Hello cinema fans. After having talked about several masterpieces of science fiction cinema related to aliens and invasions, today it's time to talk about a movie that I recently remembered having seen at least a couple of times when I was a kid. However, the only nostalgia I have for this film, so criticized at the time, is the affinity I have with the actor who plays the main character, who is one of those actors that I have always been fascinated to see since then in very popular and successful movies. But unfortunately this is not the case, being a feature film that has been rejected even by science and cinema due to its plot and terrible ending. Plot
The film begins in 1959, in an elementary school in Massachusetts, United States, where they are about to celebrate its opening with a special event. This would be a contest where students will have to imagine how life will be in 50 years in the future in the form of drawings. However, among the participants there is a very strange and asocial girl who, instead of drawing, starts writing a lot of numbers on her letter, thus filling the page almost completely. This, along with the other drawings the children made are stored in letters in a Time Capsule that is subsequently kept and sealed at the school. Fifty years later, the students of this era have the opportunity to see the capsule opened and receive these letters that their ancestors made. One of the students receives the letter from the strange girl who wrote pure numbers on it and takes it home. To begin with, I want to make it clear that this is one of those alien movies that doesn't seem to be about aliens at all. If until then I thought "The Invasion" was one of the worst alien movies I've ever seen, this Nicolas Cage movie is a hell of a lot worse. And I'm not just saying that because it can simply look great as a disaster movie (among which there are several I'd like to talk about right at the end of this 'invasions and aliens' section), but because of the poor way of presenting and developing these space visitors that, in the end, seem more like a bad reference to angels and the like, really. But the most disappointing thing of all is not that, but the way they waste Nicolas' talent with a role as generic and unconvincing as the one he plays in this film that, to top it off, lasts two hours that -with a story of this style- is too exhausting to watch. Anyway, if it weren't for that incomprehensible nostalgia that this film and the actor who stars in it generates in me, I wouldn't bring it to this special and I would have forgotten it completely.

We meet the girl who made the letter full of numbers and then we see what happens next. After everything I told you above, this MIT professor with traits of being a depressive and melancholic person due to the loss of his wife by an accident, tries to look for some scientific or reasonable explanation about this discovery he has found in a sealed letter from 50 years ago that was given to his son. Many coincidences occur, plus a couple of catastrophes that make him realize that what is happening is nothing "random" as he had always wanted to believe (including even his wife's accident). But that's not all, as both his son and himself are visited every night by certain shadowy-looking people who don't speak... but whisper things in the boy's ear.
Before talking about the movie in general, I want to mention some details about the character played by Nicolas Cage. This one, despite showing us that he is a scientist and teacher of one of the most recognized institutes in the country and the world, we can see how he shows a somewhat awkward and depressing behavior. I understand that he still feels hurt by the death of his wife and that his relationship with his son is not the best I have known so far. While I understand that they try to give some scientific explanation to what is happening with the chart full of numbers that relate to the dates of the catastrophes that have happened and that seem to be happening in the near future, there are moments where we can see how this protagonist is quite pigeonholed in that depressive and melancholic character. I'm not saying that this is wrong in the case of Nicolas, who has adopted a very similar acting and acting style, but we don't often see him playing someone who looks all dull and sad. Although in a way I can understand him going through this "character development" with everything that happens during the movie.

Empecemos hablando de la historia que nos intentan contar en esta película, la cual desde el principio podemos notar que posee un ambiente sombrío, oscuro y demasiado tenso, perfecto para una película de terror, la verdad. Conocemos a la niña que hizo la carta llena de números y luego vemos lo que sucede después. Luego de todo lo que les conté arriba, este profesor del MIT con rasgos de ser una persona depresiva y melancólica debido a la pérdida de su esposa por un accidente, intenta buscar alguna explicación científica o razonable acerca de este descubrimiento que ha encontrado en una carta sellada de hace 50 años que le dieron a su hijo. Muchas casualidades ocurren, además de un par de catástrofes que lo hacen caer en cuenta de que lo que está sucediendo no es nada “al azar” como él siempre había querido creer (incluyendo incluso el accidente de su esposa). Antes de hablar de la película en general, quiero mencionar algunos detalles del personaje que interpreta Nicolas Cage. Este, a pesar de demostrarnos que es un científico y maestro de uno de los institutos más reconocidos del país y del mundo, podemos ver cómo este demuestra una conducta un tanto torpe y deprimente. Entiendo que se sienta aún dolido por la muerte de su esposa y que su relación con su hijo no sea la mejor de las que he conocido hasta ahora. Si bien entiendo que intenten darle alguna explicación científica a lo que está sucediendo con la carta llena de números que se relacionan con las fechas de los catástrofes que han ocurrido y que parece que van a ocurrir en un futuro próximo, hay momentos en los que podemos ver cómo este protagonista se encasilla bastante en ese personaje depresivo y melancólico. Ojo, no digo que esto esté mal en el caso de Nicolas quien ha adoptado un estilo de interpretación y actuación muy similares entre sí, pero que no muchas veces lo vemos interpretar a alguien con este aspecto todo apagado y triste. Aunque en cierta parte entiendo que pase por este “desarrollo de personaje” con todo lo que sucede durante la película.

Perhaps and it is the same feeling that gives the film from the beginning and during its two hours of duration that makes us feel that each character we meet perfectly enters into that melancholic and depressive atmosphere that we see. That and the secondary characters that appear the most always have something sad or traumatic to tell about their lives. While we see a small family trying to cope with a great loss, they are now cornered in a series of not at all normal events that will put into question the lives of millions of people (not to say the whole world). That's why I don't really like the story that this movie tries to tell us, since it revolves around a dark and chaotic world that seems to be doomed to destruction while many things happen that make no sense or explanation at the moment. But while this helps a little to maintain the mystery and suspense that they try to develop in this film, the poor and absurd ending that they give us ends up ruining everything that minimally tries to save from the beginning. A denouement completely devoid of sense and motivation to give the good taste to this work that is not sure what they tried to do from the beginning.
And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I don't like sad endings, but what we see in this ending tries to be both sad and "happy" which leaves anyone wishing they hadn't wasted two hours of their time watching this movie. But what I dislike the most, apart from several terrible performances of some characters and the main plot it has, is the way they try to relate everything that happens to biblical or mystical themes. The biblical references, the drawings, the "prophecies" and the way they illustrate these mysterious characters lurking in the dark (who are supposedly super evolved extraterrestrial beings that can communicate telepathically with children) with angels. All this makes the scientific side they try to sell us in this movie end up being something more interpretive and symbolic than it seemed at first. Not to mention the issue of "solar flares" which science itself has denied in terms of what we see in the film, something they bring up at the end and try to tie it all together with messages or news in the background to give it some sense. Anyway, while I admire the excellent work that Nicolas Cage always does in his films, I must mention that not even that saves him in this case.

Tal vez y sea la misma sensación que da la película desde el principio y durante sus dos horas de duración lo que nos hace sentir que cada personaje que conocemos entra perfectamente en ese ambiente melancólico y depresivo que vemos. Eso y que los personajes secundarios que más aparecen tienen siempre algo triste o traumático que contar de sus vidas. Mientras vemos a una pequeña familia intentar afrontar una gran pérdida, estos se ven ahora acorralados en una serie de sucesos para nada normales que pondrán en tela de juicio la vida de millones de personas (para no decir el mundo entero). Es por eso que no me agrada mucho la historia que nos intenta contar esta película, ya que gira mucho en un mundo oscuro y demasiado caótico que parece estar condenado a la destrucción mientras suceden muchas cosas que en el momento no tienen sentido ni explicación. Pero si bien esto ayuda un poco a mantener el misterio y el suspenso que intentan desarrollar en esta película, el final tan pobre y absurdo que nos dan termina de arruinar todo lo que mínimamente se intenta salvar desde un principio. Un desenlace completamente carente de sentido y motivación alguno para darle el buen gusto a esta obra que no se sabe bien qué intentaron hacer desde el principio.
Y no me malinterpreten, no digo que no me gusten los finales tristes, pero lo que vemos en este final intenta ser algo tanto triste como a la vez “feliz” lo cual deja a cualquiera con ganas de no haber perdido dos horas de su tiempo viendo esta película. Pero lo que más me desagrada, aparte de varias terribles interpretaciones de algunos personajes y la trama principal que tiene, es la manera en la que intentan relacionar todo lo que sucede con temas bíblicos o místicos. Las referencias bíblicas, los dibujos, las “profecías” y la manera en la que ilustran a estos personajes misteriosos que acechan en la oscuridad (que supuestamente son seres extraterrestres súper evolucionados que se pueden comunicar de manera telepática con los niños) con ángeles. Todo esto hace que el lado científico que nos intentan vender en esta película termine siendo algo más interpretativo y simbólico de lo que parecía al principio. Eso sin mencionar el tema de las “llamaradas solares” lo cual la misma ciencia ha desmentido en cuanto a lo que vemos en la película, algo que sacan al final y que intentan unir todo con mensajes o noticias en segundo plano para darle algo de sentido. En fin, si bien admiro el excelente trabajo que siempre realiza Nicolas Cage en sus películas, debo de mencionar que ni siquiera eso lo salva en este caso.

Finally, let's talk about the technical side of this film. It can be said that, apart from having Nicolas Cage as the main character, another of the few good things that this film has is its visual section, which manages to give us that somber, cold look, with dark tones and many shadows and neutral shades. The moving shots in found footage style or the chase sequences that the film has are not bad either. But what I like the most are the visual effects, since as far as catastrophes are concerned, it is what most seeks to highlight; with very well done explosions, shocking crashes and visions of forests in flames or the world burning completely. The use of computer effects along with the views and panoramic shots we see are very well done for their time. On the other hand, there are the sound effects, which try to stand out with the theme of the whispers heard by the children or the moments when visitors appear. There is also the soundtrack which, is something that brings me pure nostalgia with this film (mostly because it is very similar to the soundtrack of another film that curiously enough this same director has also worked on). However, the way it is used in this case manages to give us those impressions and impacts that give us the incredible sequences that the film has. Otherwise, it's just a film that tries to be something more than it should have been from the beginning.
Personally, I give it a rating of 6/10 as far as the science fiction and suspense genre is concerned.

Por último, hablemos del lado técnico que tiene esta película. Se puede decir que, aparte de tener como protagonista a Nicolas Cage, otra de las escasas cosas buenas que tiene esta cinta es su apartado visual, al cual consigue darnos ese aspecto sombrío, frío, con tonos oscuros y muchas sombras y matices neutros. Los planos en movimiento al estilo de metraje encontrado o las secuencias de persecución que tiene la película tampoco están mal. Pero lo que más me gusta son los efectos visuales, ya que en cuanto a catástrofes se refiere, es lo que más se busca destacar; con explosiones muy bien hechas, choques impactantes y visiones de bosques en llamas o el mundo ardiendo por completo. El uso de los efectos hechos a computadora junto con las vistas y los planos panorámicos que vemos están muy bien hechos para su época. Por otro lado, están los efectos de sonido, los cuales intentan destacarse con el tema de los susurros que escuchan los niños o los momentos en los que aparecen los visitantes. También está la banda sonora que, es algo que me trae nostalgia pura con esta película (más que nada porque se parece mucho a la banda sonora de otra película que curiosamente también ha trabajado este mismo director). Sin embargo, la forma en la que es usada en este caso consigue darnos esas impresiones e impactos que nos dan las secuencias increíbles que tiene la película. De resto, es solo una película que intenta ser algo más de lo que debió de haber sido desde un principio.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 6/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción y el suspenso.
