Now, how can we do this? Shinji Ikari is a young man of about 14 years old who gets caught up in a war of humanity against beings called Angels. This is what we know at the beginning. He returns to see his father, who is a scientist working for the army of Tokyo-3. This is an organization dedicated to fighting against the "Angels." The objective of the Angels is not very clear from the beginning, but we see how this young man becomes the pilot of the EVAs, which are this kind of mechas used by humanity to fight the angels. Although Shinji is very inexperienced, for some reason that is not fully revealed in this movie, he is one of the few who can pilot an EVA and specifically his EVA, which is EVA-01, a high-tech machinery that combines bio-cyberpunk elements to create machinery capable of facing beings that seem supernatural or otherworldly. This could already be the premise of any science fiction movie, but Evangelion goes a little further, showing us the seams of the character but in a psychological way, of this protagonist Shinji Ikari.
Because far from being a hero, Shinji is presented to us as an ordinary child, perhaps a very cowardly child, traumatized by life's situations and this distance he has from his father. Throughout the course of the film we see how relationships with different characters are formed, how changing cities affects him and trying by all methods to get closer to his father without truly achieving it, only having the bond through these gigantic creatures called EVAs and their work, showing us Shinji rather as a tool to try to save humanity, than as a 14-year-old child who wants to recover the bond with his father once again. This is an excellent movie to immerse ourselves in the universe of Evangelion, because it lays the foundations for us and leaves us with many intrigues and questions to resolve, being the perfect beginning of what shapes up to be a very tense saga, rich in psychological themes, moral and philosophical debates, perhaps more so in this time when we question how far technology can take us.
On a sound and audiovisual level, this work stands out enormously, using indeed very striking visual effects for any teenager, even a bit of fanservice, but without losing sight of that artistic aspect. And on a sound level it stands out excessively, because far from an epic soundtrack for the climactic moments, it tries to go for subtleties, leaving minimalist pieces in very raw moments, something that contrasts with what the viewer sees, but transports us to the psychology of the characters who try to save the world, but through the suffering of these kids who must pilot the EVAs. Evangelion is undoubtedly a work that has transcended the collective imagination and gone beyond the anime industry to become a cult classic for anyone who enjoys audiovisuals and in this case cinema. Aquí seguimos sí la historia del protagonista, vamos comprendiendo mucho mejor el mundo donde se desenvuelve, porque si disfrutamos de la serie de los de inicios de los 2000, esta película vuelve a meternos de lleno en la historia. Aquí exploramos los matices psicológicos de el protagonista más que nunca.
Ahora, ¿cómo podemos hacer esto? Shinji Ikari es un joven de unos 14 años que se ve envuelto en una guerra de la humanidad contra unos seres llamados ángeles. Esto es lo que sabemos hasta un principio. Él regresa a ver a su padre, quien es un científico que trabaja para el ejército de Tokio-3. Está es una organización que se dedica a combatir contra los "Ángeles". El objetivo de los Ángeles no queda muy claro desde un principio, pero vamos viendo cómo este joven se convierte en el piloto de los EVA, que son esta especie de mechas que utiliza la humanidad para combatir a los ángeles. Si bien Shinji es muy inexperto, por alguna razón que en esta película no se nos revela del todo, es uno de los pocos que puede manejar un EVA y en específico su EVA, que es el EVA-01, una maquinaria de alta tecnología que combina elementos bio-cyberpunk para crear una maquinaria capaz de enfrentar a seres que parecen sobrenaturales o de otro mundo.
Ya esto podría ser la premisa de cualquier película de ciencia ficción, pero Evangelion va un poco más allá, nos muestra las costuras del personaje pero de forma psicológica, de este protagonista Shinji Ikari.
Porque lejos de ser un héroe, Shinji se nos presenta como un niño común, quizás un niño muy cobarde, traumado por las situaciones de la vida y esta distancia que tiene de su padre. A través del transcurso de la película vemos cómo se van formando las relaciones con distintos personajes, cómo le sienta el cambiar de ciudad e intentar por todos los métodos acercarse a su padre sin conseguirlo realmente, solo teniendo el vínculo a través de estas gigantescas criaturas llamadas EVA y su trabajo, mostrándonos más bien a Shinji como una herramienta para intentar salvar a la humanidad, que como un niño de 14 años que quiere otra vez recuperar el vínculo con su padre. Esta es una excelente película para sumergirnos en el universo de Evangelion, porque nos sienta las bases y nos deja con muchas intrigas y preguntas por resolver, siendo el inicio perfecto de lo que pinta para ser una saga muy tensa, rica en temas psicológicos, debates morales y filosóficos, quizás más en este tiempo que nos cuestionamos hasta dónde puede llevarnos la tecnología.
A nivel sonoro y audiovisual, esta obra destaca muchísimo, utilizando sí efectos visuales muy llamativos para cualquier adolescente, incluso un poco de fanservice, pero sin perder de la mira ese aspecto artístico. Y a nivel sonoro destaca en demasía, porque lejos de una banda sonora épica para los momentos álgidos, intenta irse por las sutilezas, dejar piezas minimalistas en momentos muy crudos, cosa que contrasta con lo que ve el espectador, pero nos transporta a la psicología de los personajes que intentan salvar el mundo, pero a través del sufrimiento de estos chicos que deben pilotar los EVAs. Evangelion sin duda es una obra que ha trascendido el imaginario colectivo y ha salido más allá de la industria del anime para convertirse en un clásico de culto para cualquiera que disfrute lo audiovisual y en este caso el cine.
