  1. (ESP-ENG) Grave of the Fireflies | The brutality of war - Movie Review!@javyeslava.photo244d

    **

Hello friends, good vibes to all.

    **

Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.

    Source!

War is one of those things no one should have to experience because the cost people end up paying is usually greater than the price of the cause they are fighting. Grave of the Fireflies is a clear example of this. It shows how war can destroy the very core of a society and its people in exchange for something that, because of the war's aftermath, many will likely never be able to enjoy. This story is sad, harsh, raw, and, unfortunately, very realistic. It's the struggle of two siblings to survive in a very hostile environment where everyone is only concerned with themselves.

We are in Kobe in 1945, in the midst of World War II. Bombings are commonplace in Japan, leaving people with no choice but to flee to shelters. Seita and Setsuko are two siblings who witness their mother's death in one of these bombings, leaving them completely alone (their father is in the army). With no one else to turn to, they decide to go to an aunt's house, but things don't go as planned. This woman is anything but kind to orphans. They eventually decide to leave and fend for themselves, unaware that this is just the beginning of the end.

From here on, we witness the stark reality of war's effects. Seita and Setsuko are forced to wander through the ruined village, searching for food or help, until they decide to settle in an old air-raid shelter deep in the forest. Penniless, foodless, and without any resources, these siblings must fight against bombs, the fear of another bombing raid, the indifference of others, and above all, hunger, which will ultimately seal their fate. It's often said that in difficult circumstances, the phrase "there are more good people than bad" comes to mind, but Seita and his little sister never witnessed such a thing, not even from their own family.

It's a story that tugs at anyone's heartstrings because Seita fought so hard to survive, doing everything he could to keep his sister safe, happy, and comfortable. But the world can be a very dark and difficult place, and sometimes no matter how much he tries, it's not enough. The nearly hour-and-a-half-long film shows us the entire journey the two siblings went through, how their resilience often proved stronger than they were. It also shows us how two children cope with the grief or loss of a mother. And yes, imagine being alone in life with nothing and no one, having recently lost your mom. It's a film that's very easy to empathize with.

Once again, Miyazaki creates a deeply moving story, but this time incredibly realistic; there's little fantasy or magic here. It's probably one of Studio Ghibli's saddest films, and that's what makes it a true gem. The animation, as always, is spectacular for a 1988 film. The Ghibli team was ahead of its time; the level of detail seen in some scenes is unmatched by films today. The characters are very endearing. Setsuko is a sweetheart, so tender and brave. Seeing her in the film's final act is heartbreaking. And Seita's strength is truly remarkable; everyone should have an older brother like him.

Incredible film, a Studio Ghibli classic. Despite its sadness, I think everyone should see it; it's absolutely worth it. The atmosphere, the music, everything is top-notch. 200% recommended. I've included the trailer below.

Recomendada 200%. Les dejo el trailer por acá abajo.

  2. RECOMMENDATION: Grave of the Fireflies / RECOMENDACIÓN: La tumba de las luciérnagas. [Esp/Eng]@twirilyn287d

    ENGLISH VERSION:

Hello to the entire community! I hope you're all well and have a nice day. Before presenting this brief review or recommendation, I'd like to let you know that I appreciate any feedback to improve the quality of each post and be able to present you with better content every day.

Now, let's start with the most important part... While it's true that September 21st has already passed, it doesn't mean it's a bad thing to remember this film and the events that occurred, as it affected so many people.

This anime (film) was produced by Studio Ghibli and directed by Isao Takahata. It is a drama, war film, and historical film.

    PORTADA.jpg PORTADA

    > Grave of the Fireflies / 火垂るの墓 / Hotaru no Haka

    SYNOPSIS / SUMMARY:

In Japan, in 1945, during an American air raid on the city of Kobe, young Seita and his little sister Setsuko, children of a Japanese naval officer, fail to reach the shelter where their mother is waiting for them. After the bombing, the two brothers search for their mother, and Seita finds her badly injured in the school that has been converted into a hospital. Shortly after, their mother dies, and after a brief stay at their aunt's house, the two wander aimlessly and homelessly.

SEITA AND SETSUKO, INNOCENCE TRYING TO SURVIVE:

This film is set in the final moments of World War II, and places us in a completely devastated Japan, devastated by bombing. This is where the entire plot and story of these two siblings begins. After losing everything (including their mother), Seita and Setsuko try to survive on their own in such a harsh reality, where not only is the city destroyed, but also the people, along with their empathy and hope.

    e.jpg IMAGEN

The film focuses on Seita, who, as the older brother and almost a teenager, manages to shoulder a responsibility beyond surviving the war: caring for and protecting his younger sister, Setsuko. For many, this reality is difficult, as the protagonist is still a child who may not fully understand the magnitude of war.

    d.jpg IMAGEN

On the other hand, Setsuko, a very naive girl in her purest and most innocent state, who was only looking to have fun, goes through a very strong and heartbreaking end... As the film progresses, she begins to suffer from malnutrition and ends up dying of hunger.

    b.jpg IMAGEN

Later, after the death of his sister... Seita also dies of malnutrition at a train station on September 21st.

    c.jpg IMAGEN

This film shows us how, amidst all the turmoil, the children always cling to hope, to small moments of fun (something significant about them are the fireflies in the cave, the candy in the tin... and later when they both die and are reunited). Something very striking is that, despite both of them fighting with all their might, their end was practically written from the beginning.

    PERSONAL CONTRIBUTION:

    • While I'm used to writing this section in my posts as "what I liked and disliked," I think this film captured me psychologically, or left me with a feeling I can't fully explain. It's the raw story and misfortune of two siblings who had to live a reality they didn't deserve at such a young age. Personally, I find it a somewhat powerful situation just thinking about it, since it wasn't just Seita and Setsuko, as portrayed in the film; thousands of other families were affected due to disputes, bombings, and wars. Unfortunately, we won't get to know all the stories of each of those affected.

    • I highly recommend this film because, despite not being very long, it's one of the few anime that is unforgettable. The plot captivates you so much that the emotions it conveys allow you to feel like you're inside the film. The film is so well executed from beginning to end that, while it's true, at the beginning of the film you're already told about Seita's harsh ending... but as the plot unfolds, you have a faint hope that this sad ending can change.

    • Regarding the animation, Studio Ghibli always maintains its essence, and this film is no exception. It maintains moving moments, highly detailed landscapes, and a visual quality that is striking and perfectly complements the narrative and the unfolding of the entire plot.

    f.jpg IMAGEN

    Diseño sin título (2).png

Finally, I highly recommend watching this film, as it manages to be much more than a simple animation; it's a visual and emotional testament to what it means to lose everything and still try to hold on to life with all your might. This work makes you appreciate what you have, reflect on every detail... so if you're looking for a film that impacts you, moves you, and is worth watching, I invite you to enjoy this experience.

Greetings anime lovers from #TheAnimeRealm. A while back I was recommended to watch the movie Grave of the Fireflies and after a while I gave it a chance without knowing what it was about. I don't regret having seen it, but for me it's one of those movies that deserves to be seen at least once.

    SepDesarrollo2025.gif

    Captura de pantalla 2025-08-29 183857.png

When I decided to give the film a chance, it was because it was one of Isao Takahata's most emblematic works and because it belonged to the famous Ghibli studios, of which I consider myself a big fan for their many films that are always full of life lessons and morals.

But Grave of the Fireflies is unlike any other I've seen in this studio. It shows the harsh reality of what it means to have a country at war and the people left behind trying to survive.

Captura de pantalla 2025-08-29 184112.png Captura de pantalla 2025-08-29 184121.png

And the worst part isn't just the war itself, but the fact that they tell the story of survival from the perspective of two defenseless children orphaned by the war, and therefore show you the powerful experiences these children had to endure in their quest for a better quality of life.

The story itself is incredible. Takahata knew how to touch the core and the heart of anyone who watches this film, at least that was the case for me. He takes you by the hand with these two children, enjoying good times and some not so good ones, but always preserving their childlike innocence, which makes it truly endearing.

Captura de pantalla 2025-08-29 184135.png Captura de pantalla 2025-08-29 184211.png

Wartime has always been cruel worldwide, but seeing the victims of war, and the fact that they are such young souls with so much to live and experience, makes it even more powerful.

It reminded me a lot of the story of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, a film I only saw once because of how crude it was, as well as many other films of this genre. Honestly, you have to have as much heart as stomach to watch these things.

Captura de pantalla 2025-08-29 184227.png Captura de pantalla 2025-08-29 184242.png

And although the film starts with spoilers and tells you a little about what will happen in the end, you see certain things in the beginning that don't make sense, but when you learn more about these children's story and realize what really happened, it's quite sad.

This movie left me feeling sick for a few days. It was hard to get both characters out of my thoughts, wondering how they could have done things better, how things would have gone better for them if they'd made different decisions. But the sad truth is that even though it's an animated film, it can easily be mistaken for a story based on real events.

Captura de pantalla 2025-08-29 184255.png Captura de pantalla 2025-08-29 184305.png

Maybe I'm just too sensitive about these issues and cry at almost everything. But the truth is, this film deserves all the accolades it received, as Takahata made an effort to convey his message to the audience with his plot. From my side, I give it:

  4. Grave of the Fireflies: A Cinematic Experience of Heartache - Review@rayhanhiveman394d

    Grave of the fireflies

    credit

Today, I will be talking about an anime that I have watched multiple times, and each time I have felt something new. It’s an unforgettable anime, and I think many can relate to it. I’m talking about none other than Grave of the Fireflies. When I watched this anime movie for the first time, I cried for the first time. I do not cry a lot, as I am not that emotional of a person, but this movie made me cry from the core of my heart. This is truly a sad anime and a harsh reality of today’s world. I feel many of you have seen this anime movie because it’s an amazing film that is hardly not seen by anime lovers. I believe if you have not watched this anime movie yet, then you should read my review about it. After that, you will absolutely feel like watching it at least once.

Creator: Akiyuki Nosaka Release date: April 16, 1988 Running time: 1h 29m

    Plot

    credit

The story is set in the timeline of World War II. There are two siblings who lost their parents due to the bombing, and they decided to take shelter in their relative's house. One of the siblings is Seita, the older brother, and the other is Setsuko, the younger sister. Both of them were struggling to survive in this war. The relative they stayed with was not happy with the siblings being around, so the elder brother decided to move out with his sister. In the beginning, they took shelter in a cave, and they stayed there for a few days, which went really well until they craved food. The younger sister was too young to keep her hunger in control; eventually, she fell ill. The elder brother tried his best to get food; he also tried to steal from others, but nothing worked. His sister's condition was getting worse day by day, and it was really hard for the brother to see his sister in this condition. The story depicts the scenario of how ordinary people suffer during war.

I liked every part of the story, as it was super realistic. We can still see war happening around the world, and we can do nothing about it but only pray for their well-being. The people who go through war are the only ones who know how it feels, and the writer wanted us to face it too, so he made an incredible anime movie showing us the reality that we avoid seeing. Through the movie, we could feel the sorrow. The anime movie is about how the big brother struggles to save his younger sister during the war, as well as the feelings they go through, which we can also feel.

I could not imagine what people go through in war until I watched this anime. I feel sympathy for the people who are still suffering and wish for the war to end very soon. What makes this movie incredible is its raw emotional honesty. It does not glorify war; it just shows the consequences of conflict on innocence and on family. The animation is beautiful and is almost paradoxical in its softness. The story is heart-wrenching, so watch it at your own risk.

    Thanks for Reading

  5. Grave of the Fireflies 💔@arashi0416417d

Warm greetings to all Anime Lovers and, of course, to everyone in Hive.

My daughter @tegoshei had a plan to rewatch Whispers of the Heart, but ended up watching this beautiful but heartbreaking film "Grave of the Fireflies" because she said she hasn't watched it yet. She’s aware of the beautiful yet tragic story, so she kept on postponing watching it. In the end, we agreed to watch it instead of rewatching Whispers of the Heart.

    Source

The film tells the story of two orphan siblings, Seita and Setsuko and their desperate struggle to survive in the midst of the Second World War. Their struggle began when their mother died because of the fire-bombing. The war had created a harsh environment and a lack of food and resources.

Seita and Setsuko were temporarily staying with their aunt. Their aunt was initially helpful to them, but later on, she became so selfish and resentful of them as the rations shrank. She even used or traded their mother's clothes and other belongings, but she kept most of the food for her and her own family.

She also verbally abused Seita and Setsuko, and Seita was deeply affected by his aunt's behavior, and he also felt a strong responsibility to provide for his younger sister, so he had to find a better way to take care of Setsuko.

    Source

Seita and Setsuko then decided to stay in the caves where people used to take cover and make a home for themselves. Nobody goes there anymore anyway. They chose to stay away from his aunt and be independent, even in such turbulent times.

Though the fire-bombing still keeps going on from time to time, he tried his very best to protect his sister. It is really like you are experiencing a war through the eyes of innocent children, and you watch as blind hope slowly fades away.

Every moment with Seita and Setsuko is filled with love and desperation, making their inevitable fate even more heart-wrenching. Setsuko, the younger sibling, is no doubt the soul of the film, carrying lightness in her being until the very end. Seita's love for his sister fuels him to keep going to survive and make it against all odds.

    Source

What makes this film unforgettable is the siblings' raw emotional honesty, Setsuko's laughter, her small joys, even over the fruit drops for hunger survival sometimes, and playing with the fireflies, which delighted her innocent soul.

The scene that touched my heart so deeply was when Seita personally cremated his younger sister's body with her favorite doll. And putting her ashes in the empty can of her favorite candy. Also, as shown at the beginning of the movie, when someone threw away the candy can containing Setsuko’s ashes, freeing her and allowing her to travel with her brother once again.

For me, this is really a beautiful but heartbreaking and honest movie. Highly recommendable to watch but really hard to re-watch. But honestly, it's really a beautiful film and it is a real masterpiece.

The directing was great, the characters, the atmosphere that sets up the movie and the detailing of the premise were outstanding.

I'll just end my post here, and I hope you'll have the courage to watch it too. Thank you for reading my post, and God bless. ❤🙏

  6. Grave of the Fireflies: The True Cost of War@zoe01424d

    Grave of the Fireflies

    credits

    Spoilers Ahead!

Hello everyone, today I'll be reviewing another amazing anime movie, and that is Grave of the Fireflies. I've heard from my friends that it is really a great movie, so I could not wait any longer to watch it. I watched this movie with my dad as we were planning to watch something together, and we decided to watch this anime movie.

I didn't want to watch the trailer as I already knew the story. I mean, not the whole story, but I heard from my friends that it is very depressing and can only be seen once because I would be too depressed to repeat it. As I have a habit of forgetting what I've watched, I thought I might rewatch it someday, but my friends warned me about this anime movie. However, I want to show you guys the trailer to help you understand how amazing the animation is. I know it's very old, but it also gives off a nostalgic vibe—a story about a brother and sister and how lovely I thought it would be. Well, will find out after watching the movie.

    credits

The story begins with two Japanese young siblings, Seita and Setsuko. They are living during the timeline of World War II, and an American firebombing separates these siblings from their parents. Now they only have each other, and they have to rely on one another as they struggle for survival. At first, the big brother was taking shelter in the house of a distant aunt in Nishinomiya, but he and his younger sister didn't feel welcomed there. Later, Seita and Setsuko had to leave to survive on their own and eventually moved to an abandoned bomb shelter. In the beginning, everything was good; both siblings were happy, but as time passed, they ran out of food and struggled to survive. The big brother, Seita, tried his best to find food for his younger sister, as she was too young to survive without it. Later on, she became ill because of hunger.

    credits

Everything in this movie, each and every scene, made me tearful; somehow, I could not control my eyes at all. I felt like something was choking me as I could feel the pain in my neck. I cried so many times, and as I was watching this movie with my dad, he never cried before—he doesn't cry at all—but while watching this movie, I could see tears falling from his eyes. To be honest, this is the best movie I've ever watched. It is truly so depressing, as it's a story about reality—what really happens during wars and how people suffer from it. This is the harsh reality, and we don't get the chance to see these types of anime movies often. I can't remember the last time I watched something this emotional. I've explained half of the story, and I'm leaving the rest for you guys to watch. This movie will make any adult cry, and I can bet on that because it is truly emotional.

    credits

This is saddening that this type of war is still going on around the world, but we are unable to do anything about it. This movie depicts the harsh reality of war. People go through more than what we see because those who are facing it can only know the real pain; we can't feel the exact same unless we are in the same situation. But this movie is so beautiful; it has described everything that happens during war. I loved the bond between the brother and sister, how good they looked together, and how happy they were together. If it weren't for the war, there could have been a happy ending.

I would highly recommend to watch this movie once in a life time.

    Thanks for reading 🌷

This is my first time writing for this community, in fact I am not very assiduous to watch movies or anime series, beyond Heidi, Marco or Candy, (which I saw during my adolescence) but I could not stop reviewing a movie I saw yesterday with my daughters, a movie with a heartbreaking and beautiful story at the same time, I am referring of course to Grave of the Fireflies, 😥 it is inevitable not to comment after watching this masterpiece, I think you would have to be extremely insensitive or lacking in emotions not to appreciate the great value it has, so without further ado I would like to share with you my impressions.

    Historia/Story

Seita and Setsuko are a pair of children who were orphaned in the last year of the second world war, Seito, as the older brother, must assume the monumental responsibility of caring for and assisting his younger sister (Setsuko) as any parent would, at first it is not so difficult, but the challenges increase as the shortage of food and basic supplies increases, in fact they are forced to leave their paternal aunt's house after her insidious comments, and move into a cave that served as a bomb shelter. As the end of the war approaches the situation becomes increasingly precarious as Japan tries to resist and not resign, but in the streets, cities and towns people suffer the consequences of the decisions made by politicians and the army, it is evident that in a war the only ones who lose are the most innocent and vulnerable. In the midst of all this, Seita does everything possible and impossible to keep hope alive, which she loses completely after the capitulation of Japan and the loss of another loved one.

The story is heartbreaking for anyone who boasts at least a minimum of empathy for others, but I think it is even more painful for those of us who have children, or for older siblings, imagine how painful it must be for someone to not be able to cover their most basic needs with total normality, and unfortunately that is something that often happens during wars, those of us who have never experienced the pain of a war (thank God) can perhaps imagine but can never even come close to approximating how terrible it must be to not have access to even a grain of rice. Those of us who experienced the rawest years of food shortages in Venezuela during 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, as terrible as it was, we only have a slight idea, war is by far, much worse than that because you also have to take care of yourself from attacks, likewise, for two children all alone the challenge is even more titanic.

There were two characters I hated with all my heart, the children's aunt, and the man who beat Seita when he stole part of his harvest, because I can understand that those were hard times, but it doesn't take a great scholar to understand that two children alone are very vulnerable in such a hostile environment, and that therefore the least you can do for them is to give them a hand as much as possible. The aunt was an arrogant and selfish woman who constantly confronted Seita for not working as her husband and daughter did, but did not realize that he was taking care of her sister, on the other hand she never complained while he was putting food on the table, even at the cost of sacrificing the few belongings she had left from her deceased mother. This hurts me because I can't imagine doing this to any of my nieces and nephews, to me they are like my children and it would hurt me to see them suffer. As for the man of the harvest, how could he not care about the child's illness? How could he be so indolent in the face of a child's pleas?

I was surprised by the animation of this film because like any historical drama film, this one knew how to represent very well the devastation of a war, I noticed that the colors are even opaque, dim and that is because in this way perhaps, they transmit us the pain and sadness of a country that suffers, fire, darkness and shadows predominate, but on the other hand there are scenes that even in the midst of darkness transmit us very positive feelings and that are also very important in the story. For example my favorite scene is where Seita catches the fireflies to “decorate” the inside of the cave, with this gesture he wants to make his sister happy, and he succeeds, also this allows him to relive memories of a much happier and prosperous time for him and his family, but when Setsuko asks him the next day why the fireflies die so soon, and also confesses that his aunt told him the truth about the death of his mother, he bursts into tears. I consider that fireflies are an allegory to the happy moments of life, maybe they are fragile and many times we let ourselves be overwhelmed by the moments of sadness, but as Seita did, we should treasure those moments to keep them in our heart as he kept the fireflies in the bucket, and enjoy them in the difficult moments to cope with the situation.

Of course Setsuko's death is the highlight of the film, the most heartbreaking scene of all, it is when we connect the most with Seita, she, even dying of hunger thinks of her little brother and offers him “rice balls” that are really made of mud, she shows us human frailty, the feeling of helplessness and devastation. He knows that his father, as well as his mother is dead, so when he loses Setsuko he feels that there is nothing left to fight for, he lost his family and even his pride for his country that ended up defeated and occupied by the enemy, so the only thing left for him was to say goodbye to Setsuko with dignity and surrender to death.

    Fuente

But in spite of everything I loved the ending, I consider that it did have a happy ending because at the end of the day both siblings were together, when Seita left this world his little sister received him. The scene of the fireflies is comforting and brings you back to calm knowing that these two children will not be separated anymore.

    Fuente

As hard as the plot is, I recommend watching it because it is not only a war story, with drama and selfish characters who could have done something for someone else but didn't, like the children's aunt, the doctor, the farmer and even the guy who finds Seita's corpse and throws away with contempt the candy can containing Setsuko's bones (noticing that there was nothing of “value” inside), it is not only about the lack of empathy of some people, it is also about sibling love, camaraderie, sacrifice, dedication, togetherness and the enormous value of the simplest things in life, like the fireflies in the dark that can give hope, or the candy in the can that made the little girl so happy. Life is full of sad moments but also of happy moments that we should treasure like fireflies to light our way. Thank you very much for reading my review, friends, I send you blessings and a big virtual hug from the bottom of my heart.

  8. (ENG/SPA) GRAVE of the FIREFLIES: The Poetry of War Classic Review@promete0sz578d

    luciernaga.jpg

I think there are two things that do not allow us to be happy, one is the environment, that absolute layer difficult to predict and control because in essence that is nature, the second is ourselves in constant conflict by creating problems with our decisions that take us away from those who can perhaps help us and many other things, in our human nature we want to be happy but we also love the conflict of war.

Grave of the Fireflies is an anime film available on Netflix, it can be summarized as a sad film.... maybe yes but I think not, it is a film that offers more than thoughts of sadness and compassion, I consider it is a film of varied reflections in both approaches where one of those thoughts is what most reaches people because it is a very visual film in its emotions but there is much more in the way the characters act.

    image.png

As you can see in the trailer, Grave of the Fireflies takes place in an environment of war and the consequences that this can produce, we see the struggle for survival of its protagonists who create a powerful emotional thread with the viewer to be a very real film in the way it is expressed, it is undoubtedly the powerful message conveyed and why I recommend this film for the general audience to which I add the following aspects that I consider of great value in the film.

    • Our Decisions are a weapon of mass destruction

This is a very personal reflection that the film left me and that I want to convey in the review because maybe that feeling of the film also reaches you. The protagonists suffer the consequences of the war and that makes us have a lot of compassion for them where many scenarios are beyond their control but there are moments when they have all the elements in their hands to make the decision that could save them and it is stubbornness that does not make them give in.

I have lived the above, I think we have all gone through those moments in which life gives us the elements to make a decision in which we must give in because it is giving us a difficult lesson because after all it is a learning, in the film is with the war but this can be transferred on a smaller scale to family conflicts, battles with friends, personal differences caused at work, etc. that makes people self-destruct by not giving in to their wrong conviction.

    image.png

    untitled.gif

    • How difficult it is to escape from the Environment that surrounds us

As you saw in the trailer, the environment I am referring to is The War which is what brings out the most abominable darkness in people and as a consequence produces a lot of sad feelings with what the protagonists suffer in order to survive such an environment.

We all live constantly in an environment of war, of battles that we mistakenly believe is the worst but it is incredible how there are worse events such as war scenarios and let's hope we never know that kind of events.

In my country we are not in the best conditions and that environment has driven away friends who have had to go to other countries in search of a better future, these are some of the cruelest decisions I have seen, their lives are not in danger as in the film but I can establish a solid analogy having seen how that environment destroyed or at least radically changed the dreams and lives of my friends.

    image.png

    q79PJoDB2CAciPX13wZ8uPAhoF6.jpg

    • Critical detail to the film in the location of scenes

I think that the beginning of the film should have been at the end of the film, that is where it should be because the emotional impact would have been much greater, which is exactly what a film like this is looking for, to cause emotions associated with sadness to give birth to various reflections that viewers may have about what they saw.

That is why in my case I did not like the location of that scene, it was a wrong decision, I considered it unnecessary, it is a classic, a film of power therefore it should be criticized because in the same way it is melancholic poetry the structure with which this animation is elaborated, that is what makes it reach so many people and will continue to do so for many more decades.

A film to which I give 9 out of 10 and totally recommendable, in fact I saw the suggestion in the community and I am glad I could see this film, I am sure you will also like it and it will leave in your mind many reflections to appreciate life, have a nice day.

I dedicate each and every one of my posts and videos to my little dog named princess, we called her chiquito, she is no longer with us but from heaven she will see that her existence was valuable and the most beautiful thing that will exist in my heart and soul.

  9. Hotaru no Haka // In war it is the innocent who suffer the most@dinaaczib581d

Greetings The Anime Realm community, my name is Dina and for me it is a pleasure to make my first post here. I'm a person who mostly watches conventional movies and series, for some reason the Japanese animation genre is not among my biggest tastes, but I know it has a great potential and has a lot to offer to those of us who like to enjoy a good story in front of the screen, and well, maybe this is the beginning of a stage in which I will watch more Japanese content. Now, it's not that I have never watched anime, like most people my age, I watched Sailor Moon, Saint Seiya, Candy Candy, Dragon Ball, but I never went out of the conventional.

Recently came to me an animated film called Hotaru no Haka, or as it is mostly known “Grave of the Fireflies”, is an animated film by the famous studio Ghibli which I understand has made incredible works, the genre is war and is inspired by the events of the second world war. This film is from 1988 and was directed by Isao Takahata, although the authorship of the story is by Akiyuki Nosaka.

Fondo de Pantalla Anime Ilustrado Negro Neon (1).jpg

Before I give you my opinion and thoughts about the movie, I will give you a little context, I know that most of you have probably already seen it, but it is not superfluous to refresh your memory. Those were years in which Japan was suffering the consequences of participating in a war, as it is known, this country was a protagonist of the Second World War in which the main enemy was the USA. The city of Kōbe was one of the many that was frequently bombed and in that sense at a certain moment two children get separated from their mother while trying to flee from the bombing.

Thus begins a real ordeal for these children who, helpless, seek to survive at all costs in the midst of chaos, destruction and food shortages caused by the war. I should clarify that we are talking about two children, Seita and his four-year-old sister, Setsuko. I think it is not necessary to give you more details of what we see in the film, we know that war produces a lot of suffering and generates scenarios in which receiving a little help can be practically impossible, now, for two children this can be even worse. Seita and Setsuko live heartbreaking experiences, they are just homeless and hungry children trying to survive at all costs.

The first thing I am going to highlight about this film is how graphic the animation can be, although it is true that the film is from 1988, it has aged quite well, it has good colors, but beyond that, I want to highlight the raw scenarios that we see there, sometimes it seems that an animated film could not impact us with images that are close to reality, but the truth is that the film has the ability to convey that reality in a fairly integrated way to the point of becoming just as shocking as a live-action film.

So I was amazed with this film, but at the same time saddened by the terrible experiences of these two unfortunate children who are the living example of what countries and regions that are at war live daily, it is also a clear example that the most innocent are the ones who suffer the most and only for the simple fact that others made decisions that result in destruction and hunger.

I highly recommend this movie, I think it is for all audiences and a very interesting sample of what an anime can achieve when it is made with quality, now I understand why Studio Ghibli receives so much praise, no doubt they do a distinctive job. It was a pleasure to share with you, I hope to come back soon.

I am pleased to be able to write my first post for this community that I just found and that I see has very good content. First of all, I must confess something, and that is that I usually don't watch anime, much less at my age (68 years old), however, at the insistence of my daughters I saw a Ghibli Studios movie called "Tomb of the Fireflies" which I thought was worth seeing, recommending and reviewing since it has a tremendous historical depth worthy of being admired, watching this film tore my soul but at the same time left me with many reflections that will surely remain in my heart and mind for a lifetime.

The animation is certainly very good, the characters have fluid movements that give a lot of naturalness to the film, the choice of colors in the cinematography is also wonderful, with opaque, dark or happy nuances depending on the emotions they want to convey in each scene, the soundtrack is a delight, but what caught my attention the most is the story itself, seeing the terrible damage that war can inflict on society, we literally see what happens to a couple of children who previously enjoyed a good position economic since they were the children of an army officer, but war does not forgive anyone, neither sex, nor races, nor social position, it unloads all its evil on people. In these cases, one of the biggest enemies is hunger, which can cause some people to lose empathy and become selfish, as in the case of the children's aunt who practically kicked them out of her house, but Seita had to mature, becoming a man before his time to take care of his little sister, protecting her to the best of his ability from the pain of orphanhood, hunger and misery.

    image.png

    Fuente

Although we see that socially and physically the characters have devolved, we see them increasingly worse dressed, dirty and starving, we cannot deny that they have also evolved on an emotional and moral level, little Setsuko for her part seems to notice more and more what the true situation is and In one of the most heartbreaking scenes, he even tells his brother that he no longer feels hungry when he realizes that a man brutally beat him for stealing food, and Seita, the older brother, stoically assumes his responsibility, taking his sister to the hospital. doctor, trying to find the shelter and food they both need. He makes hasty decisions but he does so in an attempt to protect his little sister.

It is important to clarify a good point, this film is not for everyone due to the great emotional charge it transmits, it even contains heartbreaking and explicit scenes that can hurt the susceptibility of any person, in fact it was difficult for me to see it because I do not usually consume this type of war plots, but at the same time it is good to be aware that this film only portrays a part of the horrors of war, it is very well told from the beginning to the end, and at the same time it promotes values such as family unity and resilience, and of course? Yes, it is based in some way on real events, and I am not just referring to the fact of the war itself, but also to the fact that the author of the book on which the film is based, Akiyuki Nosaka, wrote it based on his own experience of losing his sister who is only two years old.

With my heart in my hand I recommend this wonderful film that although it makes you cry, it will surely reinforce values in you, especially empathy. Thank you all very much for giving my publication a chance by reading it, I send you blessings and a big hug, we will see you next time.

  11. Grave of the Fireflies (Hotaru no Haka): The Japanese perspective on the horrors of WWII...@chris-chris92650d

    untitled.gif

Almost all of the people reading this post will, in all probability, be from Western countries... So, with almost certainty, I can tell you that, almost all of us will have grown up with the perspective of the victors of World War II; the Allies, the United States of America... But beyond that curiosity, what is shocking is what Ghibli Studios did in 1988; not only did it create one of the most important feature films in the history of Japanese and world animation; but it also showed us what the horror of having survived two nuclear bomb drops, and having been part of the losing side of the war, could feel like?

Based on hundreds of thousands of anecdotes from the time, this is the story of two siblings. A boy and a little girl... But before giving details about the plot, I want to emphasise that the striking thing about this Japanese-style animated film (a masterpiece of anime) is the delicacy with which it deals with the most atrocious of horrors.... There are no exaggerated scenes or shots to make anyone vomit.... This is about what two young children of their time have to do to survive in a Japan devastated by destruction and famine.

    Sakuma-Drops.jpg

    Original Source

    untitled.gif

Their parents are killed in the conflict. The father, a Japanese naval commander stationed in Pacific seas to defend the defeated Japanese Empire against the United States, and his mother has died, along with hundreds of others, as a result of bombing and the underlying aftermath of the war itself. There is no empathy, no humanity, and even less compassion. These are orphaned children, who need help, especially from their families, and no one does anything to help them.... Their uncles see them as nuisances and treat them as worse than a pest. They don't share food with them and mistreat them... the children run away and accept loneliness as opposed to humiliation.

Life is pure survival. Between illness, hunger, theft to be able to eat, hiding in the street from those who might hurt and harm them, and overcoming the death that stalks them at every moment, the children manage to overcome, as best they can, by sheer sacrifice, the obstacles? Life is hard, weaker and weaker, especially the girl, who is smaller; hunger is never satiated? In the hands of the older brother, a small tin can with a nauseating content but which will be symbolic for the meaning of the film. We see, through the Japanese perspective, how a war is suffered...

    screenshot-13.png

    Original 3

As heroism abandons all logic and all that remains is survival at all costs, indolence and a marked sense of loneliness.... It is a country adrift, without hope, but where fraternity, love and the values that make us all human; we can witness them through the circumstances that the two brothers have to endure. It is impossible not to be moved and shocked, in similar proportions, by Grave of the Fireflies.... And the most inexplicable thing is that this film only arrived in Latin America in 2005, in Europe in 2005 and in the United States in 2000. More than 12 years after its original release in Japan.

Censorship and bias is a part of every society... There is a rhythm and a starting point that seems to be culturally and historically imposed ... Not to mention, that in war, and even more so in World War II, there is always a high price to pay. It is a heart-rending, profound animation, with settings of real places and striking colours. Montage sequences that remind us of the harshness of a period we were lucky not to have lived through? And the sound that will make you never forget what you have heard in this animation... Grave of the Fireflies is the masterful perspective of the ‘soulless’ Japanese enemy thrown overboard... It is what, surely you and I would do, if instead of those two unfortunate children; it would have been one of us. Please, what a work of pure Japanese art. Bravo!

It was released in 1988 and is considered one of the masterpieces of animated cinema and one of the most moving and heartbreaking films about war.

The film tells the story of Seita and Setsuko, two siblings living in Kobe, Japan, during the last months of World War II. Their father is a naval officer on the front lines and their mother is killed in a bombing raid. The children are left alone and have to survive in the midst of misery, hunger, disease and the indifference of adults.

The film is not a simple chronicle of the horrors of war, but a profound reflection on the value of life, brotherly love, lost innocence and responsibility. The film shows the contrast between cruelty and beauty, between light and darkness, between fireflies and bombs. Fireflies are a recurring symbol in the film, representing hope, memory and the spirit of children.

The film has a realistic and sober style, avoiding sentimentality and melodrama. The director uses a non-linear narrative, alternating the present and the past, creating a flashback effect that increases the emotional impact. The animation is of high quality, with careful detail in the settings, characters and movements. The music is subtle and emotional, composed by Michio Mamiya.

  13. A review of "Grave of the Fireflies" - one of the best animated movies of all time@aurzeq1612d

This is one of those movies that your heart cannot endure seeing twice. The story of Seita and his little sister Setsuko is one of those that you see once and could never forget for your entire life... I know that this is only an animated movie, but it is not so difficult for me to think that something similar has indeed happened. The story itself is semi-autobiographical, since the author, i.e. Akiyuki Nosaka, lost his little sister during the war due to malnutrition and has suffered since then from the survivor's guilt.

    front.jpg

    Source

    Plot

The story starts with our main character, Seita, a teenage lad who dies of starvation in the depths of Kobe's Sannomiya Station shortly after WWII ends. After his spirit leaves his body, he is reunited with the soul of his little sister, Setsuko (making us understand that she is also dead). After this, a flashback starts and the story of the two siblings is narrated by Seita.

Japan has already lost the war, but they continue to fight. Seita and Setsuko are orphans when their mother is slain during one of the allied bombing attacks on Kobe. (Their father, a Naval officer, is lost at sea and, as we learn later, is most likely dead.) They reside with a distant aunt for a while, but her initial kindness evolves to bitterness, and the siblings depart, feeling that they can establish a better life for themselves. They appear to have a chance at first. They discover a hillside cave and convert it into a makeshift shelter, leading to a brief time of joy. However, the lack of food starts to become a great problem for them. This leads to malnutrition and the conditions of Setsuko start to become really bad and there's really little that Seita can do for her.

    Why should you watch it?

This is not the classical animated movie (and it clearly doesn't even try to be one), everything is realized by hand, and the overall quality is not memorable as one would expect, but this is my opinion part of his beauty. The animation is "good enough" and some of the scenes have the quality of a painting.

There is no exaggeration, the film tries to be as direct as possible even in the animation itself. In the scene below, a detail that probably someone hasn't noticed is that the fireflies that are actually surrounding the two siblings are in reality incendiary bombs from a B-25 bomber. This is something that can be noticed only by brightening the image.

This is a movie that makes you reflect on war, and that shows us a perspective that is not always the first one that comes to our minds, that of the collateral damages that war always brings. The film doesn't try to condemn or praise war, it simply tries to show that there will be always innocent people that will be involved on both sides. One can try to justify war as something necessary, performed for a "greater good" and in the interest of everyone, but I am not so sure that this is the reality. War is something that is decided unilaterally by a ruling minority and that the common people only should accept. Probably war is not always inevitable, I don't want to be too naive, but what I know is that every war was started because one side or the other was trying to make their proper interests (and not always noble ones).

By watching the Grave of the Fireflies, you will become so attached to the two protagonists that the ending, even though it was foreshadowed at the beginning of the film (probably to reduce the impact of the scene itself), will break your heart. When children are involved I am always emotional since they usually don't have any fault, they are defenseless and most of the time they aren't even aware of what is happening.

    grave_of_the_fireflies_post.jpg

    Source

Seita and Setsuko are two innocent victims of the war. Some might say that they were unlucky to be born during the war, but in my opinion, instead of bad luck, we should talk about injustice, because regardless of the war, children should always be protected and helped, also because if they do not survive, what was the point of the war itself (if wars ever had a meaning)?

    Conclusion

This is one of those movies that everyone should watch at least once in his life because it will leave an indelible mark in your memory that you will never be able to forget. There are a lot of other aspects that I didn't touch in this post, like the amazing soundtrack or the really unbearable secondary characters (you will want to punch them really hard)... but probably is better if you "feel" all these details on your skin.

So, concluding, this is one of the greatest (probably the greatest) animated movies of all time.

Grave of the Fireflies was released in 1988, based on the play by Akiyuki Nosaka and was produced by Studio Ghibli. The film shows us how devastated the Japanese country is during the Second World War, it is first shown as Seita a destitute child who dies in a train station, when his spirit meets that of his little sister Setsuko both begin to remember how difficult the last moments of their lives were and how the war made them spend such hard times in which they lost more and more things until the tragic end.

There are only 2 important characters that are Seita the older brother of 14 years and Setsuko his sister of 5 years, both must face a cruel and very hard world that will not forgive them only for being children, although they do everything to survive both end up dying demonstrating the relentlessness of all the suffering and misfortunes that the war produced.

The soundtrack and animation are wonderful, as I always say in the films of this studio, all the details are taken care of in the best possible way and even on more than one occasion you can forget the age of the film since it is in general it looks very beautiful.

    separador.png

The construction of the world is achieved very satisfactorily since that scenario of being in the middle of the war is very palpable, since not only the misfortunes of the protagonists are shown but how everyone suffers from this situation, it even manages to maintain that air of intrigue about when the next bombing will be and how it will affect both the protagonists and the people who live in the town.

    Courtesy of Into Film

The plot is basically the protagonists trying to survive in a world in which everyone looks for themselves, no one sees for others, a world in which only one's own good matters. Honestly the whole plot of the film feels quite dense and raw but this is a total success since it deals with strong themes that are very well achieved, at no time does it feel that the protagonists are pampered or that they suffer for no reason, all the events feel very natural in the context in which they are. I find it very interesting how they started the film saying head-on that both children have already died and that the story they are going to tell you is how they died, being that some scenes are quite sad and you even wish that despite everything they are saved.

    separador.png

The characters would be the weakest point of the film, apart from the fact that they are children and that it is impossible not to feel empathy for them when analyzed a little they do not have any characterization or personality, Setsuko is a girl and behaves like a girl, you can not ask for more so all the weight of a more complete character falls on Seita who simply does not measure up. While he is very active in trying to remedy the situation they find themselves in without caring about their integrity, he does not present any other characteristics apart from wanting good for his sister, so he feels like an empty character without ambitions or personal desires.

For all this it deserves a rating of 4 stars out of 7, it is not an excellent film but nevertheless it comes loaded with very unforgettable moments.

  15. The Grave of the Fireflies | [(ENG)-(ESP)]@jjdrax1744d

The grave of the fireflies is those kind of movies that are hard to forget because they mark us for life. Thanks to this type of animation, I can say that with total conviction that an animated film is not always aimed at a child audience and can sometimes be as emotional and mature as a flesh and blood one.

It can be considered that if you do not have any kind of emotion when watching this movie you lack any hint of empathy because this is one of the most moving films in history, not only animation but in general terms.

For those who have not seen this work of art, the story is about a boy and his sister who experience calamities in the middle of the Second World War. The situation at the end of the year 1945 was not easy for this country that had a certain defeat, but in this case the animation does not go for political paths but for the suffering of the common citizen, in this case this pair of boys who lose their mother and then they live with a ruthless aunt who doesn't feel any kind of pity for either of them.

Seeing the situation at his aunt's house, the boy decides to go from there with his sister to a forest, isolated from the city, while he is doing his best to get food but things are becoming increasingly difficult for them and everything ends. in a completely heartbreaking way.

Ghibli Studios have always shown us masterpieces, like Howl's Moving Castle or Spirited Away but this is undoubtedly the most moving and mature of them all. Without having to resort to any fantastic element, The Tomb of the Fireflies earns a high position among films that show us a raw and painful reality.

Many of the most moving films in history are told before a warlike environment, others show us more action in combat, however this animation focuses on a boy and a little girl who are struggling to survive, who go hungry and suffer misfortune due to the war, that's why I think this movie has a strong anti-war feeling even though the director has never made any statements about it.

The Second World War brought dire consequences regardless of whether we speak of the forces of the axis or the allies. We are talking about the common citizen, one who is directly affected by war, scarcity, agony and the sadness of losing loved ones and seeing their fellow men die. It is that aspect that is shown to us here, the difficulty of this pair of protagonists for only surviving, for eating and for basic needs that most of us enjoy and do not know how to appreciate.

I can't really imagine what it must be like to live under the circumstances of a large-scale war like the Second World War, but what I am sure of is the suffering of all those people who lived in the most affected countries and without question, Japan. He was one of them, beyond the bombs he received and also beyond the damage they caused to the Chinese people.

Both sides suffer in a contest for the decisions of authoritarian people with desires for power and megalomaniacs without any scruples. The feelings that we can find in this film rotate between anger, helplessness and a deep sadness that overwhelms us after having finished the film.

I challenge any of you if you have not seen this animation to ask anyone who has seen it what were the emotions that this animation transmitted to them and they will be able to realize that they are similar to the one proposed by me.

The movie is really heartbreaking and believe me don't pay attention to it is animation because it has the same level of movies as "Life is Beautiful", if I am talking about that level.

This film is in my top 3 anime favorites, it is a mature, moving and cruel film that conveys intense emotions and a strong anti-war statement thanks to the shock produced after seeing this shoot. Much more than recommended, I consider it a cultural necessity to see this movie.

  17. Daily Movie Recommendation - Grave of the Fireflies (1988)@vincentnijman3051d

There's few things as sad as children in war zones.

This 30 year old movie about the horrors of World War II, seen through the eyes of two Japanese kids - a 4 year young girl and her 14 year old brother - must be one of the most emotionally moving (animated) movies ever made.

Besides that, it is beautifully made, as far as that's possible with such a gruesome theme.

Even watching the trailer, makes me emotional, partially due to the fact that I've seen the movie a handful of times.

If you've never heard of this film and it's your first time watching this trailer, I'm sure that it will touch you. Seriously, if this doesn't move you at all, you should really work on feeling your feelings [says a guy who can't cry but who definitely feels].

I'm cutting it short here. This movie needs to be experienced.
