So today , I decided I was going to explore horror-thrillers as the two genre put together would make a great film. And although this one thrives on minimalism, it was an intriguing pick but trust me I was so frustrated.

    Synopsis

    IMG_2631.jpeg

Maddie Young (played by Kate Siegel), is a deaf and mute writer who lives in isolation in the woods. Her quiet world is shattered when a masked killer invades her home, toying with her in a sadistic game of cat and mouse. Cut off from any means of communication and unable to hear her attacker, Maddie must rely on her instincts, intelligence and resourcefulness to survive the night.

    My Review and Rating

    IMG_2628.jpeg

First question that came to mind during the first few minutes of watching this film was “do people actually make a home in the middle of nowhere just because they want to be isolated?” Let's say “yes” people do, the next question was “why then is the house or are the houses not built with bricks instead of fragile woods and glass?” It was frustrating enough that Maddie was deaf and mute, why put her in a fragile house if she was going to get attacked by a psycho?

    IMG_2634.jpeg

Anyway, one of this film’s strongest elements is its use of sound or rather, the lack of it. Mike Flanagan(the director) does great by placing the audience in Maddie’s shoes by manipulating sound design, creating an immersive and unsettling experience. The moments of absolute silence, where we’re forced to see the world as Maddie does, add to the film’s tension and make the stakes feel higher than in a typical home invasion thriller. Kate delivers a strong performance as Maddie. She’s not really a helpless victim; she’s smart, determined, and adaptive, making every moment of her battle with the intruder gripping to watch. Also, the film doesn’t rely on excessive boring dialogue or unnecessary backstory. Everything unfolds in real time, making it feel raw and immediate although in the end, I was left to question if everything that happened was a mere figment of Maddie’s imagination for her new book.

    IMG_2633.jpeg

On the other hand, John Gallagher Jr.’s portrayal of the masked killer is chilling, especially when he revealed his face. Unlike many horror villains who like to remain in the shadows, he enjoys taunting Maddie. This act adds a psychological layer to the terror.

    IMG_2636.jpeg

While this film does great in many areas, it does have a few weak points. One, the killer’s motivations are never explored. I know some very terrible humans go about killing people for fun but the lack of motivation on this guy’s character gave him off as a plot device rather than a fully developed character. I know the film is a minimalist type and it’s part of its appeal, but a little more depth to his character could have made the psychological stakes even stronger.

Additionally, there were moments where Maddie’s survival choices felt slightly unrealistic and very upsetting. Don’t get it twisted, she’s incredibly resourceful, but some of her decisions; like not immediately trying to escape when she had a chance, were so frustrating.

    IMG_2635.jpeg

All in all, Hush is an intense thriller that excels on atmosphere and smart direction. It’s not about cheap jump scares but about sustained tension and psychological warfare.

If you’re a fan of tightly executed thrillers with a unique protagonist, this one is definitely worth a watch.

    Rating: 4/5

Hello friends of the Movies & Tv community, I hope you are well today and that this new year is full of blessings for everyone 🥳. Yesterday I was encouraged to watch a movie that was not the one I had planned to see but that I had in my Letterboxd watchlist and reading what it was about caught my attention so I decided to watch it. This movie is called Hush and it's from 2016 directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Kate Siegel and John Gallagher Jr.

The plot of the film tells the story of a woman named Maddie (Kate Siegel) who lives alone in a house in the middle of a wooded area and has very little contact with her family or other people because at some point in her life she suffered a difficult time that left her completely deaf so she had to get used to her new way of life and learn to communicate through sign language.

Yet Maddie is a highly intelligent woman who has a close relationship with Sarah (Samantha Sloyan) a neighbor who lives nearby and is always trying to maintain a friendly relationship with Maddie, plus Sarah is a big fan of the books that Maddie has written and they always have topics of conversation about the books. Everything seems normal in Maddie's life, who at the time is about to finish her latest book but is having difficulty deciding on a suitable ending.

Things get murky when Maddie realizes there's a person hanging around her house and decides she must lock all the doors for safety. There's a man (John Gallagher Jr.) who leaves her a clear message: I will torture you until you ask me to kill you, with this sentence Maddie fears for her life and starts a psychological terror and Maddie is in survival mode trying to get out alive from that situation where she will have to be smarter than that man who wants to see her suffer and die.

This movie is quite old and it's amazing that no one talks about it, maybe because some people didn't like it or found it too soft especially for being of the Thriller and Horror genre, I liked it a lot because it was short but strong and direct about what the story is about. Maddie has a strong connection with this man and a survival instinct where despite not hearing she can get to feel the vibrations of certain noises, this helps her to know where this evil man is, plus she has a voice as she calls it that tells her what she could do to escape and what not.

I feel that this is now one of my favorite movies of this genre and that for being a bit of a simple story it has the tension and suspenseful moments needed to make you feel the anxiety of being inside the story and seeing how Maddie does her best to live. But above all I was impressed by the ending, it was like a surprise 🫢 since I didn't expect that maybe as some say all this that she lived through helped her or she used it somehow to be able to finish her last book. You have to watch it to give me your impression of this movie, I enjoyed it and would watch it again just for the fact of reliving Maddie's story and how she was within her means a very astute and brave woman.

Jessica Lange (two-time Oscar winner) plays a woman obsessed with her son and suffering from unhealthy jealousy.

She plays the mother-in-law no one would want to have because her relationship with her daughter-in-law is so difficult.

That daughter-in-law is personified by Gwyneth Paltrow, who does a great job playing the sincere young woman who lived with a profound lack of emotion and has now found happiness, or so she imagined.

    image.png Source

Both are strong pillars of the show, both fight to the death for a young man who is oblivious to everything around him.

Like most thrillers of that decade (Sleeping with the Enemy, A Kiss Before Dying, etc.), it's easy to sense where the plot is headed.

While it has some surprising twists, it is admittedly a little predictable.

All in all, this is an entertaining and gripping film. A perfect film to watch in an afternoon and have a good time as the plot connects easily.

    image.png Source

Excellent performance by Jessica Lange, one of the best actresses of all time and the heart and soul of the story.

Gwyneth Paltrow plays the usual role: a good girl who doesn't hurt a fly, complains about everything, is a victim of everything, that is, as usual, explained as usual. Johnathon Schaech plays the supporting role in this intense one-woman drama with twists and turns.

Technical highlights include cinematography by Andrew Dunn and a great score by Chris Young (emulating Jerry Goldsmith).

A story that is no great wonder as it has a somewhat trite storyline, but still makes you interested in knowing the ending, and when it's all over you think: "I've had a good time".

  4. Opinión de la película "Hush"/Movie review "Hush"@lumpymoon1000d

Los 5 sentidos, la salvación para nuevas ideas en el cine/The 5 senses, the salvation for new ideas in the cinema

Although I have to accept that my personality is usually a saboteur when structuring a debate before a new movie, predicting the development of the story and taking away the charm of the premieres, it has been difficult to please my expectations on the subject, so finding myself a diamond in the rough, I like too much to recommend it at any opportunity so that it has the support it deserves.

Within this story, I would love to highlight the magnificent transformation that the villain of the film presented at the moment of realizing about the hearing disability of his future victim, because after his first murder, where unfortunately the friend of our protagonist was a victim and I would like to consider that her death for me was too simple, boring and very little exciting; the second act in which said villain ended up finding himself, forced him to evolve his way of stalking his prey, so as not to lose the pleasure of his own game and improve his experience, exploiting and challenging the victim to realize the capabilities that this one possessed; considering that again it is a point in favor for the inclusion in the horror genre, increasing my ecstasy for feeling myself in a hunt where the strongest and most skilled will triumph.

Despite being a movie that was released in 2016, I consider it was too ahead of its time, as it took a risk by giving us a suspenseful alternative that kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end, tell me what you thought if you have already seen it and if not, believe me it will be very worthwhile. Thanks for reading.

  5. Hush (Film): Review.@martinmcfly2770d

I have some days without recommending anything, but hey, that was not because of the prices on the market, but because I had not had enough time, sometimes I have to decide between watching a film or writing a post. Today I decided on Hush, a classic Slasher released on Netflix.

    ---

Year: 2016. Category: Slasher. Director: Mike Flanagan Cast: Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr., Michael Trucco, Samantha Sloyan, Emilia Graves.

    Plot

A young writer who became deaf in her adolescence, now lives in a house in the forest away from the city, suddenly a masked subject, upon discovering her disability, begins to stalk and play with her with the aim of killing her.

    Opinion

A personal anecdote that I have about this film is that when I started watching it, I did not realize that, for some unknown reason, the TV had the volume at the minimum, that is, you could not hear anything, and as I knew that the protagonist of the film was deaf, I thought they had made the film without audio, lol, you can imagine how stupid I felt when I realized what was really happening.

The first minutes of the movie I saw them without hearing anything, and I must say, I really liked it, they transmitted an incredible immersive feeling, unfortunately or not, in a scene in which the killer listens to a noise provoked by the protagonist, and acts consequently, I realize that something is wrong. It made sense that there was no audio when they showed us the scene from the protagonist's perspective, mainly because she is deaf, but it did not make sense to show us the scene without audio if it was shown from the killer's perspective. So I discovered my mistake, and I really laughed a lot about how stupid I was on that occasion.

I do not know if because of my personal experience with the film I judge it differently than the rest of the people, but after I overcame my mistake and continued watching the film with audio, what was new to me, it was not new anymore, so the only thing I was liking about the movie disappeared.

The interesting and ironic thing is that the sound is great, yes, the sound, when I finished watching the movie, I saw the first minutes again, and the film starts with a scene in the kitchen where you can hear everything, and it's definitely great, even though I saw it without sound the first time and I also liked how it is with sound.

Another interesting point of the film is the disparity of strength between the murderer and the victim. Films of this style always go to the female character to show the physical vulnerability with respect to danger, and that by a process in which the character faces fear, he manages to confront the murderer by means of cunning. Well, this film is what it does is to bring that to its highest expression, because the victim is not only a woman, but also is deaf, so she has to be more cunning than usual to compensate for her weakness, something that It really does not happen that way, according to my perception, the protagonist acts in a somewhat absurd way, that I can not qualify as intelligent, even so, it helps the fact that the murderer is not very intelligent either, in fact, he is a bit idiotic.

The performances are decent, the female protagonist is the only one that makes it a little better, especially because of the condition of her character. The rest of the actors do well for a film of this type, nothing worth more than the average in this genre.

I think one of the things that I did not like about the movie was the character of the murderer, he had absolutely no depth, I never understood his motivation, what leads him to kill? nobody knows...

I can only say that it is the classic film in which there is a murderer and a victim, and there is a situation in which one pursues the other while he runs away and hides from him.

    Trailer

    Score

    6/10

Actually the movie leaves me with a sense of indecision, I can not say if I liked it or not, and I do not even know why. I'll wait some time to see her again, for now I recommend her only if you have nothing better to see.
