A few days ago I was able to see Carlos Vermut's most recent film, which I had not been able to enjoy before the Goya awards. Now I fully agree with all those who recommended it and it is another great production in an incredible past year for Spanish cinema.
Hace unos días pude ver la más reciente película de Carlos Vermut, que no había podido disfrutar antes de la entrega de los premios Goya. Ahora coincido plenamente con todos los que la recomendaron y es otra gran producción en un año que fue increíble para el cine español.
What are monsters like? Are they just imagination? fantasy? or are they real? When we hear the word monster, we immediately imagine horrifying creatures. Some with human morphology, others with the appearance of some existing or extinct animal, with ugliness, appearance that instills fear and we feel the danger. This is how they have been represented for centuries in any artistic expression.
All these images of monstrous beings, always seek to represent evil, the most terrifying. While the reality is very different. The monsters that walk among us have a normal appearance, some can be charming. They go unnoticed on many occasions, forget about detecting them, many use good camouflage and are only discovered when they have already caused a lot of destruction.
"I dreamed of being a tiger" says the character Julian in one of the scenes of the movie. At that moment his subconscious makes him show himself for what he is, that creature from Greek mythology that represents evil in its pure state, with a feline body and a human face, a Manticore. A predator who is aware of his own nature and who strives to fight against his own darkness.
The inner struggle, a hard war against the monstrous instincts that the protagonist faces. Can a monster bury what is innate in him? Can he appease his suffering? Wait a minute... Can a monster suffer? Feel pain? Feel needs? Of course, not all are psychopaths incapable of feeling. Some have a sense of their own nature, they know the difference between good and evil, and even if they wish with all their might to follow that first path, the dark demons of their mind will eventually drag them to commit the most disgusting acts.
Manticores are everywhere, like the one in the movie and others who are also creatures that seek to lull their prey to sleep and then devour them. Distrust towards everyone is something that is part of me, although sometimes I betray myself and let myself be carried away by the words of the manticores that cross my path. They are skillful, they know how to gain trust, they are expert predators who seek to achieve their goals and nothing more. They are everywhere, with a pleasant appearance, waiting for your carelessness to stick you with their scorpion tails. What these creatures don't know is that some of us are patient and will wait as long as it takes, until the perfect time comes to cut off their heads.
¿Cómo son los monstruos? ¿Son sólo imaginación? ¿Fantasía? o ¿son reales? Cuando oímos la palabra monstruo, inmediatamente imaginamos criaturas horripilantes. Algunas con morfología humana, otras con aspecto de algún animal existente o extinguido, con fealdad, apariencia que infunde miedo y sentimos el peligro. Así se han representado durante siglos en cualquier expresión artística.
Todas estas imágenes de seres monstruosos, buscan siempre representar el mal, lo más terrorífico. Mientras que la realidad es muy diferente. Los monstruos que caminan entre nosotros tienen una apariencia normal, algunos pueden ser encantadores. Pasan desapercibidos en muchas ocasiones, olvídate de detectarlos, muchos utilizan un buen camuflaje y sólo son descubiertos cuando ya han causado mucha destrucción.
"Soñaba con ser un tigre" dice el personaje Julián en una de las escenas de la película. En ese momento su subconsciente le hace mostrarse como lo que es, esa criatura de la mitología griega que representa el mal en estado puro, con cuerpo felino y rostro humano, un Manticora. Un depredador que es consciente de su propia naturaleza y que se esfuerza por luchar contra su propia oscuridad.
La lucha interior, una dura guerra contra los instintos monstruosos a la que se enfrenta el protagonista. ¿Puede un monstruo enterrar lo que es innato en él? ¿Puede apaciguar su sufrimiento? Un momento... ¿Puede un monstruo sufrir? ¿Sentir dolor? ¿Necesidades? Por supuesto, no todos son psicópatas incapaces de sentir. Algunos tienen sentido de su propia naturaleza, conocen la diferencia entre el bien y el mal, y aunque deseen con todas sus fuerzas seguir ese primer camino, los oscuros demonios de su mente acabarán arrastrándoles a cometer los actos más repugnantes.
Los Mantícoras están por todas partes, como el de la película y otros que también son criaturas que buscan adormecer a sus presas para luego devorarlas. La desconfianza hacia todos es algo que forma parte de mí, aunque a veces me traiciono y me dejo llevar por las palabras de las mantícoras que se cruzan en mi camino. Son hábiles, saben ganarse la confianza, son expertas depredadoras que buscan alcanzar sus objetivos y nada más. Están por todas partes, con una apariencia agradable, esperando a que te descuides para clavarte sus colas de escorpión. Lo que estas criaturas no saben es que algunas de nosotros somos pacientes y esperaremos todo lo que haga falta, hasta que llegue el momento perfecto para cortarles la cabeza.
It is difficult to feel empathy for a character like Julian, when we discover the worst of his humanity, that dark secret, we will only feel repulsion. The ugly and terrifying creatures he designs for the video game company he works for will seem harmless when we see his hidden side. Will we feel pity? What he does, even in his imagination, is so aberrant that even pity is hard to feel.
I think only at the beginning, as we see his day to day life, his shyness, his inability to be more sociable and even to have a little affair with a girl, will be the brief moments when we can feel sorry for Julian, because the revelation happens fast and our perception will change radically. A scene in which without showing absolutely nothing, it is disturbing, uncomfortable. But this will not be the only scene that will shake us from the couch.
There is a long sequence that made me feel several unpleasant sensations. What no extreme horror film has ever managed to do to me, this film, which is more of a psychological thriller, does. It is the most uncomfortable sequence in the film, the one that many viewers are going to wish would end, that something would happen to stop Julian from continuing with his aberrant plan. We will see the Manticore in all its splendor, the molding monster being the real monster and perhaps there is the possibility that its own reflection, through a drawing, will be able to destroy it and give the viewer a moment of peace.
The peace Julian needs, his need to feel loved, to find someone who will make his disgusting fantasies, stay there, in the dark world of his sick mind. Diana seems the perfect girl for him, both because of her looks and her fragility. She is kind and has a real attraction to Julian. She has sadness, some family burdens can be mu and hard. She shines her light in the darkness of the protagonist, who seems willing to lock his secret in a trunk. will it be enough? Everyone on the side of evil ends up making a mistake.
I love the filmmaker Carlos Vermut, he has made few films, but he is growing with time, each time a better proposal. I remember he blew my mind with Diamon Flash. He captivated me with Magical Girl, where he made me fall in love with Bárbara Lennie and moved me with Quien te Cantara, with phenomenal Najwa Nimri and Eva Llorach. I recommend all of them, if you dare to see Manticore and you like it, you should look for his previous films and enjoy his evolution as a filmmaker.
Es difícil sentir empatía por un personaje como Julian, cuando descubramos lo peor de su humanidad, ese oscuro secreto, sólo sentiremos repulsión. Las feas y aterradoras criaturas que diseña para la empresa de videojuegos en la que trabaja nos parecerán inofensivas cuando veamos su lado oculto. ¿Sentiremos lástima? Lo que hace, incluso en su imaginación, es tan aberrante que hasta la lástima es difícil de sentir.
Creo que sólo al principio, mientras vemos su día a día, su timidez, su incapacidad para ser más sociable e incluso para tener un pequeño affaire con una chica, serán los breves momentos en los que podamos sentir lástima por Julián, porque la revelación sucede rápido y nuestra percepción cambiará radicalmente. Una escena en la que sin mostrar absolutamente nada, resulta inquietante, incómoda. Pero esta no será la única escena que nos removerá del sofá.
Hay una larga secuencia que me hizo sentir diversas sensaciones desagradables. Lo que ninguna película de terror extremo ha conseguido hacerme, esta película que es más un thriller psicológico lo consigue. Es la secuencia más incómoda de la película, la que muchos espectadores van a desear que termine, que ocurra algo que impida a Julian continuar con su aberrante plan. Veremos a la Mantícora en todo su esplendor, al monstruo moldeador siendo el verdadero monstruo y quizás exista la posibilidad de que su propio reflejo, a través de un dibujo, sea capaz de destruirlo y dar al espectador un momento de paz.
La paz que Julian necesita, su necesidad de sentirse amado, de encontrar a alguien que haga que sus repugnantes fantasías, se queden ahí, en el oscuro mundo de su mente enferma. Diana parece la chica perfecta para él, tanto por su aspecto como por su fragilidad. Es amable y siente una verdadera atracción por Julian. Ella tiene tristeza, algunas cargas familiares pueden ser mu y duras. Ella hace brillar su luz en la oscuridad del protagonista, que parece dispuesto a encerrar su secreto en un baúl. ¿será suficiente? Todos los que están del lado del mal acaban cometiendo un error.
Me encanta el cineasta Carlos Vermut, ha rodado pocas películas, pero va creciendo con el tiempo, cada vez una propuesta mejor. Recuerdo que me hizo alucinar con Diamon Flash. Me cautivó con Magical Girl , dond ehizo que me enamorara de Bárbara Lennie y me emocionó con Quien te Cantara, con unas fenomenales Najwa Nimri y Eva Llorach. Te las recomiendo todas, si te animas a ver Manticore y te gusta, deberías buscar sus anteriores películas y disfrutar de su evolución como cineasta.
Nacho Sanchez and Zoe Stein play the two main characters of the story, reflecting again the good work in the direction of actors and where both show the greatest possible talent. Of course Nacho Sanchez, is the one who occupies more screen time and also his character has more complexity. A difficult character to build, a challenge for any young actor. After watching the film, I firmly believe that he deserved to win the Goya for best actor, but he had to compete with the French actor Denis Ménochet. I liked the Frenchman's work in As Bestas, but I would have given it to Sánchez. He didn't go empty-handed last awards season, though, as he was the deserved winner at the Feroz awards.
Zoe Stein was nominated for best new actress, but it was a very close category, with very good performances, and it was won by Laura Galán for the slasher set in deep Spain Cerdita. I have yet to see her in the series La chica invisible. Zoe stands out with her character, bringing that ray of light that the protagonist and monster of the story needs.
I think Manticore deserved a higher number of nominations. It only had four, but in my personal top, it occupies the first place next to As Bestas of the best Spanish productions of last year. Others may think differently, but I am a big fan of the two filmmakers of these films.
Manticore shows us the true face of evil and will make you uncomfortable. A film about the inner struggle of a kindly looking monster, with a masterful sequence that will almost make us scream Enough! I recommend it.

Nacho Sánchez y Zoe Stein interpretan a los dos personajes principales de la historia, reflejando de nuevo el buen trabajo en la dirección de actores y donde ambos demuestran el mayor talento posible. Por supuesto Nacho Sánchez, es el que ocupa más tiempo en pantalla y además su personaje tiene más complejidad. Un personaje difícil de construir, todo un reto para cualquier joven actor. Después de ver la película, creo firmemente que merecía ganar el Goya al mejor actor, pero le toco competir con el actor francés Denis Ménochet. Me gustó el trabajo del francés en As Bestas, pero yo se lo hubiera dado a Sánchez. Aunque no se quedó con las manos vacías en la última temporada de premios, ya que fue el merecido ganador en los premios Feroz.
Zoe Stein estaba nominada a mejor actriz revelación, pero era una categoría muy reñida, con muy buenas interpretaciones, y la ganó Laura Galán por el slasher ambientado en la España profunda Cerdita. Tengo pendiente verla en la serie La chica invisible. Zoe sobresale con su personaje, aportando ese rayo de luz que necesita el protagonista y monstruo de la historia.
Creo que Mantícora merecía un mayor número de nominaciones. Sólo tuvo cuatro, pero en mi top personal, ocupa el primer puesto junto a As Bestas de las mejores producciones españolas del año pasado. Puede que otros piensen diferente, pero yo soy un gran fan de los dos cineastas de estas películas.
Manticora nos muestra la verdadera cara del mal y te hará sentir incómodo. Una película sobre la lucha interior de un monstruos de aspecto amable, con una magistral secuencia que casi nos hará gritar ¡Basta! La recomiendo.
