There’s something about the right moment that isn’t talked about enough. Like, a particular dish coming out, or a particular song, and it becomes a trend, and you don’t try any of it, yet, but when you do, it feels like the most perfect time to have tried it.

Now, in this case, it’s a movie, and since about March, I heard about this movie, especially with all the claims that it’s a masterpiece. I have a long list of blockbusters that came out this year, which I haven’t seen, and promised to see, but I’ve not been able to get around to seeing any of them. Till Adolescence.

Adolescence (2025)

This mini series written by Englishmen Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, and directed by Philip Barintini, tells the story of 13 year old, Jamie Miller, a student who is arrested on charges of murder. The four episodes do not necessarily dwell on the detective side of things, since that isn’t the main aim of the story, but it analyzes the reasons and thought process behind the actions committed by teenagers in modern society.

Thoughts and Rating

This series was jarring, from the first episode, all the way to the last. It began with a bang, and like none I’ve ever seen, sustained the intensity all the way till the end. I felt every emotion deeply, and for the life of me, I didn’t think I’d bawl this hard in any movie this year.

From the cinematic point of view, this series is a banger. It delivers from a one-shot perspective, which means that there are no cuts or edits, and each episode just runs from beginning to the end without interruption. I didn’t know how they managed that, but they did, and it was exceptional. It was particularly scintillating in the first episode with how it cut through the different casts and scenes in a way that showcased true cinematic mastery.

I guess I may not feel as much as a parent of teenagers watching this did, because this series is a punch to the gut by all means, and emotionally jarring, as well. But I did feel deeply about just how gruesome the effect of social media is on the impressionable minds of young teenagers. I never knew about the concept of ‘incel.’ I never knew so many things. But this movie opened doors to my mind, and I hope its teachings stay with me till I have kids of my own.

This may not be worthy of note, but I particular loved the accents. It crystallized the entire movie experience for me. I kept thinking to myself, surely they’re not always this polite, even with cussing. Surely an accent couldn’t be this beautiful that you feel each line this excruciatingly. I loved every moment.

I just realized that I didn’t talk about the acting. The cast that played Jamie Miller and Eddie Miller outdid themselves. Such finesse in role interpretation! Such beyond realistic delivery! It’s such a let down when you realize that you’re watching a movie because the actors are revealing that through subpar acting, but you see when actors embody their roles so superbly that you feel every emotion to your soul because of the depth of acting? It’s sublime. If I saw them—the cast, that is— I’d give a deep bow. They deserve their flowers. Every one of them.

This series is complex beyond words, and I realize now that there’s no way I can tell the way I felt with mere words. Each episode was a message. From the arrest to the school visit, to the episode with the psychologist, and finally, with Jamie’s family. I got the message loud and clear. I cried hard, but my goodness, I got the message. If the world were any fair, this series and its actors would get all the awards possible. For the life of me, this is the least of what they deserve for a movie like this.

I’m beyond humbled to have been a part of this movie by way of simply spectating, and I’m glad Netflix still has it in them to showcase true masterpiece. From the harrows and complexities of teenagehood to the saddening realization that a parent may not ever truly know their own child. If you’ve not seen Adolescence, please do. I can, with all boldness, say that it is the best thing since sliced bread. Maybe I would have liked to seen the true end with Jamie, but I wouldn’t change a thing, regardless. 10/10 across boards!

While it is not uncommon for films and television series to experiment with alternative endings—offering audiences divergent conclusions or extended epilogues—it remains considerably rarer for such works to reimagine their beginnings. The American crime drama The Shield boldly toyed with this intriguing narrative concept through its Season 2 episode Co-Pilot, which effectively functions as an alternative genesis to Vic Mackey's morally complex saga. This aptly titled instalment serves as a prequel, providing the origin story of the notorious Strike Team and recontextualising everything viewers thought they knew about the Farmington Division's most infamous unit. By rewinding the clock fourteen months before the events of previous episodes—or roughly two months prior to the pilot episode that first introduced audiences to Vic Mackey's compromised world—'Co-Pilot' attempts the ambitious task of retroactively constructing a foundation for the corruption that would eventually consume the Barn.

The episode opens with the newly established Farmington Precinct in its nascent stages, where freshly appointed Captain David Aceveda and his officers are still acclimatising to their unfamiliar surroundings. Vic Mackey, at this juncture still a conventional LAPD detective rather than the feared Strike Team leader, harbours ambitious plans alongside his loyal partner Shane Vendrell. They eagerly anticipate heading the newly conceived anti-gang unit designed to combat the area's escalating criminal activity. However, Vic must first navigate the bureaucratic labyrinth to secure Assistant Chief Gilroy's full backing, a political manoeuvre requiring considerable persuasion and leverage. It is during this formative period that Vic recruits the earnest Lemansky and the volatile Ronnie Gardocki, laying the groundwork for what would become television's most morally ambiguous police unit.

Officer Julien Lowe begins his partnership with the seasoned Danny Sofer, who would evolve into his reluctant mentor. Claudette's decision to circumvent protocol and push her strategy independently—successfully securing Latigo's cooperation and leading to the kidnappers' arrest—profoundly impacts Dutch. Witnessing her tactical brilliance and moral conviction firsthand, he undergoes a complete reassessment, now recognising Claudette as his true professional role model rather than the ostensibly impressive but ultimately shallow Gannon.

Co-Pilot functions effectively as an ambitious prequel, enriching character backgrounds and filling narrative gaps left by the series' forward momentum. Like most prequels, its true power lies in the dramatic irony afforded by prior knowledge of character arcs—viewers understand the tragic fates awaiting temporary returnees like the incarcerated Gilroy or the doomed Rondell, Connie, and Crowley. This temporal perspective transforms what might otherwise be a straightforward origin story into a deeply poignant exploration of paths not yet fully travelled but already determined. The episode's status as a "bottle episode"—conceived by series creator Shawn Ryan as a practical solution to filming difficulties caused by the actor's disfigurement makeup for Ronnie—adds an intriguing meta-textual layer, demonstrating how production constraints can sometimes yield unexpectedly rich narrative opportunities.

The episode's explicit content, particularly its unflinching portrayal of both female and male nudity, serves distinct narrative purposes. While the female nudity underscores the vulnerability of victims within the precinct's jurisdiction, the male nudity functions as a crucial character moment for Julien Lowe. His visible discomfort when Lem disrobes in the Barn's communal showers poignantly illustrates his internal struggle with his homosexuality—a conflict that would define his character arc throughout the series. More problematically, Ryan and co-writer Glen Mazzara attempted an overly ambitious task: compressing comprehensive origin stories for nearly every major character into a single 45-minute episode. This narrative compression inevitably led to continuity issues, with certain character details contradicting established backstory from previous episodes—a flaw that undermined the series' meticulously constructed realism. The episode's attempts to provide neat, teleological explanations for complex character developments occasionally felt contrived, sacrificing nuance for expediency.

Nevertheless, Co-Pilot contains moments of exceptional power, particularly in its portrayal of Vic Mackey's transformation from a conventional detective into the morally compromised anti-hero audiences would come to know. The episode masterfully illustrates how his "just this once" justification for crossing ethical boundaries established a dangerous precedent that would spiral into full-blown murderous corruption. Significantly, Vic maintains a consistent protective instinct towards women throughout the episode, making the scene where he must listen to Connie being brutally abused by Lionel—forced to remain hidden to preserve his sting operation—one of the series' most heartbreaking sequences. His visible anguish, coupled with his inability to intervene despite his protective instincts, reveals the profound psychological cost of his chosen path long before the series' tragic conclusion.

In the end, Co-Pilot is a fascinating, if flawed, experiment in narrative retro-engineering. While its structural ambitions occasionally exceed its execution, and its continuity issues remain problematic, the episode succeeds in its core objective: providing a compelling origin story that enriches our understanding of The Shield's morally complex universe. By revealing the tentative first steps of corruption rather than its full-blown manifestation, the episode forces viewers to confront uncomfortable questions about the banality of evil and the seductive nature of compromise.

The other day I watched a recent film by Jia Zhangke which was a pleasant surprise, but the only reason I discovered that film was from having Ash Is Purest White in mind. Lately I've been thinking about it a lot and really wanting to give it another watch and see how it holds up now that I have a different perspective on filmmaking from the previous years. I've really been craving these sorts of crime and drama films from Asia as of late; where a few years back there was a great number of these films popping up at various film festivals, each tackling this concept of the changing landscape within mainland China in particular, showcasing its harsh realities within the industrial and post-industrial towns and cities which crumbled as the nation elsewhere shifted its interests, leaving these locations behind with a strong nostalgia and set of struggles. They're very delicate films in that sense, ones that speak on the changing times and the people left behind within locations stuck in the past.

Rewatching this definitely was an interesting revisit. I saw a lot of scenes that were shot around the same time as the ones used in the previous film I saw called Caught by the Tides, though they were not reused scenes or takes, just ones of the same location in which the same actors or actresses were used, in the same clothing. Moments like this did pull me out of the story a bit having known that the director had used footage from his previous films in his more recent one, though it didn't pull me out of the immersion of its world and narrative. Not changing how I saw and felt about the film in that sense. Though I could see how someone might watch one and then the other and find something off with it. Not really a problem with the film itself, after all. Just that realisation of its world being a film and not a story with living, breathing people which sometimes we all come to love with storytelling through film.

Revisiting the film came with a bit of reading about the director and the film's general concept. I was quite surprised to see that, much like many of his other films, this is a story that is heavily influenced by his own life. Having witnessed so many different stories unfolding within his town growing up, which also grew a bit of an obsession for him with capturing the region around Datong. Adventuring beyond and seeing what other stories he would find in old industrial zones. What's more surprising here is that the story surrounds the leader of a gang, to which the director stated he was actually quite admirable of growing up. This sets up a powerful protagonist for sure, one in which we can find admiration for, seeing his power but also respecting the more human side of. Thus bringing us to the romance side of the film's genre.

With the changing economic times of Datong, which relied once heavily on its coal mining, not much promise remains within the city. Thus bringing attention more to the money to be made in more illegal terms. Troubled times for a dramatic group of crime syndicates leads to our protagonist falling for a woman. The two thinking of what to do next, whether they should flee the dangerous environment, get married and start anew. Though the woman doesn't display any interest in leaving. Naturally, you can imagine what happens next. This isn't a story that easily falls into place for its characters, particularly ones caught up in the violence of crime. The man's boss recently murdered instilling more fear into him as he sees no future where he currently is. Ultimately, the film is more on two people that wanted to be together but saw no real manner of being so. Where their lives are so vastly different that they never quite find that inner peace within themselves to connect.

Bin, our male protagonist, is a troubled man that wants out. Constantly in search of a way to leave Datong, and constantly trying to find way to have Qiao by his side in doing so, but the tough climate of Datong leads to her imprisonment having taken the fall for an illegal firearm that belonged to Bin. Bin stays far away from her during her sentence, which is what sours their relationship for good. Having not supported her for taking the fall, where her loyalty was stronger than he deserved. This creates the film's structure in which the narrative explores their struggled attempt to start and close a relationship as Bin moves on in life, attempting to put his past behind him, which included her.

The story takes us through the various landscapes around Datong. Itself rundown and tired. A city that holds no future for anyone. Where its previous coal mining operations have fallen and left nothing but old buildings from the previous era. Natural landscapes of nothing. They hold great beauty but can be seen as a trap, a large wall of mountains which keeps them stuck within the same spaces. Incapable of growing beyond. From a directing point of view it's a beautiful film through that. Its very textural and real environments that show the isolation the characters feel. Bin in his desperation to move away and start his new life, and Qiao having lost a few years of her life for a man she believed actually wanted to live with her. In some ways it shows how these two characters are what they need from each other, but can't seem to find that common ground to settle.

Despite being a film surrounded by the concept of crime, it felt more like a film that speaks on the struggles to live and love. Where pasts keep returning. An environment keeps pulling them back in despite their attempts to move forward. It shows how an environment does shape us, how it can control us and keep us down.

Los furros regresan a la gran pantalla, Y esto no lo digo de manera mala sino que la verdad es que esta segunda parte es impresionante las críticas sociales que están planteadas están llevadas al siguiente nivel sobre todo en el contexto de lo que está sucediendo actualmente con la discriminación, y la parte de los furros lo recalco porque el personaje de Giselle el personaje que interpreta Shakira sí está un pelín sexualizado no creo que sea malo del todo pero si es bastante evidente, de resto la relación de Nick Y Judith va progresando de manera fraternal y no creo que de manera romántica como muchas personas intentan resaltar.

The furries are back on the big screen, and I don't mean that in a bad way, but the truth is that this second part is impressive. The social critiques it raises are taken to the next level, especially in the context of what is currently happening with discrimination, I emphasize the furries part because the character of Giselle, played by Shakira, is a bit sexualized. I don't think it's entirely bad, but it is quite obvious. Otherwise, the relationship between Nick and Judith progresses in a brotherly way, and I don't think it's romantic, as many people try to emphasize.

La película No puedo decir que esté mejor que la primera pero tampoco es peor que la misma la verdad es que está muy a la par y es una digna secuela y creo que es el camino correcto que Disney debe tomar en este momento sé que muchos pueden estar en contra de estas secuelas eternas en vez de desarrollar nuevos proyectos pero si todas las secuelas tienen una calidad como esta la verdad es que van por muy buen camino esto lo menciono porque la película de moana 2 No fue buena del todo De hecho noté que tenía bastantes fallos a nivel de guión sé Es evidente que iba a ser una serie y no una película pero también bueno estuvo bastante agradable pero esta película consigue elevar un buen nivel la verdad es que si fuiste fanático de la primera tienes que ir a ver esta película los nuevos personajes incluidos tan muy buenos, y claro para los que tenían pensado que Nicky judi van a terminar siendo pareja esto no va a suceder de hecho se nota claramente en la película que ellos tienen un amor muy fraternal casi como si fueran hermanos o amigos al menos hasta el punto de esta segunda película pero sí es cierto que te aplican el contexto suficiente para una tercera O al menos una serie de televisión.

I can't say that the film is better than the first one, but it's not worse either. The truth is that it's very much on par and is a worthy sequel, and I think it's the right path for Disney to take at this point. I know that many may be against these endless sequels instead of developing new projects, but if all the sequels are of this quality, the truth is that they are on the right track. I mention this because the film Moana 2 wasn't all that good. In fact, I noticed that it had quite a few flaws in the script. I know it was obviously going to be a series and not a movie, but it was still quite enjoyable. However, this movie manages to raise the bar. The truth is that if you were a fan of the first one, you have to go see this movie. The new characters are so good, and of course, for those who thought that Nicky and Judi were going to end up as a couple, that's not going to happen. In fact, it's clear in the movie that they have a very brotherly love, almost as if they were siblings or friends, at least up to this second movie, but it's true that they give you enough context for a third movie, or at least a TV series.

The biggest negative detail that some may suddenly see in this film is that they may feel that it is a bit more of the same because, as I said before, it is not that the first one is better than the second, but they are on par. However, if you were a big fan of Zootopia, seeing this sequel will leave you totally amazed. And yes, although the animation is not hugely different from the first one, there are slight details that have been upgraded to the next level. level.

His patronage propels her to stardom, and they marry, but their union is soon poisoned by diverging trajectories: Esther’s ascent coincides with John’s precipitous decline, accelerated by substance abuse and professional obsolescence. His self-destructive spiral reaches its nadir when he drunkenly crashes Esther’s triumphant Grammy acceptance, humiliating her on national television. Though Esther forgives his transgressions – even after discovering him in flagrante with a groupie-like journalist (Marta Heflin) – their attempt at reconciliation on a remote ranch ends abruptly in an alcohol-fuelled tragedy that claims John’s life.

Superficially, this iteration honours Wellman’s foundational premise: a Cinderella narrative wherein a woman’s professional ascendancy inversely mirrors her lover-mentor’s ruinous descent. Yet the 1976 version sought distinction by transplanting the action from Hollywood soundstages to the arena rock circuit, replacing the washed-up actor archetype with a dissolute rock star. This shift was ostensibly strategic – capitalising on rock music’s cultural dominance in the mid-1970s while exploiting the dissolution of the Hays Code to inject gritty authenticity with liberal doses of profanity, narcotics, and fleeting nudity. Conceptually, it promised a New Hollywood sensibility applied to a Classic Hollywood framework. Alas, this ambition was fatally compromised from inception when Streisand, already a colossus in music and film, transformed the project into a self-aggrandising showcase. Her artistic identity, rooted in Broadway theatricality and traditional pop sophistication, proved fundamentally incompatible with the raw, rebellious ethos of rock music. Kristofferson, though a country artist by origin, embodied the rock star persona with convincing authenticity, his lived-in ruggedness and gravelly vocal delivery lending credence to John’s self-destruction. Streisand, by contrast, exudes an unshakeable aura of calculated diva-dom; her meticulously crafted vocals, however technically impeccable, jar discordantly against Kristofferson’s earthy performances, never quite convincing as the product of a gritty bar-band upbringing.

Compounding this tonal dissonance is the utter absence of palpable chemistry between the leads. Their romance unfolds with mechanical predictability rather than organic passion, a failure exacerbated by a script – co-written by Frank Pierson, John Gregory Dunne, and Joan Didion – that neglects to cultivate believable emotional intimacy. Scenes intended to convey profound connection instead feel like perfunctory plot obligations, devoid of the messy, lived-in quality essential to selling such an operatic tragedy. One senses not two souls intertwined by fate and artistry, but two performers occupying parallel universes, their interactions stiffened by mutual artistic incompatibility and behind-the-scenes friction.

Further undermining the film’s emotional impact is its notoriously anti-climactic denouement. John’s demise, ambiguously framed as a drunk-driving accident rather than the explicit suicide mandated by the original script, robs the tragedy of its necessary catharsis. This narrative cowardice stemmed directly from producer Jon Peters’ interference, leveraging his position as Streisand’s romantic partner to override creative integrity during test screenings. Peters’ meddling extended far beyond the ending; his relentless micromanagement of every aspect – from musical selections to character motivations – transformed the production into a toxic battleground. Director Frank Pierson, an Oscar-winning screenwriter fresh from Dog Day Afternoon, found himself so emasculated by the triumvirate of Streisand, Peters, and a disengaged Kristofferson that he later chronicled the experience in a scathing magazine exposé. Though this account did little to dent the film’s immediate commercial success or Streisand’s standing, it cemented the 1976 A Star Is Born’s reputation as a vanity project – another example of ego triumphing over artistry.

In retrospect, the film’s failure to endure feels inevitable. Where the 1937 original captured Depression-era Hollywood with unflinching realism, and the 2018 remake dissected modern celebrity culture with surgical precision, the 1976 version exists in an uncomfortable limbo – too slick for gritty authenticity, too self-serious for camp appeal. Its musical numbers, once chart-topping phenomena, now sound dated and overproduced; its attempts at gritty realism feel contrived, its emotional beats unearned. Streisand’s undeniable vocal prowess cannot compensate for her fundamental miscasting, while Kristofferson’s authentic rock-star weariness is squandered on a script that denies him meaningful depth. The toxic production dynamics bled onto the screen, leaving behind a film that, despite its initial accolades, ultimately embodies the very themes it sought to explore: the corrosive nature of fame, the perils of artistic compromise, and the tragic spectacle of immense potential squandered.

Few movies have captured the soul-crushing absurdity of modern office life better than Office Space. Released in 1999, it bombed in theaters but slowly became one of the biggest cult classics of its era. Anyone who’s ever sat in a cubicle, dealt with pointless memos, or answered to a manager who shouldn’t even be managing a stapler knows exactly why this film still hits so hard. It’s funny, it’s oddly comforting, and it’s one of those rare movies that gets more relatable every year.

The plot centers on Peter Gibbons, a burned-out software employee at a company called Initech. He’s stuck in that corporate loop where nothing matters, everything’s inefficient, and no one has a clue what they’re doing. After a hypnotherapy session goes wrong, he suddenly stops caring — and ironically becomes the most productive and admired worker in the office. That’s the magic of the film: it exposes how ridiculous corporate culture is by showing how success often has nothing to do with competence or effort.

The cast is a big part of why the movie works. Ron Livingston nails the tone as Peter: bored, frustrated, and quietly rebellious. Jennifer Aniston plays Joanna, the restaurant worker who is dealing with her own brand of customer-service hell. And then there’s Gary Cole as Bill Lumbergh, the passive-aggressive manager who can ruin your entire week with one slow, nasal “Yeahhh… I’m gonna need you to come in on Saturday.” Stephen Root absolutely steals scenes as Milton, the mumbling office ghost who just wants his red Swingline stapler back.

What really gives Office Space its personality is the soundtrack. Instead of going the typical quirky comedy route, the movie went full 90s gangsta rap — and it was the perfect choice. Tracks from Ice Cube, Scarface, Geto Boys, and others add this hilarious contrast between the dullness of office work and the fantasy of rebellion brewing inside every frustrated employee. “Damn It Feels Good to Be a Gangsta” basically became a cultural shorthand for office rebellion because of this movie.

Of course, no discussion about Office Space is complete without mentioning the printer scene. Watching Peter, Michael Bolton, and Samir drag that malfunctioning printer into a field and beat it senseless is still one of the most cathartic moments in film history. Anyone who’s dealt with a jammed copier or a broken corporate system knows exactly what that scene represents. It’s violent, ridiculous, and somehow therapeutic.

The movie also digs into something deeper beneath the jokes: the way corporations treat people like replaceable parts. Whether it’s endless TPS reports, pointless meetings, or managers who reward obedience instead of talent, the film highlights how dehumanizing the system can be. And the irony is, nothing has changed since 1999. If anything, office culture has gotten worse more metrics, more surveillance, more bureaucracy. That’s why Office Space still feels brand new.

In the end, the film isn’t about overthrowing the system so much as escaping it. Peter’s journey from miserable employee to someone who just wants a simple, honest life builds the story’s charm. It’s a reminder that happiness isn’t found in cubicles, titles, or corporate ladders as it’s found in actually living your life.

More than twenty years later, Office Space remains one of the most accurate comedies ever made about work. It’s funny, sharp, brutally honest, and timeless. Anyone who’s ever sat under fluorescent lights knows exactly why this movie endures. It’s less a film and more a therapy session disguised as a comedy.

Few can 'boast' of having fallen from the top to the bottom as swiftly as Kevin Spacey, who, less than a decade ago, was the Hollywood equivalent of a deity, only to be treated like radioactive waste today by all those who worshipped him. The same could be said of the audience, at least judging by the performance of his 2018 film, Billionaire Boys Club, at the box office, which earned just $618 in ticket sales – a figure which seems pitiful even when you consider the film was only shown in ten theatres. And, of course, Kevin Spacey is solely to blame for this, given that many critics, who before the whole sexual abuse scandal would have lifted him to the skies, now consider their moral duty to bury his film and thus send a clear message to all future Hollywood 'players' who fancy playing at being Harvey Weinstein. All of this is, of course, rather unfair on director James Cox and the rest of the cast who, through no fault of their own, had to watch a film into which they had poured money, effort, and talent end up in the septic tank. But even if you account for this injustice and ignore the whole Spacey brouhaha, that doesn't mean Billionaire Boys Club is a good film.

The film, also served as co-written by Cox, is based on true events that took place in 1980s Los Angeles and became major scandals and media circuses of the era. They were set in motion by Joe Hunt (Ansel Elgort), a young but ambitious financial whizz who, despite his humble origins, attended an elite school for the children of wealthy and influential parents from Beverly Hills. In 1983, after a chance encounter with his old school friend and the film's narrator, Dean Karny (Taron Egerton), Joe hits upon the idea of combining his stock market skills with money provided by his old schoolmates, who see this as a chance to finally enjoy a luxury they've earned themselves, rather than one granted by their parents. The result is an investment fund called the Billionaire Boys Club, whose members very quickly begin to amass enormous wealth, and then spend it even faster, throwing their money around with abandon in one of the world's most snobbish cities. However, the brilliant results Hunt achieved were not a consequence of his genius, but rather of his cavalier attitude towards business ethics, creative accounting, and techniques no different from pyramid schemes. In his efforts to pay back his friends and investors, Hunt is forced to borrow money and thus encounters Ron Levin (Spacey), a well-padded and even better-connected financier who is supposed to become his partner. Although both are deeply impressed with one another, their relationship will not end well and instead will become one of the most spectacular criminal cases in California's history.

The case of Joe Hunt and his friends became the subject of a 1987 mini-series in which Hunt was played by Judd Nelson, who, in this film, appears in the small role of Hunt's father. This new version, while not looking like a particularly big-budget film at first glance, can boast a rather interesting cast, where alongside young talents like Elgort and Egerton, there is also room for veterans like the now-unrecognisable Cary Elwes in the role of Andy Warhol. Cox can also be commended for managing, despite limited resources, to quite effectively reconstruct the 1980s, not just through music and fashion, but also through the zeitgeist, at least when it comes to the arrogant, greedy spoilt brats of the so-called 'Decade of Greed'. However, when it comes to weaving all this into a coherent story, Cox is far less successful, and numerous scriptwriting deficiencies become apparent. This is most evident in the fact that Cox didn't even attempt to explain how Hunt's 'pyramid' actually functioned or how and why it ultimately collapsed. Inevitable comparisons to The Wolf of Wall Street will, of course, be to the detriment of Billionaire Boys Club, although, in the interest of truth, it should be noted that finance, or white-collar crime, is not only complicated but also rather un-cinematic, even for a maestro like Scorsese, for whom Wolf isn't among his better films. However, Cox made the film worse with a completely unnecessary subplot involving Hunt's girlfriend, played by Emma Roberts, and also by rushing or relegating some of the story's potentially most fascinating elements, primarily those relating to the court trials, to the closing credits. Billionaire Boys Club could have been a very good film, but it isn't, and one of the greatest ironies is that the ostracised Spacey, who delivered yet another brilliant acting performance here, has the least to do with that failure."
