I have adopted a certain routine on occasions when I have had a few stressful days and want to relax. I choose a movie that I have seen before, even if it was many years ago, with the intention of finding out if it is still a good movie or if, over time, it has lost what makes it special and all that remains is a touch of nostalgia in my memory. So, without further ado, join me in this new review of “Bolt.”

This animated film, released on November 21, 2008, is an American production that belongs to the genres of animation, comedy, adventure, and action. The plot revolves around our canine protagonist named Bolt, who is a successful star on his television series, but Bolt is unaware that it is all fake. For him, everything that happens in the series is real: his powers, the danger, his heroic demeanor, and his enemies are all real. But everything gets complicated when, due to a series of accidents, he is sent to New York City, where he will try to do the impossible to return to his beloved Penny, gradually discovering the truth.

What happens in the movie?

Let's talk a little about what happens in the movie. We find ourselves in a pet store, where we meet our protagonist Bolt, a small but very brave puppy. Here he is adopted by a little girl named Penny. Five years later, the setting and tone of the movie change a bit; everything is more opaque and with cooler tones. Penny receives a call from her father, who warns her of danger and informs her that he has altered Bolt to give him superpowers to protect her. This leads us to different action scenes, where Penny and Bolt try to find Penny's father, but in the process they escape from their enemies.

This is how we are shown Bolt's different powers/abilities: super strength, super bark, his almost indestructible body, super speed, and laser beams from his eyes. Bolt and Penny manage to escape from the villains, and when everything seems to be fine, we discover that it was all fake; they are on a film set. so everything we just saw is the recording of an episode of a Bolt series, which the production company reviews and realizes that a microphone appears in the recording, which is unforgivable. Thus, we learn that Bolt is unaware that everything is fake; he truly believes he is a superdog who always saves his beloved owner Penny.

The production company wants something different; the Bolt series is very predictable. the villains attack, Bolt and Penny escape and end up outwitting everyone. So, for the next episode, they change it and Penny is kidnapped. Before Bolt can do anything, he is stopped and returned to his trailer on the set, which makes him restless and eager to escape to find Penny, as in his mind she has been kidnapped and needs his help. Bolt manages to escape from the trailer, runs at high speed through the set, and accidentally ends up being packed up and sent to New York City. Once there, he will look for a way to return to Penny and save her from the villains.

My opinion about the movie

From this point on, I will only talk about my opinion of the film without mentioning any spoilers, so you can read it without any problems. Starting with the story, in most films related to dogs, I must say that they end up being very emotional, but in this case, the action is what stands out most. From the perspective of a dog who truly believes he is a superdog, everything becomes more striking. The way he behaves pushes him into very curious situations, where each character adds or subtracts a little more to this idea he has of himself, which is why the story leads us to an introspection into the canine's mind.

A protagonist is always the main focus of a story, but when there are no other interesting characters, it ends up faltering a bit. This does not happen in this film. As it progresses, characters are added, either to follow the main plot or just as spontaneous appearances, but they add a lot to the story, either from a comedic perspective (which helps a lot in making the film so enjoyable) or from the narrative perspective, so each character has their own touch that makes them stand out without taking away from our beloved Bolt.

The comedy in the film is undoubtedly what I love most. Obviously, it is a film aimed at a child audience, as many animated films are, but there are some that have the particularity of appealing to all audiences, and I consider this to be one of them. The humor used captivates everyone, ranging from silly humor to intelligent humor, so it has different nuances with which you can identify and laugh a lot. From the moment I started watching the film, I couldn't stop laughing. It's an excellent comedy for a boring day.

At the beginning, I mentioned nostalgia, and honestly, this time, that's not what made me think it was an excellent movie. My personal opinion is that this type of movie is what is needed today: a good story, a good soundtrack, charismatic characters, comedy that doesn't need to be exaggerated in any way, natural scenes, beautiful animation (obviously we can't compare a movie from 2008 with one from 2025, but for that year it really is very good animation) and lots of emotions throughout the story, which makes for a great combination for success. Personally, I'm delighted to see it again and it's a movie I would watch more than once.

He adoptado cierta rutina en algunas ocasiones en las cuales cuando han pasado algunos días estresantes y quiero relajarme, elijo alguna película que ya haya visto antes, así haya sido hace muchos años, todo esto con la intención de saber si todavía sigue siendo una buena película o si con el paso del tiempo ha perdido lo que la caracteriza y solo queda este toque de nostalgia en mi recuerdo, así que, sin más que agregar, acompáñenme en esta nueva reseña sobre “Bolt”.

Esta película animada, estrenada el 21 de noviembre del año 2008, es una producción estadounidense que pertenece al género de animación, evidentemente, comedia, aventura y también acción. La trama gira en torno a nuestro protagonista canino llamado Bolt, quien es una exitosa estrella por su serie de televisión, pero Bolt no es consciente de que todo es falso, para él cada una de las cosas que suceden en la serie es real, sus poderes, el peligro, su heroico semblante y los enemigos son reales. Pero todo se complica cuando, por una serie de accidentes, es enviado a la ciudad de Nueva York, donde intentará hacer lo imposible para regresar con su querida Penny, descubriendo poco a poco la realidad.

¿Qué sucede en la película?

Hablemos un poco de lo que sucede en la película. Nos ubicamos en una tienda de animales, donde conocemos a nuestro protagonista Bolt, un pequeño cachorro bastante valiente. Aquí es adoptado por una pequeña niña llamada Penny. 5 años después, cambia un poco la escenografía y los tonos de la película, todo es más opaco y con tonos fríos. Penny recibe una llamada de su padre, quien le advierte de un peligro y le informa que él alteró a Bolt para darle superpoderes y que la protegiera. Esto nos lleva a diferentes escenas de acción, aquí Penny y Bolt intentan encontrar al padre de Penny, pero en el proceso escapan de los enemigos.

Mi opinión sobre la película

A partir de este punto hablaré solo de mi opinión con respecto a la película sin mencionar ningún spoiler, así que pueden leerlo sin problemas. Empezando por la historia, en la mayoría de películas relacionadas con perros, debo decir que terminan siendo muy emocionales, pero en este caso, la acción es lo que más está presente, desde la perspectiva de un perro que realmente cree que es un superperro todo se hace más llamativo, la forma en que se comporta lo empuja a situaciones muy curiosas, donde según cada personaje va sumando o restando un poco más a esta idea que tiene de sí mismo, por lo cual la historia nos lleva a una introspección en la mente del canino.

Un protagonista siempre es el foco principal de una historia, pero cuando no hay otros personajes interesantes este termina flojeando un poco, esto no ocurre en esta película, mientras más avanza, van sumándose personajes, ya sea para seguir la trama principal o solo como apariciones espontáneas, pero que van sumando bastante a la historia, ya sea desde la perspectiva cómica (lo cual ayuda mucho a la película para ser tan disfrutable) o la narrativa de la misma, por lo que cada personaje tiene su toque idea que los hace destacar sin quitarle protagonismo a nuestro querido Bolt.

La comedia que se aprecia en la película sin duda es lo que más me encanta, evidentemente es una película dirigida para un público infantil, muchas de las películas animadas son así, pero hay algunas que tienen la particularidad de agradar a todo el público y esta considero que es una de ellas, el humor que se maneja atrapa a cualquiera, va desde un humor tonto, hasta un humor inteligente, por lo cual tiene distintos matices con los cuales te puedes terminar identificando y soltando muchas risas, yo desde que empecé con la película no paré de reír, es una excelente comedia para un día aburrido.

Al principio les mencionaba sobre la nostalgia y honestamente en esta ocasión no es eso lo que me hacía pensar que era una excelente película, mi pensamiento personal es que, este tipo de películas es lo que hace falta actualmente, una buena historia, un buen soundtrack, personajes carismáticos, comedia que no necesita ser exagerada en ningún aspecto, naturalidad en las escenas, una linda animación (evidentemente no podemos comparar una película del 2008 con una del 2025, pero para ese año realmente es una muy buena animación) y muchas emociones en el trascurso de la historia, lo cual hace una combinación para un gran éxito, a lo que personalmente estoy encantado de ver nuevamente y es una película que repetiría en más de una ocasión.

Hello, movie hivers! Welcome to the third part of the Movies That Made My Childhood Very Happy section, I have to tell you that this week I had a great time watching Disney's "Bolt". I love this section because when I'm overwhelmed with mystery, romance, books, action or just plain stressed out I always turn to animated movies, so it's like the little piece of the week that makes me very happy.
¡Hola, hivers del cine! Bienvenidos a la tercera parte de la sección Películas Que Hicieron Mi Infancia Muy Feliz, tengo que decirles que esta semana lo pasé muy bien viendo “Bolt” de Disney. Amo esta sección porque cuando estoy abrumada de misterio, romance, libros, acción o sencillamente estresada siempre recurro a las películas animadas, entonces es como el pedacito de la semana que me hace muy feliz.

First, Rhino. I know the movie is called Bolt, but Rhino made the whole movie hilarious, it takes another rhythm after he appears, because yes, it's a pretty simple comedy but the charisma that Jesus Guzman adds to the Latin dub is great. And I think that's what I like the most about Bolt, the Latin dubbing. There are different accents and styles, each character speaks differently and it feels very close to the Spanish-speaking viewer. It's not like an animated TV series where everyone speaks in neutral and I like that.

Sé que la película se llama Bolt, pero es que Rhino me hizo toda la película divertidísima, coge otro ritmo después de que él aparece, porque sí, es una comedia bastante sencilla pero el carisma que Jesús Guzmán le añade al doblaje latino es buenísimo. Y creo que es lo que más me gusta de Bolt, el doblaje latino. Hay diversos acentos y estilos, cada personaje habla diferente y sé siente muy cercano al espectador hispanohablante. No es como una serie animada de televisión en la que todos hablan en neutro y eso me gusta.

Bolt is a pretty simple movie, you know where it's going to end, but that doesn't stop you from enjoying a very funny movie, plus all the unreal situations are there being aware of it, they don't try to be more than what they are or present you with a secret world. Disney knows they are making a story full of imagination and let you have a good time with it.

How is it possible that fifteen years after its release I was thrilled with Super Bark and singing "Barking At The Moon"? I think Bolt is that kind of movie that you never felt iconic but when you see it you feel a nice nostalgia, at least that's how I felt.

For my inner child, Bolt is a 10/10 but the point of this section is to be objective with movies from my childhood, so I have to give it 7.5/10.

Welcome Hivers to this new post, this week in 7th Art & More, we will be talking about Stray Animals, and a movie that tells us a little of what happens to animals on the street, is Bolt: a dog out of series. Esta película estrenada en 2008, nos dejó con ganas de más aventuras de este perro que creía que su vida era una serie de televisión, aquí te cuento un poco más de esta película.

Bolt, is an American shepherd, who was adopted when he was a puppy, by a girl with his father, and soon his adventures begin. His father is a scientist who alters the dog's genetics and gives him superpowers, but when he is kidnapped, his daughter Penny and Bolt have to save him and stop Dr. Calico's plans.

This is a movie that I like to watch and I really enjoyed its songs, especially the one that plays in the background when they are traveling. It is a very nice movie to reflect on, to what extent our reality is clouded by what we have been taught, as well as what others show us. It's a very nice movie, which I enjoy quite a bit, to be honest.

Esta es una película que me gusta ver y de la cual disfrutó mucho sus canciones, sobre todo la que suena de fondo cuando están viajando. Es una película muy bonita para reflexionar, hasta que punto nuestra realidad está nublada por lo que nos han enseñado, así como también por lo que otros nos muestran. Es una película muy bonita, que disfruto bastante, para ser honesta.

My favorite part of the movie is when Bolt tries to use his superpowers and it doesn't work for him. I think it's one of the best parts we are presented with in this adventure, especially when we see at the beginning how he does it on TV hahaha. That's the magic of movies.
Mi parte favorita de la película es cuando Bolt intenta usar sus superpoderes y no le funciona. Creo que es una de las mejores partes que se nos presentan en esta aventura, sobre todo cuando vemos al principio como lo hace en televisión jajaja. Esa es la magia del cine.

With the increasing amount of good-quality films with animal characters available, I knew this one wasn't going to be easy. We have many fun characters in the Shrek movies that could be worthy to win this contest.

One of my favorite characters is the Panda in Kung-fu Panda. His character went through so much and is a real contender. But in the end, I went for Bolt, a much under-rated Disney movie from 2008.

Bolt is the lovable dog in the movie that bears his name. He gets separated from his loving co-star Penny and gets into some adventures trying to get re-united with her.

Why I really like Bolt and in fact the film is that it raises a very prevalent topic in modern times and has not been covered so much in films recently (you may see it in some old Marvel comics if you google it). This is the fourth wall.

What is the fourth wall you may ask?

Some of you movie buffs may know what I'm talking about. But it is basically, paraphrased from wikipedia an invisible line that separates the actors from the audience.

Although the film doesn't break through the fourth wall directly, you get to see Bolt thinking that his Hollywood reality is real and we, the real audience and the characters in the film know this and we want Bolt to break through this wall in the film and realise the objective reality.

You start off really attaching yourself to Bolt and cheering him on and wanting his Hollywood reality to be true. And in a way, he does achieve the mind over matter power. Similar to Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story, but here it plays out for much longer in Bolt.

This relates to me in modern life in that there is a thin line between fiction and reality and the powerful role that TV plays in everyone's lives. When you create content, you know yourself you are trying to spin or portray a certain narrative or story and we cannot ever give an objective truth - just an interpretation.

► My favourite scene

My favorite scene in the film is when Bolt meets his greatest fan who re-affirms Bolt's reality as a dog with superpowers. Even while another character in the film is challenging his character's fictionality and therefore trying to break Bolt back into the real world. It is a hilarious example of animated cognitive dissonance in action.

The film is a great watch and there are many great scenes where Bolt attempts to use his superpowers and you are rooting for him but know how it will end. It is both funny and tragic at the same time.

This is why Bolt and this film really left an impression on me.

Realmente me sentí muy identificada con la protagonista con su gran amor por Bolt y con ese enorme vacío que sentía, además de todo lo que sufrió, no hay nada mejor que saber que nuestras mascotas están bien y muchas veces tenemos que hacer grandes sacrificios por ellas porque las amamos.

Hay que tener mucho valor para no perder la verdadera esencia de lo que uno es y más cuando llegan los momentos difíciles, Bolt es una película que me demuestra que lo que soy y lo que creo de mí misma es muy importante, esto es decisivo para muchas circunstancias, ya que tener una buena idea y una buena imagen de nosotros mismos mejora nuestra autoestima, y nos da esa fuerza, para caminar por el mundo y salir adelante.

Watching this movie I think a lot about my dog, and although my little wolf is a very old dog I love him and just like Penny I can't imagine my life without him, and I have been willing to do many things to improve his health since the day we rescued him. I really felt very identified with the main character with her great love for Bolt and with that huge emptiness she felt, besides everything she suffered, there is nothing better than knowing that our pets are well and many times we have to make great sacrifices for them because we love them.

You have to have a lot of courage not to lose the true essence of who you are and more when difficult times come, Bolt is a movie that shows me that what I am and what I believe about myself is very important, this is decisive for many circumstances, since having a good idea and a good image of ourselves improves our self-esteem, and gives us that strength, to walk through the world and get ahead.

Muchos libros de autoayuda hablan de la gran importancia de creer en nosotros mismos para alcanzar el éxito, y creer en nosotros mismos no implica necesariamente tener superpoderes o superfuerzas como en el caso de Bolt. Creer en nosotros mismos implica aceptarnos y querernos como realmente somos, y a partir de ahí hacer los ajustes necesarios con humildad para alcanzar nuestras metas y lo más importante saber de qué somos capaces.

De nada sirve sentirnos orgullosos de algo que no somos, de una simple fachada o de una imagen equivocada de nuestra personalidad y es ahí donde debemos poner los límites para no caer en el narcisismo, ya que se trata de creer en nosotros mismos, pero con humildad, como lo hizo Bolt, aceptando sus debilidades y potenciando sus fortalezas con entusiasmo. En una escena Bolt tuvo que aprender a girar la cabeza, y de paso enseñado por unas palomas, esto me enseña que posiblemente en muchas ocasiones me toque aprender muchas cosas y tomar consejos de personas, que quizás a simple vista parecen no saber, es ahí donde la humildad me va ayudar.

Many self-help books talk about the great importance of believing in ourselves to achieve success, and believing in ourselves does not necessarily imply having superpowers or super strengths as in Bolt's case. Believing in ourselves implies accepting and loving ourselves as we really are, and from there make the necessary adjustments with humility to achieve our goals and most importantly to know what we are capable of.

It is useless to feel proud of something we are not, of a simple facade or of a mistaken image of our personality and that is where we must set the limits so as not to fall into narcissism, since it is about believing in ourselves, but with humility, as Bolt did, accepting his weaknesses and enhancing his strengths with enthusiasm. In a scene Bolt had to learn to turn his head, and in passing taught by some pigeons, this teaches me that possibly on many occasions I will have to learn many things and take advice from people, who perhaps at first glance do not seem to know, that is where humility will help me.

Considero que el ser humano debe quitarse esa falsa venda de creerse mejor o superior a los demás, la vida se trata de creer en ti mismo, creer que te has superado, creer que puedes lograr algo pero nunca creerte mejor que nadie, ese seria un grave error, que posiblemente termine haciéndonos mucho daño.

En otro marco de circunstancias puede ocurrir que muchas veces se acerquen a nosotros personas malintencionadas que quizás nos hagan dudar de lo que realmente somos o de lo que realmente hay en nosotros y ahí es donde tenemos que aferrarnos a esa convicción de ser lo que realmente somos, y lo haremos no porque los demás lo crean o lo esperen, sino porque nosotros lo creemos y lo necesitamos.

Life is about believing in yourself, believing that you have surpassed yourself, believing that you can achieve something but never believing that you are better than anyone else, that would be a serious mistake, which could possibly end up doing us a lot of harm.

In other circumstances it may happen that many times we are approached by malicious people who may make us doubt what we really are or what is really in us and that is where we have to hold on to that conviction of being what we really are, and we will do it not because others believe it or expect it, but because we believe it and we need it.

Pero este autoconocimiento de lo que realmente soy y no dejarme cambiar por la circunstancia del mundo también requiere de mucha valentía y humildad, a veces en el mundo encontramos personas que nos hacen daño, pero eso no debe hacernos cambiar, a veces encontramos personas que nos engañan, pero no debemos dejar de confiar, que el mundo no nos moldee y si en nuestro corazón hay valentía y amor, eso florecerá.

But this self-knowledge of what I really am and not letting myself be changed by the circumstances of the world also requires a lot of courage and humility, sometimes in the world we find people who hurt us, but that should not make us change, sometimes we find people who deceive us, but we must not stop trusting, that the world does not mold us and if in our heart there is courage and love, it will flourish.

Bolt y Penny también nos enseñan que, aunque la fama y el dinero es lo que mueve y motiva a muchos hay cosas que valen mucho más, como el valor de la verdadera amistad, y por supuesto la tranquilidad.

Bolt and Penny also teach us that, although fame and money is what moves and motivates many, there are things that are worth much more, such as the value of true friendship, and of course peace of mind.

This Disney production has the feel very much and look of “The Incredibles” but omits adult jokes and small smart details (which animation audiences relish) in the general telling of the story.

In comparison to Disney/Pixar animations (Meet The Robinsons, Ratatouille, Wall-E, Cars) “Bolt” does not stand up to the razzle-dazzle and specificity of each of the mentioned movies. Bottom line, it does not stand out as an exciting story.

With “Wall-E”, we were awed by the beeps and toots of the robots, and in “Cars” we were amazed by the number of flashes that could go off in a crowd-filled race car stadium and that Porsche, but in “Bolt” we only had a superhero dog.

And to top it all off, his powers aren’t even real! There was no real purpose or focus on the story. Sure, it seems to portray that even when without superpowers, you can fight evil and do good and all that, but at the end of the movie, the message comes out as flat and uninteresting.

There are some potential tearjerker moments but not enough to tip the audience over to like the film. I applaud the animators and the amount of time spent sweating over the details of the film (spot the pigeons cocking their head, totally unreal!), but the end product didn’t work for me.

The only riveting part of the movie was the first five minutes. From then on, it was a long and stretched out ride to the bottom of the hill, peppered only by a few forced laughs far and in between.
