There are movies that you have to see several times just to decide if you like them, and not because they are so complicated or deep, but because they leave you with that weird vibe, like not knowing if you just saw something good or just a studio experiment that worked by chance, that's what happened to me with Constantin, the 2005 film, which I saw again recently with more desire to make sense of the whole mess, the first time I saw it in the cinema years ago I was a bit cold, I don't know if it was because Keanu Reeves has that face that always looks bored of being famous, but the truth is that over the years I ended up liking the movie, although it still has some things that don't convince me but I was still entertained from beginning to end and I have to admit it. Since it starts with the spear of Destiny and the man who seems possessed in Mexico, you already know that this is not going to be an action movie, they added some supernatural horror and even a bit of thriller, the thing with Constantine is that it never feels neither so dark to scare you nor so funny to take it lightly, it moves between those two worlds and at times it seems a weird mix of Marvel mixed with horror movie of the 90s.
Hay películas que uno tiene que ver varias veces solo para decidir si le gusta, y no porque sean tan complicadas o profundas, sino porque te dejan esa vibra rara, como de no saber si acabas de ver algo bueno o solo un experimento de estudio que funcionó medio de casualidad, así me pasó con Constantin, la de 2005, que la volví a ver hace poco con más ganas de encontrarle sentido a todo el enredo, la primera vez que la vi en el cine hace añosss quedé medio fría, no sé si porque Keanu Reeves tiene esa cara de siempre que parece aburrido de ser famoso, pero bueno lo cierto es que con los años me terminó gustando la peli, aunque todavía tenga unas cosas que no me terminan de convencer pero igual me entretuvo de principio a fin y eso hay que reconocerlo. Desde que arranca con el rollo de la lanza esa de la Destino y el man que parece poseído en México, ya uno sabe que esto no va a ser una peli cualquiera de acción, metieron algo de horror sobrenatural y hasta un poco de thriller que le ha sentado bien, el tema con Constantine es que nunca se siente ni tan oscura para asustarte ni tan cómica para tomarla a la ligera, se mueve entre esos dos mundos y a ratos parece una mezcla rara de marvel mezclado con película de terror de los 90.

Another thing that surprised me when I saw the movie again is how they put so many characters in so little time and still most of them remain in the memory, there is the detective Angela played by Rachel Weisz, very well by the way, she keeps the mystery during the whole movie and by the way she plays two roles because she is also her twin sister, which for me was unnecessary but well, that's Hollywood, the plot of the twins serves for Constantine to have an excuse to walk around with a suffering face all the time, What I did like was how they mix the religious with the profane and it's not forced, they seem to be part of the same mess, there is the angel Gabriel played by Tilda Swinton, that woman really steals every scene where she appears, she looks so real that one even believes she is a supernatural being, I don't like her character but that's good, because she is one of those angels sent to bother instead of helping, rarely do you see that in gringo movies, to be honest.
Lo que sí rescato a morir es el diseño de esas escenas cuando están en el infierno y todo se ve destruido pero sin caer en efectos baratos, esas tomas de Los Angeles todo podrido están buenísimas y los demonios tienen algunos detalles que no se ven tan de videojuego, ahí sí el equipo de efectos especiales y el director Francis Lawrence se pusieron serios y eso que esta peli no tiene la tecnología de ahorita, porque te mantienen pegado aunque todo se esté lleno de humo y bichos raros. Otra cosa que me sorprendió al ver la peli otra vez es cómo meten tantos personajes en tan poco tiempo y aún así la mayoría queda en la memoria, está la detective Angela que hace Rachel Weisz, muy bien por cierto, ella mantiene el misterio durante toda la peli y de paso hace dos papeles porque también es su hermana gemela, que para mí fue innecesario pero bueno, así es Hollywood, igual la trama de las gemelas sirve para que Constantine tenga una excusa de andar con cara de sufrimiento todo el rato, lo que sí me gustó fue cómo mezclan lo religioso con lo profano y no es forzado, más bien parecen partes del mismo despelote, está el ángel Gabriel que lo hace Tilda Swinton esa mujer de verdad se roba cada escena donde sale, se ve tan real que uno hasta cree que es un ser sobrenatural, su personaje no me termina de caer bien pero eso es bueno, porque es de esos ángeles mandados a molestar en vez de ayudar, rara vez uno ve eso en pelis gringas la verdad.

The movie is quite technical in terms of gadgets and tools, the blessed gold bullets, the lighter with the image of St. Benedict, the weird tattoos that are activated by touching the wrists together, all that adds to the mythology of the movie, they don't explain it much and I liked that touch of letting you imagine the rest, I think if they had over explained it would lose the charm. The weapons and the action scenes work well, especially the one in the mirror at the beginning and the one in the hospital when everything is turned upside down, here you can see the hand of someone who understands the visuals, but the rhythm is sometimes a bit choppy, like they jump between one thing and another like crazy and you lose the thread of why the characters are in such a mess, but I never got bored.
A Keanu Reeves le queda el papel de tipo perdido y cansado de vivir con todo lo que ha visto, ahora lo del cigarro a cada rato es un detalle que no entiendo cómo no lo sacaron en esa epoca pero bueno, aquí es parte del personaje y hasta le da sentido a la historia especialmente la parte cuando habla con el doctor y le tiran de una que tiene cáncer, eso sí logra hacer que uno hasta le agarre algo de compasión. La relación con Chas el personaje de Shia LaBeouf es de lo más normal, el típico sidekick medio inútil que solo sirve para que Constantine tenga a quien gritarle, pero de vez en cuando cae en gracia, aunque sigo pensando que el final con él no aporta gran cosa, una escena más de relleno que otra cosa. La película es bastante técnica en cuanto a gadgets y herramientas, las balas de oro bendecidas, el encendedor con la imagen de San Benito, los tatuajes raros que se activa tocando las muñecas juntos, todo eso le suma a la mitología de la peli, no lo explican mucho y me gustó ese toque de dejar que uno se imagine el resto, creo que si lo hubieran sobre explicado perdería el encanto. Igual las armas y las escenas de acción funcionan bien sobre todo la del espejo al inicio y la del hospital cuando todo se pone patas arriba, aquí si se ve la mano de alguien que entiende lo visual, pero el ritmo a veces es como cortado, como que saltan entre una cosa y otra a lo loco y uno pierde el hilo de por qué los personajes están metidos en tanto lío, pero igual nunca me aburrió.

The scene where Lucifer appears done by Peter Stormare steals the whole movie, the guy looks more like an insurance salesman than a demon and still scary, he has that presence that can burn everything with just a gesture, that detail of the feet full of black tar, the dirty white suit and the calm voice makes me not forget that sequence easily. What I didn't like is that the movie tries to put so many concepts and mythology in two hours that sometimes I feel that each character has its own separate movie and doesn't manage to connect at all, the idea of hell as a twisted mirror of the real world is great, but one is left wanting to see more of that side and less of the stilted conversations, plus the ending is kind of rushed, it seemed to me that they didn't know how to close all that stuff of celestial and demonic rules and opted for the typical redemption at the last minute. Maybe the closing with Constantine doing the good deed to save Angela's sister works for the character's arc, but the hell and sacrifice scene is a bit forced for my taste.
En cuanto a la historia, aquí sí tengo mis problemas porque aunque pegan bien ese ambiente noir, la trama se enreda con tanta explicación sobre el equilibrio entre los demonios y los ángeles y el bendito trato de no interferir directamente, parece que todos hacen trampa excepto Constantine, pero bueno nada de esto importa realmente porque al final todo se resuelve a puro golpe, agua bendita y cruce de miradas duras. La escena donde aparece Lucifer hecha por Peter Stormare se roba la película completa, el tipo parece más vendedor de seguros que demonio y aún así da miedo, tiene esa presencia de que puede quemar todo con solo un gesto, ese detalle de los pies llenos de brea negra, el traje blanco sucio y la voz calmada hace que no olvide esa secuencia fácilmente. Lo que no me gustó es que la película trata de meter tantos conceptos y mitología en dos horas que a veces siento que cada personaje tiene su propia película aparte y no alcanza a conectar del todo, la idea del infierno como un espejo retorcido del mundo real está genial, pero uno queda con ganas de ver más de ese lado y menos de las conversaciones rebuscadas, además el final es como apurado, me pareicó que no sabían cómo cerrar todo ese rollo de reglas celestiales y demoníacas y optaron por la típica redención a última hora. Igual el cierre con Constantine haciendo el buen acto para salvar la hermana de Angela funciona para el arco del personaje, pero la escena del infierno y el sacrificio queda medio forzada para mi gusto.
In the end Constantine is one of those movies that may not grab you like it did me, but I found that it has the style and personality to stand the test of time, it was never a classic nor is it going to be the best comic book adaptation, but if you look at it as a story with some dr noir, with very good visual scenes and a supernatural world that doesn't take it so seriously you'll have a good time, of course it has its script mistakes and flat acting at times, but it's one of those movies that if you catch it started on TV you'll stay watching it until the end just to see Keanu killing demons with relics and cigarettes hehehehe. My score for Constantine is 7.5/10 more out of affection for the eighties horror details that appear and because few movies nowadays dare with this kind of mix where it looks like nobody knew if they were making serious movies or just a visual excuse to show surprising effects, so recommended if you are looking for something different and don't mind being left with more questions than answers.
Al final Constantine es una de esas películas que puede que no te agarre de una como me pasó a mí, pero me di cuenta de que tiene estilo y personalidad para aguantar el paso del tiempo, nunca fue un clásico ni va a ser la mejor adaptación de cómics, pero si la ves como una historia con algo dr noir, con escenas visuales muy buenas y un mundo sobrenatural que no se lo toma tan en serio te la vas a pasar bien, claro que tiene sus errores de guión y actuaciones planas por momentos, pero es de esas pelis que si la agarras comenzada en la tele fijo te quedas viéndola hasta el final solo por ver a Keanu matando demonios a punta de reliquias y cigarrillos jejeje. Mi puntuación para Constantine es de 7.5/10 más por cariño a los detalles ochenteros de horror que aparecen y porque pocas pelis hoy día se atreven con este tipo de mezclas donde se ve como que nadie sabía si estaba haciendo cine serio o solo una excusa visual para mostrar efectos qe sorprendieran, así que recomendada si tienes ganas de algo diferente y no te importa quedarte con más preguntas que respuestas.
