It is not easy to find such a movie in the context of independent cinema that depicts the dynamics of the family and the process of change so realistically and without pretentiousness. The film that India Donaldson directs for the first time does exactly that, giving the audience a realistic portrayal of a young woman’s development. The action of the film is set on two days of a hiking trip in the Catskills and focuses on the relations between the 17-year-old girl Sam and her father Chris and his friend from college Matt. On the surface, it is a story of a family going for a wood trip, but the generational clash, passive aggression, and the need for an individual to fight for one’s rights against the traditional values are gradually revealed, for a film that has a rather narrow plot and focuses on the significance of the interaction between characters, the audience is forced to consider their own family dynamics and the painful process of growing up. Sam’s character transformation is depicted slowly and the audience gets to experience a clear development of the character. This will be more attractive to a specific audience due how good the capture of the landscape, sound and potentially how relaxing the film can be, the downside is how these aspects could turn it into a boring but meaningful production.
The plot of the film is focused from the point of view of Sam as she is torn between the two middle-aged men whose pride and unsolved issues are the main driving force of the plot. This is an interesting aspect because Matt lost his son Dylan and he was meant to be part of the trip; Sam has to deal with this awkwardness but she proved to be mature and calm all the times, unlike the other elders who display childish tendencies over and over again.
Chris, played with complexity by James Le Gros, turns out to be a tight ass who wants to control everything on the other hand Matt, acted by Danny McCarthy, tries to cover up his weakness, the film is at its best when it comes to presenting the underlying conflicts and passive aggression of the characters' interactions mostly unresolved issues they had and are coming up during this trip. Sam, played with much charm by the newcomer Lily Collias, has to become a middleman and a confidante for the grown-ups' problems and get praise in what is rather condescending.
Behind the Scenes
It is the feature directorial debut of India Donaldson who has mentioned the inspiration from real-life experiences of camping with her father. The project was initiated during the pandemic as for the first time in her life since teenage Donaldson was staying at home and could focus on her thoughts and the idea of being ‘the good one’ in a family. The production team consisted of the producers Diana Irvine, Graham Mason, and Wilson Cameron, and all of them were quite cooperative. He also said that they made the film by calling friends and asking them to make a movie together.
Wilson Cameron was the cinematographer who worked hard together with the director to achieve the look and feel of the film, a major aspect of production that can be discussed is the shooting on location especially in the Catskills area, to get the look that he wanted in the show, Cameron used an Arri Alexa Mini and Blackmagic Pocket 4K camera with Zeiss Super Speed lenses, got this information doing some digging about the production online. Some of the challenges that affected the production include ticks, thunderstorms, and even meetings with bears which were in addition to the planned scenes and this made the shooting of the movie to be for 12 days only, after all it is literally a hiking trip.
The main character is Sam, played by Lily Collias who is a relatively new talented actress, portraying the character of a 17-year-old girl. She starred in the 2022 drama film "Palm Trees and Power Lines" with Gretchen Mol. She as Sam has been compared to Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone, and Thomasin McKenzie in Leave No Trace, which proves she is one talent that the movie industry should look out for.
It is worth mentioning that James Le Gros who portrays Sam’s father Chris has been in the industry for more than three decades. Le Gros has been a prominent character in both the independent and the commercial film industry featured in "Drugstore Cowboy", "Living in Oblivion", and "Zodiac".
Completing the main cast we have Danny McCarthy who plays Matt, Chris’s best friend. McCarthy has appeared in both films and television shows such as "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs", "Stronger", "Elvis & Nixon", and HBO’s "Somebody Somewhere".
Many film critics and viewers have described the movie as good and realistic, with the focus on the development of the characters’ relationships noted as the film’s strong points, as they provide a unique opportunity to dive into the characters’ personalities. Many critics have noted that Donaldson’s narrative is rather restrained; he prefers not to introduce clear conflicts, but rather potential conflicts, and mutual passive aggressive behavior that keeps building up over the film's progress to eventually climax.
Some people have complained that the movie is slow and that the plot is not very engaging, but many viewers for the same reason enjoy the absence of a fast pace and lowered tones. The slow accumulation of tension and the characters’ progression have been named as the strategies that affect the movie’s impact on the audience, probably nowadays a streaming movie rather than theater.
Themes and Messages
The main theme that has been deduced by many goes back to the struggle in the parent and child relationship as
children grow into adulthood. Sam’s story is viewed as a sensitive and dramatic experience of the time when a youth starts realizing that their parents are not perfect people, eventually thinking they can be their own independent authority.
Another major concern that critics have noted is the attempts to analyze the image of the “good child”. Sam’s character is depicted as intelligent and obedient, which are positive traits, but the movie expresses how those assets can be used by the elders negatively. The part of the story has prompted discussions about the stress due to society’s expectations and the need for youth to set boundaries even for family members.
The movie made its way through various independent film festivals such as Sundance and Cannes. It is evident that India Donaldson is a director to be recognized. Her first feature is notably praised among critics and the audience; the film is described as realistic to the point that it might look like a documentary at certain points, of a young woman’s determination to make a life of her own in the face of her complex relationship with the grown-ups who surround her.
Overall, I'm certainly this is a film I would probably enjoy the most watching with my wife. This is a very thoughtful film that is very simple without many complex scenes other than their own relationship problems that, after all, is what sometimes can make any film under any genre way more interesting and enjoyable. It is the example of how the horror genre has evolved thanks to the more psychological aspects of films nowadays instead of the classic scare jump. Drama is a big part of any movie, and Good One (2024) based on the online comments, reviews, and what I have seen so far from the trailer does look like the peak of it, trying to describe this film in a way.
This time around the show that got a lot of attention and I also mention before that it could be a hidden gem is called "Those About to Die", it is based in ancient Rome, to be more specific and generic its very similar to the movie Gladiator probably a great opportunity to anchor on the popularity of the upcoming Gladiator movie, but this time we got more than Gladiators, we get more games like chariot races and a lot of political power involve. This series has gather a lot of attention from critics from both sides, the series is based on a non fiction book published in 1958 by Daniel P. Manni, which depicted the real life scenario of that time. The director of this show is Roland Emmerich, who directed such movies as “Independence Day” and other similar blockbusters. It is a large scale production with many characters, multiple plots, and attempts to portray all facets of Roman society, the rich and the poor, the clean and the filthy. Some people like that the show is built on the switch between different characters and their story line, while others find it hard to follow. There are political intrigues, wars, family disputes and it also brings in some major themes such as oppression of blacks and the issue of power.
What I can say about this show is that it keeps the pace across episodes, it is not like those slow and sometimes boring series where a person can think for an entire episode. Nope, this one moves from one scene to another and from one character to another as if it has so much to tell but that is also one of the problems from this show, I will talk about it latter. It might be a bit overwhelming for some people, they say that it does not allow the viewer to develop the characters’ personalities, get what each is about, but if you are the type of person who gets easily bored then this could be just for you. That is something like the show is telling the audience, “If you do not like this scene, just wait, we will give you something new to better on the next block, this is something similar to other shows that know how to replace action with drama and suspense like Game of Thrones or House of The Dragons does. It is never predictable which can be rather thrilling at times. It’s one thing to be sitting through a scene where the lords and ladies are having a heated conversation in a grand hall and the next you are in the middle of a gladiator battle. It definitely makes things less boring.
This is not an ordinary show in which all the fight scenes seem to be similar. The creators of Those About to Die have really made an effort to shake things up a little. For instance, the gladiator fights were not enough, they describe how other events like fighting animals or getting traitors devour by animals were a thing back in the day. It is not just two men sword fighting at each other but they add so many variations. One of the scenes is when Kwame has to fight with weapons that he has never used before and he is tied to his opponent, this is not a fight of the fittest, it is a fight of the intelligent, of the quick witted, something that in fact was not in the well known Gladiator movie, something that I appreciate very much. Such an approach to the action sequences helps to avoid the cliches and makes the scenes more interesting. It’s not only the fact of violence but the process of character depiction and development, the way they act and think. It is not only the gladiator stuff as well. Chariot races are also quite significant with all the action and thrills that come with it, I cannot deny that the director Roland Emmerich knows how to bring out the big and the grand.
Interesting Characters
Contrary to what some critics have to say, the show does a fairly decent job with the characters. Yes, there are a lot of them and at times it seems as if one has to maintain a consistent story of them all. However, each of them has its own well defined objectives and motives for the actions they perform. You have got Tenax, a business man who comes from the lowest on the lather who is looking to cause some stir in the racing gambling, trying to get to the top of Rome and create his own faction. There is Titus and Domitian, two siblings who are in the process of a power struggle as to who will be the next emperor. Elia and his brothers are dreaming of becoming successful horse breeders, who eventually end up becoming way more than just horse breeders, all the way up to chariot drivers. And Cala and her family just want to get back home to Nubia, after her two daughters and son where caught and sold as slave. This is something that the show does really well, as it is clear as to why each of these people are acting the way they are, how through each episodes their life start to connect with each other in a different way, this TV series sounds and look complicated to follow because of this specifically, its a big web of story lines that took time to connect with each other. Jojo Macari as Domitian is quite entertaining to watch because you are never quite sure if he is really intelligent or just pretends to be. Goncalo Almeida’s portrayal of Elia is quite innocent and naive which is something quite rare in this rather bleak series.
It is as if the show cannot choose which narrative it wishes to explore, and it explores all of them, you have the political aspect with the emperor and his sons, the criminal aspect with Tenax and the gamblers, the slaves trying to be reunited, the chariot racers, the gladiators, it just goes on and on, I hope there is a second season. However, since all of these are potential plots for the show, packing all of them into one show makes everything seem rather superficial with the exception of Tenax story I believe he is the only one that really got develop. Right when you begin to develop some interest in the fate of one character you are transferred to another character’s story, it's is like having five different TVs on and watching five different shows at the same time, for this some people may enjoy the fact that there is so much happening at the same time, while others may find it confusing.
The series is attempting to be a political drama, action series, historical piece, and social statement at the same time, it is quite all right for a show to have many layers, however, does not seem to know which one is the most crucial. This lack of focus results in the fact that although the show may be enjoyable during its airing, it lacks substance mostly due to the missing backstory of the characters.
I cant denied its is very entertaining on its own way, there are good aspects to it as well as the not so good ones, you have a show that is never predictable, it has many plots and always has something new to present to the viewer. The fight choreography is well thought out and entertaining to watch, and there are some cool characters in the series. If you are in the mood for something that does not require much of your brain power then this could be for you, just go with the flow but do not expect the most dramatic or suspenseful series, it is rather chaotic. If you are in the mood for something that is more meaningful and has much substance, then this series is not for you, but if you are in the mood for historical drama in the form of ancient Rome with a touch of politics, then it might be worth the watch.
The film adaptation of the loved and successful video game series is coming, and fans will be able to see the dangerous world of Pandora on the big screen. This sci fi action comedy is set to give fans of the games intense action with great comedy to boot with a cast of characters that is as large as their imagination. The transition from console to the big screen has not been that smooth, and the production experienced some difficulties on its way to the big screen.
On this article I go through certain aspects of the film just to give a preview of it along with some expectations, starting with the main cast and moving up to the production controversy, that there were a few although nothing critical. I also look up what other fans are expecting from it gathering a slight opinion of what fans and critics are saying as well as the possible themes or messages that can be deciphered from the story, and how this adaptation of the movie can be placed in the context of video game movies. Even as a fan of the game or just interested in this new sci fi movie, adaptations are not always easy to achieve and this is some what on the line of make it out but the comedy side I'm not so sure.
Lilith is a bounty hunter with a kind of mystery, hidden back story, it is clear that she has a sinister past that she wants to keep to herself, but as with many other things in life, destiny has other plans for the heroine of the story who is not interested in this at all. She goes back to her home planet Pandora, to fight for the future of the universe in what could be her last mission. The story starts with a space pirate known as the S. O. B of the universe Atlas seeking for the help of Lilith to locate his daughter who is also a space pirate. This is not your run of the mill rescue operation though. The girl is believed to have the unlimited power and therefore the artful and sly creature as well as all the merciless and alien monsters on the planet of Pandora are hunting her.
Knowing she can’t handle this job alone, Lilith puts together a team of misfits, each bringing their own unique skills to the table:Knowing she can’t handle this job alone, Lilith puts together a team of misfits, each bringing their own unique skills to the table:
Roland: A foul-mouthed, tough as nails gun-for-hire who is on a mission to right the wrongs of his past, played by Kevin Hart.
Tiny Tina: A young boy who is not more than twelve years old and is the leader of the wild kids and an expert in explosives.
Krieg: The muscular bodyguard who protects Tiny Tina to some extent is also depicted as being a huge man.
Tannis: A mad scientist who has seen it all and has done it all.
Claptrap: A robot that can speak and whose voice is done by the actor Jack Black.
This could be a group of people that one would not expect to be put together, however if they want to escape the dangers of Pandora and complete their mission, then they have to rise to the occasion and start co operating. On their way through the rough terrain, the team has to fight with dangerous robbers and other aliens. Every event through the story challenges them to the maximum and displays their skill in spectacular stunts, it is not all about the shooting and the boom boom though. The strength of the story is in friendships between these misfits who finally find companionship and confidence in themselves.
A Rocky Road to the Big Screen
The process of adapting this popular series of video games to the big screen had a couple of ups and downs, the shooting completed in 2021, but the movie has been through huge changes. Among the most significant problems, it is necessary to mention the absence of director Eli Roth during the re shoots. Gore comic book adaptation "Deadpool" director Tim Miller was brought in to take charge of the two week re shoots in early 2023, this new shift in the creative direction was viewed as negative and people doubted the quality and cohesiveness of the film due to the lack of probably continuation by the director.
Other than that, Craig Mazin’s involvement became another bone of contention, when riginally Mazin was credited as a co writer for the show but he later denied ever being a part of the show, with this revelation made people start questioning the quality of the script and the direction of the adaptation.
The movie has been criticized for its casting saying that Kevin Hart and Cate Blanchett do not fit the characters’ personality and looks in the video game. Critics have also debated concerning the age difference of Blanchett and the generally younger Lilith character, but Hart’s comedic background has raised the question concerning his aptness in portraying the more serious Roland.
The adaptation boasts an impressive lineup of talent, each bringing their own unique strengths to their roles:The adaptation boasts an impressive lineup of talent, each bringing their own unique strengths to their roles:
Cate Blanchett as Lilith: This talented actress has won two Academy Awards and is respected for her ability to mesmerise the audience.
Kevin Hart as Roland: A famous comedian of Hollywood who is now going for a more dramatic comedy part
Jack Black as Claptrap: A comedy star to supply the voice for the warm-hearted robot companion
Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Patricia Tannis: Thus, one of the Hollywood legends who has been actively working in the film industry for many years.
Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina: This is a fresh talent that has emerged in the recent big budget movies.
Edgar Ramírez as Atlas: The plot features an exceptional actor who is particularly famous for his intense delivery of dramatic roles.
Florian Munteanu as Krieg: An action star on the ascent who has recently joined the ranks of modern blockbusters
It also means that the project shall feature both, seasoned actors and actresses who are well known in the industry as well as young talents which are yet to make a great breakthrough. Blanchett’s seriousness, Hart’s timing, Black’s low brow humor and Curtis’s experience, coupled with Greenblatt and some other rookies gives prospect for good ensemble.
Some reactions and comments after the first teasers and trailers have been negative with comments like: "This looks terrible", "This is unfunny" which caused the fan base to worry because they have been looking forward to seeing the big screen adaptation of their favorite franchise, even when you look up the movie on IMDB the popularity numbers despite been positive are very low. But all feedback is not negative, there are some positive comments about the film’s portrayal of Claptrap and Psycho Krieg, which indicates that some character adaptations might not be terrible.
Viewers and critics are most concerned with the movie’s comedy element and that's where my skepticism lands too, the Borderlands series is infamous for its crass and frequently tasteless humor, and there is worry that the movie will either fall flat or will attempt to tone down the humor to appeal to the masses, such early reactions stating the film is "unfunny" only adds to such sentiments.
Potential Messages and Themes
The Evolution of Video Games and Their Importance
Some people have come to accept a notion that the film might be subconsciously making a commentary on video game industry’s growth and it’s fight for acceptance as a form of narrative storytelling, while the film may be seen as diluting the mature themes and vulgar jokes of the games, some critics said that it perpetuates the stereotype of the gaming art.
It is for this reason that some viewers may find the film as a critique of Hollywood for softening provocative and dark comic book properties for the masses. This has created debates on culture flattening where even characters and other aspects of media franchises are removed from their individuality to make them much more generic.
Unfortunately, the Borderlands movie stands in a rather uncomfortable position. The production has had many issues from creative differences to casting problems and the fans and critics are always in the dark about what is going to happen. Some expect it to surprise critics and deliver a good film, while others are disappointed.
I doubt the response to the movie can have huge consequences for future video game movies and might affect plans for a larger cinematic universe based on the game, whether it will manage to bridge the gap between hardcore fans and general audiences like me remains to be seen, but one thing is certain, its release is expected to be one of the biggest topics of discussion in not only the video game movie adaptations but the entire movie industry.
In conclusion, I'm not so excited for this movie, sadly Kevin Hart movies lately have not been performing the best, I would say its not him directly since we all know his job is to be as funny as possible and he is although this is probably a lot of weight on him trying to make the audience look at him different than just a man who makes people laugh all the time.
The last episode of House of The Dragon is finally the first time where Rhaenyra could set her foot down by her own merits without the help of Daemon or her Council that really doesn't help so much over all but still Mysaria is part of this Council and it was her input that got Rhaenyra to move forward. Episode 7 is called "The Red Sowing" where we basically watch the call to a lot of Targaryen bastards at Kings Landing and Dragon Stone, with the hope that between all this people Rhaenyra would find those with enough Targaryen blood so they could bond with the dragons that were missing riders, all based on the premise that lords and pure bloods already betray Rhaenyra so why not trying the common folk??, it has always been though that only dragon lords could bond with dragons and that doesn't seem to be true but the problem lays in how loyal this bastards will be? so far in the House of The Dragons we have seen both sides of the coin, John Snow been the most loyal bastard probably ever born and then you have Ramsay Bolton the definition of betrayal so who are this dragon seeds going to be?
Rhaenyra refuses the Black Council meeting to discuss the matter of dragon, She mentions that she is going to get more riders for Vermithor and Silver Wing; during this episode almost everyone abandon her on the idea that other Targaryen even bastards could bond with Dragons and to a point in the episode it look impossible.
The episode core begins with the dragon seeds event which is a term borrowed from the Fire and Blood books. The "Red Sowing" is the term that describes the bloodshed that follows people’s attempts to bond with dragons, after all anytime someone attempts to and fail, this ends up really bad, most cases it seem that the person attempting to bond with the dragon ends up been eaten or roasted. They didn't start easy, then went right to Vermithor who basically start feeding on some of the unsuccessful ones who didn't have what it takes, its not written in paper but it seems that each dragon look for different qualities on their rider.
Rhaenyra and Adam Hull
Rhaenyra meets Adam Hall and Seasmoke the dragon on Driftmark who was her husbands dragon, it is assume that Leynor is dead by now since Seasmoke has been acting up lately but finally decided to look for a rider. Seasmoke was seen with his new rider but Rhaenyra is unsure whether he is on the side of the Team Green, she jumps into her dragon Syrax and go find Seasmoke near Driftmark. This new rider ends up been one of Corlys bastard son, Adam Hull who says he just wants to be Rhaenyra servant and to ride his dragon which is quite noble and fun, but there is more to it. He is actually Corliss’s illegitimate child and both of them are aware of this but have not come out to say it. This concept of secrecy makes the relations between the two characters more suspenseful. Rhaenyra probably thinks that Adam has some Targaryen blood in him, which is not entirely incorrect. The show says that only Targaryens are not the only ones who can ride dragons; anyone with dragon lord blood can, this revelation goes against the conventional wisdom and the reason why the dragon keepers at Dragon Stone didn't want to have any part with the hole dragon seeds situation, they felt it was an insult to their traditions.
Jace has a heated conversation with Rhaenyra, explaining why he's so worried about the dragon seeds. He thought having a dragon was his one way to keep himself in line for the Iron Throne, same as the dragon keepers he felt that either the dragon seeds are not worthy of dragons, only reserve for lords and it would be a direct danger for him in the future as anyone with Targaryen blood could claim a dragon or even worst what if in the future appears that anyone can claim a dragon with or without Targaryen blood??
Episode 7 shows how Kings Landing is upside down after their army came back from the battle of Rook Rest, where they did win after taking down Rook Rest and killing Rhaenys and her dragon Meleys. The aftermath is the current situation where Aemond has turn out to be the ruthless king everyone thought he would be, the small folk turning against them due to starvation and war. Aemond has very little room for tolerance and part of this is how he start to take out Aegon friends from the White Cloaks sending them to the wall charging them with been responsible for not protecting the Queen during a recent riot.
At this pace Aemond is starting to get surrounded by enemy at his own council real quick, it is the example when Larys Strong tells Jasper not to tell Aemond about the dragon and the new Dragon Rider, Seasmoke Rider, mainly because he despises Aemond and wants to get back at him.
Alicent's Despair
We see Alicent in her room and she is struggling with purpose of her life, she has always been the good girl, trying to obey all the rules, but now she feels like she is worthless. Her son Aemond has made her feel that she is of no use to him at all. This existential crisis makes her plan to commit suicide, this is not directly imply but that's what I get from her behavior, that is why she only takes Rickard Thorin, her personal Kingsguard with her to the King’s Wood. It is a very intense scene that helps to show the psychological impact of the political power struggle.
Aegon's Recovery
Cut to Aegon's room and we see him attempting to walk, his recovery is faster in the show than the books from what I could find online, which could be due to the fact that the production wish to involve him in the plot sooner, having bounce back in Viserys similar fashion to at least be able to wear the crown. LarysStrong is a caring character when it comes to Aegon, this is very ironic coming form him, as he tries to lift the man’s morale and speed up his healing so that he can get back to the Iron Throne and deal with Aemond, but Aegon is not brave or strong, he is under a lot of pain and no real need for a fast recovery but Larys Strong is starting to tell him how soon or later he might become a stone on Aemond path meaning his life is in danger thinking that this could motivate Aegon to go full on recovery mode but he still looks very very fucked up.
Daemon has some rather disturbing dreams in Harrenhal and then meets with Oscar Tully and the River Lords, who remember the last visit and laugh, but it is clear that there is tension between them. Daemon is in charge of the meeting and he holds it in the God’s Eye and calls for the old ways and the old gods but at this point none of the River Lords care about him or what he says, they all came because of Oscar Tully, who is young and might not have much experience but is very clever to the point that he force Daemon to behead Williem Blackwood. Talk about betrayal, first Daemon takes of the leach and let Williem loose to cause terror between the River Lords to force them bend the knee and when that doesn't work then he felt against the wall with no other option to kill Williem and get Oscar Tully and the rest of the River Lords on his side.
Rayna and Sheepstealer
Up in the Vale, we meet Rhaena, who has try to stay at the Vale but without a full grown dragon seems impossible, that was the deal. She is now leaving to Pentos with Rhaenyra children, her only hope is Sheepstealer, so she runs to the burnt patch of sheep bones, but the show cuts away, I'm assuming they likely saving her claiming Sheepstealer for the final this next Sunday, that would be a massive closing moment for the season having perfectly setup the stage for all the dragon fights to come.
House of The Dragon, Season 2 had a great balance between episodes, they are not all full of fights but they all had very intense moments with suspense that replace the need of carnage on every episode. Episode 7 has turn out to be one of my favorite episode since he watch a bunch of dragon action, from new riders, dragon snacks and new dragons flight. It is a very interesting episode and it builds up for some major events that are going to happen in the finale. This episode has all that one needs, the dragons, political schemes and the growth of the characters.
¡Hola amigos!
Hello friends! Today I bring you the review of a very peculiar series that premiered a few weeks ago on the Prime Video platform and is based on a book of the same name, My Lady Jane.
This series tells the story of Jane Grey, a young woman with a thirst for knowledge who longs to become a doctor. However, she is not in the best of centuries, her mother has other plans for her. She is about to marry someone she does not know and who does not have such a good reputation, but this is not all, but her beloved cousin and king of England, Edward, is being poisoned to take possession of the throne. In the midst of political intrigues, relatives of dubious loyalty, lies and secrets, and a war about to happen between Truths and Edians (people who can transform into animals), is that this plot full of historical witticism and sarcastic humor with a pinch of fantasy that invites us to rewrite the real history of the time of which these characters were part.
As a person who likes reading and fantasy I feel bad for not having read this story, but no doubt seeing this series made me know it and I hope to fill in the gaps with its original version. Now yes, as a series I found it very good, it has a certain charm that invites you to be attentive to the next events.
It's as if they were telling you a story, it's not something new to hear the voiceovers narrating part of the story, but I found the way of telling it in this series very witty. I found it very funny and fresh to watch, at times it is quite hilarious and absurd. But the truth is that I loved the plot, I was very surprised, it gives an unexpected twist to historical events that occurred.
The acting level I saw was excellent or I don't know if I should call it that, but there were many characters that I felt stood out and I love that. There are very good villains and antagonists, hats off to Mary and Frances, plus little Margareth. Some of them really made themselves hated, but they act so well that I forgive them.
Something else to highlight is the chemistry I felt between the main characters, here Jane and Guildford, it's everything we girls like as they say hahaha. They are kind of enemies at first that are involved by a force majeure, they end up making a deal to divorce when the agreement is fulfilled, but obviously everything can change when they get to know each other and passion wins them.
They were 8 very dynamic chapters, with scenes of humor, action, intrigue and passionate moments. The truth is that I really enjoyed this series, its characters and events, it is a good way to tell a little bit of history and make it fun, although also absurd. Without a doubt it is more than recommended by me. That ending left me craving for more, so I'm sure it will have another season.

The human being, when he is threatened, is capable of doing anything, in order to survive, something that is in his nature, it is inevitable, but that's how the world is, that's how we humans are, when we see ourselves in danger, we seek in every possible way, to survive, a shelter, other people to help us, especially if we don't know what we are facing.
That's what this series is about, The Mist, where the inhabitants of a small town are invaded by a mysterious Mist, which hides terrifying creatures.
This series shows us an emotional event, and that is that this fog is related to the fears of each person, it takes advantage of it, to attack them, and devour them, where people cling to their beliefs, their hope, to survive, while they are trapped.
This series consists of 10 chapters, released in 2017, is entertaining, with its touch of terror, with a hidden mystery, with the facts shown, through this strange sudden fog, all trying to find a justification, through the past, with fact that had already happened, and that years later, is repeated.
A family that struggles to find itself, to survive, in the middle of all this chaos, people with a religious conviction, looking for some sense, to what they are living, and that entails this sudden fog, a struggle between good and evil, to see who is right, where the questions come out, is this a punishment, what led to this event, and why to them?.
Between family dramas, the past of some, here we will see that it is not only the fog, the real enemy, the one that is outside, but also that dark side that everyone has, inside.
It is here where we can analyze a little the behavior of every human being, when he feels threatened, when he is in danger, even the noblest person, can transform, and bring out the worst that he carries inside; and we see this not only on the screens, but in real life, especially those people who have power, believe they own everything, and believe they can manage others at will.
This series reminded me a little of what we are currently living in my country, power blinds you, it transforms you, you cling to it so much that you don't care who you take ahead of you, as long as you stay on your throne, and continue to command.
For those who have not yet seen this series, I recommend it, it is not a masterpiece, but it has its moments, and as I said, it shows in some way, that emotional relationship with fear and the unknown.
It has good performances, each one played their role, in the best possible way, achieving a certain connection between the events they lived, and how they were handling it.
I liked it, I was entertained, I saw this series before everything that happened in my country, and I wanted to share with you this review, thinking a little, how it resembles all this, and well, as they say over there, we must continue, despite everything we are living, we must not lose our focus, we do not know what can happen, and this is my livelihood, for the moment.
Let's go ahead, my beautiful people, with our FAITH on high, and with the best attitude, I read you in the comments.
Synopsis:Tom is a young boy with a normal life, but everything turns upside down after he discovers that he is the main descendant of a lineage of warriors who are based on the signs of the legendary Chinese zodiac.
Asian culture is an immeasurable source of inspiration for the most diverse types of artistic approaches to be made. This project (which has a double production, made by the studios Paramount Animation and Jane Startz Productions) is a very clear example of this. Despite having a simple script, the essence behind the idea is very interesting, and the execution of the project manages to raise the quality a little more than what can be easily constructed on screen.
Chinatown. San Francisco. The plot is set within a context that mixes ancient Asian culture with the frenetic pace of the modern world represented by the American lifestyle. Despite having a construction and development that is too shallow for the narrative weight it presents, the story unfolds in a captivating way, amidst the chaos of events that are played out on the screen without enough time to become convincing.
Tom lives with his grandmother in a “peculiar” house in the eyes of other residents, but there is a reason for that, and he only discovers the real reason for so much “eccentricity” after a traumatic event ends up happening. After he discovers that he has a different human lineage, Tom needs to join the tiger Hu to discover more about his powers as a descendant of warriors whose animal essences are based on the Chinese horoscope.
At the same time that he also meets the other warriors (who can easily change forms without having their true identities revealed, alternating between their human and animal versions), Tom also needs to deal with the dangerous Loo, a villain who is in search of a powerful artifact, which can give her unparalleled power and put her in control of an entire generation around the planet. The battle between good and evil is present again.
The script's major flaw is precisely the reliance on a frenetic pace of adventures to try to infect the public with an execution of elements that mixes technical aspects very well, such as its digital effects and its soundtrack, amidst the lines, shapes and vibrant colors that dominate the screen at all times. However, the lack of a more immersive approach to character development is something that is really missing from the idea.
There is literally no significant time between one action scene and another. In other words, it's as if the movie was releasing adrenaline in practically all of its scenes to prevent the audience from thinking about the plot in its other aspects (which actually end up being more empty things, when in fact, they had a very interesting potential for add something more substantial to the project), bringing really consistent failures.
On the other hand, as I mentioned before, the technical part is actually very fun and functional. The colors, the shapes, the lines, the contrast of ideas across cultures, the soundtrack, the editing of the action scenes (which bring the best moments of the plot), the way in which some scenarios are explored, the striking visual aspect which tends to create an identity of its own for each character... All of this is well applied here, and it works without much effort.
The Tiger's Apprentice works as good entertainment, but it fails to be anything more than that (which ends up being a little disappointing due to the essence of the idea, which could have delivered something much more interesting or even something deeper in cultural matters) and Not even the trio of directors (Raman Hui, Yong Duk Jhun and Paul Watling) managed to align the arguments with assertive executions (which particularly brings even more disappointment).

CRÍTICA DE FILME: “O Aprendiz do Tigre” (2024)

One Fast Move (2024) is the new motor sports drama film specifically bike related something very niche that we don't see every day, I love bikes so might watch when I get the time, expectations of this upcoming film are that it will feature good action full of track motorcycle racing, something not common as most racing movies are street based; and a good dose of family drama. The main character, Wes Neal, a young man with a dark past and a great desire to become a motorcycle racer who just got release from prison and unsure of his role in society, the film shows Wes’ first attempt at achieving his goal by searching for his absent father, Dean Miller.
The film also focuses on the relationship between the two characters revealing the emotional barriers developed during years of separation and unaddressed drama, Wes has his dream of being a professional motorcycle racer and the physical aspect of the sport and the drama that comes with re connecting with his father, enriches the plot that is focused on the father and son, probably to touch upon the issue familiar to many people the lack of trust in a family.
This movie features a good cast, a director with experience and a good story and this makes it a movie that goes for more than just the race sequences. It deals with issues such as forgiveness, determination and the ability to follow one’s dream despite all the adversities.
Lili Reinhart’s co star KJ Apa who is famous for playing Archie Andrews on the television series Riverdale stars as Wes Neal. This character is a big change for Apa as he moves from teen drama series to crime series of a darker nature. His character is a twenty five year old man just released from prison with no obvious way of making a living besides racing motorcycles.
Eric Dane in the role of Dean Miller
Eric Dane plays the character of Dean Miller, who is Wes’s father and the actor adds his experience to the show who at the time have that vibe of an age racer, not exactly knowing Wes is his son but with enough suspicion, Dane is famous for his role in the Grey’s Anatomy and recently in Euphoria the show that has multi shaded antiheroes.
Maia Reficco as Camila
Beautiful newcomer Maia Reficco is Camila, Wes’s girlfriend and source of comfort for him on this story, she comes to the project fresh from her breakout role in Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin. There is not much rather than a couple of teen age drama series so its a similar story to KJ Apa where both are actors who are going to get proven on real movies, this time not for the big screen but hopefully a movie with some good racing action and drama that is not boring.
Edward James Olmos as Abel
Completing the main cast is the famous Hollywood actor Edward James Olmos who plays the role of Abel, the owner of a motorcycle shop and Wes’s tutor. Olmos has been acting for over 40 years and played in such movies as Blade Runner, Miami Vice, and Battlestar Galactica, which gives the movie some weight with his addition, with his appearance is expected to impact the acting of the young talents and enrich the plot of the movie.
Leading this project is the versatile Kelly Blatz who best known for his acting, directing, writing, after a great success with his directional debut Senior Love Triangle (2019) is Blatz’s most recognizable directorial work to date, as well as the most publicized. Not only is he the director but also the screenplay writer, which makes him put together something he has passion in doing and motorcycles which are usually associated with racing.
Before directing the movie, Blatz directed the short movie The Stairs, given that acting is probably one of the key defining factors of his career; this makes him well placed to manage his cast and get them ready for the best performances possible, a professional who has gone through multiple core functions within a production.
Themes and Expectations
Although the film itself is about a high octane motorcycle race, a lot of the critics and the viewers are wondering if there is something more complex than just another racing movie, considering bike movies don't do as well as race cars for some reason, I guess its all about popularity, cars been more universal way of transportation. Here are some of the key themes expected to be addressed:
Family and particularly fathers and sons and effects of parents’ absence
Second chances and redemption
Death, the pursuit of the adrenaline rush, and other related aspects of the human experience
The film is R rated on the basis of which these themes seem to be portrayed in a raw manner; according to the MPAA the reasons given for the rating were some sexual content, drug use, nudity and language. This approach could be better for adults, so it might let the audience better focus on the characters’ problems and the rather rough world of professional racing.
From what has been release and few scenes form the trailer the success of this movie will come down to two things and that's motorcycle racing accuracy and drama, the last one probably been the most important because as I mention its my opinion that bike racing is not something that create such a buzz on movies because of its popularity, its often seen as a dead trap, look how long it has taken F1 to become mainstream.
Themes like family relationship mix with motorcycle racing could take this racing type movie into a different perspective for the audience on the sports drama genre, probably making the audience bond with the drama develop by a charismatic cast having Eric Dane and Edward James doing the heavy lifting while the main characters who are played by more fresh and new actors do all the details, the movie does have potential to perform well, I personally not expecting a hit but at least make it a good one time watch.
I would expect that movies like this go deeper into the drama side, its a popular opinion that racing movies have to be all about action although its where most failed, reason why Fast and Furious franchise always have to go over the top because it lacks drama, it is only interesting because of the stunts they do but you can't keep dopamine high all through a 2hr movie. From what I can get from One Fast Move (2024) is intended to be a story of a man’s quest for self and forgiveness with a touch of family loyalty within the framework of a motorcycle race
Today I'm going to give several series recommendations. Some of them I saw several months ago and had not been able to review them.
Three different genres from three different countries. From 16th century France, through the eighties in Marbella and ending in the kitchen of a British restaurant in the present day.
I saw this series a year ago, I don't remember if I made a post or not, but I didn't think it would be renewed and a week ago the second batch of episodes was released. It has been a pleasant surprise because it looks like a good series. It tells the story of Catherine de Midici, who was the wife of King Henry II of France. We are told about her life from the time she was a child, marries the king and her subsequent rise to power as queen regent. Samantha Morton is fabulous as Queen Catherine, who eats up the screen. The series adds the fourth-wall-breaking device of getting to know the queen's thoughts and has a touch of dark humour that makes it very entertaining.
Also of note is the performance of actress Liv Hill as the young Catherine, her early years and how she managed to bear children for the king. The awakening of innocence and doing whatever it takes to become this Machiavellian woman. I really liked the war between Catherine and Diana Di Poitiers, played by the sensual Ludivine Sagnier. Placid intrigue, politico-religious conflicts, black magic, great soundtrack and black humour make it a highly recommended series. I have already seen the first two episodes of the second season and it maintains its quality.
A Spanish series. I saw it when it premiered in March this year. I was hesitant at first, as I'm not a big fan of the actor Miguel Herrán, but I have to admit that he comes out on top in this leading role. I can bear to see him on screen. Maybe because he complements the rest of the cast. I love Susana Abaitua as an actress, I've seen several of her other works, and Pedro Casablanc is a great actor who favours villain roles.
Set in the 1980s, with the cold war simmering in world politics. Oskar is an ambitious young man who teaches aerobics and fate makes him fall in love with Sara, an attractive rich young woman, whose father Leo Farad runs an arms trafficking network. Oskar will embark on a new adventure in touristy Marbella, entering the dangerous world of arms trafficking. Criminal dealings, politics, war, espionage, romance and a visually appealing setting. A very enjoyable series.
This one is a marvel. I'm glad to see that they made a series out of the excellent film Boiling Point, which I reviewed some time ago. It was a film I loved and with the series they have decided to continue the story, most of the characters from the film return, we see what happened to them, what they did. The sequence shot of the first episode reminds us of all the tension of the film, which was made as a single sequence shot. Now, the series so far, I've seen three episodes, does break away from that to give us a more formal narrative, but with depths to each of the characters.
Stephen Graham returns as Chef Andy, but in a minor role, suffering the consequences of his actions. He is a superb actor and anything he does is to be seen. Now the story focuses on Carly, played fantastically by Vinette Robinson, who is able to convey strength and pain in every service and problem that arises. An upscale restaurant that every night seems to explode with everything that happens. The pacing, the cinematography and the performances of the entire cast make it a gem, just like the film itself. The creators themselves, including Philip Barantini, who is also an actor and has several years of experience in the world of cooking. Look for the film first, eat it and then enjoy this series as dessert.
I recommend them, look for them on your streaming services, then let me know what you think. I hope you like all three.

Synopsis:Wade Wilson has finally left his time as a mercenary behind, but after six years of the events seen in the previous movie, he needs to abandon the quiet life he was leading to bring Deadpool back into action when he is forcibly requested for a new mission. , and needs to join forces with Wolverine.
The Marvel universe seems to have finally returned to its original mold with this new sequel. Don't expect anything new in terms of the script, or even the direction (not even the special effects), because everything here is at a relatively trivial level compared to what was already expected for this type of project. Particularly speaking, hype is the worst weapon here, because after so much marketing around the world, what arrives on the screen is just another movie with an extra dose of adrenaline, jokes designed to reinforce the protagonist's soul and lots of, too much violence.
After many recent failures, this movie represents a breath of fresh air for fans of superhero movies. Not because he presents anything innovative (because that's not even remotely the case here), but because he manages to create a narrative that offers the audience a realistic entertainment possibility, and without any great pretensions of being something he's not. Being faithful to its purpose of entertaining the public, the plot remains within a safe zone, without betting too much on any level of complexity or anything more challenging. Literally, it's pure violence and fun.
Anyone who has watched the previous movie in this franchise knows that everything is boiled down to a well-known formula, and this third part doesn't deviate from that concept at all. What is perhaps very disappointing here is the fact that there is a glimpse into the future of the MCU that does not live up to the expectations of the marketing work that has been done so far. The script even tries to create a new type of multiverse (because there are many special appearances here, this being one of the most interesting things in the plot, although tiring at times due to its excess), but everything is quite futile.
In any case, the guide on how to build a superhero's story focusing entirely on its essence has a very good weight here. Physical and graphic violence (soaked in a lot of blood), jokes (funny or not), breaking the fourth wall (with some creative scenes, and others that border on amateurism) and countless references to other superhero stories set the tone of the movie whole, and that's just what he boils it down to again. If you watch this movie with this perspective, you will certainly not be disappointed. On the other hand, if you want something deeper, you will be disappointed.
In the midst of a fragile plot (which is based solely on the forced - and unexpected - union of Deadpool and Wolverine, who need to work together, meeting the needs of a bureaucratic organization that monitors the timeline, existing outside the limits of time and space), the movie fully benefits from the union of these two characters, who demonstrated a very strong chemistry on screen. While Deadpool remains extremely irreverent, Wolverine works alongside him while maintaining his arrogant essence and this behavioral contrast is quite fun.
Ryan Reynolds managed to “redeem” his own career in the role of the disfigured antihero with suspicious behavior. Obviously, this is not an exceptional performance, but within the scope of his character, this is something he manages to build very well. Hugh Jackman's return in the role of Wolverine was convincing, and with a more mature appearance, the surlier (and natural) side of his character became even more evident. When they share the same scenes, the movie reaches its peak. The rest of the cast is good, but it's just very functional.
Even within a superficial bubble, the script has a narrative that is not very immersive. The great example of this is the villain, who has little screen time and is unable to convey the sense of urgency that should exist in the plot. Emma Corrin did what she could, but her character is really something very shallow. Therefore, the movie relies on the presence of its special appearances to stay afloat, filling its audience with an overwhelming dose of nostalgia, which brings a feeling of “duty accomplished” for being able to please its target audience. There is little substance to the script.
Between correct decisions and blunt mistakes, Deadpool & Wolverine falls a little short of expectations. Even though it fails most of the time due to not being able to consolidate its own plot, the movie still deserves to be recognized by a special part of the public, but it is really an extremely niche product. Shawn Levy remains in the position of a director with a limited vision (even with a script that allows him to go beyond the basics), getting lost in his own construction. Technically, it is a well-made and creative movie, but essentially “forgettable”.

The well known film maker M. Night Shyamalan who has centered some of his work on supernatural themes and plot twist is soon to release his next project, he has produce and direct many great movies and TV Series, my favorite from him been Servants (2019). This new film, Trap (2024) develops during a pop concert that serve as a Trap to caught a serial killer, this movie will have the sort of tense feeling that people have come to associate with Shyamalan. This movie features Josh Hartnett as Cooper, a father who takes his teenage daughter Riley, played by Ariel Donoghue, to watch a rising pop star Lady Raven played by Saleka Shyamalan. Cooper goes for a casual concert only to realize that the show is actually a trap set by the police to capture a dangerous murderer called The Butcher Cooper is the one whom the police are chasing, as revealed in the trailer, making him the main character a villain. The entire situation becomes a kind of cat and mouse game because I think the police knows The Butcher will be at the concert but they have not properly identify him.
Cooper and Riley are excited to attend the Lady Raven concert at the start of the movie, this gives me the impression he is way too confident that he expose himself to public events, it becomes a charged up event to watch the thousands of fans who have come to watch the young singer but this however quickly changes when Cooper gets up to go use the bathroom having the movie take a left turn when it becomes suspicious to him for all the police and security cameras been in the surroundings.
Cooper learns that the whole concert is in fact a police trap operation involving capturing of a criminal known as "The Butcher", the concert area is surrounded by the police and all the exits are closed and any person leaving the area will be subjected to some what questioning I guess since they don't exactly know who the guy is. This generates an instant conflict because Cooper is now aware that he is in a dangerous position, to make things worst he went there willingly and is on a though situation with his daugther invovlve.
It is interesting how on this movie the producer expose the killer right away, its not a guessing game of who is the killer anymore rather a type of escape room situation where the villain has to come up with ideas and tricks one after the other, like someone playing a game and going through levels so he can get out of there potentially with his daughter.
Characters and Cast
Cooper (Josh Hartnett)
Cooper portrayed by Josh Hartnett is a father who has the worst secret that any father would ever have. Hartnett’s recent stage performance in Oppenheimer and other recent television show Black Mirror has refreshed the audience memories on his acting ability, making his choice for such a grey area character quite interesting.
Riley (Ariel Donoghue)
Ariel Donoghue is cast as Riley, a teenager and Cooper’s daughter, some of her previous work includes Wolf Like Me and Blueback. Since the main theme of the thriller is likely to be the father daughter relationship, the incorporation of this aspect will create an emotional plot in the movie, having Cooper to decide what to do with his daughter, probably leaving her behind.
Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan)
Saleka Shyamalan the director’s daughter is also in the movie as Lady Raven, the pop star featured in the concert. She has also provided 14 songs in the film, I think its a nice opportunity she have, most of the audience when they know this might say its because of her father connections but a great opportunity none the less for young talent to show her skills as singer and probably acting too, all depends on her part on the movie.
The idea of a serial killer blending with the society during a popular event such as a concert challenges the theme of identity, I'm sure this happens every day how we might go to a restaurant or a mall and having a high profile criminal next to us without even known about it, but only them and some times not even the person with them really know whats going on deceiving everyone in the room.
The main plot of father and daughter in the story gives a good opportunity to develop themes such as trust, protection and ethical dilemmas of loyalty to family members, which makes me think Cooper eventually leaves her daughter behind, not that its a fact but its my conscience with a spark of malice. The story will be a challenge to a criminal mind and shows to what extent would a parent defend his or her child, especially when Cooper himself puts her child in danger every day with all the killing he is carrying with him.
Production and Direction
Shyamalan’s process for Trap (2024) in fact seem to be related to Servant (2019) and he worked to present a narrative from the villain’s point of view, which resulted in the dark tones reminiscent of Servant (2019), right there in the face of the audience the villain shows up.
Shooting a thriller that took place during the concert had its own difficulties, Shyamalan had to in effect, stage a concert, which was another challenge all together to the whole shooting process, this would make the movie more realistic. Hamilton, Ontario’s FirstOntario Centre was used to shoot the scenes and was painted and renamed as Tanaka Arena for the movie. As mention the songs use on the movie are originally composed by Saleka Shyamalan and the film’s score is performed by Lady Raven and so music is instrumental in setting the mood of the film.
Trap (2024) trailer has received many views, more than 23 million and its been reported that many of the comments are positive since the trailer has that show ambient, powerful, setting up the concept of the movie but without revealing the entire story, all I would expect are stunts and how Cooper will be sleek enough to go through all the police.
I would guess the audience is likely to wonder whether there are more plot twists to the movie than mere discovery of Cooper as the murderer. That fact that the film has been rated PG-13 means that Shyamalan wants to have his cake and eat it, to attract a large audience and at the same time thrill them with suspense, something at which he has been proven to be very good at.
With Shyamalan back to the thriller theme, the novelty of a concert screening and the fact that the movie’s twist is exposed from the start, the audience has been titillated and intrigued as usual. 2024 has been a great year for psychological drama, this is setup to be one of them with the hook right from the start just waiting for all the action and suspense to develop. Whether it will live up to the high expectations set by Shyamalan's earlier works remains to be seen, but one thing is certain as we the audience will be able to watch a movie that is different from the usual ones being produced and will leave them puzzled right till the end. Of course everyone will be trying to guess and figure out whats going to happen next based on assumption, I hope the movie is tricky enough that it does not become too predictable.
A Quiet Place: Day One (2024) is the latest addition to the popular horror franchise that started in 2018, this time taking us back to where it all began, the first day of the alien invasion. The movie is set in New York City and follows a new set of characters as they try to survive the initial chaos, the film is directed by Michael Sarnoski, who takes over from John Krasinski, who directed the first two movies, Krasinski still had a hand in the story and serves as a producer. The movie cast very well balance with Lupita Nyong'o and Joseph Quinn as the lead actors with cameo from Djimon Hounsou who comes back on his role from the second movie, the movie aims to expand the universe of A Quiet Place but I feel it didn't contribute much on the side of tension and horror that made the first two movies so successful, it was kind of a lateral movie rather than setting the bar higher, it's a prequel that doesn't just reproduce what we've seen before but tries to offer a new perspective on the events we have seen in the past but this time with a more human crisis rather than been isolated, set in a big city rather than the quiet countryside of the original films. I personally was hoping that we get to know more about the reason or more about what this Alien came from and if they have any motives behind the invasion, even if humans can't understand them or communicate, as an example when Predator left behind Aliens on Earth so latter on they can come back to hunt them as a sport, that's a motive for existence without having to communicate or a way to learn about the Aliens past. The movie was good on the drama side of things but I really was hoping to get more context about the Aliens themself than just another A Quite Place drama / horror movie.
The movie is built around the main character Sam, a woman with terminal cancer, who is in care house, she agrees to get out of care house for a day trip to Manhattan which happens to be the day of the alien arrival, for having terminal cancer she could still move fast enough but seem the hole situation got to her badly. The movie shows Sam trying to survive in the middle of the alien attack, monsters that she never imagine exist that hunt by sound, latter on she meet a British law student Eric portrayed by Joseph Quinn.
The change of the movie’s scene to New York City from the previous films’ rural areas is a big challenge for the characters especially in a city that never sleeps or knows how to be silent, this time they had to learn. I would only imagine that living in such a busy city that never rest and it is most of the time loud, same happens to human living in it which becomes a problem now that everyone has to remain extremely quiet to avoid getting killed by the herd of Aliens.
The movie does give some more context about the Aliens:
They got no eyes
Use part of their face as it was fingers
They can't smell
Can't swim
Will do anything to hunt their prey even if it means kill themself
Its a wild behavior that reminds me a lot to the Zombies in World War Z.
Characters and Their Journeys
Sam’s character is quite compelling because she is already facing her own mortality when the invasion occurs, basically her least problem are the Aliens, its more about what she wants and at this point in her life is just a slice of Pizza from a place in Queens called Patsys; she is a poet in care house and now she is forced into this world where the only goal is to stay alive, but for her, it goes deeper than that. The Pizza place is not any other place for her, its special since she use to go there with her dad, who is long gone dead, they eat Pizza at Patsys after he play the piano at a Jazz club, this entire obsession with Pizza has a deeper meaning for her during the last days of her life.
Eric is the complete opposite, a British student who finds himself in the middle of this nightmare who has a future in front of him who wants to stay alive, this character gives another point of view, a guy who is not from the city and does not know what is going on, the relationship that develops between Sam and Eric is very important in the movie, it shows the audience how people can become friends in the worst circumstances. They do complement each other as Sam is brave but a bit dry, she keeps Eric on check so he doesn't freak out or start screaming scare to death, same goes around as Eric keeps Sam's moral high, push her to keep going trying to maker her fell well and smile.
I have been loving horror movies on 2024 since they have try to change the horror aspect, leaning more into the suspense side rather than just jump scares, on this movie you only have two characters against a city full of blind aliens so there is not much other than classic scare jump that will keep audience on their toes just waiting for an alien to show up. The movie does focus for the most part on the pandemonium of the initial attack rather than the suspense of living in a world where noise is lethal, it is a more action oriented movie in many aspects, yet it captures the horror element that the series is famous for.
The alien creatures are still a significant danger, yet the movie doesn’t provide much information about them, something I was hoping for but could also mean there is a sequel for the prequel?!, and the characters are encountering these creatures for the first time; the movie is more about how people respond to the existence of such creatures rather than the creatures themselves. This situation makes me wonder if then the only shift was having the same situation but on a big city? for me is kind of a recycle material.
The Performances
Lupita Nyong’o is excellent as Sam, and she gives the character a lot of depth and emotion, making Sam’s fight both physical and spiritual; Nyong’o shines in the last sequence of the movie where she delivers a moving scene that is unique to this film in the series.
Joseph Quinn from Stranger Things demonstrates that he can handle the lead role, the character of Eric develops from a timid student into a hero who is willing to risk his life for others, although some of the character’s traits can be attributed to the script, Quinn makes Eric a sympathetic and believable character.
Djimon Hounsou returns from the second film and has a small but important role, which links the prequel to the rest of the series; Alex Wolff also joins the cast as Reuben, a nurse who looks after Sam and provides another example of the film’s focus on the human side of the story.
The cast in my opinion did very well because none of the performances felt over the top or flat, the problem I have giving this movie a rate say of 8 is that the plot is what felt flat, there is nothing special about it or anything that makes the other two movies special, yes Djimon did create that link between them but does not feel like its enough, honestly this movie feels like when there is a Blue Ray release of a series that never goes to theaters or streaming but still complement the story.
The most attractive part of the crisis is human interaction the ways they support each other in the face of danger; the relationship between Sam and Eric is the focus of this aspect, as it describe how two strangers can become friends and depend on each other when they are in a life threatening situation, even after she demonstrate how harsh she has become when told Reuben "You are a nurse, not my friend" but latter on hug each other when he safes her; this is a more positive portrayal of the human spirit in the face of adversity than is often seen in post apocalyptic films, as the movie implies that even in the face of death, people can be compassionate and forgive in an instant.
Finding Purpose in Chaos
Sam’s journey throughout the movie is to get to a Pizza Place in the city which symbolizes the search for something to live for even, humans tend to do this when we are close to death, in her case she knew she was dying anyways either by the Aliens or Cancer, her struggle with the illness and the aliens shows that even in the face of death there is the need to have something to do and achieve.
The Value of Silence
Although the previous films were more focused on this theme, "Day One" presents an interesting spin on it and demonstrates how a city that is always awake can learn to be still, which is a rather thought provoking concept regarding the world we live in and how people would react if they were suddenly deprived of noise, this time around the movie got to silence an entire city all at once.
"A Quiet Place: Day One (2024)" is a worthy addition to the franchise although I don't feel it lives up to the hype, last night when I sit down to watch it I was expecting more context about the Aliens and rather a bigger fight from humans, either find the Aliens weakness besides not knowing how to swim or even capture one of them to study, something more in the lines of fighting back but I guess it was expected to be this way since on the other two movies people were still living under the same invasion environment.
The movie presents a fresh approach to the alien invasion that changed the world; although the film fails to answer some of the questions I had, and perhaps many viewers, including myself, might have about the creatures’ origin or the world beyond, it presents an entertaining and emotional narrative that can be enjoyed independently, the cast, especially Lupita Nyong’o, raises the bar for a story that goes beyond the usual horror prequel, and the New York setting adds a new spin to the familiar concept, even though this part is not as horror or thriller as the first movie, it compensates for it with the character growth and the study of human behavior in the time of crisis, this film continues to build up the world of the “Quiet Place” and opens the door for more sequels while providing a complete story on its own.
