Many might think so, but they’re wrong; because as long as there’s a level of suspense, mystery, drama, or frantic action driven by the struggle for survival, the viewer will naturally be glued to the screen, wanting to step into it to save the victim—and that’s where absolute empathy is created. This happens to me when I watch films of this type, where every space, every place, and every corner represents the anxiety, the claustrophobia, and, at the same time, the strength the victim must summon to persevere.
But there’s another detail: because someone who wants to escape can hear the person stalking them—they can feel their footsteps, hear their breathing, and their threatening voice—and these elements would be key to that end. But what if you couldn’t do any of that, since the silence is total and terrifying? Well, to unravel this suffocating plot, Blumhouse Productions, with its eerie intro, brings us the 2016 film Hush directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Kate Siegel, who, by the way, co-wrote the screenplay and is also Flanagan’s partner.
In short, this duo presents us with a dynamic that’s very different from what we’re used to; because normally, we’re accustomed to the intense noises that can arise in urgent situations; in contrast, in Hush, silence is both the most unsettling and the most intriguing element, because a person must resort to other methods in order to stay safe. In fact, the director achieved something significant: without even realizing it, we all become guardians of a sense of security that may prove to be fleeting.

The play features a small cast, with two actors standing out the most. Kate Siegel plays Maddie, a writer—a girl isolated from the world, deaf and mute—and in my opinion, she portrays her masterfully; anyone unfamiliar with her would swear she truly has those sensory limitations. With a relatively vulnerable appearance but an incredibly strong spirit, she draws us in so completely that we forget the scarcity of spoken dialogue—another triumph of this film. On the other hand, as is always the case in these situations, there must be an antagonist, and that role is played by none other than John Gallagher Jr., who in Hush is simply “the man”—the intruder. He’s an unscrupulous individual hiding behind the facade of someone who wouldn’t hurt a fly; that’s what makes these characters so dangerous, because the psychological cruelty he inflicts on the protagonist knows no bounds.
We’re in the woods, in a house in the middle of nowhere, with only a few neighbors—and they’re far away. There’s Maddie, looking for inspiration to write another book; she prepares dinner and strikes up a conversation with her neighbor—naturally, through sign language and lip-reading. Remember that Maddie lost her hearing at age 13 due to an illness, and to make matters worse, she also lost her ability to speak because of a botched surgery. Everything seems normal—nothing to worry about—but we know that from the very beginning, that psychological pressure is palpable. The girls say goodbye, and nothing can take away the chill running down your spine; suddenly, the neighbor Sarah comes running to Maddie’s door, desperate, and bam—we feel that stab in the back.
Sarah is being hunted by a ruthless killer who stops at nothing to finish the job; immediately, the guy realizes he might have another victim right in front of him. However, things might be different—he takes some actions, and I think he realizes the girl’s condition. From that moment on, the tension mounts; strange things happen where Maddie thinks she senses something—I felt that chill, too. Actions unfold from a distance, slow but ruthless and calculated; Maddie receives messages on her own phone—hey! This is strange, it can’t be—she gets up, slowly approaches the door, and there he is, face-to-face with the masked man.
The truth is that the plot unfolds smoothly and without limits; Maddie must set aside her limitations and sharpen her remaining senses to try to survive. On the other hand, one thing that stands out to me—and I think was a huge success—is that the relationship that develops between the characters is incredible; it’s amazing to see how that conflict becomes the deciding factor between life and death. We don’t know how this guy got there or why he’s there; we don’t know what his intentions are—is it random, or is it personal? What is certain, though, is that the desperation and fear drive him to sheer madness. Now, if you pay close attention, there’s a clue in the killer’s arc that might shed some light on the matter; it won’t be easy to decipher his actions, but in the end, you’ll understand everything. If he wanted to kill her, he would have done so, but it’s more sadistic to hunt her down—and, naturally, you’ll imagine your own endings. Will you be able to figure it out? What is certain is that physical and psychological torture will always be the order of the day.
Another positive message this film aims to convey—one that goes beyond being merely a suspense and horror movie—is that it shows us the possibility of transcending the limits of our senses, because a limitation should never be a reason not to move forward, especially when your life may depend on it. In short, we must understand that life will never be easy, so we have to draw on our strength and find the necessary resources—even where they seem nonexistent—to face adversity. The world is cruel, but we must be resilient and smart to move forward.
I’m pretty sure: Maddie is kind of shut off in her own world and can’t find a special ending for her book; from a firsthand perspective, it’s all intriguing; but have you ever stopped to think that everything that’s happened might be a figment of her imagination? I mean, could this be the ending the writer needed for her book? These are intriguing questions you’ll have to uncover in a desolate forest and a cabin in the middle of nowhere—elements that form the epicenter of a relentless struggle for survival. A vast place from which you cannot escape and a house where claustrophobia will be the main trigger right within your own home. You may have light or darkness, but the truth is that you’re at the mercy of evil, and no one will be able to help you.
From my perspective, the way all that silence is portrayed has been a prime example of emotion within the plot. We might think it’s something that has to be there because of the protagonist’s condition, but I think it goes beyond that—because, to me, it works perfectly as another character. It’s true that there are moments of noise due to the other characters’ narratives, but we really feel enveloped in that same silence that surrounds Maddie. Bueno; para descifrar toda esta trama sofocante, la productora Blumhouse con su intro tenebrosa nos trae el filme Hush del año 2016; obra bajo la dirección de Mike Flanagan y protagonizada por Kate Siegel; que por cierto, además de crear el guión en conjunto, también son pareja.

La obra cuenta con un reducido cuadro actoral; donde se destacan con mayor fuerza dos de ellos. Kate Siegel es la escritora Maddie; una chica aislada del mundo, sorda muda y que a mi parecer, lo ha hecho de manera magistral; quien no la conoce, diría que en verdad tiene esas limitaciones sensoriales. Con una apariencia relativamente vulnerable, pero de alma demasiado fuerte; y sin darnos cuenta de ese detalle, nos olvidamos de la poca existencia de diálogos verbales; otro logro de esta película. Por otra parte; como siempre en estos casos, debe existir un antagonista y este no es más que John Gallagher Jr; quien en Hush, simplemente es el hombre, el invasor. Alguien sin escrúpulos, bajo la piel de una persona que no mataría a una mosca; eso es lo peligroso de estos seres, porque la crueldad mental que ejerce sobre la protagonista, no tiene límites.
Estamos en el bosque, en una casa en medio de la nada, solo pocos vecinos y a larga distancia. Allí está Maddie en busca de inspiración para escribir otro libro; prepara una cena y entabla conversación con su vecina; lógicamente a través de señales y lectura de labios. Recordemos que Maddie perdió la audición a los 13 años a causa de una enfermedad y para completar, debido a una mala cirugía también perdió el sentido del habla. Todo parece normal, nada que lamentar, pero sabemos que desde el primer momento se siente esa presión psicológica. Las chicas se despiden y nada puede quitar el escalofríos que se siente en la piel; de pronto, la vecina Sarah llega corriendo a las puertas de Maddie, está desesperada y pum sentimos ese flechazo en la espalda.
Sarah es perseguida por un despiadado asesino que no tiene límites y termina su trabajo; de inmediato, el tipo se da cuenta que puede tener otra presa frente a él. Sin embargo; las cosas pueden ser diferentes, ejecuta algunas acciones y creo que se da cuenta de la condición de la chica. Por otro lado; una cosa que me llama la atención y creo que fue un acierto enorme, es que la relación que se establece entre los personajes es increíble; es grandioso ver como ese conflicto, se convierte en el factor determinante entre morir o sobrevivir. No sabemos como este tipo llegó allí, por que está allí; no sabemos cuáles son sus intenciones, es al azar, es algo personal; lo que si es cierto, es que la desesperación y el miedo son una verdadera locura. Ahora; si eres detallista, en el arco del asesino hay una pista que te pudiera dar algunas luces al respecto; no será fácil descifrar las acciones, pero al final lo entenderás todo, si él quisiera matarla lo hubiera hecho, pero más sádico resulta cazarla y como es lógico, te imaginarás tus propios finales, ¿Podrás lograrlo?. Lo que si es cierto; es que la tortura física y psicológica siempre estarán a la orden del día.
Otro punto a favor que se desea transmitir con esta película y que va más allá de tratarte de solo suspenso y terror; es que nos enseña la posibilidad de poder sobrepasar los límites de nuestros sentidos, porque una limitación no puede ser motivo para no salir adelante, más aún cuando tu vida puede depender de ello. En pocas palabras; debemos entender que la vida jamás será fácil, por lo que hay que sacar fuerzas y encontrar los recursos necesarios donde no las hay para enfrentar las adversidades. El mundo es cruel, pero hay que ser resilientes e inteligentes para avanzar.
Sin temor a equivocarme; Maddie está como cerrada en su mundo y no encuentra un final especial para su libro, de primera mano todo es intrigante; pero ¿Te has puesto a pensar que todo lo ocurrido, pudiera provenir desde su imaginación?; digo ¿Sería este el final que la escritora necesitaba para su libro?; interrogantes interesantes, que debes descubrir en un bosque desolado y en una cabaña que está en el medio de la nada; elementos éstos, que son el epicentro de una lucha sin cuartel por la supervivencia. Un sitio enorme hacia donde no puedes escapar y una casa donde la claustrofobia será el principal detonante dentro de tu propio hogar. Puedes tener luz o oscuridad, lo cierto es que estás a merced de la maldad y nadie podra ayudarte.
Desde mi perspectiva; la puesta en escena de todo ese silencio, ha sido un total ejemplo de emoción dentro de la trama. Pudiéramos pensar que es algo que obligatoriamente debe existir por la condición de la protagonista, pero creo que va más allá, porque para mí funciona perfectamente como un personaje más. Es cierto que hay momentos de ruido debido a la narrativa de los otros personajes, pero realmente nos sentimos envueltos en ese mismo silencio que envuelve a Maddie. En fin; es una película que amerita mucha discusión, porque hay bastantes cosas que analizar y disfrutar; saludos y nos vemos pronto.
