   A masterpiece….love for food, spouse and family

   

   After seeing the spy thriller series Special Ops: Lioness that featured Zoe Saldaña as a main character, the streaming site I use recommended another series of hers for my viewing pleasure. It's a Netflix series released in October 2022 and for the life of me, I don't know how I missed it. Well, it's never too late to see a movie so I immediately jumped on board to binge-watch it.

   From Scratch (2022) is an American romance miniseries of eight episodes based on Tembi Locke’s Memoir titled From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily and Finding Home. It's a journey that follows the beginning, middle, and end of the love relationship between artist Amy (played by Zoe Saldaña) and Italian chef, Lino (played by Eugenio Mastrandrea).

   The opening scene reveals Amy arriving Florence, Italy with her bags to study art in a short interim before proceeding to law school when she returns to Texas, US. As she settles into her routine, she meets an art enthusiast and they begin a relationship. At almost the same time, her friend introduces her to Lino, an Italian chef who immediately falls for her.

   To win her over, Lino invites her to his restaurant and cooks for her. They spend more time together and their attraction becomes intense. Then Amy's father travels to Italy to see his daughter and she takes him to Lino's restaurant while inviting her boyfriend to meet her father. This scenario sparks a quarrel between Amy and Lino because the restaurant is his space and he wants her to introduce him to her father and not the boyfriend.

   On Amy's last day in Italy, she meets Lino under the rain and they kiss, acknowledging their love for each other. Rather than let Amy return to Texas, Lino takes a bold step and relocates with her. How will Lino survive in a foreign environment with prejudices against Sicilians? Will his relationship with Amy stand the test of time??

   Review

   Being a romance by Netflix, I assumed it would follow a cliché storyline. Yes, it's Zoe Saldaña and she makes her audience happy with her performance. However, this miniseries turned out to be amazing in an unexpected way. The plot is all romance but focused on the journey of the relationship. The usual romance drama would tell the story of the couple's meeting, then they face a conflict and it ends with a resolution and their union.

   

   

   

   

   In From Scratch, Netflix takes us through the journey of Amy and Lino's relationship. It begins as a swoony romance in its first and second episodes and quickly changes gear to become a heartrending story of loss and resilience by the last episode.

   The storytelling is compelling, inviting viewers to see the intense attraction between the couple, the beauty of art and life in both Florence, Italy and Texas, US, the joy of families and the sensuality and care that goes into food preparation. The audience is immersed in every scene to witness both the delights and the tears when life throws some curveballs at the couple and their families.

   

   

   From Scratch is an exquisite love story. The cast performed outstandingly, especially Zoe Saldaña and Eugenio Mastrandrea. Their chemistry is fantastic and believable. They deliver such a brilliant performance that feels so real from frustration to jealousy to mental exhaustion and her undying love for each other. The supporting cast is impressive as well. The language is a mix of English and Italian. There are scenes where the cast conversed in Italian so I use subtitles to understand their dialogues.

   The landscapes and sceneries depicting the beauty in parts of Italy and the US are breathtaking and add depth to the visuals. I enjoyed watching this show as it positively warmed my heart, encouraging me to never take any moment for granted.

   Overall, I'll say From Scratch is an amazing work of art that focuses on the art of love, cooking and painting. It's a celebration of art from every angle and worth watching. I'll give it 4 stars out of 5.

   I had been trying to watch a miniseries for a while, many people had already recommended it to me and since it came out it had caught my attention, however, between one thing and another, time goes by and I forget, so I have many movies to watch. So, between yesterday afternoon and this morning, two days that have been the best. I dedicated myself to watch this miniseries that contains 8 chapters, which are quite fast, funny, entertaining and cover a genre that I rarely see as it is the romantic, drama. For me each chapter leaves a teaching and with the desire to continue watching the next chapter to see what will happen in the next.

   This miniseries is known as From Scratch, which from the beginning you can notice that it touches many aspects that we can see and live in real life and perhaps many have identified with this miniseries, since each family group will have their beliefs, their orders, their rules and that will always have to be respected and obeyed, a love relationship can be a little complicated, but when love is stronger, sincere it will always last and no matter all the adversities that you have to go through, as well as moving to another country and live new experiences, cultures, traditions is not easy and many other issues that characterize this miniseries, so this is where the real adventure begins.

   Tenía tiempo intentando ver una miniserie que muchos ya me la habían recomendado y desde que salió me llamaba un poco la atención, sin embargo, entre una y otra cosa se me pasa el tiempo y se me olvida, así tengo muchas películas por ver. Entonces, entre la tarde de ayer y la mañana de hoy, dos días que han sido lo máximo. Me dediqué a ver esta miniserie que contiene 8 capítulos, que son bastante rápido, divertidos, entretenidos y abarcan un género que muy poco veo como lo es el romántico, drama. Para mí cada capítulo deja una enseñanza y con las ganas de seguir viendo el siguiente capítulo para ver qué sucederá en el próximo.

   Esta miniserie es conocida como Desde cero, la cual desde un principio se pueden notar que toca muchos aspectos que podemos ver y vivir en la vida real y quizás muchos se han sentido identificado con esta miniserie, ya que cada grupo familiar tendrá sus creencias, sus órdenes, sus normas y eso siempre se tendrá que respetar y obedecer, una relación de amor puede ser un poco complicada, pero cuando el amor es más fuerte, sincero siempre durara y no importa todas las adversidades que se tenga que pasar, como también mudarse a otro país y vivir nuevas experiencias, culturas, tradiciones no es nada fácil y muchos otros temas que caracterizan esta miniserie, así que aquí es donde comienza la verdadera aventura.

   Since I started watching it I was a little attentive, since things happen in a calm, relaxed way, where little by little those things that impact us appear, however, we can notice a lot of scenes where happiness, sadness, moments of laughter and sadness are present. Love, the central theme, is present throughout this miniseries, especially the adventures and challenges that the characters go through, each of those stages where they gradually get to know each other, gaining trust, affection, friendship and above all respect for each other, and all the obstacles they have to overcome as a couple and above all achieve each objective and goals together.

   Desde que comencé a verla estaba un poco atento, ya que las cosas pasan de una manera tranquila, relajada, donde poco a poco van apareciendo esas cosas que nos impactan, sin embargo, podemos notar una gran cantidad de escenas donde está presente la felicidad, la tristeza, momentos de muchas risas y así como también de tristeza. El amor, el tema central, está presente en toda esta miniserie, sobre todo las aventuras y desafíos que pasan los personajes, cada una de esas etapas donde poco a poco se van conociendo, ganando la confianza, el cariño, la amistad y sobre todo el respeto uno al otro, y todos los obstáculos que tienen que ir superando como pareja y sobre todo lograr cada objetivo y metas juntos.

   We noticed moments where a life as a couple is not easy, where everything can not always be perfect, as there are some problems, such as the case of being from different cultures, the way of thinking of relatives, where a bad decision can cause much damage, yet every relationship must fight to achieve these proposed dreams. Another aspect that impressed me and was really the saddest is the subject of diseases, something that is so delicate and it is here where the mood can go to the ground with just one piece of news, where there comes a point that could change everything and it becomes dark.

   Notamos momentos donde una vida de pareja tampoco es nada fácil, donde todo no siempre puede ser perfecto, ya que existe algunos problemas, como lo es el caso de ser de culturas distintas, la forma de pensar de los familiares, donde una mala decisión puede causar mucho daño, aun así toda relación debe luchar hasta lograr dichos sueños propuestos. Otro de los aspectos que me impresiono y de verdad que fue lo más triste son el tema de las enfermedades, algo que es tan delicado y es aquí donde los ánimos se pueden irse al suelo con tan solo una noticia, donde llega un punto que pude cambiar todo y se vuelve oscuro.

   Esta serie cuenta con varios actores donde principalmente recae en dos personajes, que nos han sorprendido, ya que cada uno tiene una vida distinta, una personalidad y sobre todo como ven las cosas, sin embargo, por cosas del destino esta relación se va más allá, donde el amor juega un papel muy importante y sobre todo por cada una de las acciones y manera como se tratan. Una de ellas es la famosa actriz conocida como Zoe Saldana quien es conocida como Amy Wheeler, una joven que tiene mucho talento, activa, sin embargo, ese viaje que realiza su vida cambia totalmente donde tendrá que conocer y defenderse ante el mundo. Lino, nuestro otro personaje, que realiza un gran trabajo y un papel muy importante para mí, donde su vida como chef le ha permitido hacer muchas cosas, superarse, pero su estado de salud no es el mejor.

   A miniseries that I liked a lot, I laughed, I also learned a little about this kind of situations that people can live when they change countries, cities, new customs, language, traditions and above all the way to take things, never give up, keep going and do not lose hope in any situation. Do things with happiness, love, affection with your partner and those people who will become the love of your life and will form a whole family, it will come at the right time. Also, I think that if one is causing any pain, not working or a bad moment in any situation, it is best to move away and not interfere with the beliefs and customs of others.

   Una miniserie que me gusto bastante, me reí, como también aprendí un poco con respecto a este tipo de situaciones que pueden vivir las personas cuando cambian de país, ciudades nuevas costumbres, idioma, tradiciones y sobre todo la manera de llevar las cosas, nunca rendirse, seguir adelante y no perder las esperanzas ante cualquier situación. Hacer las cosas con felicidad, amor, cariño con tu pareja y esas personas que se convertirán en el amor de tu vida y llegara a formar toda una familia, llegara en el momento indicado. Además, pienso que si uno está causando algún dolor, no funciona o un mal momento ante cualquiera situación, lo mejor es apartarse, alejarse y así no interferir con las creencias y costumbres de los demás.

   The series "Desde Cero" has perhaps not generated too much buzz. Its actors are little known and the story is simple and at the same time a little strange, since it takes place in the United States and Italy almost simultaneously, but from my point of view, "Desde Cero" brings us closer to such a daily reality that it is difficult to remain oblivious to the experiences of the characters that give life to it.

   My dear friends of Hive, today I bring you this story that at times I found fascinating, funny, and at other times I was very moved.

   The series itself deals with many aspects of a person's life, so it is very easy to identify with it. Sus actores son poco conocidos y la historia es sencilla y al mismo tiempo un poco extraña, ya que transcurre en Estados Unidos e Italia casi de manera simultánea, pero desde mi punto de vista, “Desde Cero” nos acerca a una realidad tan cotidiana, que difícilmente podamos mantenernos ajenos a las vivencias de los personajes que le dan vida.

   Mis queridos amigos de Hive, hoy les acerco esta historia que por momentos me pareció fascinante, divertida, y por otros momentos me conmovió muchísimo.

   La serie en sí, aborda muchos aspectos de la vida de una persona, por lo que es muy fácil sentirse identificado con ella. De esta manera, nos habla de los mandatos familiares que indican que hay que estudiar tal o cual profesión; de la dificultad que implica no seguir esos mandatos; de enamorarse a larga distancia; de fascinarse con un país que no es la tierra natal; de patologías crónicas; del deseo de formar una familia; de la dinámica de una familia; de la aceptación por parte de los padres de las propias elecciones; y de algunos otros temas de esta naturaleza, que a veces se hacen tan cotidianos que terminamos por ignorarlos y por vivir con ellos sin siquiera tener la posibilidad de frenar por un segundo y analizarlos.

   Amy is a girl who is going to live for a while in Italy to take an art course. She should stay in the United States, precisely in Los Angeles, to follow in her father's footsteps and become a lawyer. But the reality is that she does not want that for her life and she confirms it when in Florence she is fascinated by the world of art, which clearly she had not yet tasted.

   In this city she meets two boys, a very wealthy one who is able to offer her all the material things she could wish for, in exchange for being next to someone whose ego is bigger than the Italian art world itself.

   And she also meets Lino, a humble chef whose steps had been taken with difficulty but firmly. His father had rejected him for not staying with him on the farm working the land and had closed the doors of his home and his heart to him. As a good Sicilian, Lino's father prevented his wife and daughter from having any relationship with Lino (in the south of Italy to this day, families are so conservative that they even maintain customs such as patriarchy (where the only valid thing is the word of the man, the absolute head of the family).

   Lino, with gentleness and respect, approaches Amy and manages to win her heart. Thus, they go together to Los Angeles and there they begin to build their family together. Lino totally separated from his parents (not by his decision but by his parents) and Amy at first goes through something familiar, but her father, stepmother and mother slowly begin to accept everything, to the point of treating Lino as a son.

Ella debería quedarse en Estados Unidos, en Los Ángeles precisamente, para seguir los pasos de su papá y recibirse de abogada. Pero la realidad es que ella no quiere eso para su vida y lo confirma cuando en Florencia queda fascinada con el mundo del arte, que claramente aún no había saboreado.

   En esta ciudad conoce a dos chicos, uno muy adinerado que es capaz de ofrecerle todo lo material que ella pudiera desear, a cambio de estar junto a alguien cuyo ego es más grande que el propio mundo artístico de Italia.

   Y también conoce a Lino, un humilde chef cuyos pasos habían sido dados con dificultad pero con firmeza. Su padre lo había rechazado por no quedarse con el en la finca trabajando la tierra y le había cerrado las puertas de su casa y de su corazón. Como buen siciliano, el padre de Lino impedía que su esposa e hija mantuvieran relación con Lino (en el sur de ITalia hasta el día de hoy las familias son tan conservadoras que hasta mantienen costumbres como el patriarcado (ese en el que lo único válido es la palabra del hombre, jefe absoluto de la familia).

   Lino, con suavidad y respeto se acerca a Amy y logra ganar su corazón. De este modo, se van juntos a Los Ángeles y allí empiezan a construir juntos su familia. Lino totalmente separado de sus padres (no por decisión suya sino de sus padres) y Amy al principio atraviesa algo familiar, pero su padre, su madrastra y su madre lentamente empiezan a aceptar todo, hasta el punto de tratar a Lino como un hijo.

   Up to this point we see situations that are not too problematic, that is, yes there are setbacks, but they all maintain a certain balance with the progress of this couple, who quickly steal the viewer's heart.

   However, at one point in the story, Lino is diagnosed with cancer in his knee, and the whole series changes course.

   A roller coaster of emotions begins, revolving around the health of this good man, who does everything for his wife and daughter, who is adopted because she was unable to have a baby naturally due to Lino's chemotherapy.

   In all this already intense maelstrom, Amy manages to get Lino to see his family, which adds a touch of bittersweet flavors to the episodes.

   At times the boy is fine, the evolution is very good, but there comes a point when this changes, and everything becomes quite dark.

   Hasta aquí vemos situaciones que no son demasiado problemáticas, es decir, sí que hay contratiempos, pero todos mantienen cierto equilibrio con los progresos de esta pareja, que rápidamente se roban el corazón del espectador.

   Sin embargo, en un momento de la historia, a Lino le diagnostican un cáncer en la rodilla, y toda la serie cambia su rumbo.

   Comienza una montaña rusa de emociones que giran en torno a la salud de este buen hombre, que hace todo por su esposa y por su hija, a quien adoptan por no haber podido tener un bebé de manera natural a consecuencia de la quimioterapia aplicada a Lino.

   En toda esa vorágine ya intensa, Amy logra que Lino vea a su familia, lo cual añade un toque de sabores agridulces a los episodios.

   Por momentos el chico está bien, la evolución es muy buena, pero llega un punto en que esto cambia, y todo se torna bastante oscuro.

   As I commented previously, being so much about the life of any person, I think it is a nice series to watch, but of course, if you do not like strong stories that can lead you to spend bad times in front of the screen, if I were you, I would think twice before watching it, because just in everyday life there is everything: happiness, sadness, disappointment, growth, falls.

   However, I recommend it more than not, since I believe that not only are we all exposed to these situations from the one who "takes the hit" at some point in life, but sometimes we can be the person who is generating some pain in a loved one by schemes or structures, and watching this kind of stories can help to open our eyes.

   The interesting thing is that it is not 100% fiction, but it is based on the bibliography of the American actress and author, Tembi Locke, as indicated by elperiodico.com.

   As a bonus, in the TV Show they speak both English and Italian, which I thought was wonderful. I really enjoy it when they mix languages like that, especially in cities today as big as Florence or Los Angeles, as that's what you experience when you visit places like that.

   Como comentaba previamente, al ser cuestiones tan de la vida de cualquier persona, creo que es una bonita serie para ver, pero claro, si no te gustan las historias fuertes, que te puedan llevar a pasar malos ratos frente a la pantalla, si fuera vos, me lo pensaría dos veces antes de verla, ya que justamente en lo cotidiano hay de todo: felicidad, tristeza, decepción, crecimiento, caídas.

   Sin embargo, es más lo que la recomiendo que lo que no, ya que creo que todos no sólo nos exponemos a esas situaciones desde el que “recibe el golpe” en algún momento de la vida, sino que a veces podemos ser la persona que está generando algún dolor en algún ser querido por esquemas o estructuras, y ver este tipo de historias puede ayudar a abrir los ojos.

   Lo interesante es que no se trata al 100% de una ficción, sino que está basada en la bibliografía de la actriz y autora estadounidense, Tembi Locke, tal como indica elperiodico.com.

   Como algo extra, en la serie hablan tanto en inglés como en italiano, lo cual me pareció maravilloso. Disfruto mucho cuando se mezclan así los idiomas, sobre todo en ciudades hoy tan grandes como Florencia o Los Ángeles, ya que es lo que se vive cuando se visitan lugares así.
