Crystal Lake: like father, like son [Eng/Esp]

Hello, hello, TV series fans!

A new horror series recently premiered—an official prequel set in the Friday the 13th universe—that focuses on Jason’s mother, Pamela Voorhees. It draws on elements from the original 1980 film while rewriting various aspects of the canon, such as Jason’s origin and his immortality. The series is called Crystal Lake.

This series recounts the events from Pamela Voorhees’s perspective, telling the story from Jason’s tragic drowning—which drove Pamela mad—all the way to the massacre at the camp. This series isn’t just about gruesome and sickening deaths; it also explores the Voorhees family and the town itself, seeking to understand how the legend of Jason began—the curse of the woods that would haunt the villagers and unsuspecting vacationers—leading up to the events depicted in the films.

The series introduces us to Pamela Voorhees, a single mother and cook at Crystal Lake Camp who is devoted to her son Jason—whom she simply wants to protect and make happy. In stark contrast to what he was and what he will become, Jason is a kind and good-natured boy who loves the woods and survival books. But he is severely mistreated and bullied because of his appearance, and his only friend is a girl named Grace, who, to tell the truth, isn’t quite right in the head.

But after a lapse in supervision by the camp counselors, Jason drowns, and Pamela’s already troubled mind begins to unravel further and further. The indifference of certain townspeople to her grief, scathing comments about her son’s appearance, and the past haunting Pamela and her son drive her to commit her first double murder—and, as if something had snapped inside Pamela, anyone who bothers her or gets in her way will die a truly horrific death.

Pamela wasn't born crazy or evil; she was turned into that, which gives a deeper understanding of why she acts the way she does—beyond what the first movie showed us. She’s not just a mother grieving the loss of her son; she’s a woman who feels deep guilt over her perceived failure as a mother—her inability to protect him—and, combined with other factors, this leads Pamela to believe she can only redeem herself by eliminating certain people from her life.

IMDb

The approach is more psychological compared to the films and, at the same time, more dramatic, with Linda Cardellini (Pamela Voorhees) bringing multiple facets to the character through a powerful performance, externalizing Pamela’s shattered psyche through her frantic, uninhibited, and lunatic behavior; in fact, her performance is among the best in the series.

This series moves away from the supernatural vibe of some of the films in the franchise and takes a more human approach, reimagining the canon established in the movies. Even so, I feel like it’s designed so that die-hard fans can spot details from the films within the series.

At times, the pacing felt a bit slow, and some characters seemed irrelevant at first but later proved to be very useful. The truth is that many are drawn to the gritty aesthetic and violence of series and movies set in the ’80s, with that little tune that screams “horror scene”—a hallmark of slasher movies—and I think the first and last episodes were the best in this regard. And the ending—well, it’s almost as if Pamela broke the fourth wall and told us to stay away from the woods.
