Let's talk about the film! Toda una vida en un año tells the story of a 17 year old boy named Daryn who has been a very recognized student for his outstanding academic performance, so, he has given everything to make his father feel super proud of him, although, as we watch the film we will realize that being a recognized boy was not Daryn's main goal, this made me think about how sometimes we tend to placate our dreams because maybe we want to make certain people feel good, I reflected a lot about it. Now, while this guy continued his routine, he bumps into the life of Isabelle, who is a young woman who is characterized by being super cool, crazy, and who will undoubtedly make Daryn make the best decision.

For this reason, Isabelle manages to see in Daryn a talent that he despised in a certain way, which was rapping, from this moment we will see how both enjoy a friendship hidden from the boy's parents and Isa supports him to achieve that dream that was buried. However, in one of the scenes Daryn learns of Isa's illness, which makes him decide to leave aside his father's whims and give him the best year of his life. The denouement of the whole production is a seesaw of emotions, it will make you happy at times, but then, a sea of tears will run down your face. That being said, the leads were great with their acting, I loved every scene and enjoyed it to the fullest, they are a pro. Jaden's performance was definitely the best.

I must emphasize that I can consider this movie as the kind of film that touches the heart and makes you reflect so much that you just want to enjoy every day to the fullest, besides thinking that we are very blessed to be healthy and have a family. I share with you a phrase that stuck with me said by Isabelle (Cara Delevigne)"Everyone thinks that dying teaches you something about life, but they're wrong. You only learn to live by living and I've learned that every moment is your moment. Sometimes they're nice moments, sometimes they're beautiful, scary or just plain weird. But they all belong to you. Living is not easy, but if you manage to overcome your fears and everyone's expectations the reward will be your life"

This is a romantic production without a happy ending directed by Mitja Okorn, known for the Polish feature Letters to Santa, from a screenplay by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews.

The plot centers on the relationship between teenagers Daryn, played by Jaden Smith, son of the well-known actor and rapper Will Smith, who in 2010 starred in a remake of Karate Kid, and Isabelle, played by British model and actress Cara Delevingne, who starred in the film version of Nicholas Spark's novel "Paper Towns".

    image.png Image

This relationship begins after meeting by chance at a Rap concert, where they were both trying to sneak in and he is taken by her personality.

But there is a detail, both are from different social strata and Daryn is being prepared by his father Xavier, played by Cuba Gooding Jr. to enter Harvard University and this makes it difficult for it to be accepted.

    image.png Image

As if that were not enough there is a condition that prevents her from accepting him and that is that the girl has terminal cancer and a maximum of one year to live, something he accepts and makes a plan to live that year happily and together, this against the wishes of his father.

During this time she manages to make him understand that his hobby is in music, specifically in the rap genre and manages to make him record a demo with a friend.

    image.png Image

The story becomes at times boring or very predictable and loses its initial strength, but maintains the drama in which two young people fight for a love doomed to the end for health reasons.

Executive produced by Jaden's parents, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith through their company Overbrook Entertainment, the film was released on November 27, 2020 by Amazon Studios and grossed approximately 43 million.

The reviews were mixed, some consider it too basic and with unnecessary scenes while others think the love story is well plotted.

Personally I agree with the former but it does the job of entertaining.

  3. Life In A Year (Movie Review)@wolfofnostreet1946d

Hold your popcorn handkerchiefs because this movie is going to get you very teary.

    images 42.jpeg

In this 2020 romantic movie, Jaden Smith plays the role of Daryn a 17 year old student who's trying to work his way into Harvard much to his father's (Cuba Goodling Jr.) delight. He's a typical good kid that pleases his strict parent but gets cut some slack sometimes thanks to his mum Catherine (Nia Long).

One night he gets permission to go to a rap concert and while trying to sneak in with his friends, he meets Isabelle (Cara Delevingne) who he finds very intriguing. He tracks her at the diner she works and tries to befriend her but she proves to be uptight.

Eventually she gives him a chance and goes on a date with him and Daryn tries impressing her arriving in a car and dressing up, none of which thrills her. They develop a beautiful friendship and she makes him realize what he really wants out of life - to pursue his dreams of a rap career and not the Harvard dream his father wants so bad for him.

Isabelle becomes withdrawn when Daryn confesses he's in love with her which leaves him very confused. He gets to find out she has cancer and just a year to live 😥

Fueled by love, Daryn promises to make her last year worth it. They both live a whole life in a year, doing all the things they want, having fun and even get married eventually. A few days after the wedding, Isabelle dies.

I really like this movie and was impressed by Jaden Smith's performance. It's the first movie I've seen of his as a grown guy and he delivered well. The connection with his co-star felt real and they portrayed the story excellently.

The way both lovers influence each other within a short while is very admirable and Daryn's love was as pure as water, no way you wouldn't cry during the emotional/romantic scenes.

Although the young couple were a good match, Cuba Goodling Jr. and Nia Long didn't quite seem like a good match as Daryn's parents, there was zero connection for me.

I would watch this movie again because I really enjoyed it but I'm not ready for the migraine that comes with the tears so I'm good.

    My Rating - 8.5/10

Minus 1.5 for Cuba Goodling Jr. not portraying the father role well enough.
