Plot
On Christmas Eve, a boy stays up late to see Santa Claus. He doubts whether or not he really exists, which leads him to investigate the various cases in the news of children who have discovered that their parents are actually the ones leaving them presents and not the bearded giant dressed in red. This kid seems to be smart, as his opinion about Christmas and the chances of Santa Claus traveling around the world in just one night to deliver presents to children is a virtual impossibility. That night, at five minutes before 12 o'clock, he sees an express train pass in front of his house, gets out and is invited by the conductor who greets him. At first, he refuses to get on, but when the train starts moving, the boy changes his mind and gets on. His trip on this "Polar Express" will be something he will never forget.

For a 3D motion-capture animated film adaptation of a simple children's Christmas story, this movie is one of the best I've seen in terms of production, script, character development and super exciting scenery. I know, I've said many times before that when it comes to 3D animation I'm not a fan, to be honest. I rather hate to confuse such animation as if I were watching a video game, but oh well. In the case of these latest Christmas movies that I have been bringing you, they share the work of one of the best directors that the world of cinema has brought us. His work on the film I told you about earlier called "A Christmas Carol" is some of the best he has personally done in terms of the use of such motion capture animation. This film, released several years earlier, does have its obvious visual flaws, but in terms of everything else and how contemporary and nostalgic its story is, it gets the best score I can offer it, hands down.

Para ser una adaptación cinematográfica animada en 3D y con captura de movimiento de un simple cuento infantil navideño, esta película es de las mejores que he visto tanto a nivel de producción como también en cuanto a guión, desarrollo de personajes y escenarios súper emocionantes. Lo sé, ya dije muchas veces atrás que en cuanto a lo que se refiere a animación en 3D no soy un fanático, la verdad. Más bien detesto confundir dicha animación como si estuviera viendo un videojuego, pero bueno. En el caso de estas últimas películas navideñas de las cuales les he estado trayendo, comparten el trabajo de uno de los mejores directores que el mundo del cine nos ha traído. Su trabajo en la película que les hablé anteriormente llamada “A Christmas Carol” es de lo mejor que, personalmente, ha realizado en cuanto al uso de dicha animación con captura de movimiento. Esta película, lanzada varios años antes, sí que tiene sus evidentes defectos visuales, pero en cuanto a lo demás y a lo contemporáneo y nostálgico que es su historia, se lleva la mejor puntuación que le puedo ofrecer, sin duda alguna.

After the events I mentioned above, our adventurous protagonist sees that he is not the only boy on the Polar Express. He decides to hook up with a girl who has been watching him since he got on, clearly a fervent believer in Christmas. The boy, despite being on a train at almost midnight heading to the North Pole, still does not believe, having that doubt in mind, faces various difficulties on the same train that are solved or faced in a somewhat "magical" way. It is this magic that is present throughout the film and that interconnects everything that happens on the train and at the end of their journey that leads them to the grand finale.
Throughout this entire grand Christmas journey and clearly emotionally, I am very struck by the way in which everything that happens serves as tangible or evident proof of what our protagonist thinks may or may not be real. The way in which all the details we see in this film make us think from the very beginning that everything that happens is just a dream and not reality is somewhat intriguing. But, it is that same doubt, a doubt that is also raised by our protagonist, that we are left at the end for each of us to answer in our own words. This story is, indeed, a clear example of the valuable lesson of "never stop believing". Something that, depending on circumstances, age or whatever else, we do and stop believing in that which we do not see but which we know is real... or not. This way of playing with the viewer's mind is one of those details that make this film special, without a doubt.

Hablemos primero de su historia, la cual gira en torno a un chico que no sabemos nunca su nombre, pero que lo reconocemos al ser ese chico que posee una duda acerca de creer o no creer en Papá Noel. Esta es una duda que se plantea y se desarrolla, a la vez que se le da respuesta al final en esta película. Luego de los acontecimientos que ya les mencioné arriba, nuestro aventurero protagonista ve que no es el único niño que está en el Expreso Polar. Este decide relacionarse con una chica que lo ha estado mirando desde que subió, siendo esta claramente una creyente ferviente de la navidad. El niño, a pesar de estar en un tren a casi medianoche en dirección al Polo Norte, sigue sin creer, teniendo esa duda en mente, afronta diversas dificultades en el mismo tren que son resueltos o afrontados de una manera un tanto “mágica”. Es dicha magia que se presencia a lo largo de la película y que interconecta todo lo que sucede en el tren y al final de su viaje lo que los lleva a ese gran final.
A lo largo de toda esta gran travesía navideña y claramente emocionalmente, me llama mucho la atención la forma en la que todo lo que sucede sirve como una prueba tangible o evidente de lo que nuestro protagonista piensa que puede o no puede ser real. La forma en la que todos los detalles que vemos en esta película nos hacen pensar desde un principio que todo lo que sucede es solo un sueño y no la realidad es algo intrigante. Pero, es esa misma duda, duda que también se plantea nuestro protagonista, lo que nos dejarán al final para que cada uno de nosotros la respondamos con nuestras propias palabras. Esta historia es, en efecto, un ejemplo claro de la valiosa lección de “no dejar de creer”. Algo que, dependiendo de las circunstancias, la edad o cualquier otra cosa, hacemos y dejamos de creer en eso que no vemos pero que sabemos que es real… o no. Another thing that has also fascinated me about this film is the perfect blend of fantasy and adventure, genres that for many may be normal to see in a Christmas movie, but that this particular film actually demonstrates in a unique way, as if it were a roller coaster (and literally the journey of the Polar Express can be seen as a roller coaster in certain moments of the film). The variety of scenarios and moments it has where at first we are in awe of the view and the visual details to then experience a level of joy or euphoria with fast and even tense moments to then end with fascinating moments full of magic and a healthy humor is pleasantly amusing. Yes, there is even a scene that literally reminded me of a "Fast and Furious" movie because of the impressive way the train operator handles the train (many who have seen it will know which scene I'm talking about). All in all, this movie is made to keep you entertained, no matter what age or tastes you have.

La variedad de escenarios y momentos que tiene donde al principio nos sentimos maravillados de la vista y los detalles visuales para luego experimentar un nivel de alegría o euforia con momentos rápidos y hasta tensos para luego terminar con momentos fascinantes y repletos de magia y un humor sano es agradablemente divertido. Si, hasta hay una escena que literalmente me hizo recordar a una película de “Rápidos y Furiosos” por la manera tan impresionante de manejar que tiene el que opera el tren (ya muchos que la han visto sabrán qué escena es la que estoy hablando). En sí, esta película está hecha para que no te aburras, sin importar qué edad o gustos tengas.

However, for an early attempt, the visual details that make this film so iconic and distinctive are very, very well preserved. The aerial and panning motion camera effects and styles is something that fascinates me quite a bit about these films. There is also the issue of the visual and sound effects, which are perfect, without so much exaggeration. And finally, the best of all: the beautiful and memorably nostalgic soundtrack of this film. All in all, this Christmas movie is perfect to watch, not only during the holidays, but any time you want to enjoy an incredible adventure.
Personally, I give it a 10/10 rating as far as the fantasy/adventure genre is concerned.

Por último, hablemos del lado técnico de la película, del cual ya he mencionado desde el principio algunas referencias en cuanto a otros trabajos posteriores a éste del mismo director, de los cuales se pueden apreciar el excelente trabajo audiovisual que poseen. Robert Zemeckis es todo un genio al tratarse de animación en 3D con captura de movimiento, pero en esta película tan famosa y exitosa de su repertorio, las críticas e impresiones en cuanto a su trabajo visual es un tanto mixto. Personalmente, si lo comparo con “A Christmas Carol”, evidentemente esta cinta carece mucho en cuanto a detalles, fluidez y textura en cuanto a rostros y expresiones faciales. Sin embargo, para ser de sus primeros intentos, está muy pero muy bien conservado lo que son los detalles visuales que hacen de esta película tan icónica y distintiva. Los efectos y estilos de cámaras en movimiento aéreo y panorámicos es algo que me fascina bastante de estas películas. También está el tema de los efectos visuales y de sonido, los cuales son perfectos, sin tanta exageración. Y para finalizar, lo mejor de todo: la banda sonora tan hermosa y memorablemente nostálgica que tiene esta película. En fin, esta cinta navideña es perfecta para ver, no solo en estas fechas, sino en cualquier momento en el que quieras disfrutar de una increíble aventura.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 10/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía y aventura.
