  1. Retro Film Review: The Island (2005)@drax809d

    (source: tmdb.org)

At the turn of the 20th century, many scholars believed that science had reached its limits and that few groundbreaking discoveries awaited. It seems that contemporary Hollywood producers harbour similar sentiments towards science fiction. Each new science fiction film appears to be a mere repackaging of the older classics. One such example is Michael Bay's 2005 film, The Island.

The film commences in a vast subterranean high-tech facility, designed to safeguard survivors from the consequences of an environmental disaster that has devastated the Earth. The inhabitants of this new world lead comfortable lives, albeit under the constant surveillance of their enigmatic and sinister overseers, led by the psychiatrist Dr. Merrick (played by Sean Bean). The only source of excitement is the Lottery, with the winners earning the right to travel to the "Island" - the sole unpolluted place on Earth. The Lottery is a subject of intense speculation among Lincoln Six Echo (played by Ewan McGregor) and his companions. Lincoln's curiosity leads him to discover the harrowing truth behind the Lottery - he and thousands of other people are nothing more than clones, bred and raised to provide their "originals" with compatible organs. When Lincoln and his love interest, Jordan Two Delta (played by Scarlett Johansson), escape, they discover that the world is still intact and that they might find shelter in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Merrick hires a former French commando, Albert Laurent (played by Djimon Hounsou), to capture the fugitive clones.

The Island begins promisingly, which is a rare occurrence for Michael Bay's films. The first half of the film, set in the seemingly utopian futuristic facility, may evoke memories of Logan's Run, THX 1138, Coma, and other science fiction classics. Unfortunately, when the protagonists leave this setting, Bay seizes the opportunity to transform what could have been a thoughtful science fiction drama into a series of chases, fights, shootouts, and explosions that lack any coherence. The acting talents, just like the basic idea behind the script, are squandered. This includes Scarlett Johansson's assets, which can never be fully utilised in a film rated PG-13. Unsurprisingly, all the complex ethical questions concerning cloning or the true nature of human identity are completely overlooked.

Another frustrating aspect of The Island is Bay's adherence to the unwritten "politically correct" laws of Hollywood screenwriting. Sean Bean's character begins as a benevolent figure, but his peculiar British accent suggests a more sinister backstory. Djimon Hounsou's character starts as a villain, but his race makes it clear that he will undergo a moral transformation before the film ends.

Despite its intriguing premise and solid opening, The Island ultimately fails to build upon the legacy of classic science fiction films. This will undoubtedly be a heartbreaking experience for all the fans of the genre.

    RATING: 3/10 (+)

Ah man, look how young these guys look. Ewan McGregor and Scarlet Johansson, wow, so young. This reminds me of how good I looked when I was younger, I mean, not of these guys calibres, but damn wasn't it nice to look young and good?

That aside this was an amazing film. Psychologically a masterpiece. For someone to think up such a concept they would have had to have sat down and thought it out quite a bit; the way the characters interact with each other, the absolute psychotic to the point of viewing himself as a god the main doctor must be. As someone that deals with people regularly, it's quite amazing how it all worked out.

You see to keep them confined and controlled you need to make them fear the unknown, the unknown is death, the unknown is scary therefor you shouldn't venture there. The big gaurds with scary masks and big machine guns are here to protect you.

Humans are at our most vulnerable when we seek safety; we opt for the bigger stronger person to protect us, we see strength in numbers, and delegate the big decisions to the clan leader. Safety is almost always at the expense of discovery, curiosity, and independence.

This (as well as a good film) is a chilling portrayal of how humans act and can be herded like cattle when scared. Most probably wont see it that way, but as someone that's spent a life of studying this stuff, I've noticed this is a film that delves far deeper than just the outlining of a good story. It really uses some of our best traits: friendship, strength in numbers, loyalty, against us.

And that's what I liked about it, you know? It really got into the meat of things and how humans can be abused in many ways.

We start off our film with Licoln Six Echo (a strange name, but we roll with it) who was discovered out in the wilderness. The powers that be, brought him in and nursed him back to health. Now, young, and full of energy, and in some sort of building that's futuristic and very nice, he gets through his merry day just getting around with his daily business.

    But he has dreams.

And he's curious. He wonders why survivors keep coming to his building. From where do they come? Why do they go to the Island? How is it set up this way. All these questions he has rolling in his head but no-one else seems to question any of it.

He has a really really good friend, Jordan Two Delta (played by Scarlett Johansson), with whom he shares his thoughts with, and they are almost a terrible twosome, getting into trouble together, always getting in close contact with each other (which isn't allowed), and they are as Forrest Gump would call it, "Like two peas in a pod."

But something happened. Lincoln Six Echo accidentally climbed to a part that he shouldn't have been in, and they witnessed them killing someone that was supposed to go to the island only the day before. All IS not what it seems. His fears weren't wrong, and..

Jordan Two Delta's turn to go to the Island is up next. His best friend and confidant...

Duch a really really expertly crafted storyline and narrative. I can't reommend this one enough to those that are interested in this sort of stuff!

Hi friends, how are you all? I hope you are well. Friends, today I watched a Hollywood movie, as I am a movie lover, whenever I get time, I like to watch movies. And always keep Hollywood movies on the list of favorites because the Hollywood movie industry makes different types of movies. And I like action movies more. So, try to watch action movies. I liked watching this movie trailer, so I thought today I will watch this movie and share something about this movie with you.

    image.png source

Friends, the beginning of the movie shows a guy enjoying himself in a resort, a girl is singing beautifully in front of him. She is enjoying the song very much. When the girl finished singing, he invited her to have coffee with him. He accepted the girl's invitation to have coffee. The two were talking while sitting at the same table, when the waiter brought the coffee and accidentally poured the coffee and it fell on the girl. Then the waiter very sincerely apologized to the girl. But the man who showed up first laughed and shot him. He is a gangster. And he is the owner of the resort that is shown first. This is how the movie has been started... The kind of scenery that was shown at the beginning of the movie is commendable.

    image.png source

This movie is an action movie. Guys, the brother of the boy that gangster shot and killed is an FBI officer. When he sees his brother's dead body, he tries to find the real killer. And she was able to find out. There are some great action scenes from the beginning to the end of the movie which you will love. The director has tried to present his story very nicely. I like the movie very much. The director has straightforwardly given his story.

    image.png source

I like the location used in this movie, a city in the middle of an island. It has been mentioned that gangsters live around the island and the suffering of common people there. In particular, there are parts of this movie that go without saying, such as the kind of director twist at the end that you will like very much. From the beginning to the end, I didn't think there was a place where the director could have done any mistake. The one who was the choreographer of the movie presented his work very beautifully, also the one who was the action director of this movie presented his work beautifully.

Guys, those of you who have seen this movie will agree with me. And for those who have not seen this movie, you can watch this movie if you want. Hope you don't feel bad.

    Hello,

How are you all? Alhamdulillah I am fine. Today I will tell you about something that you might like. Humans once advanced themselves to such an extent that they began to strive to survive on earth.

Humans at one time also understood very well that trying to save people all their lives would lead to more dire situations for the world. Many may not believe, but you will get some idea through today's wonderful movie. At least a basic idea of what can be done using human clones can be seen and learned today.

Imagine another person artificially created like you, artificially created from a clone of your body, and both think differently and face your own enemy. Let us introduce you to a wonderful movie with some interesting scenes.

    Movie Review:

The movie first shows a laboratory where countless people have been cloned. At the same time, it can be seen that the two main characters of the movie are on a wonderful trip. And that's where Lincoln, the main character of the movie, is suddenly separated from Jordan. After that, it can be seen that Lincoln was seeing these things in his dreams.

After that, Lincoln begins to look for the reason for all this and he finds many people like him throughout the laboratory. He even sees a scene of childbirth there. At the same time, Lincoln also realizes that he and all other people are being controlled. Lincoln is worried about all the strange rules and regulations inside their lab.

    [IMAGE](http://basementrejects.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/the-island-2005-michael-clarke-duncan-review.jpghttp://basementrejects.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/the-island-2005-michael-clarke-duncan-review.jpg)

Lincoln could see that everyone was selected by lottery to live on an island, and thus countless people won and began to live on that island. Is it really sending everyone to that island or doing something else, that is the first mystery.

The second mystery of the movie is the scene where Merit knows more about the people in the lab than the lab chief. Which really makes Lincoln a little more curious about what's going on in the lab.

The third mystery occurs when the Lincolns are all told that they have been brought here because the Earth has become uninhabitable. But seeing a live butterfly outside, Lincoln realizes they are being lied to in the lab.

However, it was announced that Jordan, the person closest to Lincoln, had won the lottery that day. As a result, he discovers the medical lab through the butterfly he keeps and finds them killed in the lab after winning the lottery.

    [IMAGE](https://www.filmaffinity.com/us/filmimages.php?movie_id=803116)

Along with him, Lincoln sees the woman who died handing over her baby to a woman who looks exactly like her. Lincoln then sees the chest of a victorious man from a few days ago being cut open, who happens to be a big-name player. Then the player was killed with kidney liver.

Lincoln goes back to his place to tell everyone, but the lab chief sees Lincoln through the camera and tells everyone to kill Lincoln. But Lincoln escaped with Jordan by then. After learning everything from a friend named James, Lincoln and Jordan realize that everyone in the lab will be killed.

However, Lincoln and Jordan try to save everyone and with a great trick and fight, the illegal organ business laboratory is destroyed. As a result, all the cloned humans are released to the world and get a chance to see the beautiful world. And this is how the movie ends.

Well, tell me, do you also support the idea of making clones of yourself to survive in life? And if humans are created from clones like this, can real humans survive? How can the human conflict in the world?

    Comment:

The horrible misuse and commercialization of science seen in movies is fun for entertainment but people can never imagine how horrible it can be in real life. But the movie is good for awareness and to understand the terrible nature of science. For those of you who haven't seen this movie yet, take the time to watch it and let us know how you feel in the comments.

Thank you all so much for reading about the movie and watching the movie.

The Island (2005) - A film with a good and interesting subject that is worth watching.

**Hello everybody. Today in this post i will try to present a good movie, with a script that i can say, can keep you captive in front of the screen. Ok, in this movie story, the main actors Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson play the role of special clones. Clones, created especially for changing the organs of some super-rich people from the outside world.** **Ok, just thinking i could be a clone in this precious life, created especially for certain petty purposes, kind of gives me exaggerated palpitations - I wouldn't like to find out. And yet, if i sit and think a little about the genesis of the world, humanity could be an amazing creation of a super, super advanced civilization (well, I can't really accept the idea that I'm just a clone).** **Anyway, no matter what you think or not, i confidently recommend the film - it's an art film created for anyone who likes the science fiction genre. It is a good and interesting film that presents a hypothetical situation in which the possible effects of human cloning can be seen. A possible real problem but presented in a simulated way (from my point of view this would be the role of these film creations like science fiction).**

In fact, there has been and still is a lot of debate about the morality of the medical act of cloning (Just do a little research on the World Wide Web about Dolly the sheep). Cloning is still a delicate subject in the civilization in which we continue to live our lives. That is, there are still many of us who cannot accept or conceive of human cloning. Indeed, there are many followers of cloning who claim that those possible clones will be able to provide compatible organs in case of transplantation, thus saving people's lives (here would come the problem of the soul, the ego of that cloned being - xD is a living being) - while the others who are on the other barricade and here i am referring to the opponents of cloning, state that cloning would be an immoral, barbaric medical procedure.

Interestingly, director Michael Bay impresses with his idea, story, actors, action and effects - I liked it and it was well worth the time. Just a little summary - nothing more.

Two mysterious characters, Lincoln Six-Echo (Ewan McGregor) and Jordan Two-Delta (Scarlett Johansson) are among the hundreds of residents of an institution under control. These two characters along with the other inhabitants are housed in a carefully controlled environment - everything related to their daily lives being completely monitored, under the pretext that it would be for their own good. When the two characters discover that the Island is a cruel prank, they will try to escape. From that moment on, the two will have a real fight for survival.

Honestly, this movie, The Island - is the kind of science fiction movie i love the most. And this only because it presents a topic that is still controversial at the moment and because it has a very well-developed story that keeps you constantly in suspense. From my point of view, human cloning will one day be allowed, but to clone a human being so that it can be used as a donor - it's real cruelty, barbarism, quite macabre - something my mind can't accept. Every living thing has the right to live to the point of exhaustion - even if it is cloned (it is one hundred percent alive).

Do not miss this film - it is a futuristic film with a special subject with a possible alternative hypothesis of the future of humanity. The future of our descendants depends very much on the degree of morality of those present in this life. For me, the story of the subject of this film completely upset me. Would a clone of a certain human being actually think independently? Would he have emotions? Feelings or feelings? or Would he really have the same memories or feelings with the cloned subject? Finally, many question marks can be asked, which are more or less strange or maybe stupid. All the best - Enjoy Your Time.

  6. The Island (2006) Ostrav - Movie Review@coldsteem2720d

The Island (Ostrav) takes place at a monastery located on a small set of islands in what appears to be an isolated, frozen part of Russia.  The port islands served as a military outpost during the war.  But in 1976, an add group of monks are the only full time residents, although they are visited frequently by visitors from the mainland.

Father Anatoli (Pyotr Mamonov) is a pious monk who has been at the monastery since 1942.  He was serving at the military outpost when it was blown up by the German Navy.  He carries a deep burden, having killed a comrade to save his own life.  His deprivation and self-flagellation are exemplary to the other monks.  But some despise him.  He does not wash regularly, he is a prankster, he break from tradition and faces the wrong way during prayers, and he has his own following of people who seek healing from him.

Father Anatoli lives on his own island.  It is a boiler house.  His bed is a pile of coals that he uses to feed the fire.  His blanket is the dank air inside his hut.  Although many people seek his counsel or healing powers, they mistake the Father for a servant.  Anatoli uses this to ruse his guests.  He often tells them things they do not want to hear, or challenges them when he knows they are lying to him.  It seems the Father has the ability to heal, to have visions of the future and to know things about people that he couldn't possibly know.  Yet he carries his burden, which has eaten his heart away.  He is looking for his own personal redemption, which even the Father Superior (Viktor Sukhorukov) cannot give him.

While The Island was intended to be an art house style film, writer Dmitri Sobolev manages to create a story that has a rewarding ending with a minor twist.  Like most films of this genre, we are treated to exceptional character studies that delve deep into a few characters to provide insight and to develop the themes.  The cerebral qualities of this film cause it drag for long stretches, relying on exceptional visual stimulation from the picturesque frozen Russian landscape to assist with the story-telling.  The story felt simple but clever.  Although, visually appealing, this film may bore many viewers because of the snail-like pacing.  I, personally, thought the film was brilliant in spite of the pacing.

Mamonov was brilliant in this film.  I was intrigued to learn that he is somewhat of a cult figure in Russia, having been a Russian rock star at one time.  His conversion to Orthodox Christianity may have compelled him to reunite with Director Pavel Lungin after leaving theater and film to settle in a small Russian village.  Mamonov was a perfect choice for the lead in this film, lending a bit of insanity and infusing life into his character with vividness.  He is supported by Sukhorukov, who feels credible as the somewhat vain but submissive Father Superior.  Dmitriy Dyuzhev takes on the role of antagonist, plotting against Father Anatoli for his pranks (and likely for his followers).  Dyuzhev adds some opposition without seeming sinister, which was important for his role.

The Island is a 112 minute Russian film.  The version I watched was unrated.  I am uncertain if this film has ever received a rating from the MPAA, but if it has not, it would probably be PG or PG-13.  The language is modest, the film contains no sexuality or nudity, and the only violence is at the beginning of the film and is fairly mild.  The film does deal with death and has some themes that younger audiences would not understand (they will probably just fall asleep or quickly lose interest due to the pacing).  Overall, there isn't much that viewers need to be concerned about if younger eyes happen to be nearby.  I would watch this film regardless of any concerns about content in that situation.

The Island is a visual, cerebral examination of life in a remote monastery in the far frigid reaches of the Russian empire.  Set in 1976, the film examines the life of a monk that has developed a reputation for healing (and an equal reputation for pranks).  The writing, casting, dialogue and cinematography cumulatively outweigh the sluggish pacing.  This film is woefully slow and not for all viewers.  You have to engage this film to truly appreciate it.  8/10.
