Insidious is among the popular horror films of the contemporary period, which was able to intrigue film viewers with its mixture of psychological horror and paranormal thriller. It was started in 2011 and since then it has five films and each has a connection with the other to make a big story line. For the audiences who wants to watch the series in the series of the events, it is more appropriate to follow the sequence of the Insidious movies. This order will consider the events in the possible order that they would take place in the timeline of the franchise.

Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)

This iteration takes place three 3 before the events of the first movie of the franchise, Insidious: Chapter 3 is also dedicated to Elise Rainier who is a psychic girl on the verge of breakdown due to the burden of her abilities, the movie follows Elise as she encounters Quinn Brenner, a young lady who is being attacked by the demon. Elise, with her helpers Specs and Tucker helps Quinn and her family try to cope with the demon following them. The second movie in the chronology order with title Insidious: The Last Key focus around Elise and her battle with a demon she encountered while growing up, the story begins with a flashback of the events that occurred in Five Keys a fictional place created for the series to be more specific, it was in New Mexico around 1953 to show the audience the terrible conditions of Elise’s family and the loss of her mother due to the attack of a demon, the movie then jumps to 2010 and sees Elise working as a full time supernatural investigator with Specs and Tucker, same crew that work with the Lamberts on the first iteration of the franchise. The climax of the movie involves a battle between Elise and the demon that has been following her that aim of freeing herself from possession.

Insidious (2011)

This was the first Insidious movie, the audience gets introduce to the Lambert family who do not know how their son Dalton got into a coma or what has happened to him, as the mystery behind the case starts to develop, they find out that Dalton has the capability of astral projection and his spirit is stuck in the Further, same skills his father Josh had when little, still has. This involves the main characters of the film Josh and Renai Lambert who together with the help of Elise try to find out what has happened to Dalton and to save him from the an evil spirit who is also in the Further.

Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)

The sequel to the original film, Insidious: Chapter 2 then proceeds from where the first movie ending with Josh a suspect in the murder of Elise and the Lambert family comprising of Henry, Elizabeth, Dalton, Sarah, and the unborn child return to the scene in an attempt to live a normal life but they are soon horrified to learn that the evil spirit from the Further is not done with the family yet and that the haunting of Josh by the Bride in Black is still ongoing. As with any movie it is the prequel that provides the back story on the Lambert family and the events leading up to the plot of the further movies.

Insidious: The Red Door (2023)

The latest installment in the franchise, Insidious: The Red Door, Dalton is now in college but he discovers that the spirits hunting him on his past still come back for him, this time the movie focuses on the Dalton and Josh, father and son, who with the help of other characters, attempt to capture the LipstickFace Demon in the Further realm and conclude the saga of the Lambert family, taking the audience back to the initial series and gives the characters a degree of resolution.

Watching the Insidious Movies in Event Order

For those who like to sit back, kick back, and watch the movies as they were released then the event order is ideal. This view makes fans feel like they are watching the franchise in the way that was initially envisioned, with one movie progressing to the next.

The Insidious franchise is a testament to the power of horror cinema offering a unique blend of psychological terror and supernatural suspense that has captivated audiences worldwide, probably not the most successful but still standing, not necessarily because they keep making this movies means they are all good but something had click with the audience to keep moving forward. In one of the most unconventional horror movies In a Violent Nature (2024) puts a new spin on the slasher movie staple by telling the story almost entirely from the point of view of the murderer. Originally created and directed by Chris Nash the main plot of the film occurs in the unyielding and distant territory of Northern Ontario situated in the Algoma District near Sault Ste. Marie. This location was opted for after the initial shooting in the Kawartha Lakes vicinity did not succeed in meeting the expected mood. Nash who was a native of Sault Ste. Marie , describe how important was the natural environment, stating that the wilderness is also an actor, it helps create the opaque air of the film, portraying its loneliness.

The movie initiates with a scene that show several young children on a camp, where one of them discovers a ruined watch tower in the woods. The protagonist who is a camper, in the woods they discover a golden locket and a chain around the neck, one of the camper Troy picks it up despite warnings from the other with him,t his action triggers a series of sequence of sequences that turn out horrific. A locket that was missing turns out to be owned by Johnny, a vengeful spirit buried nearby the tower who awakens when the locket is moved. Johnny, portrayed by Ry Barrett, is a hulking, undead figure driven by a singular purpose, to recover his two stolen pieces, his locket, to surprise vengeance upon those who dug up his grave.

The outline of the film’s narrative is based on the slasher stereotype, although the approach takes an original turn, centering around Johnny’s trek through the woods. The campers, such as Kris (Andrea Pavlovic), Colt (Cameron Love), and Aurora (Charlotte Creaghan), are mostly indistinguishable sharing the same bland plot roles to be attacked by Johnny who is presented as a camp fire story narrated by Ehren, and whose father was once a mean shopkeeper who valued gold and riches more than his son’s life; Johnny was harassed and killed by loggers, this is the unhappy background that the young man Johnny cannot stand anything and goes forward with a thirst for vengeance.

The Unique Perspective

There is one aspect to mention on what I was able to find online is that this movie is suppose to talk more about the killer’s backstory, would be a deviation from what is normally expected in slasher movies where the action is satisfactorily extracted from the victims. Telling the story from Johnny’s perspective brings a new twist to the typical sweeper horror movie framework and accentuates the system commonly used, stalking from the killer. This way the camerawork captures Johnny from behind throughout the film, making the film to feel like a chase and putting the viewers into the protagonist’s shoes.

This perspective shift effectively translates into the structure and pacing of the film, unlike many other films of the horror/thriller genre that depend strictly on the number of chase scenes and popular scares like jumps, the film develops tension gradually and naturally as the audience is most of the time next to the killer. It has also been mention that during the movie will be a lack of music to accompany  the horror scenes as are the few audible sounds, those of the night and rustling of the leaves.

The Production Challenges

It was not easy shooting the movie and more specifically, it was very frustrating as most of the scenes had to be re shot, this was due to reasons such as the change in continuity and the need to ensure a proper consistency in tone, established by Nash, the re shoots include replacing the actor who was originally cast as the lead and alterations in the camera package that are suitable to accommodate the rugged environment of a shoot. It was a jungle and a war zone and the many challenges were the problems of filming in the outdoors with lights and sound that are bulky and require setting up for long shots, typical of the film.

Pierce Derks, a cinematographer also has a considerable contribution to this film as he contributed to its unique aesthetics, his strategy was aimed at capturing mostly natural colors of the forest and the night which reflects the darkness within while not using typical exaggerated color effects often seen in horror movies.

The Cast and Characters

The cast of the film is quite strong; the leading actor Ry Barrett was cast as the protagonist named Johnny, he is very popular actor with amazing amount of experience and he usually performs active, monotonous roles in his plays. Realizing Johnny, a murderous and speechless attacker with a psychophysical thrilling performances.

Andrea Pavlovic also acts as one of the campers, Pavlovic is one of the well known personalities of Canada who has bags full of talent in the field of film and television acting. Cameron Love, who portrays himself as Colt, has worked in several television projects popular in Canada.

Some of the rest of the cast are Reece Presley, Liam Leone, Charlotte Creaghan, Lea Rose Sebastianis, Sam Roulston, Alexander Oliver, Timothy Paul McCarthy, and Lauren Marie Taylor. Even each of the actors works in the film adding their performances and the past experiences they found in the movie to the general overall impression of the movie and impact of this particular kind of horror.

The Gore and Violence

The violence on the movie is explicit and the kill tools appropriately macabre starting with the fireman’s axe and a hook blade, it has an R-rating for violence and concerns such as beheading, drowning and member removal. The point of view shift causes the kills to be less like traditional slasher fashion and more serious probably what was missing was the element of surprise which is usually incorporated into the plot through scenes of violence, the audience is presented with calculated and expected violence which is far more terrifying as it makes the viewer feel like he or she is watching a predator waiting for its prey.

Eric (2024) is a six episode upcoming psychological thriller miniseries written created by Abi Morgan, it is a drama TV series focused on the world of 1980’s New York sharing the story of Vincent Sullivan, a famous puppeteer who turns into a desperate man after his son Edgar has gone missing one day. Drama series stars Benedict Cumberbatch and focuses on moral dilemmas, love and hatred, and the unsettling reality hidden behind the suburbs.

Character Dynamics

Vincent’s wife for the most part is also depressing in the series the moment Edgar disappears, she is clearly and massively affected. Honestly this is a series I'm willing to watch now, been that Benedict Cumberbatch plays the main character, many just know him from the MCU but he has a career full of success playing multiple type of characters as he did in The Imitation Game playing Alan Turing, besides having the remarkable Gaby Hoffmann, this is a series set for success with the classic New York 80's vibe this bring back so many memories of that era, that very specific crime / investigation type of series with twisted characters. At first everyone in the audience will most likely think Vincent is the monster with a double personality who did something fatal to his son but when his personality switch back he does not remember, probably having some sort of mental illness or some addiction that flips the on and off switch on his alter ego but the question remains is he really the one to blame?

The dead won't hurt you (2023) is a Western film that sits the audience with its clever story line and deep emotions with Viggo Mortensen who directs, writes, and main actor, the movie shows a 1860's backdrop with prevailing themes such as love, resilience and the struggle for revenge in the American wild west. In a movie, you can't just hire actors; you have to find ones that are multilayered, it's not only famous actors; it's characters that contribute to the movie as well. For instance Mortensen, famous for his multifaceted talents plays the role of Holger Olsen, a Danish immigrant. Vicky Krieps as Vivienne Le Coudy, a French Canadian who is a feisty lady and is always independent minded. The movie starts with the two main characters in San Francisco which Olsen and Vivienne happen to meet, Vivienne whose early engagement to a rich controlling man ended their relationship to then find Holger with quiet power and gentleman, they latter on move to the home of Holger where they try to make a decent life. The serene life is suddenly gone in an instant when Holger joins the Union Army who then departs to the Civil War while Vivienne is left wondering how she will manage to survive in a city where Mayor Rudolph Schiller is corrupt, and Jeffries is a merciless land baron who knows no good. It is the worst when Vivienne is beaten by Weston Jeffries, the son of a jealous psychopath, this critical event puts her into a tough spot in which is enough to break her spirit and independence for a brief moment, question is what will happen once Holger finds out of the recent events, might become a murder seeking for justice, probably taking justice by his own hands.

The Making of the Film

Viggo Mortensen's Vision

One of the plausible reasons for the outstanding success of the movie can be attributed to the fact that in addition to directing and writing Vigo Mortensen also served as a producer and a composer he did almost everything for this production, been his second time directing a movie and the last time he was behind the camera and "Falling" was his first movie as a director. The Dead Don't Hurt got a bunch of talented actors, including Mortensen himself, and a skillful hardworking crew to make the movie a superb as describe by Mortesen himself, its only expected that with him controlling all this aspects, close to perfection was his main target.

Casting and Performances

Mortensen went with casting Vicky Krieps as the lead, they complemented each other so well previously although have not collaborated before this production, from the trailer their screen chemistry seem something you could not deny. Both have to bring up very complex personalities corresponding to the time of the movie, made Vicky a perfect match for getting character like Vivienne. Her performance's point is highly praised and celebrity reviewers often note her deep sung portrayal of a woman who has to face the hardships of the American frontier. The good supporting actors listed also does well, with Garrett Dillahunt, Danny Huston, and Solly McLeod being included in the lineup. Unpredictable circumstances and their own personal growth are their biggest enemies, Vivienne wanting to maker her life with Holger and him wanting to always do the right thing to do even if it means going far away from home. The love story between these characters becomes a representation of the real human experience with all its suffering, heartache, and triumph as characters make difficult choices to protect those they care and love.

Violence and Revenge

The film also deals with the fundamental concept of violence cycle and the result of revenge, specifically once Holger comes home from the Civil War, his quest for retribution against those who harmed Vivienne creates this environment vengeance that the story tries to morally justify, an endless circle of violence and injustice starts to consume Holger a man how left home for saving others ironically to return to the news that his wife has been violent hurt while he was out there risking his life for the benefit of the many, freedom and justice.

The movie showed the people why the Americans were risking their lives and battling the frontier and the new world. The endurance of Vivienne and Holger's characters from outside and often hostile space turn them into a symbol of the migrant path to a new and better life together, this will most likely connect with audiences and made them rethink immigration and cultural identity problem, having the two main character immigrants from far away and from totally different cultures trying to adapt with the locals.

The Dead Don't Hurt (2023) is a Western that brought up a tragic love story with social critique, set in a harsh Western World, I can always like a good drama movie specially develop on places and times that I never saw or live. Directed, written, and one of the main actors Viggo Mortensen, with Vicky Krieps delivering a memorable performance based on the trailer and some of the reviews I was able to find online, the film will make you dive deep into themes of love, justice, gender roles and immigrant experiences, the last probably one of the most harsh during those days, there were many disadvantages to be an outsider. Definitely with less action but similar in some ways makes me think about a very recent TV series Billy The Kid, with similar Western World backdrop and the struggles of those days, probably a movie I would sit and watch with my wife.

The directors of this movie were Matt Bettinelli Olpin and Tyler Gillett under their names Radio Silence Productions which reflects their highly creative style, this movie intention come with highly intriguing horror with a crime and suspense plot and even a bit of black humor coupled with the traditional blood suckers a very commercial side of Vampires.

The story is told in a isolated mansion where a group of criminals who happen to have misguided themselves and latter on kidnapped the innocent daughter of a scary mob boss as a result ending in major trouble. The initial plan kidnap the girl and ask for ransom enough to retire becomes complicated when they realize their kidnapped victim is a centuries old vampire with a personal reason for her abductors to pay, becomes a very unique movie idea for a bloody action thriller that changes things for the audience bringing something different to the table.

Each of the characters in Abigail provides their own unique performance, lending a new style to the movie to what we commonly see on Vampire theme movies. Joey, one of the main characters, the sympathetic medic herself is brought to life by Melissa Barrera while Kristof Lazar is perfectly executed as the evil criminal underworld figure by Matthew Goode but with very little screen time to my taste. The main character of the movie played by Alisha Weir was simply outstanding as a child like vampire with disturbing behavior.

The Genre Bending Brilliance of Abigail

Abigail is such a movie that feels very even and contradictory to many genres in a very pleasant unusual way, the movie appears to have successfully tread familiar grounds in movies with crime thriller themes, horror genres, and dark comedy, but with a broader appeal overall. A Hybrid in film genres turn out to be one of the most attractive features of the movie that takes the audience out of guard probably asking themself what am I watching? and still be intrigue on how things going to end.

Horror and Suspense

But fundamentally Abigail is a horror movie that still make the audience feel afraid to the little monster that Abigail is, including her savage at the same time innocent look from the times her face shape shift. The gothic atmosphere with the creepy house surrounded with fog, narrow corridors with hidden rooms is the perfect combination for the developing horror. It utilizes seemingly overused elements of horror storytelling, the villain vampire and isolated location and yet it does it in a fresh and refreshing manner. The tension is also high from the onset and the segregation of the characters to different parts of the mansion heightens the doubt about what is going to happen next.

Crime and Thriller Elements

The aspect of the film being a crime thriller enhances the story and the characters more too with the kidnapping scenario and appearance of hoods add themes of greed and moral ambiguity to the story, specially greed during the entire script, these are all aspects that extend through the drama and suspense of the movie which the story develops and understand the motivations of individuals and their commitment to surviving. In my opinion the idea of touching on themes like crime and punishment of back lash for the greedy kidnappers takes out from the horror side of the movie, this can thrown off part of the audience that was there to watch a vampire movie with the classic gothic environment from the start.

Dark Comedy

Abigail is a horror film that does not differ from an average blockbuster in terms of the impact on the psyche of the audience, but it also has some moments of black humor which act as a comic relief between scenes. The violent actions and arguments between the criminals, their predicament of been trapped with a Vampire, and the general fear to get jump at any time by Abigail make for fine elements of hilarious humor that elevates the movie tension at the same time been fun, laughing at someone else pain basically, I personally find this very interesting way to keep the audience entertain, a movie for adults only, in real life this is not a good practice but as entertainment medium I believe its ok.

The Cast: A Symphony of Talent

The many major and supporting actors of Abigail have been part of the key for the movie success, each one of them performs their part with different energy and charisma, we got from the kind medic, the all muscle guy, the boss that out smart everyone, the group of characters created brings in different type of personalities from each one but interestingly some of them getting wipe out by Abigail without the expected order or way the audience would expect. There are various aspects about Melissa Barrera’s performance as Joey that makes it outstanding is giving herself the full emotional range during the movie while the other characters having their own agenda but she is the only one trying to show empathy to Abigail, although without knowing her dark side, after all, her character’s transformation from a passive team member in the kidnapping to an aggressive protector of Abigail is intriguing but there are reasons to it latter on reveal during the movie.

It is also worth mentioning the performance of Alisha Weir who plays Abigail, in my opinion her performance was perfect with her constant shape shift physically and emotionally, from kind and innocent to manipulative and business, latter on to aggressive and mostrous effortlessly.

Other notable characters include Dan Stevens, who plays Frank the leader of the criminal team who Kidnapp Abigail and is calling the shots; Kathryn Newton as Sammy; Kevin Durand as Peter the all muscle guy but funny too, each one of them bring in those unique personalities and keep the movie interesting.

Abigail (2024) is an impressive example of an emphatic genre bending and proves the efficiency of movies directed by Radio Silence Productions to mention a few examples Reader or Not and Scream VI. The acting by the entire cast proves to be amazing with the actors and actresses adding great value of drama on the screen as its not easy to keep the audience interested while the movie is develop in a close environment, there is so much focus on the characters that not only the script needs to be on point but each character needs to bring something interesting to the table that makes contrast between each other.

With all its betrayals and secrets, within the group of criminals and within Abigail family itself, this movie is a tale of human nature in many of the sins you can think about making it shine, its a movie that does way more than only to entertain, but also to make a person sit and think and talk about the many aspects of the movie after it has ended making it a great candidate for a serial killer horror film and for the entire genre as well as being a movie that forces a person to think and discuss the characters’ actions, for example it was not clear from the start if Abigail is was like any other Vampire considering child Vampires is not a common thing and even within traditional Vampire movies they are not suppose to turn child into vampires because they become too savage and out of control because their thirst for blood is out of the scale, details for someone who is use to horror movies change everything. At a certain point on the movie it just stops been a horror movie about a Vampire and now takes a drastic change and pivot the story to a gangster murder case of betrayal and survival between assassins, think about this many aspects coming together makes this movie a great watch.

With Nicholas Tomnay’s What You Wish For (2023) literally being a dark thriller and touching upon the themes of desperation, identity and obscene world of fine food service. The movie is about Ryan who has an excess to the talents and a chef who is just struggling in the condition of unpaid gambling debts that is played by Nick Stahl. When he finds his life too difficult to deal with, Ryan leaves for a Latin America Villa, hoping to get some security back with his old school friend and media person, Jack. Jack role is played by Brian Groh, is a famous chef who has certain skill sets to offer a specialized service to rich people, on the contrary, Ryan gradually realizes that the life of Jack is no better than any other man's.

Ryan who is basically ruin and out of luck is shocked when he gets to the villa by the ostentation and by the shattering gap between his and other people's live style, this place looks like a blessing but too good to be true for him. The background acts as a symbol for the powerful but foolish attraction of riches.

When he starts to unfold whats really going on in the background of this paradise, Ryan discovers Imogen, played by Tamsin Topolski, a hardliner from the tech company, she is also Jack's employer. The second character Imogene is a newcomer to the business Tamsin Topolski is one of the fastest growing stars probably the pinnacle of her career was starring in Penny Dreadful, where she embodied Lavinia Putney, a renowned role. Taught by Topolski is how to embody and maybe even become women of strong and multidimensional character, in the 'What You Wish For' film, she incarnates Jack's high-end clientele.

In my opinion this is a worth watching movie for everyone, for most of us there is another life style that we don't know, can't even imagine and its the extreme extravagance as shown during this movie, at least from what we can see on the trailer, everything in life goes in circles, this extreme extravagance and the character who chase it takes him to go through other situations in life to the point of getting suffocated and exhausted by lies he live in, involving him into murder and the most despicable things money can make a person do as he constantly keeps chasing his spot on this ladder in life but it keeps getting farther away.
