  2. Limitless (Film): Review.@martinmcfly2795d

In Charly, a film that Ralph Nelson directed in 1968, adapting the excellent novel Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, a premise of science fiction (a man with mental retardation progressed in his IQ by means of a drug experiment) was the excuse to psychoanalyze the society of those years of hippism, LSD, feminism and liberal movements. Limitless is also a new proposal that tries to do the same with the present society.

Year: 2011 Category: Science Fiction, Thriller. Director: Neil Burger. Cast: Bradley Cooper, Abbie Cornish, Robert De Niro, Andrew Howard, Anna Friel.

    Plot

Aspiring writer Eddie Morra suffers from chronic stagnation, but his life takes a turn as soon as an old friend introduces him to the NZT, a revolutionary medication that allows him to fully exploit his potential. With every nervous impulse, Eddie can remember absolutely everything he has read, seen or heard, learn any language in a day, understand complex equations and enchant everyone he meets. as long as he continues taking the experimental drug.

    Opinion

The film is based on that erroneous but widespread belief that we do not use the full potential of our brain. This point of departure, almost ridiculous, can make you feel a prior rejection towards the film. It will be necessary to leave aside that preventions to enjoy the film that is not intended to be more than entertainment. Fortunately, this belief is only used as a trigger for the action and not as a theoretical basis to launch messages or as a proclamation of a reality.

It is not surprising that Bradley Cooper is the executive producer of the film, because his role is overwhelming, his presence is constant. This results in a product that seems designed for its promotion as an actor, to allow it to take a step towards the leading roles. The idea could be an excuse to compose a catalog of his interpretive records and a representation that he can do a good job, because history requires numerous transformations to the protagonist. Cooper does his job very well by showing the changes in appearance and his passage through the different states of addiction are always credible. De Niro is on autopilot the whole movie, that is, the classic to which he has accustomed us without much effort, except for one scene, in which he lets us see his acting level.

In general, the film is very entertaining, it relies on charismatic personalities and offers occasional features of intelligence, although it is also irregular enough in its development to not provoke enthusiasm in the viewer. It has the elements that it must have, without an extraordinary exaggeration. The spectator in this case will not be disappointed. You can not see Limitless with the idea of finding what is usually called a masterpiece, but with the intention of enjoying a good time.

I do not know if looking for an ideological background to the story would presuppose too much of the authors. The fact is that he manages to touch the ego to some of us and so we project ourselves immediately into the winner and join the euphoria of his rise.

In conclusion, there are not too many things to say without mentioning spoilers, Limitless can be considered a fun film. It's not a movie that's going to change the story, and I guess we will not even remember it a few weeks after we've seen it. But, if you do not analyze too much the plot and the scientific and ideological issues, you can spend an entertaining time.

    Score

    6/10

Limitless is the kind of movie to watch when you have nothing to do, then you can kill time for 1 hour and 45 minutes. You will not remember it as an excellent work, you could not even say that interesting, I think the best adjective for this movie, although simple, would be entertaining.

  3. "Limitless" by Neil Burger - movie review@godflesh2947d

    91F-MOXhgLL.SL1500.jpg

Brilliant. Rich. Mighty. Become the perfect version of yourself with just one pill. NZT gives your brain the ability to work at 100%. If there is someone who has never dreamed of being cleverer in his life - or if it sounds a little rude - to remember everything he has ever read, heard, or seen, he is capable of dealing with anyone a problem faced by him, whether of a scientific, economic or cultural nature, that he can only lift a hand from a conversation to learn a foreign language or reveal the secrets of the universe. Eddie Mora (Bradley Cooper) is an inconspicuous, irresponsible writer suffering from chronic blocking, whose live change for hours when his ex-wife's brother presents him with NZT, a mysterious pill that allows people to use their full mental and physical potential . With his help, Eddie turns from an unknown slimmer into a brilliant, prosperous figure in the financial world that draws the attention of the biggest names in the industry. The problem is that it attracts the attention of people who will not stop at anything to deprive him of both his pills and his life. On top of that, NZT starts to produce unpleasant side effects.

Overall, "Limitless" is a movie with great potential. The subject is interesting and raises dozens of interesting questions. The problem is, as in many cases lately, none of these options has been developed. And where everything is over-evident and there is absolutely no need for an effort to achieve a qualitative effect - such as drug abuse and drug-taking - things are simply thrown out. So, instead of a mysterious, intelligent and deep film, we get a simple thriller with chases and a cat and mouse game that has no higher goal than entertaining and whose obligatory "surprising" finish is simply disappointing.

Still, the film is pretty fun and entertaining, and most importantly, it does not make any sense at all. Visually, it looks good, there are some pretty good solutions to the effect of the pill, which personally likes to be a speeding movement using Google Street View. Actor's performances are good, Bradley Cooper has long demonstrated his charm and here he is believable (although he feels too good to play that role that would be more appropriate to someone else) and Robert de Niro, who, as you know, are more exposed lately, although there is not much to do, makes one of his good roles. Abby Cornish is a bit "misused" (not to feel unnecessary have given her a totally unnecessary chase in the park), but it is not such a pain for dying. It is a pity that the authors of "Limitless" have wiped out a nice opportunity for something really good, but despite its shortcomings, the film, as I said, is fresh, pleasant and entertaining and I give it an entirely positive assessment. And something else. That people use only 10-15% of their brains is a myth. Just to be aware.

  4. Limitless - Movie Review@coldsteem3239d

    IMG_1278.JPG

What if you had access to the eighty percent of your brain that goes "unused?" That is the concept behind the 2011 film Limitless. An experimental drug (NZT) provides mental clarity, allowing your synapses to fire at an incredible rate, connecting even the remotest of memories into an organized set of memories. Patterns become clearer, your focus is acute and your abilities become, well...limitless.

    IMG_1277.JPG

The bad news? The drug only lasts twenty-four hours per dose. More bad news? There isn't any more of the drug. If that weren't enough, there is also the issue of side effects. The vomiting and nausea might be tolerable. But the tumors and death are kind of final. When Eddie Morra (Bradley Cooper) is introduced to NZT, it changes his life. After cleaning his bachelor pad, he turns to his unfinished book (or, more accurately, his unstarted book). He finishes the entire work in four days. Morra stumbles on the stash of NZT that his former brother-in-law hid beneath his stove before he was murdered. It seems that NZT is worth killing for, because bodies start dropping from the outset.

    IMG_1275.JPG

Morra carefully guards his NZT stash while rekindling his relationship with his former girlfriend Lindy (Abbie Cornish) and staking out his future in the stock market. His market prowess leads him into the fold of super-broker Carl Van Loon (Robert De Niro) who is impressed with Morra's incredible ability to find nuance in the markets. The relationship is predatory, with Van Loon using his young protege to broker his biggest deals. In the meantime, Morra must deal with a ruthless tail that has been following him, searching for his stash of NZT. He must also deal with a murder investigation (two actually), a pending merger and an underworld enforcer who has discovered the benefits of NZT.

Limitless is unique in many ways. The film creates limitations within the realm of unlimited abilities in order to create great suspense. However, there were some plot issues that bothered me. Among them were the side effects that initially affected our central character but then miraculously went away. While the feat might be explainable within the realm of possibilities created by the drug, it is never actually explored. That left me feeling that the writers took the easy way out to create a somewhat open ending (and possibly a sequel). The characters were interesting and engaging. I actually cared about the main character and some of the peple around him. The dialogue was rich and seemed well researched. Leslie Dixon (screenplay) and Alan Glynn (novel) have given us some solid meat to gnaw on.

    IMG_1276.JPG

I don't know if the lead role could have been cast any better than Cooper. His glass stare (probably enhanced by special effects) conveys the clarity extended by the NZT with conviction. Cooper made the transition from struggling writer to accomplished broker to Senatorial candidate with credibility. I believed the transition. De Niro was typical De Niro. Straight forward, deliberate and an incredible stage presence. I am not famliar with Cornish, who had a minor role, but I liked what I saw. The cast was strong.

I enjoyed Limitless. It was an intriguing thriller in a long list of thrillers that arrived in 2011. 2011 seemed to be the year of the thriller. I would rank this one up there with Unknown, The Adjustment Bureau, Source Code, along with 2010's Inception. It was a great year for the genre. Limitless did have some issues in the plot, primarily with the lack of explanation regarding continuity of the drug side effects. With that said, the dialogue was brilliant, the performances convincing and the concept fresh. I was entertained the entire film. Worthy of 8/10. If you haven't seen it, rent it.
