Extraterrestrial (2014): Mind-Blowing and Cosmic. The seventh art is so diverse and complex that through it we can enjoy every possible genre. However, many people—myself included—believe that for a movie to be considered good, it must feature big-name actors and high-caliber directors; naturally, these elements make it more appealing to audiences. But from my point of view—and this is my personal opinion—a good movie must have an engaging and fantastic plot to achieve that goal; it doesn’t matter if it’s low-budget or directed by an average filmmaker—what matters is that it provides great entertainment. That’s exactly what happened to me with the 2014 film Extraterrestrial, directed by Colin Minihan.
Now, in my search for movies to enjoy, this one had popped up several times, and I hadn’t given it a chance—until I finally decided to. I had my doubts, and honestly, I was wrong, because it turned out to be very interesting. The plot combines science fiction, action, drama, and suspense, and is packed with well-developed scenes. It’s true—it’s a low-budget film and might go unnoticed, but these are the hidden gems that are truly entertaining. The truth is, it’s a psychological experience that creates an inexplicable labyrinth in our minds; it takes us into the unknown, and because it’s something we don’t understand, it instills in us that fear and dread as we search for explanations. On top of that, it also shows us everything human beings are capable of doing to prevent what happened from becoming public knowledge.
Without a doubt, it’s a film that unfolds gradually and seeps into our minds, inviting us to consider that we aren’t far from a possible reality. It invites us to think that, after all, we aren’t alone and that the worst could happen just a stone’s throw from our home. Colin Minihan achieves all of this by developing a story set in total isolation—something he’s accustomed to doing—and, as a result, he ultimately draws the viewer fully into the story. His specialty is creating atmospheres that plunge his actors into a total existential nightmare; he truly is a genius, and he’s proven it here. Remember, all of this is just my personal opinion—to each their own—and Extraterrestrial has been my favorite.

The plot features characters who have appeared in fairly well-known movies and TV series; among them is the famous and seasoned Michael Ironside in the role of Travis. There are other characters; however, for me—and you can decide for yourselves—the weight of the story rests on Brittany Allen, who plays the strong-willed April, and Freddie Stroma as Kyle. The two make a great duo; there’s chemistry between them, and their actions feel very believable. You can sense their joy and love when the moment calls for it, but at the same time, those feelings shift dramatically in moments of crisis. They handle that transition very well and truly bring their characters to life; lies, secrets, tensions, fears, and strength—it all unfolds organically.
It all begins with a desperate woman running in the middle of the night in the rain. She arrives at a store, and the manager—even though he can see how distraught she is—shockingly closes the store and refuses to let her in. As best she can, the woman runs to a phone booth to keep calling for help, when suddenly a very bright white light strikes the booth, and it vanishes. The store manager comes out of the store, surprised and distressed; the phone booth crashes violently from the sky, but there’s no sign of the woman. What happened? We don’t know. The plot continues with April and Kyle, who decide to spend a weekend away from everyone, including April’s family. Kyle’s intentions are romantic, but April has something to say, and this seems like the right moment.
But since Kyle has other plans, he invites some friends over—a situation that doesn’t sit well with April, and she gets a little upset. Now, what could have been a weekend of confessions and some heartache over a secret that was bound to come to light turns into what they—and we—believe will be a relaxing vacation. Because in the town they’re heading to, some very strange things are happening: animals are dying for no apparent reason, people are disappearing without a trace, and from that moment on, the plot becomes increasingly tense and mysterious as they arrive at a cabin that’s completely isolated from everything and everyone.
Back at the cabin late at night, the kids are partying; suddenly, they spot what looks like a kite or something similar in the sky, which approaches and suddenly crashes near their cabin. As always, the human mind is so curious that everyone goes to check it out, and what they see there is completely baffling—they’re shocked, dazed, and start coming up with wild theories. The truth is that it seems to have been confirmed that we are not alone, and what follows will be utter terror that grips the characters; they are being pursued and hunted by something cosmic and supernatural. Will the characters be able to get out of this? Is what their eyes see real? Will they have the strength to face these creatures and survive? The truth is that tension, anguish, and despair will be ever-present; no one will be able to hide, no one will be able to escape—not even we are safe.
The way the story unfolds—in my view—is fantastic, because events don’t happen all at once; nothing is explicitly stated, which lends itself to a mental game between us. I say this because the actions gradually create a sort of web that takes shape in an organized way and drives the characters completely mad. Every space they visit is a trap, creating a psychological atmosphere that many won’t be able to comprehend; definitely, everything that happens keeps us on edge from start to finish, without the need to reveal the details. Lighting plays an important role during the action; we can go from a well-lit setting to one with dim, eerie lighting, right up to the sudden, distressing appearance of an intense red light signaling imminent danger. The same is true of the atmosphere and sound, which create that sense of total dread that seeps into every fiber of our being; there’s no escape in such a vast space, and that feeling intensifies with the sonic impact of the moment.
The film shows us that what’s happening in a small town could be a kind of experiment—just a small one—amidst larger events that might be brewing on an international scale. It’s a mind game that shatters what we thought we knew, and from my perspective, the film could easily have served as the basis for subsequent works. These are theories that will always be on the table, and they invite us to reflect on just how arrogant humanity can be in its quest to discover whether, besides us, there is something else in space that prevents us from continuing to believe we are the most powerful. It is definitely a message aimed at raising collective awareness.
As I said before, it’s a movie that doesn’t need a big budget to deliver great entertainment. For me, it’s a movie that appeals to a wide range of tastes, especially for those who like to think, connect the dots, put the pieces together, and whose minds are always restless in search of a film that will blow their minds. Just like I did, you should give Extraterrestrial a chance, because rest assured that after watching it, looking up at the sky won’t be as pleasant as it usually is. This movie is as good as any other in the genre; I’d even go so far as to say that, within this genre, it’s better than some of them. Don’t let others spoil it for you—be a witness to something that could change the way you see things; don’t let them analyze you. Best regards, and see you soon.

Extraterrestrial (2014): Alucinante y Cósmica. El séptimo arte es tan variado y tan complejo, que a través de él podemos disfrutar de todos los géneros posibles. Sin embargo, muchos piensan y me incluyo; que para tener en frente una buena película, ésta debe integrar grandes y conocidos actores, así como directores de alto calibre; lógicamente que esos elementos le imprimen mayor interés al gusto de los espectadores. Pero desde mi punto de vista y esta es mi opinión particular, una buena película debe tener una trama atrayente y fantástica para lograr ese cometido; no importa que sea de bajo presupuesto, con directores en la media, lo importante es que genere alto entretenimiento. Así como me ha ocurrido con el filme Extraterrestrial del año 2014, dirigido por Colin Minihan.
Ahora; en mi búsqueda de películas para disfrutar, ésta me había aparecido varias veces y no le había dado la oportunidad, hasta que decidí hacerlo, tenía mis dudas y sinceramente estaba equivocado, porque resultó ser muy interesante. Una trama que lleva ciencia ficción, acción, drama, suspenso y está cargada de escenas bien desarolladas; es cierto, es de bajo presupuesto y puede pasar desapercibida, pero son filmes que están ocultos y realmente entretienen. Lo cierto, es que es una experiencia psicológica que crea en nuestra mente un laberinto inexplicable; es llevarnos a lo desconocido y como eso que desconocemos, crea en nosotros ese miedo y ese temor por la búsqueda de explicaciones. Además de ello; también nos muestra, todo lo que es capaz de hacer el ser humano, por evitar que lo ocurrido no salga de las fronteras.
Definitivamente; es una película que poco a poco avanza y se va metiendo en nuestra mente, invitándonos a pensar que no estamos lejos de una posible realidad. Nos invita a pensar que al fin de cuentas, no estamos solos y que a un paso de nuestra casa puede ocurrir lo peor. Todo esto lo logra Colin Minihan, al desarrollar una historia en total aislamiento, cosa que está acostumbrado a hacer; por lo que en definitiva, logra que el espectador se meta de lleno en la historia. Su especialidad, es crear ambientes que lleven a sus actores a una total pesadilla existencial; de verdad es un genio y aquí lo ha demostrado; recuerden, todo esto es mi opinión personal, cada quien con su gusto y Extraterrestrial ha sido el mío.

En la trama encontramos personajes que han participado en películas y series algo conocidas; entre ellos tenemos al afamado y aguerrido Michael Ironside en el papel de Travis. Existen otros personajes; sin embargo, para mí, el peso de la historia y eso ustedes lo podrán determinar, cae sobre Brittany Allen encarnando a la fuerte April y Freddie Stroma como Kyle. Ambos hacen un duo muy bueno, hay química y sus acciones son muy creíbles, se nota la alegría y el amor cuando hay que hacerlo; pero de igual manera, esos sentimientos cambian drásticamente en los momentos de apremio; esa transición la hacen muy bien y ciertamente encarnan sus personajes de buena manera; mentiras, secretos, tensiones, temores, miedos, fortaleza, todo se da de manera orgánica.
Todo esto inicia con una mujer desesperada corriendo en medio de la noche y bajo la lluvia. Llega a una tienda y el encargado, aun viendo la total angustia de la mujer, de forma chocante cierra el negocio y no la deja entrar. Como puede; la chica corre a una cabina telefónica para continuar pidiendo ayuda, de pronto una luz blanca muy fuerte impacta contra la cabina y esta desaparece. El encargado sale de la tienda sorprendido y angustiado; de forma violenta la cabina cae de los cielos, pero no hay rastro de la mujer; ¿Que ha pasado, no lo sabemos?. La trama continua presentando a April y a Kyle, quienes tienen la idea de pasar un fin de semana alejado de todos, en la mañana de la familia de April; la intención de Kyle es romántica, pero April tiene algo que decir y ese sería el momento adecuado.
Pero como Kyle tiene otras intenciones invita a unos amigos; situación que no es del agrado de April y ella se molesta un poco. Ahora; lo que podría ser un fin de semana de confesión y algo de dolor por un secreto que debía salir a la luz, se convierte en un posible viaje de relajación y vacaciones; eso es lo que creen ellos y es lo que creemos nosotros. Porque hacia el pueblo donde se dirigen, están ocurriendo cosas demasiado extrañas; animales muertos sin sentido, personas desaparecidas sin rastro y desde ese momento, la trama se va poniendo más tensa y misteriosa, cuando llegan a una cabaña que está totalmente aislada de todo y de todos.
Ya en la cabaña y en horas de la noche, los chicos están de fiesta; rápidamente, ven en el cielo una especie de cometa o algo parecido, que se acerca y de pronto impacta cerca de su cabaña. Como siempre; la.mente humana es tan curiosa que todos van al lugar y lo que allí ven resulta totalmente incomprensible, están conmocionados, aturdidos y empiezan a emitir locas teorías. Lo cierto, es que al parecer se ha confirmado que no estamos solos y lo que que viene a continuación será el total terror que se mete entre los personajes; están siendo perseguidos y cazados por algo cósmico y sobrenatural. ¿Podrán salir de esto los personajes?; ¿Es cierto lo que ven sus ojos?; ¿Tendrán la capacidad para enfrentar a estas criaturas y sobrevivir ante ellos?; lo cierto es que la tensión, la angustia y la desesperación, serán elementos que estarán presentes en todo momento, nadie podrá ocultarse, nadie podra escapar, ni siquiera nosotros estamos a salvo.
El desenvolvimiento de la historia; a mi forma de ver las cosas es fantástico, porque los eventos no se dan de manera inmediata; no hay nada explícito y se presta para el juego mental entre nosotros. Digo esto, porque las acciones van creando una especie de red, que se va teniendo de manera organizada y genera total locura entre los personajes. Cada espacio que visitan es una trampa, creando un ambiente psicológico que muchos no podrán comprender; definitivamente, todo lo que ocurre nos mantiene alertas de principio a fin, sin la necesidad de dar a conocer los detalles. La iluminación juega un papel importante durante las acciones; ya que podemos pasar de un ambiente iluminado, a otro con luz tenue y temerosa, hasta la aparición repentina y angustiosa de una luz roja intensa que indica un peligro inminente. Lo mismo ocurre con el ambiente y el sonido, los cuales crean esa sensación de angustia total que semmere en cada fibra de nosotros; no hay escape en un lugar tan grande y esa sensación crece con el impacto sonoro del momento.
La película nos muestra que lo que está ocurriendo en un pequeño pueblo, podría ser una especie de experimento, apenas algo pequeño, entre cosas grandes que se pudieran estar cocinando a nivel internacional. Es un juego mental que desmorona lo que creíamos conocer y desde mi perspectiva; el filme fácilmente pudo haber sido tomado como base para realizaciones posteriores. Son teorías que siempre estarán en el tapete y nos invita a analizar, cuan arrogante puede ser la humanidad, en la búsqueda de saber si además de nosotros, hay algo más en el espacio que evite que sigamos creyendo que somos los más poderosos. Definitivamente; es un mensaje hacia la toma de conciencia colectiva.
Como dije antes; es una película que no necesita un alto presupuesto para brindar alto entretenimiento. Para mí; es una película para múltiples gustos, especialmente para aquellos que les gusta pensar, atar cabos, juntar piezas y que su mente siempre esté inquieta, ante la búsqueda de cualquier obra cinematográfica que le vuele la cabeza. Así como hice yo, debes darle una oportunidad a Extraterrestrial, porque ten por seguro que después de verla, mirar al cielo no será tan placentero como siempre lo haces. Esta película es tan buena como cualquier otra del género; me atrevo a decir, que en este género es mejor que algunas. No dejes que lo cuenten y se testigo de algo que puede cambiar tu forma de ver las cosas; no dejes que ellos te analicen, saludos y nos vemos pronto.
