Hello, friends at Movies & TV, I hope you’re all well. I recently had the chance to watch the film Hit Man; it’s not a new film and, although it seems to have been well received, I hadn’t heard of it until recently. It has a rather interesting plot, it’s funny and also has touches of drama. I don’t usually watch many action films, but this one isn’t solely focused on that genre; it goes beyond that, and I really enjoyed it so much that I loved the story and how ridiculously ironic and funny it was. Hola amigos de Movies & TV, espero que se encuentren bien. Hace poco tuve la oportunidad de ver la película Hit Man, no es una película nueva y aunque al parecer tuvo una recepción positiva, no me había enterado de que existía hasta hace poco. Tiene una trama bastante interesante, divertida y también con toques de dramatismo. No soy de ver muchas películas que sean de acción, pero esta no se centra únicamente en este género, va más allá y realmente la disfrute tanto que me encanto la historia y lo ridículamente irónica y graciosa que fue. Hit Man tells the story of Gary Johnson (Glen Powell), a university lecturer who leads a fairly ordinary life, although he occasionally takes on a side job to earn some extra money. In this job, he has now been given the role of a ‘hitman’ to ensure that people with stories and a desire for revenge fall into a kind of trap where Gary is the supposed hitman, receives the money up front, and then has enough evidence to hand over to the people who wanted to have someone killed. Gary is the complete opposite of the killer character, until he meets a beautiful woman who makes him question whether what he does as a "side job" is right, or whether he should simply leave that job behind.
Hit Man nos cuenta la historia de Gary Johnson (Glen Powell) un profesor universitario que tiene una vida bastante normal, aunque de vez en cuando tiene un trabajo extra que le permite ganar algo de dinero. En este trabajo que ahora le han otorgado el papel de ser un "asesino" para lograr que personas con historias y deseos de venganza puedan caer en una especie de trampa dónde Gary sea el supuesto asesino, reciba el dinero por adelantado, y luego tenga las pruebas suficientes para entregar a las personas que querían asesinar a alguien. Gary es completamente lo opuesto al personaje del asesino, hasta que conoce a una bella mujer que le hace dudar de si está bien lo que él hace como "trabajo secundario" o si debería simplemente dejar ese trabajo atrás.
The film caught my attention because lots of people had left positive reviews on Letterboxd. I’d also noticed at some point that it was a film people were talking about a lot, so I decided to watch it in the hope that it wouldn’t just be another action film with a bit of cheap comedy and some obligatory romance. It really is a story I’ve never seen in other films before; the idea of being an assassin but at the same time not being one, so that you can collect the money and also help the authorities, is something that sounds crazy but could actually happen, as in Hit Man.
La película me llamo la atención porque muchas personas dejaron buenas opiniones en Letterboxd. Además, también vi en algún momento que fue una película de la que muchas personas comentaron, así que me decidí a verla con la esperanza de que no fuese solo una película más de acción con un poco de comedia barata y algo de romance obligado. Realmente es una historia que nunca antes había visto en otras películas, la idea de ser un asesino pero a la vez no serlo para que puedas cobrar el dinero y así también ayudar a la justicia, es algo que suena loco pero puede llegar a suceder como en Hit Man.
Richard Linklater directed the film; he is also the director of the Before trilogy and the film Boyhood, all of which are great productions that I really enjoyed when I watched them. In this film, he further explores that human side, pitting Gary’s character against his other identities, making him feel for a moment that being Gary isn’t as exciting or fun as being someone else with a different lifestyle. I didn’t know he was the director, but from what I’ve seen previously in the films I mentioned, he’s someone who focuses heavily on stories, particularly on the aspect of human identity, so I’d like to see more from this director.

En esta película muestra aún más ese lado humano en el que enfrenta al personaje de Gary y sus otras identidades, llegando a sentir por un momento que ser Gary no es tan emocionante ni divertido como ser cualquier otra persona con un estilo diferente de vida. No sabía que él era el director, pero por lo que vi anteriormente en las películas que les comenté, es alguien que se enfoca mucho en las historias sobre todo en la parte de la identidad humana, por lo que me gustaría ver más de este director.
The appeal of blending genres such as romance, action and drama means that, although the story is a bit long, it doesn’t feel that way at all. You start with an idea and then everything becomes really entertaining, especially the part where Madison’s character (Adria Arjona) appears – a woman seeking the services of Gary, or rather Ron, as he introduces himself to her. She also wants to kill someone, but it’s none other than her husband, a man who, according to her, oppresses her, won’t let her live in peace and has a bad temper, psychologically abusing her. Madison tells Ron (Gary) all this, and he genuinely feels he shouldn’t take on the job, so he tells her she’d be better off finding a way to get a divorce rather than getting herself into even bigger trouble.
El enganche de tener géneros mezclados como el romance, la acción y el drama hacen que la historia aunque es un poco larga, no se sienta del todo de esa manera. Comienzas con una idea y luego todo se vuelve super divertido, sobre todo la parte en la que aparece el personaje de Madison (Adria Arjona), una mujer que busca los servicios de Gary o en todo caso Ron como se hace presentar ante ella. Ella desea también asesinar a alguien, pero no es más que su esposo, un hombre que según ella la tiene oprimida, no la deja vivir tranquila y tiene un mal carácter, abusando de ella psicológicamente. Todo esto le cuenta Madison y Ron (Gary) realmente siente que no debe hacer ese trabajo así que le dice que mejor busque la manera de divorciarse y no meterse en un problema más grande.
But the chemistry between Gary and Madison grows, and it’s impossible for them not to end up in a relationship—essentially a secret one—hidden from her husband and the police, who are on Madison’s trail because they suspect she wants to kill her husband; and because if he does die, she’d be left with a large insurance payout, which makes her even more suspect in whatever happens. Watching Gary’s double life—being Ron with Madison and then taking off the mask to remain Gary whilst working for the police—is really entertaining to watch. There aren’t any major action scenes or fights, but there is one that took me by surprise and made me laugh at the irony, along with how the film ends.
Pero la química entre ambos: Gary y Madison, crece y es imposible que no terminen teniendo una relación básicamente a escondidas, del marido y de la policía que está detrás de Madison por las sospechas que tienen de querer matar a su esposo y por qué este si muere, le dejaría un seguro con una gran cantidad de dinero, por lo que la hace aún más sospechosa de cualquier cosa que suceda. Ver la doble vida de Gary siendo Ron con Madison y luego quitándose la máscara para seguir siendo Gary mientras trabaja para la policía es realmente divertido de mirar, no hay grandes escenas de acción o peleas pero si hay una que fue inesperada para mí y que me hizo reír por la ironía junto con como termina después la película.
If you get the chance, do give this film a watch – you’ll probably find it on Netflix or any other streaming platform.
