There are mixed sentiments about The Last Frontier among critics. For some it is good and others are not so happy. The reason could be the name of Jon Bokenkamp as the co-creator of the show, the famous creator behind The Blacklist.

Naturally everyone has high expections from him after The Blacklist and if he puts before us anything even a little lower than the standard he had set is not good or enough for the audience.

I did enjoy the show, though. Not in the way I liked The Blacklist but, I did.

There are no second opinions that the plot and the story of The Blacklist was so excellently woven that it captured its audiences' attention from the very begining, and it continued to do so for a long time, almost in all of the seasons. The ending of The Blacklist was also satisfactory. I tried but couldn't imagine any other scenario where The Blacklist could have ended.

This isn't the case with The Last Frontier. Show started big, succeeded in capturing a lot of attention of audience but then, in a way, failed to keep up the pace, at least in the middle of the season. Though it was not bad, just felt slow comparing to the tempo they developed at the start. Also, how they ended the finale and gave a hint about a second season to the audience, felt rash and hasty.

Plus points of The Last Frontier are excellent performances, beautifully choreographed action sequences, excellent cinematography and the Alaskan/snowy environment presented in the series is fascinating to say the least. Scenic and atmoshpheric visuals are truly one of the main attractions of the series.

If a story is started with a prison transport plane crash that was full of convicts and inmates then my expectations are several good stories and highly dangerous criminals' clever approach and stunts for their survival and exciting strategies from the officials to capture them. This show has them, not enough though. The length of the season could be the reason. In the past we used to have somewhere 20 to 22 episodes per season.

If you're not expecting an out of the ordinary action thriller then The Last Frontier is a fun to watch piece. Some of the parts are hard to anticipate, these are the exciting parts.

Jon Bokenkamp moves his characters and story like chess pieces, at least, this was what he had done in The Blacklist. He tried to do the same in The Last Frontier and succeeded in some parts of the stories but not that effectively as he was used to. May be he's not good working in partnership and comfortable enough to create a masterpiece like The Blacklist. He is the co-creator of the show along with Richard D'Ovidio (Thirteen Ghosts is one of my favorites). Result of this partnership is good but not something to be called, "Amazing, Marvelous or Top notch."

It is said that The Last Frontier was created by taking the ideas from Con-Air and The Blacklist. Many tv shows and movies have been creating by taking the ideas from the past movies and tv shows. We have no problem with that - as long as inspired idea is executed brilliantly with addition of something new and exciting.

All of the actors have done excellent jobs in performing their roles.

Despite its bad reputation, I still enjoyed a lot of its parts.

I still have high hope from Jon Bokenkamp and would love to watch something amazing created by him in the near future.

Emissary (S01E01 & S01E02)

By the time 1993 arrived, Star Trek: The Next Generation had, by most critical and popular criteria, decisively surpassed the cultural footprint of The Original Series. It had succeeded in many endeavours its predecessor could not, not least launching a successful, long-running spin-off—a feat TOS failed to achieve with the abortive Assignment: Earth backdoor pilot. TNG’s own spin-off, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, would itself run for seven seasons and, for a significant contingent of Trekkies, ultimately become regarded as the finest series in the franchise’s history. Its feature-length premiere, Emissary, therefore carried a monumental burden: to establish a new corner of the Star Trek universe that was both recognisably part of Gene Roddenberry’s vision and boldly distinct from the starship-based adventures of its forebears. In this, it succeeded with remarkable confidence, crafting a pilot that is less a simple introduction and more a profound statement of intent.

The episode’s most masterful stroke is its immediate and unflinching connection to the legacy of The Next Generation. The cold open begins amidst the fiery wreckage of the Battle of Wolf 359, the catastrophic event depicted in TNG’s celebrated two-parter The Best of Both Worlds. The decision not to depict the battle directly was a masterstroke that made the threat palpably real through the horrified aftermath. *Emissary’*takes this a step further, forcing the audience to experience the battle’s visceral, personal cost through the eyes of Lieutenant Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks). As the executive officer of the USS Saratoga, he witnesses the Borg cube—speaking through the assimilated Captain Picard, now Locutus—demand the Federation’s surrender. The Saratoga is destroyed; Sisko escapes with his young son, Jake, but his wife, Jennifer (Felecia M. Bell), perishes. This opening is a brutal, efficient piece of character genesis. In mere minutes, it establishes the foundational trauma that defines Sisko: a man of duty hollowed by grief, whose heroism is born from survival and the grim responsibility of parenthood.

Three years later, Commander Sisko arrives at Deep Space Nine, a battered Cardassian ore-processing station orbiting the recently liberated planet Bajor. Accompanied by his now-teenage son Jake (Cirroc Lofton), his mandate is to help the Bajorans rebuild and steer them towards Federation membership. His reception is icy. His Bajoran first officer, Major Kira Nerys (Nina Visitor), is fiercely resentful, viewing the Federation as just another colonial power to replace the Cardassians. The episode cleverly underscores this tension by having the USS Enterprise-D itself arrive, bringing Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart). The confrontation between Sisko and Picard is one of the pilot’s most electrifying scenes. Sisko’s barely contained hostility, blaming Picard for Jennifer’s death, immediately fractures the image of Starfleet as a monolithic, harmonious entity. It introduces moral ambiguity and personal conflict at the command level, a radical departure from TNG’s more decorous bridge dynamics. Picard, embodying the detached professionalism of his series, nevertheless gives Sisko his orders and leaves him with a key asset: Transporter Chief Miles O’Brien (Colm Meaney), whose transfer provides a tangible link to the Enterprise and a reliable everyman for the new ensemble.

Sisko’s initial attempts to normalise life on the station reveal the series’ grittier, more pragmatic worldview. He is immediately pragmatic about the station’s seedy underbelly, personified by Quark (Armin Shimerman), the Ferengi barkeeper. In a scene that sets the tone for the series’ complex morality, Sisko doesn’t eject Quark; he blackmails him into staying, using the arrest of Quark’s nephew, Nog (Aron Eisenberg), by the station’s mysterious shapeshifting security chief, Odo (René Auberjonois), as leverage. This is not the utopian diplomacy of Picard; it is the realpolitik of a man managing a broken frontier outpost. The crew is rounded out by the eager, somewhat gauche Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) and the serene science officer, Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell), a Trill symbiont host whose centuries of accumulated experience provide wisdom and a immediate, intriguing connection to Sisko.

Sisko’s diplomatic mission is complicated by Bajor’s destabilising political landscape. With the common Cardassian enemy gone, factionalism threatens to consume the planet. Seeking a unifying figure, Sisko visits the spiritual leader, Kai Opaka (Camille Saviola). This moment is pivotal, marking Deep Space Nine’s first major thematic departure from Roddenberry’s secular humanism. Opaka gives Sisko a mysterious “orb,” an artefact she believes was sent by the “Prophets” residing in the Celestial Temple. This introduction of religion as a central, sincere plot force—not an alien misconception to be corrected, but a potent cultural and narrative driver—was a genuinely radical step for the franchise.

The orb’s properties trigger visions of Sisko’s past, leading Dax to theorise its origin lies in the nearby Denorios Belt. Investigating in a runabout—the sturdy, workhorse vessel class that would become a staple of the series—Sisko and Dax discover a stable wormhole. This monumental find, a gateway to the distant Gamma Quadrant 70,000 light-years away, transforms DS9 from a backwater administrative post into the most strategically crucial location in the Alpha Quadrant. Their exploration is interrupted by Gul Dukat (Marc Alaimo), the former Cardassian prefect of Bajor, who arrives to investigate. In the ensuing confrontation, both Sisko’s runabout and Dukat’s ship are pulled into the wormhole. Dax is mysteriously returned to the station, while Sisko finds himself in a realm of non-corporeal beings.

These beings are the Prophets. They exist outside linear time, a concept Sisko must painfully teach them by reliving his memories, particularly the trauma of Wolf 359 and Jennifer’s death. This extended sequence is the philosophical and emotional core of Emissary. It is a therapy session writ across spacetime, where Sisko must process his grief to communicate with the aliens, and in doing so, begins his own healing. He succeeds, is released, and returns towing Dukat’s ship. Meanwhile, the Cardassians, using Dukat’s disappearance as a pretext, attack DS9. The station is damaged but holds, and the Cardassians retreat upon Dukat’s return—a somewhat convenient resolution that feels like a plot contrivance to create tension without lasting consequences.

From a production standpoint, Emissary was a statement of ambition. With a then-astronomical budget of $12 million, $2 million of which was spent on sets, the episode looks spectacular. The station interiors feel vast, grimy, and lived-in, a stark contrast to the sleek Enterprise. The special effects, impressive for 1993, are showcased in the wormhole’s shimmering vortex and, most notably, in Odo’s morphing abilities. The use of early 3D graphics to render his liquid transformations, consciously evocative of the T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgment Day, immediately established the character’s otherworldly nature.

The writers, led by Michael Piller, deliberately used TNG’s own flawed premiere, Encounter at Farpoint, as a structural model. That episode was a necessary, if flawed, first step that performed the crucial, if uneven, task of world-building. Emissary learns from its predecessor’s mistakes. Where Farpoint awkwardly spliced a cosmic trial (Q) with a planetary mystery, ‘Emissary’ integrates its two halves—Sisko’s personal trauma and the geopolitical/religious crisis on Bajor—through the unifying device of the wormhole and the Prophets. The direction by David Carson, who helmed the beloved TNG episode Yesterday’s Enterprise, brings a cinematic gravity and assured pacing that the more scattered Farpoint lacked.

Historically, DS9 was the first Star Trek series not launched by Gene Roddenberry (who had passed away in 1991), and Emissary immediately announces its independence. The most obvious difference is the setting: a stationary outpost, not a starship. This necessitated a fundamental narrative shift. TNG signalled a move away from TOS’s anthology-like structure toward greater continuity. Emissary accelerates this exponentially. A space station cannot fly away from its problems; it must live with them. This mandated a deeper focus on recurring characters, long-term plot arcs, and the consequences of actions—the very pillars upon which DS9’s reputation for sophisticated storytelling was built.

The tone is darker and more realistic. Emissary presents a 24th century with a seedy underside: Quark’s bar hosts gambling, petty crime, and implied prostitution. This is not the sanitised utopia of TNG; it’s a frontier town where ideals are tested daily. The brilliant introduction of Gul Dukat exemplifies this. Marc Alaimo’s performance is a masterpiece of charismatic villainy, presenting Dukat as a complex, narcissistic former ruler who genuinely believes he was a benevolent administrator. He would evolve into the series’ most compelling antagonist.

The episode’s greatest strength, however, is Avery Brooks’s commanding performance as Sisko. While other characters are effectively introduced, they require subsequent episodes to fully develop. Sisko is built complete from the outset: a complex, troubled leader, wrestling with loss but driven by duty. Having Brooks share the screen with Patrick Stewart was an inspired move, visually and thematically accentuating the difference between the two captains and their series. Stewart’s Picard is cerebral, reserved, the philosopher-king. Brooks’s Sisko is visceral, passionate, a builder and a father struggling in the dirt. It is a definitive passing of the torch.

Production was not without its quirks. The original prosthetic makeup for Jadzia Dax was discarded because Terry Farrell was deemed “too beautiful” for it; makeup artist Michael Westmore instead created the elegant, iconic Trill spots. The episode also introduced the versatile runabout class to Trek lore and featured a title theme by Dennis McCarthy that would win an Emmy.

If Emissary has a significant flaw, it is the aforementioned Cardassian attack subplot. It functions as generic action padding, damaging the station just enough for Bashir to heroically patch people up, but not enough to create any lasting stakes or fatalities. This plot convenience feels imported from a more conventional Trek episode and clashes with the pilot’s otherwise grounded emphasis on realism and consequence.

Emissary is a triumphant opening. It achieved the delicate, near-impossible task of firmly anchoring itself within the broader Star Trek universe—through its direct lineage from Wolf 359 and the presence of Picard and O’Brien—while simultaneously and decisively carving its own path. It established a richer, darker, more morally ambiguous world, centred on a uniquely compelling protagonist. It embraced serialisation, political intrigue, and spiritual themes that Roddenberry might have shied away from. While not without minor imperfections, it laid a foundation so strong that it enabled Deep Space Nine to evolve into the most nuanced and dramatically satisfying chapter of the Star Trek saga.

Some classic works of science fiction literature have all the luck when it comes to screen adaptation. The most telling example is Frank Herbert’s Dune, which, across decades, has received three very different, yet interesting and mostly successful interpretations, each finding its own audience and critical regard. It is quite another matter for Riverworld, the cycle of five novels by Hugo Award-winning author Philip José Farmer. Its fascinating premise—all of humanity resurrected along the banks of a seemingly endless river—would, on paper, allow for immense flexibility and creative exploration for any film or television auteur. Yet this potential has, thus far, led only to two underwhelming attempts, both produced by the Sci-Fi Channel. The first of these, the 2003 television film directed by Kari Skogland, stands as a particularly frustrating case study in how to squander a brilliant concept through a combination of timid writing, generic characterisation, and a fundamental misunderstanding of the source material’s appeal.

The plot, as presented, begins in the then-future of 2009. American astronaut Jeff Hale (played by Brad Johnson) dies when his space shuttle is struck by debris from a meteor shower. He awakens in a strange jade-green bubble submerged in water, is assaulted by a mysterious figure that floods his mind with visions, and then emerges, naked, to swim to the riverbank. Here, he, like countless others, finds mysterious containers—‘grails’—providing clothes and basic necessities. He quickly learns that every person on this world has been resurrected at their physical prime from different eras of Earth’s history. Hale’s initial group includes the Englishwoman Alice Liddell (Emily Lloyd), who died in 1934; Mali (Karen Holness), an African woman taken by slavers; Lev Ruach (Jeremy Birchall), a Jewish victim of Auschwitz; and the Roman Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus (Jonathan Cake). Two more unusual figures join them: a young mute girl named Gwenafra (Nikita Hearsley) and an extraterrestrial, Monat (Brian Moore), who reveals that Earth and all humanity were destroyed in 2039. The narrative soon introduces a further layer: some were resurrected years earlier and have built empires. Hale’s group is captured by one such warlord, Valdemar (Kevin Smith), leader of the Vandals, who enslaves them. After a daring escape, Hale finds a community of fugitives led by Samuel Clemens (Cameron Daddo), who has built a riverboat, the Go For Broke, with the aim of exploring this strange world. The central conflict crystallises when Ahenobarbus usurps Valdemar’s empire and reveals himself to be the Roman Emperor Nero, setting up a generic struggle between Hale’s idealism and Nero’s tyranny.

Stuart Hazeldine’s script is very loosely based on motifs from the first two novels, To Your Scattered Bodies Go and The Fabulous Riverboat. This ‘looseness’ is the adaptation’s primary flaw. Riverworld’s premise offers enormous potential for rich, philosophical ‘what-if’ scenarios, featuring interactions between historical celebrities and ordinary people from vastly different epochs. The 2003 film discards this almost entirely. Most egregiously, it replaces the novels’ iconic protagonist, the brilliant, complex, and historically real explorer Sir Richard Francis Burton, with the invented Jeff Hale, a generic American astronaut played by Brad Johnson, a former model and ‘Marlboro Man’. This substitution immediately lowers the intellectual stakes, trading Burton’s linguistic genius, cultural curiosity, and volcanic temperament for a bland, all-action hero whose most defining characteristic is his profession. It is a clear bid for a conventional, easily marketable lead, but it strips the story of its unique historical texture and psychological depth.

This reductionism extends to the other historical figures the script bothers to include. Only Samuel Clemens is readily identifiable, and even he is reduced to a plot device—the man with the boat. Jonathan Cake’s Nero is wrecked by uninspired dialogue that plays directly into Hollywood’s quasi-historical clichés of decadent, sneering villainy, offering no fresh insight into the infamous emperor. Alice Liddell, the real-life muse for Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, is so poorly written that a viewer without prior knowledge would struggle to discern her identity or narrative significance. Emily Lloyd brings a fragile, period-appropriate dignity to the role, a poignant performance given that her promising career was soon sidelined by well-documented struggles with mental health. The film also marks a tragic footnote: the role of Valdemar was the last for Kevin Smith, the New Zealand actor beloved as Ares in Xena: Warrior Princess, who died shortly after filming in an accident in China.

On a technical level, Canadian director Kari Skogland does a relatively decent job with the material provided. The Sci-Fi Channel evidently supplied a sufficient budget for early-21st-century television CGI. The alien world is rendered effectively, with the mysterious grail stations and strange devices providing just enough visual intrigue to distinguish the setting from a generic post-apocalyptic wasteland. However, the production design often betrays its television roots and budget. Many of the costumes, props, and sets for the Vandal sequences look suspiciously like recycled stock from Xena or Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, lending a cheap, familiar feel to what should be utterly alien. The character of Monat suffers most; his alien make-up appears decidedly artificial and rubbery, disrupting immersion whenever he appears.

The film is arguably at its most compelling in its opening act, which captures a genuine sense of existential mystery and visceral confusion. The scenes of hundreds of naked, disoriented people stumbling from the river have a raw, unsettling power. This promising atmosphere of profound dislocation, however, is never resolved or meaningfully explored. The mystery of the ‘Ethicals’—the beings behind the resurrection—is pushed to the background in favour of a predictable, pedestrian power struggle between Hale and Nero.

Like so many television pilots of its era, Riverworld concludes with a cliffhanger twist (involving the true nature of the river) that, due to the film’s failure to generate a series, leaves the audience with an annoyingly unresolved narrative. This failure can be attributed to several factors, not least a profound misjudgement in timing. The opening scene depicting a space shuttle disaster, filmed in 2001, aired in 2003, mere months after the very real destruction of the Space Shuttle Columbia. The unfortunate resonance likely made the opening jarring and tasteless for many viewers, creating an immediate barrier to engagement.

The 2003 Riverworld is a profound disappointment. It takes one of science fiction’s most audacious and philosophically fertile premises and reduces it to the level of a passable, but utterly generic, Saturday-night telefantasy adventure. It prioritises safe, archetypal conflict over the source material’s challenging intellectual curiosity, and replaces rich historical figures with bland ciphers. It demonstrates competent, if unremarkable, craft but lacks the courage to be truly strange or thought-provoking. That the Sci-Fi Channel felt compelled to reboot the project just seven years later with a new mini-series speaks volumes about this adaptation’s perceived shortcomings.

It was way back in 2023 when Prime Video released the first season of the spy thriller drama, Citadel. To me, it was a mixture of both James Bond vibes and 24 hours. Although the story was a bit over-stretched with the concept of mind control through chips and the idea of a superhuman soldier, who has been programmed to kill. Due to the long wait until the release of the second season in 2026, the series introduced a brief intro to get fans up to date on what had happened. It was a well-done concept, and the icing on the cake was the voice of Stanley Tucci, who has a very good voice. The well-articulated kind, and you can hear him speak clearly.

Right from the second season, one could tell that there is a huge difference, and I am not just talking about the introduction of new characters; I am talking about the direction of the story. It was more detailed this time around, with each episode packed with action. In the first season of the series, it was about an introduction into the various spy organizations and the development of the characters, especially Richard Madden playing Mason Kane and Priyanka Chopra playing Nadia Sinh. They both played the lead role in the series, especially in the first season, which was focused on both of them recovering their memories and coming to terms with what they had done. This is where the difference becomes clear. In the second season, there is a common enemy, and that is Mr Braga, who is on a mission to make a killing machine in the form of an assassin. This puts the series in a whole new limelight because the villain character, Mr Braga, is some annoying piece of work.

Also, I have to share some light on the fact that this is the first action movie I am watching with Priyanka Chopra in it. I know she has been in a couple of other action movies like Bluff, which is also on Prime Video, but I have not watched it. If I were to rate her performance, it would be an outstanding 9 out of 10, not because she is gorgeous, but because she can act. I was surprised by her body movement in the fight scene and the use of weapons. She was on point, and honestly, the main reason I kept watching. You know that aspect where a series hangs on the presence of a specific actor, well, I think this was the case for the series for me. Priyanka kept it going with her acting and the cold shoulder look she gave to Mason Kane when she found out he was the reason why they found themselves in the mess that they found themselves in. It is not easy to look at the person you love as the person who is also responsible for your problem.

With the prime acting from her, I could hold off with the series down to the end of the second season. Also, there is some comic relief with the introduction of new characters like Jack Reynor and Gabriel Leone to keep the series going in its new direction. I sincerely hope we get a third season; either way, I have prepared my mind for the next 3 years.

Mockingbird (S4x07)

By its fourth season, Game of Thrones had firmly established a reliable, if increasingly predictable, formula for its “regular” episodes. These instalments function as narrative chessboards, methodically moving multiple storylines into position ahead of the grand finale or mid-season event. They are typically characterised by a sprawl of subplots, various excuses for graphic and often exploitative content, and a final scene engineered to deliver a memorable ‘wham’ moment—a cliffhanger or shock that may or may not carry significant weight in the grand scheme. Mockingbird, the seventh episode of Season 4, is a quintessential and expertly executed example of this formula. It ticks every box with ruthless efficiency, delivering solid entertainment while also highlighting the show’s growing reliance on sensationalism and structural convenience.

The episode’s least consequential thread follows the continuing travels of the Hound and Arya Stark. Their dynamic remains a highlight, a grimy road movie within the fantasy epic, but here it serves primarily as narrative marking time. The brief encounter with a group of brigands allows Arya to showcase her growing proficiency with Needle, a satisfying but ultimately minor character beat that does little to advance her overarching quest. It is functional, but feels like an obligation to a popular duo. Slightly more consequential is the journey of Brienne of Tarth and Podrick Payne. Their arrival at the Inn at the Crossroads and meeting with the sympathetic Hotpie provides a rare moment of warmth and a tangible connection to the Stark saga, as Hotpie speaks of his friend Arya. It is a well-acted scene that grounds Brienne’s often-abstract mission in human terms, yet its primary function is to reposition the characters geographically and emotionally for future conflicts.

Elsewhere, the chess pieces are shifted with similar purpose. At Dragonstone, Melisandre’s chillingly frank conversation with Queen Selyse—conducted while the Red Woman bathes in what is arguably the series’ longest sustained scene of nudity to that point—serves to ominously ensnare Shireen in her father’s doomed campaign. The scene’s exploitative element is nakedly apparent (pun intended), using the Carice Van Houten’s body as a backdrop for prophetic menace. At the Wall, Jon Snow argues strategy with the stubborn Ser Alliser Thorne, proposing the desperate measure of sealing the tunnel against Mance Rayder’s host. This is pure tactical table-setting, a necessary debate to establish the stakes for the impending battle, but it lacks the dramatic heft of the season’s better material.

In Meereen, the narrative takes a turn towards the crudely sensational. Daenerys, already impressed by Daario Naharis’s martial flamboyance, decides to test his skills in the bedroom. The subsequent scene is less about character development than about providing a titillating interlude and making Ser Jorah Mormont squirm with jealous discomfort. Jorah’s subsequent advice—to send the flashy Daario to Yunkai as a blunt instrument while dispatching Hizdahr zo Loraq for diplomacy—feels like a plot contrivance designed to get the fan-favourite sellsword into the field rather than a nuanced political decision. It is efficient storytelling, but rings hollow.

The episode’s centre of gravity, and its undeniable strength, lies in the Black Cells of King’s Landing. Tyrion Lannister, having chosen trial by combat, faces certain death after Cersei names Ser Gregor Clegane as her champion. The series of conversations that follow are masterclasses in writing and performance. Peter Dinklage portrays Tyrion’s crumbling hope with devastating subtlety as he is rejected first by Jaime—who cannot fight due to his maiming—and then by Bronn, who is bribed with a noble bride and lands. Bronn’s refusal is a brutal lesson in the show’s core ethos: loyalty has a price. The salvation that arrives in the form of Prince Oberyn Martell, who wants opportunity to avenge his sister by killing Mountain, is therefore electrifying. Pedro Pascal imbues Oberyn with a lethal, vengeful charisma. This storyline is handled with a moral and emotional complexity that the side plots lack.

The rest of the episode, directed with slick competence by Alik Sakharov, delivers the required quotient of exploitation. This is most blatant in the gratuitous scene of the Mountain—now played by Icelandic strongman Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson—practising for his duel by butchering prisoners in a geyser of blood and flying entrails. The violence is extreme, graphic, and largely unnecessary beyond establishing the champion’s monstrousness, a box the show had already ticked numerous times. It exists for shock and visceral thrill, a hallmark of the series’ formula.

Sakharov’s skill finds a more fitting outlet in the melodramatic, blackly humorous climax at the Eyrie. After being harassed by her unstable cousin Robin, Sansa is comforted by Petyr Baelish, whose calculating kiss is witnessed by the insanely jealous Lysa. The subsequent confrontation at the Moon Door is high Gothic theatre, with Lysa’s hysterical threats yielding to Petyr’s cold, manipulative calm. His sudden murder of his wife—pushing her through the very door she threatened Sansa with—provides a perfectly convenient, karmic cliffhanger. It is a memorable, satisfying moment of villainy punishing villainy, a trend in Season 4 that offered audiences clear, brutal payoffs. As a ‘wham’ moment, it succeeds brilliantly, even as it underscores the episode’s place within a now-mechanistic seasonal structure.

Mockingbird is a very good, economical episode of television. Written by showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, it juggles its myriad subplots with assuredness, and its central Tyrion-Oberyn sequence is among the season’s best. Yet, it also stands as a clear artifact of Game of Thrones in its middle period: a polished, compelling, but somewhat cynical piece of genre engineering, where character moments compete for screen time with nudity and ultraviolence, all building to a neatly orchestrated, if manipulative, final punch.

Released in 1974 and directed by Roman Polanski, Chinatown is often mentioned among the best films ever made, and that reputation is absolutely deserved. It takes the detective noir formula and turns it into something darker, smarter, and far more unsettling than most films in the genre. This is not just a mystery. It is a story about power, corruption, and how truth does not always lead to justice.

Jack Nicholson stars as private investigator J.J. “Jake” Gittes, and it is one of the best performances of his career. Nicholson gives Gittes confidence, charm, and just enough arrogance to make him feel real. He is sharp and observant, but he is not invincible. That vulnerability is what makes the character so strong.

The story begins with what seems like a simple adultery case involving Hollis Mulwray, the chief engineer of Los Angeles’ water department. But once Mulwray turns up dead, Jake finds himself pulled into a much larger conspiracy involving land deals, corruption, and some of the darkest secrets hiding beneath the city’s polished surface.

Faye Dunaway plays Evelyn Mulwray, and her performance is one of the emotional anchors of the film. She brings mystery and fragility to the role without ever feeling weak. Evelyn is far more complicated than she first appears, and Dunaway handles that complexity perfectly.

Then there is John Huston as Noah Cross, one of the most quietly terrifying villains in film history. Huston does not play him as a loud monster. He is calm, wealthy, and completely certain of his own power. That confidence makes him far more disturbing.

Robert Towne’s screenplay is legendary for a reason. The writing is precise, layered, and patient. Every conversation matters. Every clue builds naturally. The film respects the audience enough to let the mystery unfold instead of overexplaining everything.

Polanski directs with incredible control. He keeps the tension building slowly, allowing the audience to discover the truth alongside Jake. There are no wasted scenes. Even quiet moments feel loaded with danger because you know something is wrong beneath the surface.

Visually, the film is stunning. It captures 1930s Los Angeles with a sunlit beauty that contrasts perfectly with the darkness of the story. This is noir in bright daylight, which somehow makes it feel even more unsettling. Evil is not hiding in the shadows. It is standing in plain sight.

Jerry Goldsmith’s score also deserves praise, especially considering how quickly it was created. The haunting trumpet theme gives the film a sadness that lingers long after scenes end. It helps make the entire story feel tragic rather than simply suspenseful.

What makes Chinatown such an excellent film is that the mystery itself is only part of the experience. The deeper story is about systems of power and how ordinary people are often crushed by forces much bigger than themselves. Jake can solve pieces of the puzzle, but he cannot fix the world.

The famous ending is one of the best and bleakest in film history. It refuses the easy comfort of justice or clean resolution. Instead, it leaves you with the brutal reality that sometimes the people with power simply win. That honesty is what makes it unforgettable.

Unlike many detective stories where the hero uncovers the truth and saves the day, Chinatown understands that knowledge does not always equal victory. Sometimes understanding what happened only makes the tragedy worse.

Over time, the film has only grown stronger in reputation because its themes remain timeless. Corruption, greed, abuse of power—none of that feels locked to the 1930s setting. It feels just as relevant now.

In the end, Chinatown is an excellent film because it combines brilliant performances, flawless writing, and one of the strongest endings ever put on screen. It is smart, haunting, and deeply uncomfortable in the best way. It is not just a great detective movie. It is one of the greatest films ever made, period.

The Laws of Gods and Men (S4x06)

Game of Thrones stands as the best-known and arguably the most popular fantasy series in the history of television, but throughout its run, it has consistently toyed with other, more generic genres – from action and adventure to horror, romance, and, as HBO’s mandate often ensured, erotic thriller. In its fourth season, the series added another genre to its repertoire with The Laws of Gods and Men, which deftly incorporates the mechanics of a courtroom drama into its medieval political tapestry. In doing so, the episode delivers one of the most emotionally devastating and memorable moments of the entire series, a climax that would come to define the season. This structural gambit, written by Bryan Cogman – the semi-official keeper of the series ‘bible’ – maintains the show’s signature format of interweaving disparate storylines across its vast geography. What makes this instalment particularly interesting is that, for the first time, two of these storylines are set in the eastern continent of Essos, expanding the show’s scope while testing its narrative cohesion.

The first of these Essosi threads is set in Meereen, where Daenerys Targaryen, having conquered the city, sits in the Grand Pyramid to hear supplicants. This sequence serves as a pointed depictions of the burdens of rule, ranging from a goatherd demanding compensation for his flock, torched by one of Daenerys’s growing dragons, to the more nuanced plea from Hizdahr zo Loraq (Joel Fry). Hizdahr, the son of a former slave master crucified by Daenerys’s order as retribution for the previous crucifixion of slaves, claims his father opposed that brutality and asks for his body to be given a proper burial. Daenerys’s reluctant agreement here is a small but significant moment, highlighting her struggle to transition from liberator to governor, a theme that would come to dominate her arc. The scene is bookended by impressive visual effects, as the episode’s budget is flaunted in a striking shot of a large dragon immolating goats – a spectacle that, while thrilling, underscores the unintended consequences of her power.

The second Essos storyline takes place in Braavos, where Stannis Baratheon, accompanied by his loyal Hand Davos Seaworth, arrives to personally plead for a loan from the Iron Bank. The representative, Tycho Nestoris (Mark Gatiss), is initially dismissive, noting Stannis’s lack of men and resources to continue his war. It is Davos, with his characteristic blunt honesty, who salvages the situation. He successfully argues that the Bank putting all its support behind the Lannisters is a risky investment, given Tywin’s advanced age and the instability likely to follow his death. This subplot is elevated by another lavish CGI set-piece: Stannis’s ship entering Braavos harbour by sailing beneath the monumental statue of the Titan, a direct homage to the Colossus of Rhodes that visually reinforces the city’s grandeur and the show’s production ambitions.

Back in Westeros, the episode delivers its most contentious original addition: Yara Greyjoy’s raid on the Dreadfort. With a small band of Ironborn, she manages, against all odds, to penetrate Ramsay Bolton’s stronghold in a bid to free her brother, Theon. The scene’s primary function is to illustrate, in the clearest possible terms, how profoundly broken Theon has become. When Yara finds him, he is so mentally shattered and convinced her rescue is another of Ramsay’s cruel tricks that he calls himself ‘Reek’ and refuses to leave. Forced to retreat as Ramsay arrives, Yara later tells her men that Theon is ‘dead’. The sequence is undeniably melodramatic and serves as convenient fan service, providing the requisite sex scene with Ramsay and Myranda, and later showcasing a shirtless Ramsay dispatching two fully armoured Ironborn – a moment that stretches plausibility and highlights the scene’s logistical weaknesses. The idea of a single Ironborn ship travelling across the world for a mission that fails at the last minute feels more like a contrived plot device than organic storytelling, a rare misstep in an otherwise tightly constructed episode.

Of course, the episode’s centrepiece and undeniable triumph is the trial of Tyrion Lannister in King’s Landing. From the outset, it is a show trial with a preordained outcome, a parade of witnesses – including a devastating turn by Shae – testifying against him. Knowing his brother will be found guilty and executed, Jaime brokers a desperate deal with Tywin: he will leave the Kingsguard and assume his role as heir to Casterly Rock, in exchange for Tyrion’s life being spared and him being sent to the Night’s Watch. Tyrion, deeply sceptical and acutely aware of how similar arrangements ended for Ned Stark, is cornered. The trial scene, however, transforms from a judicial farce into a searing character study. When Shae takes the stand and betrays him, Tyrion’s last romantic illusion is brutally shattered. Consumed by a lifetime of bitterness and this final, most hurtful personal betrayal, he unleashes a defiant, volcanic tirade against his accusers, culminating in his demand for a trial by combat.

This sequence is exceptional television. Although it ends on a melodramatic cliffhanger to be resolved later, it features a devastating twist that, in light of the series’ darkly cynical depiction of the human condition, feels utterly believable. It also feature brilliant acting performance by Peter Dinklage. Playing a character stripped of all his defences and faced with ultimate betrayal, Dinklage delivers what is arguably one of the strongest performances in the entire series. His monologue is a raw, cathartic release of years of pent-up resentment, and it elevates the episode from great to unforgettable. Critics universally acclaimed this scene, with many highlighting Dinklage’s performance as the highlight.

The Laws of Gods and Men is a fascinating hybrid. It showcases the series’ ambition and budget with its impressive set-pieces in Essos, and it delivers a landmark character moment in King’s Landing that remains a high-water mark for the show. However, it is not without its flaws. The Dreadfort rescue subplot, while effective in illustrating Theon’s degradation, feels like a contrived, non-canonical addition that prioritises melodrama and fan service over narrative plausibility. Yet, these shortcomings are ultimately overshadowed by the sheer power of its concluding act. By successfully grafting a courtroom drama onto its fantasy foundation, the episode proves that Game of Thrones was at its best when leveraging genre conventions to deepen its character portraits, resulting in a chapter that is both structurally innovative and emotionally ruinous.
