When one thinks of Natsuki Subaru they think of perseverance, bravery, goodwill and tolerance. Throughout the show we've seen him go through trials and tribulations that would make normal men scream, retch and cower. Yet even though he feels all the pain and dies numerous times, he goes in still knowing that he'll come back to life. Still, is it really that simple?

The Return by Death hack in the anime world is an easy one to understand, especially if you're a gamer. It's like the world has a checkpoint after the story has progressed to a certain point and if by chance you get killed you can always return to that checkpoint and try again. It's a wonderful skill to have, especially in such a scary and fatal world. Still, it isn't a skill that is all good because it is such a scary and fatal world because once a man dances with death too many times, he's sure to leave a lot on the dancefloor.

In this season, Subaru and his crew go to the Pleiades watch tower in a bid to save Rem and the people of Priestella from the curse of The Sin of Gluttony. A mission that seemed to be going well, one that I thought would certainly be their simplest yet, a small side story before the major battle where they might simply bring in a new comrade or a new skill (like all general mini arcs tend to do)

But now as I stare in shock at my screen, I look and I realize that I might be watching the climax point of the full anime, surely the best season of the show to come out so far and most definitely one of the best character development moments to witness in the Isekai world.

Subaru lost his memories and rediscovered the Return By Death hack by having one of the most realistic, graphic and gruesome death's that can happen to someone. This is a human being that has just come into an Isekai world, straight into a quest with people he doesn't know, things he doesn't know how to fight or how they kill and the fear and full terror of a depressed 17-18 year old. It didn't take long for his whole mind to start breaking down, from lack of trust to trying to kill others before they kill him, to feeling and experiencing himself get killed 3 times. He was stumped, and we the viewers totally understood why. It is very easy to imagine a hero who finds out he can die and come back to life and he won't be affected by dying multiple times. Yet it's very real to know that even though you'll come back to life, it's a primal instinct to not want to die. A primal instinct to question why everyone has so much faith in you being brave when you aren't brave, when you are powerless and when you want to run and hide.

Subaru confronts these fears and loses to them. Time and time again, he loses and we as the viewers are taken deeper and deeper into this darkness spiral as his depression deepens.

The storytelling was beautiful, a simple trick of showing and not telling, you're left in awe and dismay as he lashes out, destroying friendships made in earlier seasons not until we go deep into the trauma at the very last episode due to Emilia's help are we able to see a bit of light.

A little ray of hope that helps guide Subaru out of the situation he's been caught in.

This season had a wonderful accomplishment. It didn't show that Subaru was depressed, we knew that since, nor did it show he was weak or a coward or unworthy, that has literally been his gimmick the whole time. What this season showed was that his power wasn't ever a power, just a curse that he was implementing due to his intense mental will and sense of who he was. Once he lost that, we saw the return by death curse for just how heinous it truly is. This season 4 isn't a thriller, I can say it's a slow burn horror, one that would give you chills and would make you pray someone just ends it for him. It is a masterpiece, and I sure can't wait for the second part to begin airing.

Hello anime fans

Because of my current schedule with life , as an anime lover , I recently finished seeing Black clover, and honestly? theres no regrets, whatsoever, none, this one earned its spot on my list.

Let me start from the obvious place Asta, is a boy born with ZERO magic in a world where magic is literally everything, so you think about that for a second, everyone around him has some kind of power, some kind of edge, and this guy has nothing but a loud mouth, a big heart, and a will that refuses to quit. I won't lie, in the first few episodes I was like, okay, is this going to be another one of those shows where the MC just shouts a lot and wins by plot armor?, But nah, Black Clover earns it, I mean every win Asta gets, you feel like you were in the trenches with him.

And that's really the heartbeat of this whole series , hard work over talent. In a genre where chosen one and natural prodigy storylines are everywhere, Black Clover said no, yes, let's do the opposite, we give you a guy who has to bleed for every inch of progress and thhat hit different for me, because life is like that too, no be everybody get natural advantage from birth, some of us just dey grind.

Now Yuno, Asta's rival and best friend that dynamic alone is worth the watch Itis not the toxic kind of rivalry where they hate each other, It's the kind where they push each other, where one man's success genuinely makes the other work harder instead of feeling salty. I loved that, it is rare to see healthy competition portrayed like that on screen, and honestly, more friendships in real life should look like that.

And 5he Black Bulls squad , they are chaotic, messy, full of misfits nobody wanted and somehow they became my favorite part of the whole show , because that's what found family looks like, they are not perfect people, but broken, flawed, weird people who choose each other anyway, Yami as a captain who doesn't coddle anybody but still has their back to the end? That man is built different.

See here, the show is NOT perfect, there were a lot of scenes that dragged, some fights went on longer than they needed to, and there were moments I was just waiting for them to get to the point already, a few side characters got sidelined when they clearly deserved more screen time, I won't pretend those flaws don't exist, because they do.

But here's the thing, even with those flaws, I never once thought about dropping it, even with being busy with life itself, because plenty of shows lose me halfway through when the pacing gets shaky, but Black Clover just kept pulling me back in, episode after episode, because the emotional core never wavered, the characters always felt like they were fighting for something real, not just fighting for the sake of a cool animation sequence.

And can we talk about the magic system for a second? So creative, Grimoires, different magic attributes, the way everyone's power ties into their personality and backstory — it never felt lazy or thrown together.

At the end of the day, Black Clover reminded me why I love anime in the first place, seriously speaking, It is not always about the strongest character winning., sometimes it's about the one who refuses to give up, even when the whole world tells him he's not built for it.

170 episodes later, I'm not just satisfied i'm inspired and that's rare for a show this long to still pull off_ Solid watch...... No cap.

Read the Room is the third episode of Lucky, and this is the one where I started worrying the show loves its main character a little too much for its own good, just too much convinient luck. I was also wondering when they were going to put out her official name and it turns out to be Luciana, she can talk her way out of almost anything, and this episode goes so hard on it that staying alive starts to feel less like skill and more like the universe just clearing a path for her every single time she needs one, not saying that I didnt like the episode but it takes out from it. Her dad John spent her whole childhood training her to read a room and that is exactly why the flashbacks work, they explain how she can slide into some random kids birthday party and pass herself off like she belongs there. My issue is this one stop just hands her everything on her checklist, clean clothes, cash, a car and no one at that party notice or caught her, yeah its a great oportunity but what are the odds every single person was at the backyard and not even one cleaning lady at sight considering this is a part of wealthy people. Its still fun to watch, Anya Taylor Joy sells a lot of that confidence, but there is a real difference between a con artist creating her own opening and a story just handing her a full escape kit. This scene is way closer to the perfect escape kit for me than just pure skills, in real life we call it luck although others call it knowing when to pull the trigger and sometimes its a theory hard to prove or disprove. I want her to be smart, but the show keeps stacking careless easy marks in front of her until any real tension just disappears, at some point the show has to let her fail because right now her confidence feels protected by whoever is writing her checklist, not earned by her.

There are more simple and rough momenets that just work a lot better for me because Lucky cannot control what she is watching this time, she is stuck hiding on a property tied to her mother in law while Dutch is just beating the hell out of a man who does not have any answers everyone wants out of him, and his cooperation getting him nowhere is what makes that scene feel dangerous in a way the birthday party never felt like, its the total opposite because at the party she was in control and now she is a second away from getting caught. Lucky is scared at the stables, actually scared and I like that the show lets her sit in that fear instead of calmly handling everything thrown at her, but then her phone call with John right after matters too, he talks her down from panic in seconds, making me ask myself how did he train her so well al this time that even when she is in total panic mode far away from him all she needed what her father voice, but he is also the same guy who taught a little kid how to steal cash from distracted parents at a birthday party and that is a contradiction more interesting because how can she be so calm? is it just the fact that one situation can get you killed and the other to jail? hhmmm the show makes it hard to know if in fact her talent is just black and white instead of gray areas. She is using his lessons to survive, but those same lessons are the reason she keeps using innocent people without thinking twice. I also felt like the episode never stops to make excuses for that either, she is easy to root for, but nobody is trying to sell her as some innocent victim here, and thats a smart choice on the shows part, this story and the main character are really a roller coster.

The hunt for Cary picks up real speed, faster than I expected thanks to the escape kit I mention before, and I think cramming this much movement into one chapter is because this whole season only gets seven episodes total, aside that this is a mini series so they dont have much time. Some of that speed works and some feels like another shortcut, the same problem as before, but there is one scene in the back half that completely earns itself, a con she runs on a guy connected to a rental property. Her plan here is actually clever, she plays drunk to get close to him, gets her hands on his phone long enough to send herself information about his wife, then uses that leverage to force his help without ever raising her voice, and it is one of the best scenes in the whole damn episode because Lucky is creating her advantage instead of stumbling into it, I know it might sound as a fantasy but at this point in time I have come to realize this is just a story of someone so damn lucky that is absurd so just go with it and decide if you enjoy someone been that Lucky. She reads exactly what kind of guy he is, lets him think he is in control, then flips the whole situation on him, and Anya Taylor Joy is fantastic in this moment, looking unsteady for a second before snapping into someone completely locked in, although this is too damn predictable. I wanted way more scenes built like this one, where her skill actually explains the result instead of convenient timing, because the birthday party and a couple other scenes during this episode just go too hard on lucky breaks, while this rental scene shows exactly why Lucky is dangerous when she just go for it, and it seems like her monther in law and Dutch also knows this, makes me wonder if Lucky did some jobs for them although there is a scene with John where she clearly tells him she wants nothing of it.

This episode turn things way better for me because this episode pulls Lucky toward Cary, yeah very convinient but thats the whole thing about this mini series, there is one task at hand and thats get to know why Cary dump her, the husband she has been chasing and closing that gap this early feels like the right call because the personal betrayal here is more interesting than another hour of address chasing or arguing who is going to die because there is 10 million missing. Cary left with a pile of money and built himself a comfortable life somewhere quiet while Lucky spent all of this time running, stealing and eating actual shit just to survive, and everything she finds tells her he did not vanish because he got scared and confused, he planned this out for himself, and I wonder if Cary is going to be able to talk her down and get Lucky on his side again, she is mad AF so its going to be interesting. This is why John warns her at one point that she is thinking with anger instead of her head and he is totally right about it, even though its a strange piece of advice coming from the same guy who helped build the criminal life she is stuck inside, somewhere down the line she got into the family business or became John partner. Lucky has every reason to be furious, but rushing toward kicking the hell out of Cary wont get her answers, so far she has not show any sadness as a wife who gets dump the way he did, any other woman must feel terrible but Lucky is so calculative that she shows nothing, reason why I think episode 4 is going to show some of those feelings towards what Cary did to her. Feelings about Cary mess with her training, this is where I think the episode finally hands her a problem that her dads whole rulebook does not have an answer for.

This is maybe a first for me, but definitely not the last. I like action movies, but can't stand those made in the US anymore. Unfortunately this genre took a turn and went in a direction I can't stand anymore. When the focus is solely on what tough guys the elite force members are, on how to show off and suffocate the viewers with stupid jokes, I'm out. What the US has done with these action movies makes your stomach turn. Most likely I'm going to ruffle some feathers with this paragraph, but that's the truth. Anyway, let's get back to the movie.

Elite Force, or GIGN is a French series released on July 2026, it is different and definitely worth watching.

France's top-tier police unit, GIGN, tackles high-stakes missions. These elite officers specialize in counterterrorism, rescuing hostages, and safeguarding government VIPs. They're the go-to force when national security is on the line.

The story starts with training new recruits but revolves around an old case, that is connected to the present in many ways. David Berger (Tomer Sisley) is training new recruits and planning to retire, when a terrorist group hits an army vehicle transporting guns, explosives and kills a few officers in the process. As it happens in these cases, it's an all hands on deck as both the guns and the explosive has to be retrieved before anything bad happens. David Berger along with his unit, starts an operation to capture the culprits.

As no matter how good you are, nothing is straight forward in this business and things get complicated pretty soon and not only with the mission, but also with Max Villiers (Tristan Zanchi), a new recruit he seems problematic at the beginning for David, but it turns out, there's more to it, a lot more. He doesn't get the same treatment as the rest of the pack.

This incident forced David to reconsider his retirement and joins the team to help them get the stolen ammunition back As the case evolves, we get more questions, old secrets surface and things get really complicated for everyone.

The story is combining action with family drama which makes it more interesting. The script writers made sure to keep a healthy balance between the two and even though at some point you have your suspicion about where the story wants to go, it's still enjoyable.

What I need to mention here is that the writers didn't want to go commando, create a regiment of Rambos and kept the scenes real, without exaggeration. The characters are well written, no unnecessary stories or characters. From moral point of view, we get some action outside the line that is going to make put yourself in their shoes and ask what you'd have done, but obviously it's easier to judge in front of the TV.

The series has six episodes and as I always go in blindly, I thought that's all we got, but the last episode ended with a cliffhanger, that made me realize there will be a second season (unless they cancel it due to insufficient funds, but I hope not). I personally am happy we get to see a second season and hope they are going to make it meaningful and not ruin it as sometimes happen.

If you're fed up with the exaggerated Hollywood action movies, give it a try. You won't regret it.

By the way, my French is basic, so I chose English and can say it is really good. They kept the dubbing real, no slang and stupid accent that has no place in a French movie.

To kick things off, I want to review a series I’m currently rewatching: Bates Motel, starring the brilliant Freddie Highmore (also known for The Good Doctor) and Vera Farmiga. Bates Motel is a five-season series available on Amazon Prime. It is inspired by the fictional character Norman Bates, and the story begins with his youth. In the first season, Norma and Norman Bates—a mother and son with an incredibly close bond—move to a small town to open a motel. They have fled a terrible accident that claimed the life of Norman’s father and are determined to build a new life and create new opportunities, but life isn't that simple. Norman is a somewhat atypical, introverted, and odd boy, yet shortly after arriving, he forms special friendships with two girls: Bradley, a very pretty girl with a rebellious streak, and Emma, a classmate suffering from a serious illness who carries an oxygen tank. Norma struggles with her beloved son drifting away, partly because she desperately needs his help to get the motel up and running; furthermore, she treats Norman as if he were much younger and is excessively overprotective of him. However, a nasty incident occurs almost immediately upon their arrival: the motel's former owner refuses to accept the new owners and attacks Norma, raping her. She defends herself and kills him—a terrible start to their new life—forcing her and Norman to hide the body and clean up the scene. Honestly, I really enjoyed the first season; it’s where you get to know the well-developed characters and see the story's various dynamics take shape. The unhealthy bond between mother and son is particularly unsettling and heavily emphasized here, highlighting Norma’s authoritarian and overbearing nature; at the same time, we begin to witness the process that will eventually turn Norman Bates into a monster. The season moves at a brisk pace and hooks the viewer right from the start, packing in plenty of dark, tragic events. The atmosphere is grim and gritty—something I appreciated, as it perfectly captures the show's setting and the town's web of secrets and crimes. In my opinion, it’s a solid first season—perhaps the best of the entire series—though I’ll discuss the subsequent seasons in future posts. See you soon, blog friends! If you love series about killers—shows that are unsettling and a bit dark—you absolutely have to watch Bates Motel!

Sinceramente, disfruté mucho de la primera temporada; es ahí donde conoces a unos personajes bien desarrollados y ves cómo cobran forma las diversas dinámicas de la historia. El vínculo enfermizo entre madre e hijo resulta especialmente inquietante y se enfatiza enormemente, poniendo de relieve la naturaleza autoritaria y dominante de Norma; al mismo tiempo, empezamos a presenciar el proceso que acabará convirtiendo a Norman Bates en un monstruo. La temporada avanza a buen ritmo y engancha al espectador desde el principio, ofreciendo una gran cantidad de sucesos oscuros y trágicos. La atmósfera es sombría y cruda —algo que valoré positivamente—, ya que captura a la perfección el entorno de la serie y la red de secretos y crímenes del pueblo. Introduction

The movie The Sheep Detective was released in 2026; it is a mystery-comedy film with a unique concept—something I had never seen before, making it a novel experience for me. I had been hearing about the movie for quite some time and asking others for their opinions; everyone who had watched it really liked it and recommended that I see it too. When I first heard the title, I assumed it might be an animated film for children, but after reading the reviews, I felt compelled to watch it. The film also offers valuable lessons, which I will share at the end.

Storyline

The story is set in a small, lush green, and tranquil town—a place with a sparse population and a very peaceful atmosphere. We are introduced to a character named George, a shepherd, played by Hugh Jackman. I have been a long-time fan of Jackman and really loved his portrayal of Wolverine.

George is a shepherd who owns a large flock of sheep; he appears somewhat poor, as he lives in a large caravan rather than a house. He loves his sheep dearly and is deeply attached to them—so much so that he has given each one a name. Among them, the most special is a sheep named Sebastian; he stands out because he is the biggest and strongest of the entire flock. Sebastian is a male, while the smartest female sheep is named Lily. George lives alone, His entire day revolves around the sheep—feeding, bathing, and caring for them. In the evening, it is his daily routine to tell them detective stories. Although he realizes they are merely animals and wonders how much they can actually comprehend, he narrates the tales with such enthusiasm, as if the sheep find them truly fascinating. The most interesting part is that the reality is quite different from what George imagines; the sheep understand every single word of the story perfectly. Moreover, they even discuss the plot among themselves—speculating on who the killer might be—and some are so astute that they actually figure out the murderer's identity. This is where the movie becomes more engaging for me, and the narrative begins to flow smoothly. I mentioned Lily earlier—the smartest sheep in the flock—and she is so clever that she identifies the killer two chapters ahead of everyone else.

This flock includes three young ones—lambs. One of them is nameless and generally disliked by others, but George makes no such distinction; he is particularly fond of this little lamb—loving it even more than the rest of the flock—and bottle-feeds it just as one would a human infant. George’s farm is located near a small town called Denbrook.

Other Characters Introduction

We are also introduced to other characters: a another shepherd named Caleb, a butcher named Ham, and a small hotel owner name Beth. There is a small church here as well, presided over by father Hillcoate। George and Hillcoate did not get along with each other.George is in the midst of writing a letter in which he shares a great deal about himself and his daily routine; it appears that the recipient holds a very special place in his life.

There is another character in this movie who is a journalist. He lives far away from this place and has come here solely to cover a local cultural festival. The journalist's name is Elliot Matthews. Mathews was awaiting a sensational scoop—something that had eluded him for quite some time—and had come to this location at his editor's behest. There was certainly something going on between Beth and George; on one occasion, when George handed a letter to the postman to be mailed, Beth had secretly stolen it.

Turn in Story

One day, Caleb comes to visit George; he has a red vehicle that the sheep really love. They get so excited upon seeing it, perhaps thinking that he and George are about to take them on an outing. A short while later, we see George pushing Caleb out of his caravan; it appears they have had an argument. Witnessing this, the sheep decide it is best to simply forget the incident. An interesting aspect of the movie is that these sheep can choose to forget anything at will—except for one sheep named Maple, who forgets nothing and remembers everything. The other sheep warn Maple not to remind them of the event, and then, counting "one, two, three," they all proceed to forget it.

The Main Mystery Begins

One day, the weather turned severe with heavy rain; George was unable to tell the sheep their story, and the flock retreated to the shelter, leaving the young lambs terrified.

The next morning, when the sheep come outside, they find George lying on the lawn. At first, they think it is a prank—since George often played jokes on them—but when he doesn't wake up after a long time, they check for a pulse and realize his heart has stopped beating. Seeing this, the sheep realize that George has died and become deeply saddened. They all wish to forget the incident, but Maple reminds them that they must not. Meanwhile, a journalist arrives at the farm—having been stranded there overnight due to car trouble—and soon, three or four other people show up one by one after hearing the news. This is where the movie's real thrill begins, and I will pause the story here; if I reveal any more, it might spoil the experience for you, and I do not want to give away any spoilers.

I really enjoyed this movie because, while we have often seen humans acting as detectives and solving mysteries, this film features a unique concept where the detective work is carried out by animals. Along with the mystery, the movie offers plenty of comedy to keep you entertained. You can watch it with young children, as well as with family or friends. The film also conveys a meaningful lesson: whether it involves a human or an animal, if there is a bond of affection, there is no limit to the lengths they might go to for you. Just as humans form deep bonds with one another, they can share equally strong connections with animals. Although the movie isn't very long—clocking in at around two hours—it keeps you entertained right until the end.

I love a bad film that's bad, and God's of Egypt may be a great example of that type of movie. It's a film that could have been a forgettable decent fantasy blockbuster, but decided to go for the chaos at every turn. Let's face it, this is a sincere compliment, and that's the only reason I use the word weirdly.

It's a good idea, but, in theory, an ancient Egyptian empire governed by literal gods, those creatures that can take the form of giant metallic animals, and mortals who live as their slaves. A young mortal man, a thief, Bek joins forces with the injured and exiled Horus to steal the eyes back and restore his power to Horus, and to slay Set before he can impose an oppressive, joyless rule over gods and mortals alike. It's a story line that should have worked for either a rollicking fun adventure or a self-serious slog, and it somehow works as both types of film, sometimes in the same scene.

It has to be acknowledged: casting was a huge deal for this film and rightfully so. The film's main roles of the gods were all white, with the roles of Set (played by Gerard Butler) and Horus (played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) being played by white cast members, while those of other gods were mostly smaller or background parts. There was a huge backlash and even before the film came out, the studio issued a public apology. It's a good thing to think about for a minute, since no "it's a stupid popcorn movie" excuse could take away the reality that this was a genuine, serious failing, and that's a movie that shouldn't have been released.

Sure, for that alone, outside of that.. this would be an impressive film if it wasn't so dead set against the absurd reality it presents. Each and every decision in the production is cranked up to the max. The gods are nine feet tall, for no reason really explained. They bleed gold. During battle, they can transform into giant CGI falcons and beetles. The sets are gold-leafed, lapis-blue-covered, something like a Vegas casino, and the visual effects (not seamless, but garish, maximalist, whatever) while not exactly seamless, they at least do a full commitment to a vision, albeit a kind of ugly one. There's not a wisp of subtlety here and it's just pretty fooling anyone who thinks a blockbuster this big should tone it down a bit.

Playing Set, Gerard Butler knows every inch of his role, and there's a gravelly and almost theatre-playing sense of fun in his role play. He's obviously enjoying himself as a mustache-twirling tyrant god, yelling at people and swaggering around in golden throne rooms as if he's auditioning for a professional wrestling heel gig. Meanwhile, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau appears to be less certain about the tone he's supposed to be hitting Horus vacillates between wounded, brooding antihero and one-liner machine, and it is never really clear whether he's supposed to be taken seriously or not.

The dialogue is an embellished version of the same kind of bad that is generally designed for quotability, not believability. Sentences are expository and sounding like filler text that nobody finished editing, the characters tell what they are going to do and how they feel. But with some of the genuinely stiff line delivery from some of the cast there is a real "so bad it's entertaining" feel to all but a handful of the movie's conversations.

Story-wise, it's thin... mortal thief and wounded god go on a quest, gather a couple of allies and obstacles along the way, face off against the villain in an over-the-top final confrontation. I don't see anything here that rehashes the ‘hero's journey' wheel and the pacing is slow at points where it obviously wants me to feel passion for relationships and stakes that weren't given the time to justify my passion. Bek (Brenton Thwaites) is an easy-to-like everyman energy, but there's never a real weight that belongs to the human/god power dynamic that should be the film's emotional foundation.

In some respects, though, the film succeeds as pure entertainment: awful, indeed. This is a movie that's best viewed with a gang of pals, with a few pitchers of beer in hand, wanting to laugh out loud at funny lines and gawk at wild creative decisions. Lacking any sort of redeeming value in the traditional sense, it is not boring, not by any stretch, and it's not the same thing as a film that just fell short of being big. Well, this is certainly the latter.

Gods of Egypt is a mess, a truly baffling casting choice, a script that's a self parody and an effect that's either amazing or ridiculously cheap based on the scene. But it's also an oddly fascinating watch because of the lack of restraint. I would certainly not include it in my list of good movies, but it would be nice to watch this much-hyped, expensive teaser in this much-spectacularized manner.

I think the film is Objectively bad, but fun to watch bad. Observe with low expectations and with companions.

I must admit I came in with low expectations. Twenty years is a long time to wait for a sequel and the original was complete, self-contained it didn't need an after-thought sequel to keep it relevant. But, of course, legacy sequels have a bad reputation for a reason; often they're just a product of nostalgia. So I expected to be disappointed. Rather, this one pulled me in whole hog, and you can tell it might be one of the most fulfilling sequel-to-the-sequel's I've ever seen.

The concept is clever and the concept deserves its own life. A highly respected journalist, Andy Sachs has been working for 20 years in the industry, well away from the glamorous, cutthroat fashion world that he abandoned until it all comes crashing down on his head and he's drawn straight back into Miranda Priestly's clutches. But this time, there is a world around them that has turned upside down. “Print media is on its deathbed, digital media is chaotic, unforgiving, and even Miranda who was once completely untouchable and seemed immune to consequences of any sort, is fighting tooth with nail.” That change adds an unexpected emotional depth to the entire story. Adding some vulnerability to the original character, Miranda struggles to preserve her dwindling clout as she faces off against her former aide Emily Charlton, who's no longer a struggling underdog but a legitimate executive peer and contender for the advertising business's riches. It's a really interesting progression and it would never be like, oh, Miranda's betraying her own essence; it's like, oh, it's the same woman fighting a new kind of battle.

As you can imagine, Meryl Streep is extraordinary. She's not just making Miranda Priestly fit into a coat that's already been worn by an unforgettable character; she's morphing Miranda into a real, flesh-and-blood personality, adding layers of humanity and humility to her all-out, no-nonsense icy demeanor. The film's quieter moments are pleasantly still and here, when Miranda is pushed to the wall to understand just how much the earth has moved under her feet, is where I was taken aback by how much this sequel really packs in. It's quite one of her best performances in years and a reminder of why this character was such a cultural icon in the first place.

The grounded, likeable energy that made Anne Hathaway the ideal audience surrogate the first time feels comfortable the second time, as a woman with 20 years of life experience. But for this time, it's Emily Blunt who really is the one to shine - as she's been given much more to work with than ever before, as she's not the comic-relief sidekick, but rather, a potent, serious competitor to Miranda, and she steals almost every scene she's in. The Miranda-versus-Emily chemistry is what really gets the blood pumping in her veins, and their chemistry is electric like the original's, with a sharpness and ambition to it that makes it the true powerhouse of the film.

The film looks absolutely wonderful. Returning to the helm, director David Frankel has the same sleek and assured visual flair that made the first film so stylish, if not more. The fashion is a jaw-dropper, the sets are dazzling and the overall production exudes a sense of life and vitality above and beyond mere competence. One of the obvious highlights of the entire film is a banquet sequence set in an amazing museum environment, a beautifully framed shot that is almost “stage” in its perfect composition, a testament to what this franchise does best. The runway scene shot is an absolute show-stopper, too — style, excitement, energy, what the franchise is all about one of several original songs written for the film by Lady Gaga.

That's the thing about this film, however; it's not just about celebrating the past for the past's sake, but rather a fairly sure-handed attempt to bring the world up to speed. It would have been so simple for this sequel to do nothing more than revive the gags of 2006...... the status quo of power, the same cultural references, the same jokes, only with a slightly newer look. Rather it tells a truly new story about relevance, reinvention, legacy... one that unfolds on the real ground of the fall of print and the tumult of the digital world. It's not a complacent or tone-deaf telling of the hardships of retaining power in a world that's always shifting, it's a telling of those that's witty, stylish and surprisingly heartfelt.

When the credits rolled I was really moved, not just entertained, but emotionally involved with these characters that I did not anticipate being involved with going into the movie. Sequels are more often than not, a celebration of the original success, and this is certainly not an exception.
