Well folks, I think it's time to put my extensive knowledge of horror films on the table, I saw this film several weeks ago and it caught my attention. Not because it was particularly good or anything like that, from the beginning there are obvious mythical clichés that one can find in these films, what really caught my attention is that it made use of a cliché that I haven't seen for a long time, and that made the film essentially remind me of Scream in a way. So I'm going to talk about You're Next, a film that came out around 2011/2013 and is directed by Adam Wingard (yes, the guy who made the horrible live action of Death Note).
Bueno amigos, creo que es ahora de poner mis amplios conocimientos acerca de películas de terror sobre la mesa, hace varias semanas que me vi esta película y me llamó bastante la atención. No porque fuera especialmente buena o algo por el estilo, desde el comienzo hay evidentes clichés míticos que uno puede encontrar en éstas películas, lo que en verdad captó mi atención es que se hiciera uso de un cliché que ya no veía desde hace mucho tiempo, y que hizo que la película me recordara en esencia a Scream de cierta forma. Así que les voy a hablar de You're Next, una película que salió aproximadamente por el 2011/2013 y está dirigida por Adam Wingard (sí, el señor ese que hizo el horrible live action de Death Note).
First before starting with the synopsis, I want to emphasize that this work begins with a sex scene and then the people who were committing the act are killed, a textbook cliché; there I thought it was going to be just another film in the pile, but no, it's not. Continuing with the synopsis: the film tells the story of Erin, a girl who accompanies her boyfriend Crispian to a family reunion at his parents' house, where his brothers are going to arrive the next day with their respective partners, everything goes wrong when one of these person of the couples is killed by an arrow when he looks out of the window. Here begins a home invasion where most of the cast will die one by one, although Erin will make it quite difficult for the killers, making them the victims.
Primero antes de comenzar con la sinopsis, quiero recalcar que esta obra comienza con una escena de sexo para que posteriormente sean asesinadas las personas que estaban cometiendo dicho acto, un cliché de manual; allí llegué a pensar que iba a ser una película más del montón pero no. Continuando con la sinopsis: el filme nos narra la historia de Erin, una chica que acompañará a su novio Crispian a una reunión familiar en casa de sus padres, donde van a llegar al día siguiente sus hermanos con sus respectivas parejas, todo se torcerá cuando una persona de éstas parejas sea asesinada por una flecha al asomarse por la ventana. Aquí empezará una invasión doméstica donde la mayoría de los integrantes del elenco van a morir uno a uno, aunque Erin se lo pondrá bastante difícil a los asesinos, convirtiéndolos a ellos en las víctimas.
As you can deduce from the brief description I gave you, this is a classic slasher with a final girl feature. I hadn't seen something with these elements for a long time, because as everyone knows, the horror film market is currently full of the supernatural genre, ghosts and spirits, which are becoming more and more predictable and don't really scare anyone. The problem with horror lies in the exploitation of patterns, as if they have to comply with them in order to be considered horror, causing things like in my case, I can easily see when a scare is going to happen or guess the ending as soon as it starts. I see the redemption of the genre in directors like Jordan Peele, who mix humour with horror making the experience totally bearable, having twists and turns in their repertoire.
Como podrán deducir por la breve descripción que les di, estamos ante un slasher clásico con la característica de la final girl. Tenía bastante tiempo sin ver algo con éstos elementos ya que como todos saben el mercado de filmes de terror está actualmente repleto del género sobrenatural, fantasmas y espíritus, que cada día son más predecibles y no llegan a asustar a nadie. El problema con el terror reside en la explotación de patrones, como si tuvieran que cumplir con ellos para que sea considerado de ese tipo, causando cosas como en mi caso, que veo fácilmente cuando va a ocurrir un susto o adivino el final apenas comenzar. Veo la redención del género en directores como Jordan Peele, que mezclan el humor con el terror haciendo la experiencia totalmente llevadera, teniendo giros de tuerca en su repertorio.
I can't say that You're Next takes things from Jordan Peele's creations, when it doesn't. This film came out a long time before Get Out. Nor can I say it's the pioneer that started a revolution. That never happened. It just shares several things with Peele's style. There's a black comedy throughout that makes everything less tedious, there's a fairly well measured tension, and there's a slightly predictable but not at all unpleasant twist (it doesn't come off as unpleasant because from the start you're given clues as to who the culprits of the invasion are, inviting you to deduce). What stands out the most is the number of deaths it handles, most of them very creative, which is what a slasher film should excel in. What I found impeccable was the use of the final girl, Erin being one of the best I've seen to date, we all surely agree that we love it when the protagonists stand up to the enemy and hate it when they run away like cowards here and there.
No puedo decir que You're Next toma cosas de las creaciones de Jordan Peele, cuando no es así. Esta película salió mucho tiempo antes que Get Out. Tampoco puedo decir que es la pionera que inició una revolución. Nunca pasó eso. Solo comparte varias cosas con el estilo de Peele. Durante todo el metraje se hace uso de una comedia negra que hace todo menos tedioso, hay una tensión bastante bien medida y cuenta con un giro de tuerca un poco predecible pero para nada desagradable (no llega a desagradar porque desde el principio te dan pistas de quienes son los culpables de la invasión, invitándote a deducir). Lo que más destaca es la cantidad de muertes que maneja, siendo en su mayoría todas muy creativas, que es en sí en lo que debe destacar una película slasher. Lo que encontré impecable fue el uso de la final girl, siendo Erin una de las mejores que he visto hasta la fecha, todos de seguro concordamos que nos encanta cuando los protagonistas le hacen frente al enemigo y odiamos cuando huyen como cobardes por aquí y por allá.
In conclusion, You're Next is an entertaining film to pass the time, it can even be watched with the family. It is not the eighth wonder of the world but it easily fulfils its objective, to deliver a decent quality slasher product by executing one of the clichés that nowadays were almost forgotten. The girl who at first seemed harmless turns out to be an unstoppable killing machine, and even the perpetrators become victims. It is worth noting that the performances are not great either, they could be much better, but it is understandable that almost all the actors were unknown. So if you have nothing to do, I recommend you see it if you want to see a blood fest.
En conclusión, You're Next es una película entretenida para pasar el rato, hasta puede ser vista en familia. No es la octava maravilla del mundo pero cumple fácilmente con su objetivo, otorgar un producto slasher de calidad decente ejecutando uno de los clichés que hoy en día se tenían casi que olvidados. La chica que al principio parecía inofensiva resulta ser una máquina de matar imparable, que hasta los victimarios se convertirán en víctimas. Cabe a resaltar que las actuaciones tampoco son la gran cosa, podrían estar muchos mejores pero se comprende por el hecho que casi todos los actores eran desconocidos. Así que si no tienes nada que hacer, te recomiendo que la veas si quieres ver un festival de sangre.
