New ways of using them. Dozens of new platforms or channels. Catalogues on demand. Streaming. Investments that go hand in hand with cinematic investments. Actors of cry. Exceptional directors. Talented screenwriters.
The inevitable risk is to lose precious gems or to waste time looking at good but not exceptional products.
3 years ago Netflix launched one of these gems, lost in the meanders of its catalogue, advertised less than other titles and with less appeal than other series with more appeal.
After 3 years G.L.O.W. arrived with the third season which will be followed by at least a fourth one considering how much the threads of the protagonists' lives have been left unfinished in the season finale.
G.L.O.W. could be in a third category compared to the 2 mentioned before. A gem that with its third season has made us waste some time.
Yes, because the first two years of the series on America's most beloved wrestlers were pure gold, but the third one made us regret those 5-6 hours spent in front of the screen. We could have used them better or we could have just watched something else.
And instead, taken from the amazing adventures told in the first 2 seasons, we got caught up in a third season that promised well but that turned out to be a saber, abulic and without bite.
And yet the premises were the right ones. Change of location, new challenges, even more messy lives, difficult choices.
The feeling is that even though we have told so much, we ended up not telling it well and not telling enough.
Almost all the protagonists have made flights of fancy. Those who found love and those who lost it, those who celebrated and those who had to limit their ambitions and yet something broke in the feeling between the spectator and the girls of G.L.O.W.
It seemed like a crazy race towards themes that had to be told. The sob story, the career woman, the abuse victim, the LGBT world, immigration.
It all seemed a little forced and sometimes redundant.
There were enough flashes and good things to give G.L.O.W. another chance with season four.
Impossible to abandon them in short but difficult to forgive this downsizing so strong and worrying.
Postpone it until September, with love.
Nuovi modi di fruizione. Decine di nuove piattaforme o canali. Cataloghi on demand. Streaming. Investimenti che viaggiano di pari passo con quelli cinematografici. Attori di grido. Registi d'eccezione. Sceneggiatori di talento.
Il rischio inevitabile è di perdersi delle gemme preziosissime o di buttare via del tempo utile guardando prodotti buoni ma non eccezionali.
3 anni fa Netflix aveva lanciato una di queste gemme, persa nei meandri del suo catalogo, pubblicizzata meno di altri titoli e di richiamo minore rispetto ad altre serie con maggiore appeal.
Dopo 3 anni G.L.O.W. è approdata con la terza stagione alla quale seguirà almeno una quarta visto quanto i fili delle vite delle protagoniste siano stati lasciati in sospeso nel finale di stagione.
G.L.O.W. potrebbe inserirsi in una terza categoria rispetto alle 2 citate prima. Una gemma che con la sua terza stagione ci ha fatto perdere un po di tempo.
Eh si. perchè le prime 2 annate della serie sulle wrestler più amate d'America sono state oro purissimo, ma la terza ci ha fatto rimpiangere quelle 5-6 ore trascorse davanti allo schermo. Avremmo potuto utilizzarle meglio o semplicemente avremmo potuto guardare altro.
E invece, presi dalle mirabolanti avventure raccontate nelle prime 2 stagioni ci siamo fatti incastrare in una terza stagione che prometteva bene ma che è risultata sciapa, abulica e senza mordente.
Eppure le premesse erano di quelle giuste. Cambio di location, nuove sfide, vite ancora più incasinate, scelte difficili.
La sensazione è che però pur avendo raccontato tanto si sia finito per non raccontare bene e non raccontare abbastanza.
Quasi tutte le protagoniste hanno fatto voli pindarici. Chi ha trovato l'amore e chi l'ha perso, chi ha festeggiato e chi ha dovuto limitare le proprie ambizioni eppure qualcosa si è rotto nel feeling fra lo spettatore e le ragazze di G.L.O.W.
E' sembrata una matta corsa verso temi che si dovevano raccontare. La storia strappalacrime, la donna in carriera, la vittima di abusi, il mondo LGBT, l'immigrazione.
Tutto è sembrato un pò forzato e a tratti ridondante.
Di guizzi e cose belle ce ne sono state e sono state abbastanza da dare a G.L.O.W. un'altra chance con la quarta stagione.
Impossibile abbandonarle insomma ma difficile perdonare questo ridimensionamento cosi forte e preoccupante.
Rimandate a settembre, con affetto.
