   Released in 1995, Casino is Martin Scorsese operating at full confidence. Coming off the legacy of Goodfellas, he returned to the world of organized crime but shifted the setting from New York streets to the neon glow of Las Vegas. Instead of just focusing on mob soldiers, Casino zooms out and shows the entire machine. The money, the politics, the skimming, the illusion of glamour hiding something much darker underneath.

   

   Robert De Niro plays Sam “Ace” Rothstein, a meticulous sports handicapper sent to run a casino for the Chicago Outfit. De Niro’s performance is controlled, intelligent, and quietly intimidating. Ace is not a street thug. He is a businessman who understands odds, risk, and precision. Watching him manage the casino floor with obsessive attention to detail is fascinating. His downfall is not incompetence, it is ego and emotion creeping into a system that depends on discipline.

   Joe Pesci delivers one of the most explosive performances of his career as Nicky Santoro. If Ace represents order, Nicky represents chaos. Pesci plays him with a volatility that feels dangerous in every scene. There is no filter, no patience, and no long term thinking. Nicky is muscle without restraint, and his presence constantly threatens to destroy everything Ace is trying to build. The tension between De Niro and Pesci drives the film and keeps it simmering even in quieter moments.

   Sharon Stone gives a career defining performance as Ginger McKenna. She is magnetic, manipulative, vulnerable, and tragic all at once. Ginger is not just a side character or love interest. She is central to the emotional collapse of the story. Stone brings depth to a character who could have easily been one dimensional. Her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination, and it is easy to see why. She makes you understand Ginger’s ambition, her addictions, and her self destructive spiral.

   Scorsese’s direction is masterful. The film runs nearly three hours, yet it never feels wasted. The pacing allows the audience to see the rise and fall in full detail. He uses voiceover from multiple perspectives, slick editing, and an incredible soundtrack filled with classic rock to keep the energy alive. The camera glides through casinos, counting rooms, and desert landscapes with confidence. Every frame feels intentional.

   What makes Casino stand out is how it breaks down the business side of organized crime. It shows how the mob infiltrated Las Vegas, skimmed millions off the top, and kept politicians and regulators looking the other way. The movie does not romanticize the lifestyle. It shows the greed, paranoia, and violence that eventually consume everyone involved. The glamour is real, but so is the cost.

   Visually, the film is stunning. The bright lights of the Strip contrast with the brutal reality of what happens behind closed doors. The costume design, especially Ginger’s extravagant wardrobe, reinforces the excess of the era. Everything looks big, loud, and over the top, which mirrors the characters’ personalities and decisions.

   Compared to Goodfellas, Casino feels more methodical and less chaotic in its storytelling, yet it carries an even heavier sense of inevitability. From the opening scene, you know this story will not end well. That sense of doom hangs over every success and every celebration. It is not about whether things fall apart. It is about when.

   Casino has earned its place as a classic because it does more than tell a crime story. It dissects power, loyalty, greed, and the illusion of control. It shows how empires built on corruption eventually collapse under their own weight. The performances, direction, music, and storytelling all come together to create something epic.

   

   Decades later, Casino still holds up as one of the definitive crime dramas ever made. It is bold, stylish, and unapologetically intense. For anyone who appreciates layered storytelling and powerhouse acting, this film remains essential viewing.

   The best American film maker living today is Martin Scorsese. He owes that reputation to great diversity of his work, made of extraordinary films throughout half a century that often divide critics over the question which of them is the best. Many, especially those of less snobbish persuasion, would point to Goodfellas, gangster film which combined epic docudrama and black comedy in a way that made it most accessible to general public and, later, popular source of Internet memes. Five years later Scorsese applied the same formula in Casino, film that can serve as perfect companion piece to Goodfellas.

   Just like Goodfellas, the film is based on the real events described in a book by Nicholas Pileggi, who also served as screenwriter. In this particular instance, those events were related to Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, Chicago bookmaker who used to run Las Vegas casinos for Mafia in 1970s and early 1980s. His fictional alter ego, played by Robert De Niro, is Samuel “Ace” Rothstein, Jewish American bookmaker with immense talent for picking up odds and outcome of sports events. Chicago Outfit and other Mafia organisations from Midwest, with whom he had been associated, send him to Las Vegas to supervise Tangier’s, one of the casinos under their control. Ace is very good at his job and easily manoeuvres between running legitimate business, dealing with card cheats, taking care of corrupt politicians and making sure that his criminal bosses take the cut of immense profits. The bosses also sent his childhood friend and gangster Nicky Santoro (played by Joe Pesci) to protect him, but Nicky sees Las Vegas as an opportunity to engage in unrefined street crime that starts to bring unwanted attention to Ace and his less problematic and more lucrative activities. The real problems for Ace begin, however, when he meets and falls in love and marries showgirl and former prostitute Ginger McKenna (played by Sharon Stone). He marries her despite her shady past only to discover that her lack of morals, alcoholism and drug dependency ruins not only his family, but begins to threaten his relationship with Nicky and his own life.

   Some critics would be tempted to accuse Scorsese of lacking originality in Casino. At first glance, this film looks a lot like some sort of sequel or remake to Goodfellas. This is not only in terms of having most of the previous film’s major cast (De Niro, Pesci) and subject, but also employing the similar style. This film also begins with spectacular violent incident to switch into narrative that would show decades or years preceding it. Again, the film uses voice-over narration by two major characters, occasionally joined by some supporting characters, which brings not only exposition, but some sort of ironic and darkly humorous commentary on the events shown in the film. The film also uses soundtrack based on pop standards of 1950s, 1960s and 1970s with lyrics that often give scenes another flavour of irony. Those songs are also accompanied with classic piece by Johann Sebastian Bach used in the opening titles and famous “Theme de Camille” from Georges Delerue’s score for Godard’s Contempt. Like in Goodfellas, black humour is accompanied with scenes of brutal violence, with Scorsese deliberately making them more graphic and extreme than in previous film (in order to, as he later explained, to saturate increasingly restrictive MPAA censors with shocking content to make them ignore and let less troublesome scenes pass).

   Despite all those similarities Casino is at the end of the day very different film Goodfellas. While the previous film dealt with American organised crime at its lowest level, showing often not so attractive lives of small time street hoods, this one is set in spot where the organised crime not only closest to legitimate business but also to show business. Las Vegas, unofficial American (and arguably global) capital of hedonism is shown as the most glitzy and attractive place, full of beautiful hotels, casinos, luxurious villas and beautiful women. This effect is underlined by cinematography by Robert Richardson that uses a lot of bright colours and have the protagonist lit in a way resembling supernatural and almost angelic being, thus confirming protagonist’s words that Las Vegas was “paradise”. Yet, this idyll is also shown to be an illusion; bright, shining city in the middle of the desert is fuelled by unrestrained greed, whether manifested by degenerate gamblers who destroy their lives at slot machines and card tables or casino staff that steal from their bosses. This greed is also fuelled by incredible easiness in which large amount of money change hands, which clouds peoples’ judgment in most devastating ways.

   Two major actors also play characters very different from those played in Goodfellas. De Niro plays man who is not the gangster in the strictest of sense. Ace is obviously intelligent and capable character that prefers to use his greatest asset – brains – instead of brawn to get ahead. Yet even he isn’t immune to the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas and ultimately makes wrong choices – flamboyant fashion style that brings too much attention to himself, very public feuds with local officials and, ultimately, taking obviously unsuitable person for his life partner. Joe Pesci, at first glance, plays character similar to the one played in Goodfellas. Nicky Santoro is a violent street thug, but, on the other hand, he is somewhat more restrained than Tommy DeVito; he has more finesse and street smarts and occasionally backs down when it suits his interests. He also has capability to act as a true friend and give good counsel to people. Yet, like in the case of Ace, the glamour, glitz and easy money of Las Vegas would ultimately corrupt him and bring bad decision ultimately resulting in bloodbath. Those two great performances are well matched by Sharon Stone who delivers one of the greatest role of her career. Stone, one of greatest sex symbols of 1990s Hollywood, is very believable as glamorous showgirl and she could have played femme fatale in her sleep. But here she offers something more. Ginger lacks not only morals, but also an intelligence and self-restraint. While other women in her position would have easily destroyed or exploited Ace, she allows demons of her past to control her actions, whether in suicidal relationship with her former pimp (played by James Woods in small, but effective role) or continuous descent into the alcoholism and drug habit, made even worse in context of her predictably failing attempts to be a good mother. Ginger, unlike two other major characters, doesn’t have any redeeming qualities and she begins looking less attractive near the end, when poor habits take their toll. Stone nevertheless keeps audience glued to the screen with her performance and she quite deservingly won Golden Globe for Best Actress in Drama. She, like this film and like so many great works of Scorsese, remained without Academy Award. All those who are willing to spend three hours of watching Casino would later spend much more time wondering why.

3. ›CASINO - Another day, another Clip@ykretz1829d

   

   I know I already shared with you a clip I worked on yesterday.

   But I had some work this time So I'll totally take the most out of it and share the most I can !

   The two clips' release date was the same, yesterday, but I really wanted to make it with one post for each and I wanted the other one to be the first (optimizing the rewards you know)

   This clip was is the second project with Ennio. If you want to see the first you can take a look at it here :

   Got this one we had a lot of problems. I already made a post about the shooting with my account @ykretz.sports through an actifit report here.

   This time I was also on the editing and there was a lot of work. Since the shooting was always in the same set and nothing except the sunlight changed, that was pretty hard to add something interesting to the clip.

   It was pretty hard to give a good rhythm to the images because I just wanted to add something else but We weren't having anything else to add.

   But with some work the director and I did something pretty great, we had do remove some things we wanted but you know, you have to do some mistakes to learn and avoid it in the future ! And with this shooting we learned a lot of things :')

   But I'm pretty happy when I see the final result ! Take a look :

   I hope you'll like it ! I will share with you every other projects I will do in the future !

   Obviously, everything is tinier if you compare with the project I showed to you yesterday. But this one was also totally different. Less budget and I was working on it only with friends. And that adds a lot to the work.

   In the followings weeks and months I'll have few things to show. Some clips where I only need to make little special effects, sometimes only at 1 moment for like 8 seconds. But hey, that's still forks and if I can promote the work of some friends I'll not avoid it !

   For the biggest project I worked on, a 52 minutes long short-movie, I think we'll have to wait for the end of the year, maybe November, to see it on Youtube. This one is pretty ambitious because the director already made 2 Shorts with more than 1 Million views (In france that's a lot of views when you're not really famous)

   Ամերիկայի կինոնկարում, ինչպես նաեւ աշխարհում, մեծ տեղ զբաղեցնում է այսպես կոչված «գանգստեր» ֆիլմերը, որոնք զբաղվում են մաֆիայի եւ բոլոր հետեւանքների հետ: Ճիշտն ասած, այս թեմայի վերաբերյալ ֆիլմերի առատությունը զարմացնում է ինձ: Ֆիլմերի մեծ մասը նման են միմյանց.

   Կասետային «Կազինո» հիշեցրեց ինձ մեկ այլ ժապավենի նույն տնօրեն. Երկու «Կազինո» եւ «Փառավոր տղաներ» հիմնված են Փիլեգիի գրքերում: Ֆիլմերը շատ նման են ոճով, խնդիրներին եւ այլն: Նրանց մեջ նաեւ նմանատիպ պատմվածք է (երկու անձի կողմից), դերասանների դերակատարումը (Դե Նիրո Պեսսկի). Թեեւ նրանք ունեն մի շարք տարբերություններ, այդ նկարները շատ նման են միմյանց: Պատկերը պատմում է Սամի մասին, որը նվեր էր ունեցել (ավելի ճիշտ, եռանդ եւ ինտուիցիա), գուշակելով մի շարք խաղերի արդյունքները. Արդյոք դա վազում է, թե խաղաթղթեր: Նման տաղանդը չի կարող հետաքրքրություն առաջացնել իտալական մաֆիայի վրա բոլոր հետեւանքներով: Գլխավոր ղեկավարները շատ էին գնահատում Սամին: Չնայած այն հանգամանքին, որ նա մեծ խնդիրներ ունի օրենքի հետ, նրանք նրան հասցրել են մեկ կազինոյի ղեկավար Լաս Վեգասում: Նա, թերեւս, Լաս Վեգասում ամենահզոր մարդն էր, բայց նրա դրախտը հավերժ չէր.

   Որոշ տեղերում ես ուզում էի նկարել հանցագործություն: Ինձ թվում էր, որ ամուսինների (Սեմ եւ Գանգեր) շատ դաժան վերաբերմունքը միմյանց եւ նրանց ընդհանուր դստերը: Երբեմն ես ավարտեցի հերոսուհու վարքագիծը, որը դուրս է եկել փողոցից, իրականում: Այսպիսով նկարում ընտանեկան արժեքների թեման ցուցադրվում է սպառիչ: Սյուժեն հատկապես բնօրինակ չէ: Իտալական ընտանիքը, այսպես թե այնպես, շատ գործերում է: Պատկերը սկսվում է ի վերջո, այսինքն, հենց սկզբից ցույց է տալիս, թե ինչ է կատարվել ավարտին հասցնել, որն էլ օգտագործվում ում: Ինձ դուր եկավ ֆիլմի վերջը, այն ավելի բնորոշ էր թվում, քան սպանությունը վերջում.

   Հսկայական գումարի, շքեղ ապրանքի շրջանակներում: Պատկերը մի իմաստով կարելի է անվանել փայլուն: Սեմի հագուստները պետք է նշվեն առանձին: Բոլորը պարզապես շքեղ են: Ինձ դուր եկավ հատկապես վարդագույն, որի վրա առաջին անգամ դերասանը հայտնվեց, եւ ինչպես որ այն «մահացավ» դեպի վերջ: Ընդհանուր առմամբ, պատկերը բավականին գեղեցիկ է գիշերը Լաս Վեգասի տեսակետները, զարմանալի կազինոյի ինտերիերը: Նկարում առկա են բռնությունների եւ դաժանության տեսարաններ (ֆիլմը, առավել եւս, մաֆիայի մասին). Դերասանները շատ գունագեղ են եւ իրենց հպարտությամբ հսկում են հինգ գումարած: Ռոբերտ Դե Նիրոն միշտ լավ դերը առանձնապես չի տարբերվում դերում, ընդհանրապես, շատ համոզիչ էր: Շերոն Սթոնը արժանացել է «Ոսկե գլոբուսին» որպես դերասանական լավագույն դերասանուհի, ինչպես նաեւ առաջադրվել է «Օսկար»: Սկզբունքորեն, «Կազինո» ինձ դուր եկավ, չնայած նրան, որ գրեթե 3 ժամ տեւում է (ինչը ինձ համար մինուս է). Ֆիլմում կան պահեր, որոնք դիտում են դիտողին էկրանին, բայց վերջում.

   Ընդհանրապես ֆիլմը հետաքրքիր է: Ես չեմ ասի, որ ես պետք է դիտեմ, բայց դա արժանանում է գանգստերային ֆիլմերի սիրահարների եւ մասնավորապես, հաջողվել Մարտին իհարկե այլընտրանք չունի, եւ, ըստ էության, միշտ, այն դարձնելով ֆիլմերի մասին գանգստերների. Հնարավոր է, որ անձը, իտալական արմատներով, պայթել են կինոյի Հոլիվուդի ընթացքում 70-ականներին Նոր ալիք էր միայն վիճակված է դառնալ նշաձող է ժանրի եւ մինչ օրս, ոչ թե պառկել, մեկ քառորդը բոլոր գանգստերական ստեղծվել է վերջին 40 տարիների ընթացքում, ստացել է մակդիրը դասական պատկանում է իրեն: «Կազինո» ֆիլմը, ընդհանուր առմամբ, անարդարացիորեն համարվում է դրանցից մեկը: Ֆիլմը, որը կառուցվել է շուրջ Սեմ, փայլուն ֆուտբոլիստ մաֆիայի նահանգապետի մեկում ամենահարուստ խաղատների Լաս Վեգասում. Ինչպես եւ սպասվում էր, մենք գնում ենք, հիմնական բնույթ է իր բոլոր ճանապարհ է այս դժվարին հարցում, իր ձեւավորման, շարունակելով փառաբանում այդ տարբերակային մեկնաբանության մի լա ամբողջ աշխարհը էր մեր ոտքերի, եւ վերջացրած անխուսափելի աշնանը, ինչը մասամբ մեղավոր է հերոսների , այսպիսի անկայուն աշխարհի մասամբ նոր իրողություններ.

   Ինչ է անմիջապես աչքի, դա անհերքելի նմանություններ այս աշխատանքի տպագրվել հինգ տարի ավելի վաղ, մեկ այլ դասական գանգստեր սագա, ի շահ այդ տրված, եւ բնույթի տեսակները շատ նման են: Այստեղ եւ Ռոբերտ Դե Նիրոն է առաջատար դերը, եւ Ջո քանի որ նրա իտալական ընկերոջ, ավազակային, եւ Ֆրենկ Վինսենթ, որոնք, ինչպես միշտ Սկորսեզեն հիանալի խաղում դերը երկրորդ պլանի, եւ նույնիսկ մայրը տնօրենի վառեց, ինչպես նաեւ գյուղական եւ միամիտ մաֆիայի մոր. Ինձ թվում է, անցնել ինչ-որ տեղ մեջտեղում մի ֆիլմի մեկ այլ անուշադիր լսարանի եւ ռիսկերի չի նկատել տարբերությունը, քանի որ համեմատությունը կամա թե ակամա առաջանում է ինքնին: Այս առումով, թաքնված է, քանի որ շատ ավելի գլամուր մի տղա է սովորական ընտանիքում, որը կյանքի երազանքը դառնալ գանգստեր.
