human mind exists in the MCU: Arnim Zola, one of Hydra’s masterminds.
The last time he appeared in the main storyline was in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Although he appeared in episode 9 of What If...?, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think that he somehow gained access to the network and wants to take over Vision’s body. But that’s only my theory. I just hope that whoever this mysterious person is, he comes out of the shadows and shows his face.
