  1. Lady Bird || A Coming of Age Delight@jhymi529d

I’m hoping it’s just by chance that I’ve been seeing a lot of films starring Saoirse Ronan but I’m beginning to really see a lot of similar traits in the kinds of roles she plays. I love coming of age films a lot. There’s always this familiar feeling of stepping into a new phase of life and all the challenges that particular age comes with. I’ve been hearing a lot of good reports about this particular film and I thought, why not?

    Lady Bird (2017)

Christine MacPherson is a senior in a Catholic high school in Sacramento, California. She calls herself Lady Bird and uses that to introduce herself to everyone. Her family is going through financial challenges but Lady Bird still longs to go to a prestigious college in the East coast which she refers to as a “place of culture.”

Lady Bird feels that her greatest antagonist is her mother, who has a strong, intense personality like hers. They constantly bicker at each other, and Lady Bird even jumps out of a moving car to prove a point to her mother when she says she is ungrateful and calls her college dreams unrealistic. According to Lady Bird, her mother may love her but does not like her.

From boyfriends who later turn out to be gay, poor math results, ditching best friends for the popular kids, underwhelming sex, college applications, suspensions, lies and everything in between, Lady Bird goes through it all. All in the quest to truly determine where here love lies and those who love her. Is it a kill or be killed situation?

    My Thoughts and Rating

I’d like to start by saying I wish I knew what the name Lady Bird implied in the end of this film. What made her choose the name and most of all, what significance did the name have to her as a person, the movie as a whole, or was it just about being free? (Which I'm just implying anyway because I'm a literature student).

I resonated with this movie a lot, like I said initially, because I kind of saw myself in Lady Bird a bit. Not in the way she acted and certainly not in the decisions she made, but specifically in the relationship she had with her mother. My Mom and I are quite strong-willed and have even stronger personalities. So, at a certain point, we were almost always at loggerheads. Hence, how easy it was back then to think she hated me.

So, it was the bittersweet kind of nostalgia that filled me when it came to Lady Bird and her mother, Marion’s relationship. Of course, there are only so many things you can get away with in an African household and I certainly wasn’t as expressive in our arguments, lol. But of course, like most of us realize, we weren’t being hated at all.

Lady Bird was quite an annoying personality, though. Constantly doing one thing or the other that made me wonder what exactly was going on in her head and what exactly she was trying to prove doing the things she did. However, I remembered that she was a teenager and this was a coming of age film, so it was imperative that silly decisions would be made.

Officially putting it out there. I’m not a fan of Timothée Chalamet. I’m not a fan of his and I find all the hype around him ridiculously amusing. I’ve not seen many of his films but the few I’ve seen feature him acting in a so-called mysterious, nonchalant way that I do not find the least bit charming. Or maybe it’s just the roles I see him playing in the films I happen to see.

At the end of the day, I appreciate how realistic this film was. No, the girl doesn’t fall for some guy and then see the bad boy, and they live happily ever after. There are a lot of intricacies that make it look like you’re viewing the actual life story of someone. It's quite delightful, to say the very least. And I do not regret the movie, even though I may just as soon forget it. A 3.9/5 stars from me.

Hello, I hope you are doing well, friends of Movies and TV Shows. This time I want to talk to you about the movie Lady Bird, I wanted to share with you what I think of it. This movie is Greta Gerwig's directorial debut and tells us about life in the early 2000s, the movie follows Christine "Lady Bird" during her senior year of high school as she navigates the difficult and often unpredictable waters of adolescence. From the moment the movie begins we get into the life of this girl, actress Saoirse Ronan gives a very good performance, perfectly embodying the angst of being a teenager accompanied by a certain ambition and vulnerability, her interpretation feels super real, making it easy to connect with her and her dreams.
One of the most striking aspects of this movie is the way it teaches us the complexity of teenage life without resorting to the classic clichés. Lady Bird is not a perfect protagonist, she has several flaws and is sometimes selfish... and like many others, she makes some questionable decisions, but that is precisely what makes her so relatable... we've all been there, trying to figure out who we are and being curious about what the future holds for us, trying to fit into the world. Lady Bird's insistence on her nickname, is more than just a teenage rebellion... to me it felt like a declaration of independence, a way of drawing her own identity separate from that of her family. The way the director approaches this subject is very powerful, showing how our environment can shape and change us even when we try to break free from it.

The protagonist's love-hate relationship with her hometown is something that many viewers will surely relate to. The presence of the city is imposing, influencing this girl's decisions. It's a reminder that our roots, as much as we may resist them, play a significant role in shaping us and what we want to aspire to or become, so it really does make for an honest and nuanced portrait.
Laurie Metcalf gives a phenomenal performance as Marion, the mother of the protagonist, creating a character that can be both frustrating and empathetic. The dynamic between these two is the heart of the film, showing the complicated relationship of love-resentment and understanding that often characterizes parent-child relationships. Their interactions are at times painfully realistic, full of sharp words and misunderstandings, but also moments of tenderness.
It's refreshing to see a film that isn't afraid to show the messiness of a family life, presenting an imperfect family. The scenes between these two are some that are sure to touch the hearts of many, as they have a way of connecting with you, either in a good way or in a sadder way. Gerwig's direction shines in these moments of emotional complicity, allowing the performances to feel very authentic. On the other hand, I feel that the pacing of the film is perfect. It reflects the frenetic energy of a teenage life, while occasionally presenting us with moments of reflection.

The supporting cast also seemed really good to me.. each character feels completely different and brings certain things to Lady Bird’s journey, from her best friend Julie to her various love interests, each relationship adds depth to this girl’s world.. I found that interesting. Visually, the movie has an aesthetic that feels nostalgic, but doesn’t get exclusively sentimental, I thought that was good.. the costume design and set decoration perfectly captured the era, managing to transport me to a time of strange telephones and very interesting pop-punk music..
Among other things that I could notice about this movie was its ability to balance humor and pain... comedy and sadness.. there are very funny moments that are perfectly interspersed with very emotional scenes, this balance feels very true to life.. after all, that’s what it means to be a teenager, one minute you’re laughing with your friends and the next you’re crying with many existential questions about your future, and it can even happen to you in adulthood.. it’s something that has happened to me as an adult many times.
But well, this girl’s journey of self-discovery is universal and feels very personal… it’s so interesting to see her try on different identities… she wants to feel like herself and we see her struggling to figure out what she really wants, it’s a messy, strange and very painful process, but a necessary one. The movie doesn’t offer easy answers, nor does it present you with a linear idea of what a teenager should do, on the contrary, it lets her be the one to figure it all out… and that’s okay, everyone has to grow up experiencing for themselves what they really need… and that’s exactly what starts our journey into adulthood… that’s what makes us mature.

Lady Bird is a film that I loved.. it is emotionally resonant and captures the essence of life with an uncommon authenticity. It is a testament to the skill of this director as well as the outstanding performances of the entire cast, I really enjoyed the exploration of identity, family dynamics and the impact of our environment on who we become.. it is both thought provoking and deeply sad. While you can see it is not a flashy blockbuster or the most resonant or well known film, I feel that it packs a lot of punch.. I think this film is very powerful for its quiet moments of truth and the ability to find the extraordinary in the ordinary, it is very thought provoking..
Even if you are already an adult, it can serve as a journey of self discovery, and if you have children who are teenagers or young adults, I think you could use this film to try to understand them a little more, and most importantly to learn to let them be what they want to be, in a way that they can be themselves.. as each person is unique and must decide their own path. I give it a powerful 9/10... it's an almost perfect coming of age story that manages to feel timeless, if you're a current teenager or an adult it will surely make you think. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it, it reminds us of the beauty and pain of growing up... and well, this has been my review, I hope you liked it... Take care of yourselves, I'll leave the trailer down here. See you.

Hello dear Hiveblog community, I hope you are doing well. Today I want to talk to you about a "teen" movie which I saw and left me with a weird feeling in my mouth and I'm talking about "Lady Bird", a really good film that portrays real problems of teenagers among other little things.

We found this movie on Prime Video and it is not so long really, you can enjoy it in a tired day or a night before going to sleep. We can find Saoirse Ronan "Lady Bird" Timothee Chalamet "Kyle Scheible", Lucas Hedges "Danny O`Neill", Laurie Metcalf "Marion McPherson", Beanie Feldstein "Julie Steffans", Tracy Letts "Larry McPherson".The story is about a girl, who calls herself "Lady Bird". She goes to her last year of high school to a private catholic high school where she runs into a bunch of rich people while she is there for a scholarship and is of lower middle class status. In the course of that year she has to go through several "teenage" problems and others a little more serious like what she is going to do with her future or what she can rely on financially to be able to get what she wants.

The truth is that I didn't expect anything from this movie, because I didn't know her, the truth is that the actress was slightly known to me but I have seen her in images with phrases from other movies like "Desde Mi Cielo". The story itself, from the beginning introduces us to a girl who is noticeably problematic so to speak, since she even throws herself out of the car when her mother is reprimanding her, honestly if it was just the attitude of the character I stop watching it because I found it quite irritating the truth. Something that caught my attention is to be able to see a movie that talks about Catholicism in the United States because most of the things I've seen that have touched the point is Spanish speaking or is from Spain, so it was interesting but as a friend says "very few people come out religious in Catholic schools".

I feel that the role of Lady Bird is quite complex in a certain way even though I personally felt identified at certain points I think we are shown a girl lacking personality who is discovering so much, personality-wise, psychologically and sexually speaking. We are presented with situations such as disillusionment, appearing in a world where you don't fit into anything, the discovery of sex, drugs and alcohol and I think at some point some of us lived some of this in our youth (I feel very old hahahah). But in spite of everything I can say that what touched me the most was the family situation in which she lives, where money affects her dreams, where she feels misunderstood by her mother and on the other hand we have parents who give her what they can but it's not enough.

    PicsArt_01-19-08.15.47.jpgFuente

    IMG_20230119_182114.jpg

I felt very divided in the conflicts that we were shown between mother and daughter, since I understood the economic part and Marion's sacrifice for her daughter to have what was moderately possible and at the same time she wanted to look for a future that they could "afford" but on the other hand I understand Lady Bird who wants to know more things, I feel that the relationship she had with her father touched me a lot because it reminded me of the relationship I have with my own father and his support for his daughter to fulfill her dreams.

    PicsArt_01-19-08.25.04.jpgFuente

    IMG_20230119_182114.jpg

I feel that it had very jovial problems, that were treated in a quite normal way and at the same time made me see that both sides are fine, many times when we are young we see our parents as the bad guys of the story when in reality they are people who love us. I mean Lady Bird has a little bit of everything because even black humor, I was disconcerted when they were eating the skittles as if they were just another Dorito or when they dealt with the abortion issue, and in this movie it is perfect "at least in history" because even the first time it was quite uncomfortable.

    PicsArt_01-19-08.41.10.jpgFuente

    IMG_20230119_182114.jpg

I mean nothing in the story is told like the typical teen movies, but something that is perfect is what they show us on camera, I feel that everything is a bit artistic. An example of this is when they light up her eyes in the hospital because of an over dose of alcohol, she looked terrible, or when she was outside the store looking at a porn magazine because she was of age, these are little things that are nice to see for the eye because you can see the effort behind the camera to make a good movie. I give it a 9/10, I identified myself in wanting to dream more than my possibilities, in the fights, in the friendships and even in being what you are not to fit in. But in the end I understood with this movie let's accept ourselves and if we are in that moment of our life that our family or parents don't accept us, let everything flow at some point in life they must do it, right?

One of the problems she has with her mother is that Lady Bird wants to move to another city far away from where she lives and her mother doesn't accept this because she is afraid of it and because she loves her very much although Lady Bird doesn't always realize it.

Lady Bird talks about changes, challenges, moments of crying and fun, it talks about adolescence itself and this stage that is so difficult for many to go through.

I give it a 10/10 for the cast, the wonderful performances and a good plot despite being a teen movie.

Thanks for reading me, I look forward to reading your comments💕😚🥰.

The character Lady Bird is a character who feels misunderstood and does not fit into any social group, although her problems may not be the most serious she also wants to be understood, the film develops a teenage story directed at a teenage audience, they try topics such as first love, the idealization that we give to certain people and what it is like to be a "rebellious" adolescent in a conservative society.

The truth is that the film is quite entertaining, if I feel that it is focused on a young audience, since it is easier to empathize with the situations that the protagonist lives, this is not a bad point, but it seems important to highlight it. this film has excellent performances, in the cast we can find Timothée Chalamet or Laura Marano.

I feel that the movie manages to convey what it wants, since by immersing ourselves in the story we manage to understand the character a little more and really see why he acts in a particular way.

I did not know this movie, I saw it because it was recommended to me, and I must accept that I liked it more than I thought, it is quite enjoyable.

It is common opinion that in the last 20 years cinema has lost the power and auteurism that had always distinguished the seventh art in the various phases of its history.

Leaving aside the validity or otherwise of this metropolitan legend, we can attest that in the last two years cinema seems to have given not only great films but also new great authors.

Think of very young rising stars like Damien Chazelle and Xavier Dolan, passing through Martin McDonagh and Jordan Peele.

It's enough to take a look at the 10 titles that have populated the nominations for best film for the 2018 Oscar to realize that we are facing a particularly flourishing and inspired period for cinematography. Three Posters in Ebbing Missouri has undoubtedly been the masterpiece of the last 12 months, with Shape Of Water enchanting and Dunkirk exploding in theatres in all its power. A lot of auteur cinema thanks to the wonderful Il Filo Nascosto and Call Me By Your Name, a lot of history with The Darkest Hour and The Post, up to the strange Yellow Horror of Get Out.

To accompany these excellent films there is also a first feature film from Sacramento, born in 1983 and competing for Best Director at the last Oscars.

The film is called Lady Bird and the woman behind it all is Greta Gerwig.

The film is set in Sacramento in 2008 and stars a lively, eccentric and problematic young teenager, but full of dreams and ambitions too big for the provincial mentality of Sacramento.

If you're seeing traces of self-quotation, you're on the right track because LadyBird is essentially a novel of formation starring Greta Gerwig herself.

To make the story exceptional is the actress who embodies Christine, aka Lady Bird, aka Greta Gerwig is an incredible Saorsie Ronan, also deservedly obliterated in the Oscar for the third time despite being only 24 years after her nominations for Atonement and Brooklyn.

For those of you who don't know Ronan, this could be the movie that will never make you forget her again. The New Yorker actress appears sparkling, unabashed but at the same time inwardly fragile and stubborn just like her mother Marion played by an exceptional Laurie Meltclaf here at life's acting test, which earned her a 2018 Oscar nomination, the first of her career.

Just because something looks bad, doesn't mean it's morally wrong.

The mother-daughter relationship will be one of the cornerstones of the whole film, a relationship that not surprisingly opens and closes the film showing us a relationship as complicated as it is loving. A love that does not pass through kisses, cuddles, caresses and permissiveness, but rather is articulated on exchanges that are often hard, severe and unpleasant, but which hide a desire to create a life full of principles and affection, based on an enviable but never rigid education and an acknowledgement of one's own means as a viaticum for the acceptance of oneself and one's role in the world.

And it is precisely here that Christine finds the clash with her mother and the desire to escape from little Sacramento. The young girl has a rebellious spirit that pushes her to refuse to be called by her baptismal name in favor of a chosen name of her own, Lady Bird, which represents both a break with her roots and emancipation as a little woman.

Because if something this film wants to claim is the will, the courage, the determination of strong and dreamy women who, in order to put themselves at stake and self-determination, are willing to put themselves in uncomfortable situations even with the people they love and above all are able to understand the decisive role of those same people.

Lady Bird is not, therefore, "only" a novel of formation but it's also an all-female story that rejects the already seen embracing instead more desecrating and nosy tones. It does so through the protagonist and her story, but looking beyond, looking to the future, looking at the consequences of that choice that lead to maturity first, then emancipation and the realization of one's dreams, culminating in the birth of this film and its success. Yet another quality product that tries to talk about feminism and emancipation by rejecting every cliché, vibrating in the air like a bird, through the eyes of the inimitable Lady Bird.

People quietly accept a name that was given to them by their parents but then are not free to believe in God!?

Tanto cinema d'autore grazie agli stupendi Il Filo Nascosto e Call Me By Your Name, tanta storia con L'Ora Più Buia e The Post, fino ad arrivare allo strano Horror Giallo di Get Out.

  8. Review Film: Lady Bird (2017)@film-trail3029d

Lady Bird proves that Greta Gerwig - in the directing debut - understands and is able to visualize what kind of memory will be the place we love. In Lady Bird, the scene painted the room, covering old streaks (past) with new colours (future), sentimental feel.

Even Sam Levy's cinematography with grainy colour texture looks like a memory renaissance, an impression that is not so prominent when watching a movie on a small laptop screen. Visiting Lady Bird for the second time on the big screen, either visual aspect, pacing, a line of dialogue, emotion or acting, the quality jumped dramatically. About three or four times I was made to tears by the events that had been witnessed before, which confirms two points: 1) There is always something new to be absorbed in a movie, 2) All movies should be watched in a movie theatre, though not a bombastic blockbuster.

Although the movie "just" tells a high school girl from Sacramento named Christine McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) who is not satisfied with his life. He considers Sacramento dull and dreaming of continuing college in New York as "the place where culture is". Although the mother (Laurie Metcalf) strictly forbids the fear of terrorism after the tragedy of 9/11 (the film set in 2002) plus economic factors, the girl does not care. Not only about the place of residence, he was not satisfied with both parents. Feeling his mother always opposed his wish also refused to be escorted to school by the father (Tracy Letts) in shame.

Maybe that's why he insisted on being called Lady Bird. "I give it to myself. It's given to me, by me ", he says. A strange name, but it certainly stands out and sounds special. Lady Bird wants to be all special, including relationships, romance, and sex. Whenever the time, so teenagers especially when high school. Want to be the coolest, cutting-edge, the centre of everything, despite making it selfish and conformist. Lady Bird had kicked her best friend, Julie (Beanie Feldstein), to hang out with Jenna (Odeya Rush), the most popular student in school. Mindset, passion, to how to look at nuns in Catholic high school where he went to school was he changed to fit with Jenna.

Gerwig not only understands memory, as well as teenage behaviour in the search period of identity. That understanding is evident in his semi-autobiographical manuscript. Gerwig was smartly composing a series of intriguing sentences between his moving grooves without ever lingering in a single point, but enough to give the audience time to digest them. A dynamic combination of Gerwig directing and image editing Nick Houy, as well as the emotions and attitudes of his characters that often change quickly, let alone related to the interaction of Lady Bird and her mother. Once upon a time both of them could quarrel about the "way of dragging", then a moment later compact admire the beauty of a dress. Or suddenly jump from a car that was walking after complaining about listening to the song.

Gerwig put great attention to the moment of kinship, devoting all the taste to channel it to the audience. His efforts were successful, certainly without forgetting the services of players, especially Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf. The reason I suggest to visit Lady Bird again on the big screen is one for Ronan's sake. His acting details can be observed thoroughly. The way he shouted, stared in awe, ran, laughed, even just chewing snacks, very enticing, funny, yet authentic. No need at length to describe how great Metcalf is. Simply look at his expression when driving ahead of the end, and try to hold back tears.

  9. Ladybird - Movie Review@coldsteem3140d

    ladybird.PNG

The trailers for Ladybird did not pique my interest. But the rave reviews forced me into the theater to see it. I have to admit, I liked this film a lot more than I expected. However, I think the 100% score at Rotten Tomatoes is ridiculous and the current 8.4 score at IMDb is a bit inflated as well. Having said that, I was not disappointed in this film. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised.

    ladybird2.jpg

Christine "Ladybird" McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) has a strained relationship with her mother, Marion (Laurie Metcalf). Marion works at a psychiatric hospital, often pulling double shifts to help make ends meet. At home, Marion isn't very emotive. She is almost mechanical in her relationships, distracted by an OCD-like obsession with perfection and neatness. This creates a communication gap with Christine, who has her own quirks. Christine attends a Catholic school in Sacramento. Her parents make many sacrifices so that she can get a good education in a safe environment. Christine is coasting toward graduation, trying to make sense of the world around her. She wants to go out of state to college, but the family doesn't have the resources to pay out of state tuition. Especially after her father, Larry (Tracy Letts), loses his job. Christine explores new relationships at the expense of her close relationships as she navigates her own coming-of-age in Sacramento, California in 2002.

    ladybird3.jpg

Ladybird is a character-driven story that serves as a sweetheart kiss to the city of Sacramento. While the city plays a minor role as a backdrop to Christine's teenage angst, it seems to be a place she has greater fondness for than she lets on. The story most deeply explores relationships, examining both friendships and family dynamics. The film has a subtle humor at times, but succeeds more on its dramatic elements and truthful examination of its characters. Ladybird has a distinctly Indie feel, but I find that Indie films often thrive on exploiting the concept of dysfunctional families. It was refreshing to see a film that didn't overplay family dysfunction, opting for a genuine heartbeat. This story is sweet. It is a story of stifled communication. But love manages to be a major theme. And it is done well. The narrative arc is slow at times, weaving the story around Christine's interpersonal interactions. But the ending ties things together satisfactorily. Not neatly. Not in a fairytale Hollywood ending. But in a rewarding sense for the viewer. The film has balance that leaves you feeling warm, without feeling sappy.

    ladybird4.jpg

Ladybird was written and directed by Greta Gerwig. I have an admission to make. I don't like her. She is part of the reason I did not think I would like this film. Gerwig did an excellent job with this film and deserves the accolades that are certain to come her way. She will probably win a ton of sundry awards for this film. There may even be Oscar potential here, based on what Hollywood likes to celebrate. I feel like there was a lot of Greta Gerwig in Christine. Gerwig is from Sacramento, where she attended Catholic school growing up. Like Ladybird, Gerwig attended college in New York and was involved in theater in school, had a mother who was a nurse and a father who was a computer engineer. I will stop just short of calling this Gerwig's autobiography. But I think her honesty in creating this script allowed her to draw inspiration from her own experiences which undoubtedly influenced these characters. The characters were brilliant and engaging, even when the pacing was sluggish. I was impressed.

    ladybird5.jpg

Ronan and Metcalf carried this film. While the film explored many relationships, the central focus was on the relationship between Christine and her mother. There was an unbalanced chemistry between these two actors that gave their performances credibility. Metcalf came across as caring, but cold. It was an odd balance that is a tribute to her talent. Ronan gave us a character who was likeable in spite of bad decisions. Her decisions weren't life altering as much as just irritating. But she infused her character with a calm objectiveness that seemed to create balance. Together, Ronan and Metcalf danced between warmth and distance in a way that only family relationships can maneuver. I was sold on their performances. The film was well constructed, allowing the talent of these two to shine.

    ladybird6.png

Ladybird runs 94 minutes. It feels longer than that due to some pacing issues. Although the story is worth the pacing. The film probably would have earned a PG-13 rating, but for one scene where Christine purchases a Playgirl magazine, giving the audience a dose of male full frontal nudity. It was a bit gratuitous, but was part of Christine's personal birthday celebration. She bought several items she was previously not old enough to purchase. I think this scene was included because it really happened. To Gerwig. Aside from that, the film had teenage drinking, strong language and a nudity free sex scene. There was also talk about sex and sexuality. Overall, this film is probably best for a teenage audience or older. The brief flash of nudity notwithstanding, the subject matter is geared toward older audiences.

There was nothing about Ladybird that suggests it has to be seen on the big screen. It will translate well to television if you want to wait for it. Having said that, I would make a note to add this to your streaming queue once it hits the streaming services. It is a worthwhile, rewarding film. While I complained about the pacing a bit, the story was sweet. It was a different kind of independent film that leaves you feeling warm instead of feeling empty. Or worse, feeling like "what did I just watch?" The characters and acting make this film work. The characters felt like people I know. Genuine people without their public facade. I'm not quite in RT or IMDb stratosphere...but I have talked myself into an 8/10 rating.
