I honestly didn't know what to expect when I started His & Hers... The title made me think I was getting some kind of relationship drama, but it didn't take long to realise that this was actually a murder mystery with a lot of secrets, lies and people who clearly don't trust each other..
The series Stars Anna Andrews, played by Tessa Thompson, a former news anchor who has basically withdrawn from everyone after going through a painful loss.. She ends up returning to her hometown in Georgia when a young woman is murdered there... The interesting part is that the detective investigating the murder is her estranged husband, Jack Harper, played by Jon Bernthal... So right from the beginning, you already have a strange situation..
You have a journalist trying to investigate a murder while her husband is doing the actual police investigation and both of them seem to have their own reasons for not trusting each other...
What I liked about the series was the way it kept making me question what was actually happening... You get different sides of the story and slowly start realising that almost everybody has something they don't want other people to know..
Anna was probably the character I found most interesting because She isn't exactly the typical "good person trying to solve a murder" character... There are times when you understand why she's doing what she's doing and other times you're just sitting there wondering what exactly is wrong with her..
Jon Bernthal was also really good as Jack... His character is angry, emotional and sometimes makes some very questionable decisions but considering everything going on in his life and his relationship with Anna you can understand why he's not exactly thinking clearly..
The chemistry between Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal was
probably one of the strongest things about the show... Their relationship feels complicated, and you can tell there is a lot of history between them even when they aren't talking about it... They aren't just two people trying to solve a murder... They have their own problems, their own secrets and a lot of unresolved issues between them...
The small-town setting also worked well for me. Everybody seems to know everybody, and somehow every character has a connection to something that happened in the past... It gives the whole series that feeling that there is always something hiding underneath the surface but I also had some problems with the show...
For one, there were times when the story became unnecessarily complicated. I like twists in a thriller, but His & Hers sometimes felt like it was trying too hard to surprise me... Just when I thought I understood what was happening, another twist would come along and make me question everything again and while that sounds exciting, sometimes it just became confusing...
I also felt like some of the characters were making decisions simply because the story needed them to, instead of because those decisions actually made sense. There were moments where I was literally watching the screen thinking, "Why would you do that?"...
The last few episodes were probably the weakest part for me... The beginning had enough mystery to keep me interested, but by the time we got closer to the ending, there were so many revelations being thrown at us that some of them didn't have the impact I think the show wanted them to have... Still, I can't say I didn't enjoy watching it...
His & Hers is one of those series that makes you say, "Okay, just one more episode," because you genuinely want to know what happened and who is lying. Even when the story gets a little ridiculous, the curiosity keeps you going...
I wouldn't say it's the best murder mystery I've watched and I definitely think the story could have been handled better but the performances, the atmosphere and the constant suspicion between the characters were enough to keep me watching until the end.
In all, His & Hers is a decent weekend binge if you enjoy
murder mysteries, complicated relationships and stories where you can't completely trust anybody... It has some really good moments, some questionable ones, and an ending that I think people will either enjoy or completely roll their eyes at.
