The New York of the late sixties was a place that was very convulsed basically for two very important reasons. The first was because of the racial segregation that still existed in the city and the only place where African-Americans could be “calm” was in Harlem and all this was thanks to their godfather, Bumpy Johnson. And the second was because of the Italian mafias that controlled the entire city, these families which were called the “Cosa Nostra”, were the people who controlled absolutely everything that happened in the streets and outside of them. The series covers the confrontation between these Harlem gangs against the Italian-Americans for the control of the entire criminal world of the area.
As you read in the title, this series has just finished its fourth season, one that did not go unnoticed thanks to the plot full of betrayals and the typical violence applied by these people. It must be said that all this is based on real facts, almost all the main characters that appear here were part of the criminal history of that New York. Obviously there are many things that were altered for the sake of the plot, be it actions, deaths, the same dialogues, behaviors, etc. This series is probably one of the most underrated and little known that there is, and the amount of people who have heard of it is really low, hence why I bring it to you today.
Characters like Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, the Genovese, Gambino, Bonanno, Lucchese and Colombo families; the Black Panthers, a radical political movement of those years; Truman Capote, the great writer; Frank Lucas, one of the most notorious heroin dealers of the time, among others, are some of those who appear in this series and especially in this fourth season. At this point everything is more settled, many betrayals have happened throughout the story but still there are still quarrels between some bosses and is that in the end the power is everything and get it is the ultimate goal of all these people. It is for all this that the plot never gets boring because there are always issues that are not completely closed, when you think that a problem is solved then 2 more appear.
The series is violent because that is the nature of the characters but in this fourth season I feel that this has dropped a little, what was seen was more like a reorganization of the power factors before the departure of some characters from previous seasons. In the end and in addition to the power also comes into play a lot of ego and is that these men could not look bad to their subordinates so they always had to respond to any threat, no matter how small it was. Living like that must have been a real hell.
A lot of drama because the stories of some characters were always surrounded by that; a lot of action because there are always attacks, car bombs, murders, attempted murders, fights; and most importantly a lot of historical and social context because it helps us to know how those years were so difficult for many people and to understand many things, such as the infinite power that these families had and the constant struggles for their rights and equality of African Americans. In short, a great series and a good season that gives to assume that a fifth installment will come. I recommend it to everyone, it is very entertaining and interesting. So far an 8/10. It is very worthwhile.
We continue with the recommendations to which we are accustomed and today I bring you a series that I am sure very few people know but look, HOW GOOD IT IS. It is the typical story of mafias, power, money, drugs, etc. that hooks you in such a way that you thank God it is a series and not a movie so you can enjoy it a little more.
I confess that I stumbled upon this series by chance, having nothing to do with it, and the truth is that I do not regret it at all. Another factor to take into account is the protagonist, none other than Forest Whitaker, an actor more than recognized for having participated in dozens of films, The Last King of Scotland, for example, and therefore already guaranteed good performances. An incredible series that I will tell you about next.
Let's start with saying that this series is based on true events and as I said at the beginning starring by Whitaker, an Oscar winner as well. Part of this story is about this nefarious character, Bumpy Johnson, one of the most important and prominent mobsters in the United States in the sixties. In addition to this, it is a series that reflects the serious social crisis that the United States was experiencing at that time with reference to racism and human rights.
A series that has 10 chapters in its first season which seeks to put together the life of "Bumpy" after he gets out of prison where he was imprisoned for 10 years. Apparently life on the streets has changed a lot and when he realizes this, he will start a fight to regain the power he once had.
Part of the power that can now be seen in the streets of this popular New York neighborhood is in the hands of "Chin" one of the most important heads of the Italian Mafia or "Cosa Nostra". Vincent D'Onofrio is another of the great actors who make life in this story, perhaps not of Whitaker's stature but a very good actor who masterfully interprets this character who also scourged the streets of New York.
Another angle of these years that run parallel and are also touched in this series are all the social movements that were born in those years as the "Nation of Islam" of the hand of Elijah Muhammad and Malcom X as well as those great voices against racial segregation such as Martin Luther King Jr.
And a third surprise that brings us this spectacular series is the great actor Giancarlo Esposito, more than recognized for his role in Breaking Bad as Gus Fring or the most recent in The Mandalorian as Moff Gideon. In this role we forget a little these characters that I named and it happens for how well he acts and interprets his characters who in this opportunity embodies Adam Clayton Powell Jr, the first African American to be elected as a congressman in the United States. Without a doubt, having Esposito in the casting of a project gives it a gigantic added value.
There is a reality and it is that this series is a great success from beginning to end because from the first chapter there are elements that allow us to get hooked and because they are issues that today, unfortunately, are still current in our societies. With first class performances and a first class casting there is no room for bad performances because all of them, yes as you read, ALL of them are exceptional. From Whitaker giving a great performance to a very well built congressman Clayton, this series will surprise us chapter after chapter.
The rivalry between "Chin" and "Bumpy" is masterful, always accompanied by good dialogues that manage to hold on to the story and understand very well how those turbulent times were. In short, a 10/10 series that deserves to be seen by all those who like this kind of stories of drugs and murders and with certain winks to a reality that was very raw and that continues to be protagonist today.
This series premiered in mid-2019 and as I told you it has 10 episodes. In April of this year, on the 18th to be exact, the second season was released and to date is in its third chapter. A series more than recommended. I leave the trailer for you to get familiar and understand a little more.

›Godfather of Harlem: Why I Really like this Show@filotasriza31892d
Today i am gonna talk about godfather of Harlem, a crime show that released in 2019 but season 2 just aired. That's why i think it's a great opportunity to talk once again about this show, tell you about the plot as well as why i really like it so much.
Before we start talking about the plot or the reasons that i like this series so much, we need first to learn a couple of more generic things about the show, a short description if you wish. This port is also part of a contest so check it out.
To begin with, as i mentioned above this is a series that came out in 2019. Season 1 has 10 55 minutes episodes and season 2 just aired with only one episode out. Season 2 will also have 10 episodes. Also, note that this series is a crime drama and is based on true events.
Finally, before we begin with the plot, the creators of the show are Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein who you might know from Narcos. Also, the main stars of the show are Forest Whitaker, Nigel Thatch, Vincent D'Onofrio (Kingpin from Daredevil) along with other excellent actors that have any part in mafia movies/shows and such.
Plot
The story starts with Bumpy Johnson an American gangster who gets out of Alcatraz after an 11-year-old sentence. He comes back to Harlem where he once ruled but many things changed. Even though he still holds a lot of power he doesn't have full control of Harlem and the reason are the Italians who took advantage of his absence.
Bumpy doesn't like that so he wants to take it back from Vincent Chin Gigante as he considers Harlem "rightfully his". Bumpy and Chin quickly heat up and are ready to wage a war while Costello (Paul Sorvino) tries to moderate things before it turns messy.
Why I Really like this Show
From the plot, you just read you might think, well that's another crime/gangster show but that would be a huge mistake if you ask me. Of course, it's a show around Bumpy a real-life character and gangster but it gets complicated quickly.
What i mean by that is that we get to see other characters as well and follow their stories, ambitions, dreams, sorrow. For example, we get to see what the rival of Bumpy, Chin is thinking, how his life is and what problems does he face, problems that aren't revolved entirely around his mob doings, but his family as well.
At the same time, we come across two other iconic characters, Malcolm X and Congressman Adam Clayton Powell who all knew each other along with Bumpy as well. This is where the show gets really interesting for me.
It's one thing to have the mobs fighting, to see what ways they were thinking of taking down their enemies and such but it's a whole other thing when you merge politics in the game. That's what that show is exactly. You got the fightings but at the same time, all the big names know each other.
The worst part is not that they just know each other cause this is natural if they grew up in the same place but it's really "sad" that they worked together numerous times for their own sake of course. So we got people that are gangsters, politicians, or have movements that are pro-people all working together at certain points even though about each other's past.
It's really contradicting and it's also something that should be a lesson to us all. We may keep hearing or saying "wow" that politician or philanthropist or entrepreneur is such an awesome person because he saves or talking about saving/helping people. While in reality he has ties or worked with people that are basically killing people and destroying families.
If you really watch this show and think about those people that many idolized and keep on idolizing you will come to realize once more a lot of things about humanity and how our mind works. If not it will simply be another crime show that you will love to watch for the gun fighting and stuff.
The only thing i didn't like about the show is that in some fight scenes the blood looks totally fake and i think we are living in an era that we can easily create fake blood for movies/shows or just making it look more realistic.
›Godfather of Harlem - "Pessimism leads to weakness. Optimism to power"@dedicatedguy2167d
Movies and series about mafias and gangsters are something I always enjoy very much. Recent productions that were of top-notch quality are The Irishman movies and the British series Peaky Blinders.
It is fair to say I enjoy the genre. I decided to watch this series because the plot was interesting, it is somewhat based in real-life events and the cast was acceptable with some familiar faces. The story is about Bumpy Johnson played by Forest Whitaker.
He is a major crime lord that has returned to his city after spending several years in jail. He has some business with the Italian mafia but there are also a few issues between him and certain Italian thugs. Relationships between crime lords always seem respectful but the truth is they are trying to stab each other in the back. Plus, there are also a lot of racial and religious issues that serve as fuel to spark big troubles.
The story is not just about crime by the way although it is the main focus as well as corruption. There are also 2 important religious characters, Malcolm X with his very incendiary rhetoric in favor of Islam, and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. who was a Baptist pastor as well as a politician and from what we can see in the series, and a little bit corrupt as well.
There is a lot of violence in the series and a decent amount of blood, betrayals, lies, manipulations, and all sorts of crazy stuff that are typical of this type of story. The main character wasn't as charismatic as I was hoping but he still did a good job.
If you enjoy movies about mafias, gangsters, crime, and all the related drama, then you should watch this show. It is far from perfect, and it is also not as good as the best productions from the genre, but I think it is entertaining enough to deserve a watch.
The best
Entertaining crime series with good acting.
Forest Whitaker was excellent in his role.
The worst
In the final episode there is a fight and I easily predicted the "surprises" within the fight. It doesn't have good twists or anything similar.
›Godfather of Harlem Brand New Series Review (Ep.1)@filotasriza32462d
It's been so long since i did a series review and we are talking about me guys... A year ago i could watch 3-4 seasons in less than week and now....now i just found the time to watch a single episode. Thankfully the series is brand new and only one episode is out, so lucky me!
General Info That Mostly Nobody Cares
Godfather of Harlem is a crime drama series that aired during 29/9/2019 and created by Chris Brancato & Paul Eckstein (writers of the masterpiece called Narcos). It will have 10 episodes in total and by the time i am writing this post only the first episode is out for the masses to watch it. If you work for the press and be a critic or something then you get the chance to see 5 out of 10 episodes in order to write a more objective review. Sadly, i belong to the first group (the masses), although i am a league of my own, so my review will be based on the first episode alone!
Plot
Godfather of Harlem takes place (guess where?) in Poland.....Harlem and is based on the real life story of Ellsworth Bumpy Johnson a crime boss who in 1960 returns to his town from a 10 year imprisonment in Alcatraz. Bumpy Johnson is played by the one and only Forest Whitaker!
So Bumpy returns to his town but not everything is the way he left it 10 years ago. The Italian mafia now rules the city and have taken many of the streets that once was Bumpy's. Fearless as he is, he invade the "hideout" of the "leader" of the mafia in Harlem who is called Vincent “The Chin” Gigante who 10 years ago was a nobody according to Bumpy. Vincent is played by (Vincent D’Onofrio) the same man who portrayed Wilson Fisk in daredevil so i expect a lot.
https://youtu.be/TY2iauDjadI
To also give you a better look on the whole Italian mafia and it's structure think of it like this. Vincent is the face of the mafia and to be more exact, the face of Genovese family. In a way he does what he wants in his territory but for bigger issues he needs the approval of the family or the families! (at least that's how i understood it)
Soon enough a rivalry will begin as Bumpy will try and reclaim his lost ground and due to his criminal experience he would be always one step ahead. In order to achieve his goals he will get in touch with Malcolm X (Nigél Thatch) and Congressman Adam Clayton Powell (Giancarlo Esposito)
My Conclusion on Episode 1
I quite enjoyed the first episode a lot! In most of the series i have watched the first episode has a slow pace as the purpose is to try and explain to us...viewers what we are going to see, in what era and place everything is happening etc etc. In this one though, the pace was extremely fast and it was awesome! I don't know if this will keep up but i felt like i was watching 2-3 episodes.
Also, except the fact that the acting is great, i like the correlation between the Crime boss Bumpy and the Political-Activists-Religious leaders/influencers or whatever else you wanna call them. Remember just a couple of sentences above that i mentioned Malcolm X and the congressman. Apparently, they all had some ties with Bumpy and knew each other for a long time while at the same time focusing and using each other's resources for their own agenda. I don't know ofc if that's the truth but just a tiny fraction of it must be there!
Let me know if you watched the first episode and if the answer is no GO AND WATCH IT
