Big Trouble in Little China is a film where the creative fantasy of its director reigns, making the characters go from an ordinary situation to a strange Chinese mystical world where the only limit is the artistic power of creativity, it borders on the absurd but when done well it is a hilarious product, just look at the miniature, that is art, it is full of colors, situations, images that invite you to enter this world and fall into their brilliant problems.

The beginning is the only normal thing in the film, the rest is totally out of the parameters and lacks logic which is great because I want to see that, once the plot begins to get out of control, is when we enter fully into the film and does not call attention to the real, what captivates is the surreal.

The way the characters are presented has a unique personality, they have energy, it is a charged film, it is a locomotive that as a spectator runs over you and you enjoy it, you just want more and more of everything, heroes and villains.

I remember as a child when I saw the film that the villains are spectacular and after thirty years I see that it not only impacted me because it is a cult work, how can it not be if it is massive the way it handles that millennial Asian topic, all the sculptures, the scenery, the camera approaches to enhance even more each character while we get to know the story.

By impacting a whole generation, it remains in their culture because it would later inspire the birth of characters for video games, it is nice to see how the different media are mixed to give birth to new works because everything has a reference, an inspiration.

If the film has any weakness is that its story is out of itself, it is a madness with legs but at the same time this that could be a weakness in any other film is what is exploited in this one because given a madness, it is presented to the viewer with the greatest of styles.

This is missing lately in the world of cinema, I notice the tendency is to capture the real but a film is imagination, I enjoy more to see what is in the imagination of each team and in this John Carpenter plus the rest of the team as makeup, scenery, costumes, placed his soul and visual imaginative to the maximum and this we as viewers perceive it.

One aspect to highlight is the variety of characters, it is a chaotic adventure in which we will see weapons that defines the Americans, martial arts that defines the Asians and the power of the elements that defines the creativity of the film but each character has personality, you respect them visually, especially the villains but on the heroes side too, there is arrogance, there is friendship, there is wisdom, there is beauty in those green eyes, I can only think of praise for the film.

I want to rescue this film and give it a score of 9.5 out of 10 because it shows that to capture a story you don't need reality, logic or philosophy, this film shows that the power of a story is in the imagination and how you execute those images that are only in your mind to a camera with creative approaches and images to magnify a character and its environment thus making it stay in the minds of viewers for decades, this is Big Trouble in Little China.

The Sorcerer Lo Pan, Source of Image

The review continues with the spoilers area to comment on those characters that I liked the most because the whole film is spectacular.

The characters that amazed me are THE THREE STORMS Lightning, Rain and Thunder, that moment when they appear is sublime, is tattooed in my cerebral cortex as if I had seen the film yesterday and I saw it decades ago because the names, style, lightning is pure fantasy, the physical structure accompanied by mystical costumes along with hats is genius, the best in the film.

I would like to mention that David Lo Pan and the three storms give inspiration to two Mortal Kombat characters that are the sorcerer and the God of thunder, how not to do it, that's where they come from, their creators were impressed as I was in those times and that's why their essence in them. If the sorcerer Lo Pan in the story aspect wants to be mortal I don't know why but it serves as an excuse to kill him in a way out of nowhere, I admit I didn't like it very much, it's the only thing that made me take points away from the story and of course without their leader it's logical that the three storms lose sense.

Despite the latter, I fight for these three storms, the man who explodes is a generational gif, we will die and future generations will see the gif I leave below, I also highlight the use of special effects with these three characters, the lightning I see them today and nostalgia dominates me, they look dominant, they generate respect, even today I see powerful characters and these boys is what I liked most of the film.

The plot with the green-eyed girls I like, it gives beauty to the story and when they place the two of them convulsing in front of the camera with their eyes gone, pure visual pleasure, their heavy makeup represents what the film is, the abundant, the exaggerated, I like them and I would have liked Miao Yin to weigh more but I still enjoyed the plot with her and Gracie Law together on screen.

The rest are characters imagination, the monster that follows in Jack Burton's truck, the being that represents the visual of Lo Pan and only floats with a bunch of eyes, is super strange both but they are there for visual enjoyment and wow they give it because their appearances are very funny.

I dedicate each and every one of my posts and videos to my little dog named princess we called her chiquito who is no longer with us but from heaven she will see that her existence IS valuable and the most beautiful thing that will ever exist in my heart and soul.

  2. 'Big Trouble in Little China' by John Carpenter Review: Great filmmaking, mediocre story@namiks1182d

    Screenshot_2023-04-04-04-04-32-837_org.videolan.vlc.png

I have been a bit fan of John Carpenter for many years now. A filmmaker that I feel really allowed the blockbuster idea to flourish going into the 80s. His films are full of filmmaking soul ranging from the use of wide, cinematic anamorphic lenses to a reliance on practical effects in costume, makeup, and set design. His films cemented in history mostly due to his entries within the horror and thriller genres. Creating some of the biggest, most loved films in the west. A filmmaker that is known for his lower budget look, but never for low budget quality. I always assumed I had seen John Carpenter's library, and not just once! I can't recall how many times I've seen The Fog by now. And with his frequent collaborator Kurt Russell, his most famous works had sort of established an expected theme and idea from fans. However, browsing through Disney+, I realised I had never seen Big Trouble in Little China, and funnily I had no idea it was made by John Carpenter while watching it; though I noticed many Carpenter styles that had me curious as to who had made it. That Google search of course led to no surprises once his name popped up.

Big Trouble in Little China was a fun experience. Full of Carpenter's style but with some surprising differences. It very much felt like a film of its era, not just due to the special effects or the sound effects, but the story and magical themes that are found within it. Aspects of fantasy mix with the classic Kurt Russell action and blend together to creative something quite unique, especially given its location and characters; most notably the fact that our protagonist is merely an everyday truck driver, a regular citizen and nobody particularly special, caught up in a crazed world and culture far from all he knows. An accurate representation of the average protagonist thrown into mystery and exploration. This grittier nature is one that you come to expect with a film by Carpenter. Though the worst part of the film was by far when my Internet went down and never returned! Leading to me eating up my phone data to finish the film!

    Big Trouble in Little China

    vlc_20230404_040732.jpg

A main theme that I absolutely love about John Carpenter's films is the simplicity in their narratives. They surround the simple idea of ancient curses and magic running rampant and impacting small civilisations and communities. These people getting all caught up in these fantasy elements are often regular people, everyday workers and family members, nobody particularly special. These characters are rarely ones of supreme strength, unless we bring in Kurt Russell. Which is a fun take on things given Carpenter's two styles of all-out action and deep fantasy combine into one here in Big Trouble in Little China. Our truck driver meeting up with a friend gets caught up in the idea of saving his friend's girlfriend from a gang in Chinatown, San Fransisco. The two enter the location, surrounded by gang wars and bullets raining. And on goes an adventure that opens up into something completely unexpected: an ancient sorcerer lives within the location, cursed unless they can come across a woman with green eyes to marry. To which the curse would finally be lifted.

While the story is simple, it is by far the filmmaking that makes this film shine. The ways in which the guns sound, their fun 80s sound effects. Alongside the synth music that plays and provides ambience to the strange world these characters now find themselves within, as they ascend deeper underground in search for the woman to bring her back to safety. Match this with the very blue, filmic visuals that come from shooting on 35mm film stock and anaerobic lenses and the film is oozing with soul. It really pulls you into this mystical, ancient Chinese world full of magic and curses. Surprisingly, the film failed at the theatres and never really managed to take off, only really becoming of interest to existing and future fans of John Carpenter and Kurt Russell. And while it's a big surprise that the film failed, I can see some elements as to why this may have happened. For one, the film is quite long, especially for a lower budget John Carpenter film. To add to this is the film's narrative which does a really seem a bit confusing in parts as the characters roam back and forth throughout the environment. Carpenter is also known for his highs stakes films in which main characters die off, and this doesn't really happen. I can see ecisgig fans and critics finding some of these moments in the film a bit lackluster, as it rarely feels like anyone is actually in any danger.

Which is disappointing to state given the film has some very good special effects in the magic side of things. As well as costume design; the film is famous mostly for a particular scene in which a head expands and blows up. I had no idea it was from this film, and that was quite the surprise to see suddenly appear. And being a Carpenter attempt at a blockbuster, it does seem like it suffers from some teething problems. Something that is to be expected given his best works come from ones that seem cheap. More relaxed and with less time to go through everything. With this said, I still very much enjoyed the film. It dragged on a bit, but I kept finding myself appreciating something different. All falling back to the love of filmmaking and the dedication that went into creating a style and pursuing a constant building of atmosphere. I love Carpenter's use of music, sound, and even the construction of the sets. There's something incredibly immersive about the backgrounds, locations in dense smog/fog and with really harsh tones of lighting. Film stock of course making these colours warmer, more comforting to the eye. All alongside the anamorphic lenses which widen the frame and give us plenty of the environment and prop design to appreciate.

It is far from John Carpenter's best work. But it's sometbing I still enjoyed and had me feeling that itch to check out his films again for another run through his incredible library. And Just Russell's performance is incredibly strong here in Big Trouble in Little China, one of his strongest performances that I have seen. Less of the stiff 80s theatre acting and more a serious portrayal with fluidity. I think it will be a long time until I watch this film again, but I wouldn't say I hated it at all. The story is okay, but as you can tell; it's the filmmaking that is the highlight here. And even if it isn't one of his best films, there's nothing quite like it with that Carpenter touch. Even to this day nothing quite comes close. A style that truly belongs to him.

  3. Film Review: Big Trouble in Little China (1986)@drax1587d

    (source: tmdb.org)

Passage of time and tendency to view past through rose-tinted glasses can do interesting things to reputation of certain films. When Big Trouble in Little China, fantasy action comedy directed by John Carpenter, originally appeared in cinema, it turned out to be box office and critical failure. Yet, today it is widely considered to be among the most beloved films of its era.

Protagonist, played by Kurt Russell, is Jack Burton, truck driver who arrives to San Francisco to visit his best friend Wang Chi (played by Dennis Dun). He accompanies him to the airport where Wang Chi is to greet his fiancée, green-eyed Miao Yin (played by Suzee Pai). There she gets kidnapped by members of Chinatown street gang and Jack decides to help his friend bring her back. In Chinatown Jack and Wang Chi witness spectacular street battle between two gangs, which is joined by three men with apparently supernatural powers. Person behind that is Joseph Lo Pan (played by James Hong), Chinatown businessman who is actually ancient Chinese wizard suffering from millennia-old curse. Jack and Wang Chi, with the help of lawyer Gracie Law (played by Kim Cattral) and sorcerer Egg Shen (played by Victor Wong), go to the Chinatown underground to locate Miao Yin and there they would encounter many dangers.

By mid 1980s John Carpenter has already built reputation of a master of horror and science fiction genres. He was also known to dabble into different genres and he had dreamed of making a martial arts film. Big Trouble in Little China was one such opportunity, as well as way to show that he could handle comedy. He again showed great directorial skills, putting unusually high budget to good use. But his greatest asset was old associate Kurt Russell who played rather unusual main character. On surface, he looks like typical 1980s action hero, with lot of machismo, which Russell emphasises by basing his character’s speech and mannerisms on John Wayne. However, it soon becomes obvious that Jack Burton is not only unusual action hero, but he is actually not action hero at all. He proves to be very inept and actually source of more comedy than action. The real hero is Wang Chi, who proves to efficient protagonist, very much thanks to Dennis Dun who has good chemistry with Russell. Film also benefits from special effects by Richard Edlund which, for the most part, look impressive even when today’s standards are taken into account. Even the regular action, based on Asian martial arts films, looks very good.

Film’s main problem is the script. Originally written as combination of western and martial arts film by Gary Goldman and David Z. Weinsten (and later script-doctored into contemporary setting by W. D. Richter), it has too many characters, sometimes putting too much exposition and demanding too much from the cast. Good example is Kim Cattrall in the role of Jack’s obligatory love interest; while attractive, she lacks chemistry with Russell. Dependable character actor James Hong is great in the role of arch-villain, just as Victor Wong is good as his rival. Another flaw is music by John Carpenter; while his soundtracks worked wonderfully in previous films, here use of synthesisers makes Big Trouble in Little China sound cheaper than it actually is, and the theme song, like in many 1980s action films, is better. Although far from reputation created by fans that had created cult status in subsequent decades, this film is very entertaining and could be recommended even to the audience that cares little about 1980s nostalgia.

  4. Big Trouble In Little China (1986) and... MacGyver (1985-1992)@lionsuit3053d

    big_trouble_quoteimg.jpg

Last night I was trying to explain the tone of Big Trouble in Little China to a friend. Forget it, just play it.

    big-trouble-in-little-china-e1433206931826.jpg

We're not to the second act, when she points out the similarities between Big Trouble's Jack Burton and Angus MacGyver himself. I might have been blind to it as MacGyver was a key favorite character of my youth (and non youth) years.

    CBS_MACGYVER_079_CONTENT_CIAN_1280x720_323929667771_390504_640x360.jpg

Big Trouble I had only seen for the first time maybe a year ago, so it was still fresh, but I had responded to it strongly--the fun, the balance of absurdity to not, the ideas within, its respect for the right things, realism and magical.

    250px-MacGyver_season_5_DVD.png

Regardless, these two characters mirror each other in these ways. It goes beyond the look (there are some stylistic similarities, sure) and into the attitude of the character, his reality, his "everyman-ness" maybe.

    _20180217_223203.JPG

He is the kind of guy who might shake his hand after punching out a bad guy (who deserved it). Maybe it's right there in the parenthetical; he has a sense of justice about him and has a respect/lack of respect for the right things.

    download.jpg

Reminds me of Raymond Chandler's detective hero: "..a man fit for adventure. If there were enough like him, the world would be a very safe place to live in, without becoming too dull to be worth living in."

Regardless, each now has a spot in the hardcopy movie/tv collection.

Cheers and power to you and to great characters, great tone, and great storytelling.

  5. Insomniac Film Festival #42: Big Trouble in Little China@rvgenaille3206d

    image -via IMDb.com

Kurt Russell is Jack Burton in John Carpenter's awesome B-movie, Big Trouble in Little China, from 1986. Jack takes his friend Wang to pick up his fiancée from the airport and ends up fighting the forces of evil as said fiancée is kidnapped by the supernatural, immortal Lo Pan, played by James Hong. Victor Wong is bus driver/ sorcerer Egg Shen and Kim Cattrall is Gracie Law in this one.

This movie is hilarious and glorious and terrible and satisfyingly entertaining. The movie zips along too fast for you to really understand what is going on, logic-wise, but that's okay because the film doesn't take it self seriously and doesn't expect you to either. The cast are having a lot of fun, you can tell, and they are overacting and chewing scenery like you wouldn't believe.

It's a lot of fun and mostly avoids negative stereotyping unless you count the overconfident white man.

It's a lot of fun, lots of action, check it out, it's worth a viewing.
