I have been taking my time to watch some series and movies that I have been waiting to watch for several months, but for reasons I haven't seen them, the most recent series I finished was Atlanta which I discovered while watching videos on Tiktok very casually. I saved it to start watching it (I think I first discovered this series last year) and last weekend I finished it. Atlanta is a series of 4 seasons with 10 episodes each, is a series that encompasses both the genre of comedy, drama and surrealism, an excellent series whose creator is Donald Glover, known actor, singer and director, which besides being the creator of the series, was also director and producer of many episodes.
The series revolves especially in the trio protagonists: Earn, Alfred "Paper Boi" and what is for me the best character of the series: Darius, the series is mainly focused on the experiences of these three characters whose purpose is the exploration of the music scene through rap, also issues such as racism, fame, power and popularity are handled, as well as the representation of the black race inside and outside these areas, but always from a humorous and surrealistic perspective. The series does not have a central plot as such, since each episode can be considered "episodic" and although certain events in the story of an episode are reflected in other episodes, there is no main plot that connects them.
Atlanta manages to create a quite comical image in some moments, exaggerated but also somewhat realistic of the life of an African-American in "nowadays", from the most obvious cliché, to more ambiguous aspects, but at the same time and as I said before, also from a surrealistic scope, which is what highlights this series mostly. From the most simple and even "insignificant" Atlanta is a reflection of certain aspects and moments of modern society with respect to racism, showing it through the actions performed by certain characters and events where the protagonists will have to live such acts throughout several episodes.
Although it is a series that does not necessarily focus on that area, Atlanta also handles the issue of fame through the character of Paper Boi, Earn's cousin, who is his manager. Paper Boi has humble beginnings in his musical field, but throughout the series we see that his popularity is growing, all this taking into account that he had and had to go through many obstacles and many of them were created by themselves. His role in the story is to reflect how an artist, in this case a rapper, little by little fame will shape him as a commercial product, rather than an individual who wants to make music and this is an aspect that Paper Boi is conflicted with during the series.
Earn on the other hand is the character that despite his skin color, due to his preparation and studies does not seem to fit in his neighborhood, but at the same time he does not fit in beyond that, so he is a character that during part of the series is without any direction, has a slightly more realistic view of life and is the pillar of sanity (most of the time) of the series. His desire to succeed and achieve stability in his life makes him get closer to his cousin Paper Boi, having many conflicts throughout the series, but little by little he learns to cope with all the blows that life gives him. He is undoubtedly one of the characters who has the most surreal moments of the series (the first is Darius) and at the same time, he is also the character who has the most "unfair" moments in several episodes throughout the 4 seasons.
Darius, which for me is the best character of the series, is the representative of the most surreal moments of the series, is a character that overflows eccentricity from the first moment he appears on screen, a very charismatic character, which has a much more spiritual worldview and is undoubtedly the one who has the funniest moments of the series. Behind this eccentricity is a character who, although it may not seem so, has his feet firmly on the ground, with ideas and thoughts that at first might sound nonsensical, but which have a degree of depth that is quite accurate depending on the situation in which he finds himself, both alone and with his friends.
Atlanta focuses not only on absurd humor, racism or rap, but also through many episodes manages to create a global critique of various aspects that an African American person can live in their society. Always highlighting the great absurd moments of the series and with moments that although surreal, have a logical sense within this universe.
He estado tomándome mi tiempo para ver alguna que otra serie y película que he estado esperando por ver durante varios meses, pero por motivos no las había visto, la serie más reciente que termine fue Atlanta la cual descubrí en mientras miraba videos en Tiktok muy casualmente. La guarde para empezar a mirarla (creo que descubrí esta serie por primera vez el año pasado) y el fin de semana pasado la termine. Atlanta es una serie de 4 temporadas con 10 episodios cada uno, es una serie que engloba tanto el género de la comedia, el drama y el surrealismo, una serie excelente cuyo creador es Donald Glover, conocido actor, cantante y director, el cual además de haber sido el creador de la serie, también fue director y productor de muchos episodios.
La serie gira especialmente en el trio protagonistas: Earn, Alfred “Paper Boi” y el que es para mí el mejor personaje de la serie: Darius, la serie s3e centra principalmente en la vivencias de estos tres personajes cuya finalidad es la exploración del ámbito musical por medio del rap, también se manejan temas como el racismo, la fama, el poder y popularidad, así como también la representación de la raza negra dentro y fuera de estos ámbitos, pero siempre desde una perspectiva humorística y surrealista. La serie no cuenta con un argumento central como tal, ya que cada episodio se le puede considerar como “episódico” y aunque ciertos acontecimientos de en la historia de un episodio se reflejan en otros episodios, en sí, no hay una trama principal que los conecte.
Atlanta logra crear una imagen bastante cómica en algunos momentos, exagerada pero también algo realista de la vida de un afroamericano en la “actualidad”, desde el cliché más obvio, hasta aspectos más ambiguos, pero a la vez y como dije anteriormente, también desde un ámbito surrealista, lo cual es lo que destaca a esta serie mayormente. Desde lo más simple e incluso “insignificante” Atlanta es un reflejo de ciertos aspectos y momentos de la sociedad moderna con respecto al racismo, demostrándolo por medio de las acciones realizadas por ciertos personajes y eventos donde los protagonistas tendrán que vivir dichos actos a lo largo de varios episodios.
Aunque es una serie que no necesariamente se enfoca en ese ámbito, ya Atlanta también maneja el tema de la fama por medio del personaje de Paper Boi, primo de Earn el cual este último es su manager. Paper Boi tienes inicios humildes en su ámbito musical, pero a lo largo de la serie vemos que su popularidad va creciendo, todo esto teniendo en cuenta que tuvo y tuvieron que atravesar por muchos obstáculos y muchos de ellos fueron creados por ellos mismos. Su papel en la historia es reflejar como un artista, en este caso un rapero, poco a poco la fama lo va a formando como un producto comercial, más que un individuo que quiere hacer música y este es un aspecto con el que Paper Boi se ve en conflicto durante la serie.
Earn por otro lado es el personaje que a pesar de su color de piel, debido a su preparación y estudios parece no encajar en su barrio, pero a la vez no encaja más allá de eso, por lo que es un personaje que durante parte de la serie se encuentra sin ningún rumbo, tiene una visión un poco más realista de la vida y es el pilar de sensatez (en la mayoría de las veces) de la serie. Sus ganas de triunfar y lograr una estabilidad en su vida lo hace acercarse a su primo Paper Boi, teniendo muchos conflictos a lo largo de la serie, pero que poco a poco va a aprendiendo a sobrellevar todos los golpes que le da la vida. Es sin duda otro de los personajes por el que pasa momentos más surrealistas de la serie (el primero es Darius) y a la vez, también es el personaje que más momentos “injustos” pasa en varios episodios a lo largo de las 4 temporadas.
Darius, el cual para mi es el mejor personaje de la serie, es el representante de los momentos más surrealistas de la serie, es un personaje que desborda excentricidad desde el primer momento que aparece en pantalla, un personaje bastante carismático, el cual tiene una visión del mundo mucho más espiritual y es el que sin duda tiene los momentos más graciosos de la serie. Detrás de esa excentricidad está un personaje que aunque no lo parezca tiene los pies bien puestos sobre la tierra, con ideas y pensamientos que en principio pudieran sonar un sin sentido, pero que tiene un grado de profundidad bastante acertado según la situación en la que se encuentre tanto él solo, como con sus amigos.
Atlanta se enfoca no solamente en el humor absurdo, el racismo o el rap, sino que también por medio de muchos episodios logra crear una crítica global de varios aspectos que una persona afroamericana puede vivir en su sociedad. Siempre destacando los grandes momentos absurdos de la serie y con momentos que aunque surrealistas, tienen un sentido lógico dentro de este universo.
