Hello, people of the Internet. Today I want to talk to you about one of my favourite episodes of Courage the Cowardly Dog. It's the second part of episode 4 "Freaky Fred". I want to talk not only about the plot and artistic level of the episode, but also about the possible analogy or background that might be in it.

Hoy quiero hablarles de uno de mis episodios preferidos de Coraje, el Perro Cobarde, se trata de la segunda parte del episodio 4 "El Espeluznante Fred" No solo quiero hablar a nivel argumentativo y artístico del episodio, sino también de la posible analogía o trasfondo que hay en él.
First let's talk about the plot of the episode and its characteristics. The plot is simple: Muriel's nephew Fred, who in Eustace's opinion is very "creepy" goes to visit them for the "holidays" Muriel prepares to receive him with joy while Eustace is in a bad mood because of this (although in every episode he is haha) and Coraje is scared because of everything Eustace is saying about the boy and that aggravate the image that Coraje is getting of him.
Primero hablemos del argumento del episodio y sus características. El argumento es simple: El sobrino de Muriel, Fred, y quien en palabras de Justo es muy "espeluznante" va a visitarlos por las "vacaciones" Muriel se prepara para recibirlo con alegría mientras que Justo está de mal humor por esto (aunque en cada episodio lo está haha) y Coraje está asustado debido a todo lo que va diciendo Justo acerca del muchacho, lo cual agravan la imagen que va haciéndose Coraje de él.
In short, Fred is a mental patient suffering from a very serious Trichotillomania (irrepressible urge to shave the hair). And to make matters worse, Courage is locked in the bathroom by Eustace together with Fred who, seeing the poor little dog's fur, cannot resist shaving him.
En resumidas cuentas, Fred es un paciente mental que padece una muy grave Tricotilomanía (impulso irrefrenable de depilar/afeitar el cabello) Y para más inri, Coraje es encerrado en el baño por Justo junto a Fred, que al ver el pelaje del pobre perrito no puede resistirse a afeitarlo.
I have to say that as always, the show handles the horror very well. The soundtrack is great, and the episode starts with a narrative of Fred's thoughts, whose voice is attractive and at the same time terrifying, elegant but very serious, and his way of saying "Naughty" is quite disturbing (especially in his original language). The introduction of the character is kept hidden during the introduction of the plot until it is revealed along with Courage, that is, we start the episode from Fred's point of view, then we move to Courage's, and it is constantly changing because Fred's flashback we can see them from his perspective.
Tengo que decir que como siempre, la serie lleva muy bien el manejo del terror. El soundtrack es buenísimo, además el episodio empieza con una narrativa de los pensamientos de Fred cuya voz es atractiva y a la vez aterradora, elegante pero muy grave y además, su forma de decir "Travieso" es bastante perturbadora (sobre todo en su idioma original) La presentación del personaje la mantienen oculta durante la introducción de la trama hasta que se nos revela junto a Coraje, es decir, empezamos con el episodio desde el punto de vista de Fred, luego pasamos al de coraje y está en constante cambio debido a que los flashback de Fred podemos verlos desde su perspectiva.
Well, looking at it from a child's point of view, what frightened us in this episode was Fred's appearance and the way he behaved, staring and smiling in such a sinister way. As adults we have more details about why he generates that disturbing feeling (I already explained it from an "artistic" point of view as far as "cinema" is concerned). But, there are two aspects of Fred's origins, one is that he is inspired by an alleged serial killer called Emmanuelle Darri Martin who, apart from a huge disturbing smile, also suffered from Trichotillomania, with the difference that he killed his victims and then shaved their whole bodies. I think the resemblance is undeniable although I don't know if it is an image created by A.I or the case is real.
Ahora bien, viéndolo desde el punto de vista de un niño, lo que nos asustaba de este episodio era la apariencia de Fred y su forma de comportarse, mirando fijamente y sonriendo de esa forma tan siniestra. De adultos tenemos más detalles de porqué genera esa sensación de incomodidad (ya lo expliqué desde el punto de vista "artístico" a lo que a "cine" se refiere) Ahora bien, hay dos vertientes acerca de los orígenes de Fred, uno es que está inspirado en un supuesto asesino serial llamado Emmanuelle Darri Martin, quien además de una enorme sonrisa perturbadora, también padecía Tricotilomanía, con la diferencia que este mataba a sus víctimas para posteriormente afeitarles todo el cuerpo. Pienso que el parecido es innegable aunque la verdad no sé si es una imagen creada por I.A o el caso es real.
Besides, I did not find any information about the "real" case, but all the existing information points to the tv show, there is no information that does not cite it, and if so, where would the creator of the show get the information to get inspired to make Fred? Unless it is a legend that is not known for sure if it was based on real events or not.
Además no encontré información del caso "real" sino que toda la información existente apunta a la serie de Tv, no hay información que no la cite y siendo así ¿de donde obtendría la información el creador de la serie para inspirarse y hacer a Fred? A menos que sea una leyenda que no se sabe con certeza si estaba basada en hechos reales o no.
Another hypothesis suggests that the show's creator wanted to allude to child abuse with this episode, as Courage, who is a puppy, symbolises innocence and is the victim. The way Muriel ignores Courage's refusals to be alone with Fred is one of the ways in which many parents ignore abuse from family or friends towards their children (most of the time it is not turning a blind eye but not paying enough attention to their children's body language) and even she mistakes Courage's refusals and her fear for "bad manners". It is like when a child does not want to greet a certain person with a kiss or hug and the parents say "this child is very rude" and subsequently force him or her to greet the alleged aggressor with proximity.
Otra hipótesis sugiere que el creador de la serie quería hacer alusión al abuso infantil con este episodio, ya que Coraje, el cual es un perrito, simbolizaría la inocencia y es la víctima. La forma en la que Muriel ignora las negativas de Coraje a estar solo con Fred es una de las formas en la que muchos padres ignoran el abuso de familiares o amigos hacia sus hijos (la mayoría de las veces no es hacer la vista gorda sino que no ponen suficiente atención al lenguaje corporal de sus hijos) e incluso ella confunde las negativas de Coraje y su miedo con "malos modales". Es como cuando un niño no quiere saludar con un beso o abrazo a determinada persona y los padres dicen "este niño es muy mal educado" o "no sé porqué es tan odioso" y posteriormente le obligan a saludar con proximidad al presunto agresor.
Once they are locked in the bathroom, Courage runs away from him at all times and even tries to ask Muriel for help, but she continues to ignore the situation and at the end of it all, although Courage gets help through external levels, he still suffers damage (being almost all shaved) except for a memory of Fred, a signature on his fur that reads "With love, Fred" is a sign or mark of the event in question, and that even if his hair grows out, Courage will not forget. I guess I'm not alone in thinking that there are many similarities between the episode and the behaviours or situations with child abuse, what do you think?
Una vez que se quedan encerrados en el baño, Coraje huye de él en todo momento e incluso intenta pedir ayuda a Muriel, pero ella sigue ignorando la situación y al final de todo, aunque Coraje consigue ayuda a través de niveles externos, aún así sufre daños (quedando casi todo rapado) a excepción de un recuerdo de Fred, una firma en su pelaje que reza "Con amor, Fred" es una muestra o marca del evento en cuestión, y que aunque crezca el pelo, Coraje no olvidará. Creo que no soy la única en pensar que hay muchas similitudes entre el episodio y los comportamientos o situaciones con el abuso infantil ¿ustedes que opinan?
But getting the hypotheses and analogies out of the way and seeing the episode as it is (above) it ends up being an episode as creepy as it is funny, since the funny part is Eustace who supposedly went to the hardware store to buy material to fix the bathroom lock, and instead of doing that he goes to the movies, to the beach and other places so as not to be near Fred, that together with Muriel's comments "Eustace will come to fix the lock" causes a lot of laughter.
Pero quitando de en medio las hipótesis y analogías y viendo el episodio tal cual está (por encima) termina siendo un episodio tan espeluznante como gracioso, ya que la parte cómica es la de Justo quien supuestamente fue a la ferretería a comprar material para arreglar la cerradura del baño, y en lugar de hacer eso se va al cine, a la playa y a otros lugares con tal de no estar cerca de Fred, eso aunado a los comentarios de Muriel "Justo ya vendrá a arreglar la cerradura" causa mucha risa.
