   Hello, cinema fans. This time I will tell you about a science fiction movie very different from what I have brought before (and this time I don't mean it in a good way). This is a film that since its release in theaters has not ceased to ruin my experience of watching robot movies. An absurd mix of machines, AI, crime and black humor in a style never seen before. Written and directed by Neill Blomkamp (same director of District 9 and Elysium), this is the third and worst of all the films he has been in charge of. The two-hour feature film stars Sharlito Copley, Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman, among others. I invite you to read one of the most deserving reviews I have given a movie to date.

Esta es una cinta que desde su estreno en cines no ha dejado de arruinarme la experiencia de ver películas de robots. Una mezcla absurda de máquinas, IA, crímenes y humor negro con un estilo nunca antes visto. Escrita y dirigida por Neill Blomkamp (mismo director de District 9 y Elysium), esta es la tercera y la peor de todas las películas en las que ha estado a cargo. El largometraje de dos horas de duración está protagonizado por Sharlito Copley, Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman, entre otros.    Plot

   The film opens by introducing us to the city of Johannesburg, South Africa, a place where crime and delinquency reign. At its worst, a squad of robot scouts is authorized to work side by side with the national police to fight crime. These robots are made at Tetravaal, a weapons factory where their original creator, scientist Deon Wilson, works. While he receives praise for the success his creation has achieved from the company and the police, we see how Deon has been working for years now on a prototype of artificial intelligence that effectively mimics, senses, and speaks like a human being. One day, he dawns working on its final phase, finally succeeding in creating a conscious and functional AI. However, when he tries to test it, the director of the company does not allow him to make such an experiment, so he acts on his own and takes a defective robot and the master key to do the test, but is intercepted by a small group of desperate criminals.

   La película inicia presentándonos la ciudad de Johannesburgo, Sudáfrica, un lugar donde reina el crimen y la delincuencia. En su peor momento, se autoriza la creación de un escuadrón de robots exploradores que trabajan lado a lado con la policía nacional para combatir el crimen.    I remember the "HYPE" there was ten years ago with this movie. When it was in theaters the publicity they put out made a lot of people talk about it. However, when I saw it years later on TV (as I did with almost every movie), it made me laugh, rather. More than an epic science fiction film with crime and action, what seemed to me from the beginning was a general audiovisual joke of the genre and of the same theme of robots with artificial intelligence. The characters, the story, the way it was developed and the exaggerated amount of rudeness, bad jokes and clichés of mafiosi and criminals who play the main characters made me see it as a slop of a film. Still to this day I am very surprised that there are people who like or prefer to watch this movie than any other. But what surprises me the most is how a promising director like Neill Blomkamp has fallen so low with this atrocity of a feature film. This being the third film in his filmography, I am sincerely disappointed by such a waste of work after the gem he managed to achieve with District 9.

   Recuerdo el “HYPE” que hubo hace diez años con esta película. Cuando estaba en cines la publicidad que sacaron hizo que mucha gente hablara de ella. Sin embargo, cuando la vi años después en televisión (como hice con casi todas las películas), me dió risa, más bien. Más que una cinta épica de ciencia ficción con crímenes y acción, lo que me pareció desde el principio fue un chiste audiovisual general del género y de la misma temática de robots con inteligencia artificial. Los personajes, la historia, la forma en la que se desarrollaba y la cantidad exagerada de groserías, chistes malos y clichés de mafiosos y criminales que hacen de protagonistas me hizo verla como una bazofia de cinta. Aún al día de hoy me sorprende mucho que haya gente que le guste o prefiera ver esta película que cualquier otra. Pero lo que más me sorprende es cómo un prometedor director como lo es Neill Blomkamp ha caído tan bajo con esta atrocidad de largometraje. Siendo esta la tercera película de su filmografía, sinceramente me siento decepcionado por tal desperdicio de obra luego de la joya que logró conseguir con District 9.

   I will not be as extensive with this review as I usually am because it is clear that it is more of a review than anything else. Personally I don't like to talk about movies that I hate and loathe, but being the case of a work of the science fiction genre and more of the subgenre of robots, it is clear that I owe a criticism or two among so many positive reviews to balance the balance a little. In this case what they try to show us from the beginning of this film is a city full of chaos and violence where the side of crime and the side of those in charge of security come together in a sequence of events not at all favorable. Starting with a scientist named Deon Wilson who has the illusion of creating an artificial intelligence that has the ability to think and reason just like a human does. This robot lover ignores protocols and personal and national security to put himself at risk trying to create the first robot with consciousness (AI). This obviously goes wrong as he is captured by criminals.

   The worst part of all this is not the typically absurd decision making of the scientist, but that his creation ends up falling into the wrong hands, giving us the birth and development of an intelligent robot with the skills of criminals and drug traffickers... great, isn't it (irony)? This attempted gangster robot is the famous Chappie and is the protagonist of this absurd movie. Well, I think I made clear my personal opinion about all this above, although it was something general. But I will tell you in detail what I do not like about this film, starting with the protagonist, this same robot from which originates the great amount of criticism that surely there was at the time on the internet when it was released in theaters and thousands of people paid to waste two whole hours of their lives in such a garbage of a movie. The forced attempt to interpret the typical plot of the robot with artificial intelligence that learns by itself and grows getting a conscience and its own thinking more advanced than that of a human being is in this work what is the result of a monkey trying to make a portrait of the Mona Lisa with its own excrement.

   No seré tan extenso con esta reseña como normalmente lo soy debido a que está claro que es más una crítica que cualquier otra cosa. Personalmente no me gusta hablar de películas que detesto y aborrezco, pero siendo el caso de una obra del género de ciencia ficción y más del subgénero de robots, está claro que debo una que otra crítica entre tantas reseñas positivas para así equilibrar un poco la balanza. En este caso lo que nos intentan mostrar desde el principio de esta película es una ciudad repleta de caos y violencia donde el bando del crimen y el bando de los que se encargan de la seguridad se unen en una secuencia de acontecimientos para nada favorables. Empezando por un científico llamado Deon Wilson que tiene la ilusión de crear una inteligencia artificial que tenga la capacidad de pensar y razonar al igual que lo hace un humano. Este amante de los robots ignora los protocolos y la seguridad personal y nacional para ponerse en riesgo intentando crear el primer robot con conciencia (IA). Es obvio que esto sale mal ya que es capturado por unos criminales.

   Lo peor de todo esto no es la toma típicamente absurda de decisiones que tiene el científico, sino que su dichosa creación termina cayendo en malas manos, dándonos así el nacimiento y desarrollo de un robot inteligente con dotes o conocimientos de criminales y narcotraficantes… genial, ¿no? (ironía). Este intento de robot gánster es el famoso Chappie y es el protagonista de esta absurda película. Bueno, creo que ya arriba les dejé claro mi opinión personal sobre todo esto, aunque fue algo general. Pero les diré en detalle qué es lo que no me gusta de esta cinta, empezando por el protagonista, este mismo robot del cual se origina la gran cantidad de críticas que seguramente hubo en su momento en internet cuando se estrenó en cines y miles de personas pagaron por desperdiciar dos horas enteras de sus vidas en tal bazofia de película. El intento forzado de interpretar la típica trama del robot con inteligencia artificial que aprende por sí mismo y crece consiguiendo una conciencia y un pensamiento propio más avanzado que el de un ser humano es en esta obra lo que es el resultado de que un mono intente hacer un retrato de la Mona Lisa con su propio excremento.

   While it has its good things in the cast, as is the case of Hugh Jackman playing a bad attempt at being a villain, it is the very script of the film that ruins everything when we see that this same character -for example- played by this great actor is just a military man trying to be a renowned scientist. As I mentioned before, it is not only the case of the characters, who are partly to blame, but the movie itself in general seeks to make everything that happens look so absurd that it is hard not to laugh despite showing us a serious and unfunny environment. Of course, there comes a point in the film where everything that happens becomes nonsense with an ending so bizarre and badly contrived that it's better if they had never released this bad attempt at a movie in theaters. On the other hand, as a forced attempt to extract something good out of this mountain of excrement, I would like to mention how interesting this movie would have been if they had focused better on some of the themes it mentions; such as the value of the soul or life, the struggle of good against evil and the importance of following your dreams and being yourself. Yes, I know, this I say may sound quite exaggerated for a movie like this, but as I have seen it so many times in my life, I can affirm that these themes are mentioned and tried to be conveyed until the very end.

   Among so many bad things I have already mentioned, I missed to say how much I detest the way crime is idolized in this movie. From the beginning we meet the group of criminals who end up educating and teaching Chappie to be what we end up seeing at the end as a bizarre version of the typical group of heroes or protagonists of the movie. It shows us, scene after scene, attempts to humanize these people and give them feelings and good intentions, as if they were the good guys in the end. I understand that the director sought to give a different touch to this story with a drastic change of roles by showing those who are supposed to be the bad guys as the good guys and those who should be good as the bad guys of the play. But to go so far as to idolize certain characters to turn them in the end into symbols or heroic figures or something like that is already going a bit too far. I also don't like the absurd way of explaining or mentioning complex or deep topics such as artificial intelligence or the soul as if they were trying to reach a child audience with this work, which is obviously for adults with bad tastes.

   Si bien tiene sus cosas buenas en el reparto, como es el caso de Hugh Jackman haciéndose pasar por un mal intento de villano, es el mismo guión de la película lo que arruina todo al ver que este mismo personaje -por ejemplo- que interpreta este grandioso actor es solo un militar intentando ser un científico reconocido. Como ya mencioné antes, no solo es el caso de los personajes, los cuales tienen parte de la culpa, sino que la misma película en general busca la forma de que todo lo que suceda se vea tan absurdo que es difícil no reírse a pesar de mostrarnos un ambiente serio y poco chistoso. Claro, llega una parte en la película en la que todo lo que sucede se convierte en un sinsentido con un final tan bizarro y mal inventado que es mejor que nunca hubieran sacado este mal intento de película en cines. Por otro lado, como un intento forzoso de extraer algo bueno de esta montaña de excremento, me gustaría mencionar lo interesante que hubiera sido esta película si se hubiesen enfocado mejor en algunos de los temas que menciona; como por ejemplo el valor del alma o la vida, la lucha del bien contra el mal y la importancia de seguir tus sueños y ser tú mismo. Si, lo sé, esto que digo puede que suene bastante exagerado para una película como esta, pero como la he visto tantas veces en mi vida, puedo afirmar que estos temas se mencionan y se intentan transmitir hasta el final.

   De entre tantas cosas malas que he mencionado ya, me faltó decir lo mucho que detesto la forma de idolatrar el crimen en esta película. Desde el principio conocemos al grupo de criminales que terminan educando y enseñando a Chappie a ser lo que terminamos viendo al final como una versión bizarra del típico grupo de héroes o protagonistas de la película. La misma nos muestra, escena tras escena, intentos de humanizar a esta gente y darle sentimientos y buenas intenciones, como si fueran los buenos al final. Entiendo que el director buscó darle un toque diferente a esta historia con un cambio drástico de papeles al mostrar a los que supuestamente son los malos como los buenos y a los que deberían de ser buenos como los malos de la obra. Pero el llegar a idolatrar a ciertos personajes para convertirlos al final en símbolos o figuras heroicas o algo así ya es pasarse un poco. Tampoco me gusta la forma tan absurda de explicar o mencionar temas complejos o profundos como la inteligencia artificial o el alma como si buscaran llegar a un público infantil con esta obra que evidentemente es para gente adulta y con malos gustos.

   To conclude and contradicting what I said before that I was not going to extend this post, I will mention the only -potentially- good thing this movie has. The visuals are excellent, except of course the disgusting style of the criminals, their shelters or homes and the terrible make-up they have. On the other hand, the use of practical and computer-made visual effects, the design of the robots, the use of slow-motion and aerial shots is one of the most pleasant things you can find among all the swill this movie has. The soundtrack I absolutely loathe, as it is nothing more than the repertoire of songs by the South African Hip Hop band that is also part of the cast in this film. While they do manage to convey some emotions and feelings, most scenes with music, setting, drama and action only manage to convey a seemingly serious joke of a story already told. Anyway, as I said at the beginning, this movie is not for you to watch after reading all this, but for you to forget it ever existed.

   Personally, I give it a 3/10 rating as far as the sci-fi/crime genre is concerned.

   Para finalizar y contradiciendo lo que dije antes de que no me iba a extender con este post, les mencionaré lo único -potencialmente- bueno que tiene esta película. El apartado visual es excelente, quitando por supuesto el asqueroso estilo de los criminales, sus refugios o hogares y el terrible maquillaje que tienen. En cambio, el uso de efectos visuales prácticos y hechos a computadora, el diseño de los robots, el uso de las cámaras lentas y los planos aéreos es de lo más agradable que se puede encontrar entre toda la bazofia que tiene esta película. La banda sonora la detesto completamente, ya que no es más que el repertorio de canciones de la banda Hip Hop sudafricana que también forma parte del elenco en esta película. Si bien logran transmitir algunas emociones y sentimientos, la mayoría de escenas con musicalización, ambientación, drama y acción solo logran transmitir un chiste aparentemente serio de una historia ya contada. En fin, como ya dije al principio, esta película no es para que la vean luego de leer todo esto, sino para que se olviden de que alguna vez existió.

   Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 3/10 en lo que respecta al género de ciencia ficción y crimen.

   In my personal opinion, Chappie is a movie that goes beyond the theme of automaton artificial intelligence, as The Movie is full of thrilling action, impressive visual effects and outstanding performances, which adds great value to the plot. Moreover, it is a touching and unforgettable film that will make you reflect on what it means to be human and how our technology can help us find our humanity in an increasingly chaotic and dangerous world.

   Now let's talk about Chappie's strengths or positives:

   Impressive performances: The film features a stellar cast, including Sharlto Copley as the voice and movement of Chappie, I personally really like this actor's work in the movie Sector 9 and here he also shines in the role of Chappie, Hugh Jackman as a rival engineer who I was actually quite impressed to see him as the bad guy or the antagonist of a movie, I was constantly used to seeing him as a hero, but he does an impressive role and Dev Patel as the creator of Chappie, this actor I think had a weak role and the ending was crazy, but I still liked his performance. The performances of all of them are impressive and add depth and emotion to the story. And of course how can I forget the legendary performance of Ninja and Yolandi, who after watching the movie I was hooked on their music hahaha xD.

   Impressive visual effects: The movie features top notch visual effects, which make Chappie and the other robots look realistic and believable. The visual effects are impressive and add to the immersion in the futuristic world of the movie. And another thing that I also include is the soundtrack, in which the master Hans Zimmer collaborated, which gives that harmonic and impressive touch to the story.

   Relevant and deep themes: The film deals with deep and relevant themes such as artificial intelligence, conscience, humanity, morality and ethics. The story of Chappie makes you reflect on what it means to be human and how our technology can affect our humanity. Because even though a robot may be programmed or taught to do evil, having a conscience of its own makes it that much more human. These themes make the film very interesting and meaningful.

   En mi opinión personal, Chappie es una película que va más allá del tema de la inteligencia artificial autómata, ya que La película está llena de acción emocionante, efectos visuales impresionantes y actuaciones destacadas, lo cual le agrega un gran valor a la trama. Además, es una película conmovedora e inolvidable que te hará reflexionar sobre lo que significa ser humano y sobre cómo nuestra tecnología puede ayudarnos a encontrar nuestra humanidad en un mundo cada vez más caótico y peligroso.

   Ahora hablemos de los puntos fuertes o positivos de Chappie:

   Actuaciones impresionantes: La película cuenta con un reparto estelar, incluyendo a Sharlto Copley como la voz y el movimiento de Chappie, personalmente me gusta mucho el trabajo de este actor en la película Sector 9 y aquí tambien se luce en el papel de Chappie, Hugh Jackman como un ingeniero rival que la verdad me impresiono bastante verlo como el malo o el antagonista de una película, constantemente me había acostumbrado a verlo como un héroe, pero hace un papel impresionante y Dev Patel como el creador de Chappie este actor si pienso que tuvo un papel flojo y el final estuvo de locos, pero de igual forma me gusto su actuación. Las actuaciones de todos ellos son impresionantes y agregan profundidad y emoción a la historia. Y claro cómo olvidar la actuación legendaria de Ninja y Yolandi, que luego de ver la película quede enganchado a su música jajaja xD.

   Efectos visuales impresionantes: La película cuenta con efectos visuales de primera clase, que hacen que Chappie y los otros robots se vean realistas y creíbles. Los efectos visuales son impresionantes y agregan a la inmersión en el mundo futurista de la película. Y otra cosa que tambien incluyo es la banda sonora, en la cual colaboro el maestro Hans Zimmer, que le da ese toque armónico e impresionante a la historia.

   Temas relevantes y profundos: La película trata temas profundos y relevantes como la inteligencia artificial, la conciencia, la humanidad, la moralidad y la ética. La historia de Chappie te hace reflexionar sobre lo que significa ser humano y sobre cómo nuestra tecnología puede afectar a nuestra humanidad. Porque, aunque un robot pueda ser programado o enseñado a hacer el mal, el tener conciencia propia lo hace mucho más humano. Estos temas hacen que la película sea muy interesante y significativa.

   Chappie es el primer androide con conciencia propia de verdad: Normalmente en las películas futuristas o que traten temas de ficción como la inteligencia o automatiza en la maquinas, normalmente se sientes frías y flojas, por ejemplo aunque en Terminator las maquinas eran dirigidas por una inteligencia artificial, los T-800 y otros robots no tenían tanto grado de emociones, una película que si dio un salto importante en este tema de personalizar o humanizar a las maquinas fue I Robot, pero abarco otros tema mucho más profundos, en cambio Chappie es el primer androide dotado de inteligencia artificial y conciencia propia, lo que lo convierte en un ser único e inigualable. Ver su desarrollo a lo largo de la película es emocionante y conmovedor, y te hace reflexionar sobre lo que significa ser humano y como las maquinas puedes ser humanizadas mucho mas allá de lo que conocemos.

   El entorno donde se desarrolla, esta película se desarrolla en la ciudad de Johannesburgo donde se presenta como un entorno sumamente peligroso. Johannesburgo, Sudáfrica, es una ciudad asolada por la violencia y el crimen. Esto le da un aire de peligro y tensión a la película, y hace que las escenas de acción sean aún más emocionantes y llenas de adrenalina. Las escenas que más me encantaron fue cuando tratan de llevar a cabo el robo, donde Chappie es usado como un escudo y un ninja ladrón, lo cual y bastante divertido y emocionante.

   Muchos hemos imaginado sobre que seria de este planeta si fuera controlado por robots o simplemente sean incluidos como una necesidad básica de cualquier tipo. Películas como RoboCop nos han planteado un ambiente específico sobre el poder y la influencia de la inteligencia artificial en nuestro entorno, dándole un toque de rebelión hacia su creador, se han convertido en posibles teorías algo apocalípticas pero interesantes.

   Many of us have imagined what this planet would be like if it were controlled by robots or simply included as a basic need of any kind. Movies like RoboCop have given us a specific environment about the power and influence of artificial intelligence in our environment, giving it a touch of rebellion towards its creator, have become possible theories somewhat apocalyptic but interesting.

   Pero dentro del género futurista, siempre se han enfocado más en lo que pasaría si los adultos usaran la tecnología para el bien o mal, o si los mismos robots tuvieran el chip de la maldad, pero nunca antes se habían enfocado en lo que pasaría si aquel robot quisiera tomar sus propias selecciones, si aprendiera ciertas características humanas que lo moldearan para saber que existen más opciones del ya establecido, pero no con la intención de ser un humano más si no de simplemente estar informado y tener mejores medios para proteger a su creador o a los humanos que lo apoyen.

   But within the futuristic genre, they have always focused more on what would happen if adults used technology for good or evil, or if the robots themselves had the evil chip, but never before had they focused on what would happen if that robot wanted to make its own choices, if it learned certain human characteristics that would mold it to know that there are more options than the already established, but not with the intention of being just another human but simply to be informed and have better means to protect its creator or the humans that support it.

   Hoy les hablaré de una película que decidió plasmar las obligaciones de una creación tecnológica, ¿Por qué solo enfocarse con el único objetivo de tu creación y no con más objetivos propios? Como la tecnología pudiese ser capaz de decidir basado en las probabilidades y la actitud que recibes del otro pero sin llegar al razonamiento natural humano.

   Today I will talk about a movie that decided to capture the obligations of a technological creation, why only focus on the sole objective of your creation and not with more of your own objectives? How technology could be able to decide based on probabilities and the attitude you receive from the other but without reaching the natural human reasoning.

   

   La película se enfoca en un pequeño robot el cual fue creado para ser parte del cuerpo policiaco dentro de la ciudad. Combatía con los malos, protegía a los buenos, controlaba motines o se enfrentaba en medio de tiroteos con delincuentes. Como era completamente de metal, digamos que su equipo era el primer filtro para enviarlo a lugares o situaciones peligrosas, ya que los humanos morirían si se involucran, así que aquellos robots policiacos sería el comodín de la justicia.

   The movie focuses on a small robot which was created to be part of the police force in the city. He fought with the bad guys, protected the good guys, controlled riots or confronted in the middle of shootouts with criminals. As it was completely made of metal, let's say that its equipment was the first filter to send it to dangerous places or situations, since humans would die if they got involved, so those police robots would be the wild card of justice.

   Desafortunadamente en medio de la confrontación, nuestro protagonista sufrió un fuerte daño en su sistema operativo que le dejo serios problemas en sus circuitos. Su creador le realizo un chequeo para verificar cuanto daño sufrió y se dio cuenta de que no podría rescatar ese chip principal que contenía el mando policiaco, como ya no tendría un propósito, su creador quiso experimentar con él.

   Unfortunately, in the middle of the confrontation, our protagonist suffered severe damage to his operating system that left him with serious problems in his circuits. His creator performed a checkup to verify how much damage he suffered and realized that he could not rescue the main chip that contained the police command, as it would no longer have a purpose, his creator wanted to experiment with it.

   El creador le colocaría un chip programado para que aprendiera y adquiriera infinidad de conocimientos ilimitados, basándose únicamente en el habla y escucha, uno de los rasgos dentro de las etapas del desarrollo humano.    The creator would place a chip programmed to learn and acquire unlimited knowledge, based solely on speech and listening, one of the features within the stages of human development. But the government found out about the experiment and had no choice but to intentionally misplace the robot, preventing its misuse.

   Un pequeño grupo de delincuentes encontrarían al pequeño robot, después de descubrir que si funcionaba, pero no contaba con la programación que debería tener como policía, decidieron "adoptarlo" y enseñarlo a tener comportamientos particulares que le convenían. Pero la bondad y maldad se presentarían durante ese proceso, ya que la diferencia de ideas dentro de aquel grupo de delincuentes sería el auge del desarrollo de la película.

   A small group of criminals would find the little robot, after discovering that it worked, but did not have the programming it should have as a police officer, they decided to "adopt" it and teach it to have particular behaviors that suited it. But goodness and evil would be presented during this process, since the difference of ideas within that group of criminals would be the peak of the development of the film.

   ¿Qué tanta sensibilidad y empatía podrías tener hacia una inteligencia artificial? ¿Qué tan artificial sería dicha inteligencia? ¿Tendríamos la culpa de una posible rebelión tecnológica por tener siempre la costumbre de aprovecharnos de todo? Estas preguntas surgieron durante la película, ni la tecnología ni el medio ambiente o la contaminación son los malos aquí, el verdadero villano es la incapacidad de un ser humano para sacar un buen beneficio de cualquier cosa pero sin quitarle su propia vida, su propia esencia, su propio objetivo.

   How much sensitivity and empathy could you have for an artificial intelligence? How artificial would such an intelligence be? Would we be to blame for a possible technological rebellion for always having the habit of taking advantage of everything? These questions arose during the film, neither technology nor the environment or pollution are the bad guys here, the real villain is the inability of a human being to make a good profit out of anything but without taking away his own life, his own essence, his own purpose.

   Los seres humanos nunca están satisfechos, siempre quieren más, son como una hierva que se dedica a invadir y apropiarse de todo, nunca se ponen a pensar en lo que podría afectar, si es la mejor manera o simplemente regresar un poco de lo que extrae. Y esta película abarca esas decisiones, como el concepto de poder y destrucción contamina fácilmente el pensamiento y muy difícilmente podría liberarse.

   Human beings are never satisfied, they always want more, they are like a weed that is dedicated to invade and appropriate everything, they never think about what it could affect, if it is the best way or just give back a little of what it extracts. And this film embraces those decisions, how the concept of power and destruction easily contaminates the thought and very hardly could be released.
