Plot
The film introduces us to two siblings, Trish and Darry Jenner who are on a car ride home from college vacation. On the way, a huge old truck pulls up behind them and threatens them with its horn to get them off the road. It passes them after a while, but later they see the truck parked again in what appears to be an abandoned church, behind it is the driver, all hooded and wearing a hat, carrying what appears to be wrapped corpses, which he throws into a pipe in the basement of the building. He realizes that the brothers saw him and begins to chase them. Terrified and thinking that he is a murderer or someone dangerous, they do everything possible to escape from him, but their grave mistake is to return - after getting rid of him - to the abandoned church and see what is down in the basement, finding there the same hell.

La película nos presenta a dos hermanos, Trish y Darry Jenner que están de viaje en un auto hacia su casa, luego de salir de vacaciones de la universidad. Durante el camino, un viejo y enorme camión se les acerca por detrás y los amenaza con su corneta para que se salgan de la carretera. Este pasa de largo al rato, pero más adelante ven de nuevo al camión estacionado en lo que parece ser una iglesia abandonada, detrás está el conductor todo encapuchado y con sombrero cargando lo que parece son cadáveres envueltos que los tira en una tubería que hay en el sótano de dicho edificio. Aside from the deformed and cannibalistic mountain mens, another of the horror movies I most watched as a kid was this film (and its first sequel, the only one I accept exists), which I also don't remember how many times I've seen it and that it has traumatized me. And the premise of a mysterious guy driving a curious old truck full of corpses is shocking to say the least. The level of horror and suspense that this movie transmitted and continues to transmit is impressive. Not to mention the amount of shocking scenes, symbologies, references and the story they try to tell us in this feature film. The way of presenting and developing a creature that can easily be the protagonist of many people's nightmares, in addition to the trauma and terror for sure for many children of that time who saw this film as I did, deserves that even today and after more than two decades this tremendous gem of supernatural horror is still remembered.

Aparte de los montañeses deformes y caníbales, otra de las películas de terror que más veía de pequeño era esta película (y su primera secuela, la única que yo acepto que existe), la cual tampoco recuerdo la cantidad de veces que la he visto y que me ha traumado. Y es que la premisa de un sujeto misterioso que maneja un curioso y viejo camión repleto de cadáveres es cuanto menos impactante. El nivel de horror y suspenso que transmitía y sigue transmitiendo esta película es impresionante. Eso sin mencionar la cantidad de escenas impactantes, las simbologías, las referencias y la historia que nos intentan contar en este largometraje. La forma de presentar y desarrollar a una criatura que fácilmente puede ser el protagonista de las pesadillas de mucha gente, además del trauma y el terror seguro para muchos niños de esa época que vieron como yo esta cinta, merece que aún en la actualidad y después de más de dos décadas se siga recordando esta tremenda joya del terror sobrenatural.

If we talk about the film, the first thing to highlight is the heavy introduction given to the antagonist in the first few minutes. At a certain point in the first act we see what appears to be a mysterious and evidently very dangerous character. The protagonists and siblings do little more than give the story development, making unwise decisions like going to the place where this creepy being throws and hides his corpses, which to top it off is the bottom floor of a church (I think with this they illustrate representing heaven as the church and hell as the floor or basement). But this decision leads us to see the first of many impressive scenarios that this movie has, which I won't give any spoilers for those who haven't seen it yet. After that, we can realize that this character the brothers are escaping from is not an ordinary human being, but a monster, a demon.
As for the development of the antagonist and the horrible chase he has with the brothers and protagonists in the rest of the movie, it is worth noting that I am very struck by the way in which they turn this antagonist little by little into a real monster. If at the beginning we realized that he was someone dangerous, in the rest of the film we witness that he is much worse than he seems. Honestly, this film has one of the best introductions and developments of monsters or creatures in the modern horror genre. And the mixture of suspense with mystery and horror is fascinating and is felt in this film, with a level of gore and horror that is supernatural and grotesque at the same time. What can be highlighted only about the protagonist brothers, on the other hand, is the relationship we see them have from the beginning, which makes the ending feel like a strong low blow that leaves you thinking and with your heart in your hand for a while.

Si hablamos de la película, lo primero que hay que resaltar es la pesada introducción que le dan al antagonista en los primeros minutos. En cierto momento del primer acto vemos lo que parece ser un personaje misterioso y evidentemente muy peligroso. Los protagonistas y hermanos no hacen mucho más que darle desarrollo a la historia, tomando decisiones poco sensatas como ir al lugar donde este escalofriante ser tira y esconde a sus cadáveres, que para colmo es el piso de abajo de una iglesia (creo que con esto ilustran representan el cielo como la iglesia y el infierno como el piso o el sótano). Pero esta decisión nos lleva a ver el primero de muchos escenarios impresionantes que tiene esta película, la cual no daré ningún spoiler para los que aún no la hayan visto. Luego de eso, podemos darnos cuenta de que este personaje del cual los hermanos están escapando no es un ser humano común y corriente, sino un monstruo, un demonio.
En cuanto al desarrollo del antagonista y la horrible persecución que tiene con los hermanos y protagonistas en el resto de la película, cabe destacar que me llama mucho la atención la forma en la que convierten a este antagonista poco a poco en un auténtico monstruo. Si al principio nos dimos cuenta de que era alguien peligroso, en el resto de la cinta presenciamos que es un ser muchísimo peor de lo que parece. Sinceramente, esta película tiene una de las introducciones y desarrollos mejor hechos de monstruos o criaturas del género del terror moderno. Y es que la mezcla del suspenso con el misterio y el terror es fascinante y se siente bastante en esta cinta, con un nivel de gore y horror que es sobrenatural y grotesco a la vez. Lo que se puede destacar únicamente de los hermanos protagonistas, por otro lado, es la relación que vemos que tienen desde el principio, lo cual hace que el final se sienta como un fuerte golpe bajo que te deja pensando y con el corazón en la mano por un rato.

Finally, let's talk about the technical and visual style of this film, which does not have a big budget, but still shows the excellent production work it has. With a dark and somber tone in the cameras and costumes, the color palette, the shots and deserted places. The mix of sounds like the crows and the wind blowing, the horrible bugle of the truck or the same song from which the original name of the film and the story of this iconic creature are based; all this and more perfectly defines how great this supernatural horror film is. The sound effects are excellently done, as is the soundtrack it has. The visual effects, while not the best, have the mixture of some practical effects and the excellent makeup of the creature, which makes it earn a few points in its favor. In short, a film that defines very well the best of the horror genre during the era of the 2000s and that has aged very well today, being even superior by far to its current sequels. An excellent choice that I recommend you watch this "Month of Horror".
Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating as far as the supernatural horror and suspense genre is concerned.

Por último, hablemos del estilo técnico y visual que tiene esta película, la cual no cuenta con un gran presupuesto, pero que aún así se nota el excelente trabajo de producción que tiene. Con un tono oscuro y sombrío en las cámara y las vestimentas, la paleta de colores, los planos y lugares desiertos. La mezcla de sonidos como los cuervos y el viento soplando, la horrible corneta del camión o la misma canción de la cual se basan el nombre original de la película y la historia de esta icónica criatura; todo esto y más define perfectamente lo grandiosa que es esta película de terror sobrenatural. Los efectos de sonido están excelentemente hechos, al igual que la banda sonora que tiene. Los efectos visuales, si bien no son de los mejores, estos cuentan con la mezcla de algunos efectos prácticos y del excelente maquillaje de la criatura, la cual hace que se gane unos cuantos puntos a su favor. En fin, una película que define muy bien lo mejor del género del terror durante la época de los años 2000s y que ha envejecido muy bien en la actualidad, siendo aún superior por mucho a sus próximas secuelas actuales. Una excelente opción que te recomiendo que veas en este “Mes del Terror”.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género del terror sobrenatural y el suspenso.
