Hello everyone, my friends and fans of good stories! This time, I'm going to talk about a super interesting movie, I'm going to talk about Memory. Seriously, if you're only going to see one movie this month, it HAS to be this one. It's one of those films that sticks with you, but in the coolest way possible. Right from the start, it drops a question on you that leaves you thinking for a good while: What hurts more? To forget or to remember? I mean, with just that, you already have enough for a deep 3 a.m. conversation, right? Is it worse to carry that horrible memory that marked you forever, or the anguish of not recognizing the person you love, of having your own life erased? The movie doesn't just ask and leave it at that, no, it grabs you and throws you headfirst into experiencing it. The director is Michel Franco, and I know, I know… for many, he's one of those filmmakers you either love or just can't stand. To be honest, sometimes I like his work and sometimes not so much, but let me tell you something: with Memory, wow! I feel like he finally nailed it. He took that indie film sensibility he has, mixed it into this US-Mexico co-production with Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard, and created what is, for me, easily his best film to date. It feels like he set aside that sometimes pretentious vibe he gets criticized for and just focused on telling a profoundly human story. So, what's it about?
The story revolves around Silvia, played by the incredible Jessica Chastain. She's a social worker, a single mom, and has a super controlled, super simple life: her daughter, her job, and her Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. She's been sober for over ten years and is a lioness with her daughter, protecting their little bubble from the ghosts of her past. One night, after a high school reunion, she notices a guy following her home. The guy just stands there outside all night. Super weird, it really freaks you out. But the next day, when they cross paths and start talking, that encounter becomes the spark that forces them both to confront their pasts, to open doors that had been locked tight for years. The man is Saul, played by a brilliant Peter Sarsgaard, and it turns out he's dealing with early-onset dementia. He doesn't even remember following her. That's where the movie hits you: on one hand, you have Silvia, tormented by memories she would kill to forget, and on the other, Saul, terrified by the memories he can no longer hold onto.
Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos de las buenas historias, en esta ocasión, les voy a hablar de una película súper interesante, les hablaré de Memory.. en serio, si este mes solo van a ver una película, TIENE que ser esta.. es de esas que se te clavan, pero de la forma más chida posible, de entrada, te suelta una pregunta que te deja pensando un buen rato: ¿Qué duele más? ¿Olvidar o recordar? O sea, solo con eso ya tienes para una plática profunda a las tres de la mañana, ¿no? ¿Es peor cargar con ese recuerdo horrible que te marcó para siempre, o la angustia de no reconocer a la persona que amas, de que se te borre tu propia vida? La película no te lo pregunta y ya, no, te agarra y te avienta de cabeza a vivirlo.. el director es Michel Franco, y yo sé, yo sé… para muchos es de esos cineastas que o amas o de plano no soportas.. a mí mismo, la verdad, a veces me gusta y a veces no tanto, pero déjenme decirles algo: con Memory, ¡wow!, siento que por fin dio en el clavo.. agarró esa sensibilidad de cine independiente que tiene, la mezcló en esta producción entre México y Estados Unidos con Jessica Chastain y Peter Sarsgaard, y creó lo que, para mí, fácil es su mejor película hasta ahora.. se siente como si hubiera dejado de lado esa onda a veces medio pretenciosa que le critican y nomás se enfocó en contar una historia profundamente humana.. entonces, ¿de qué va la cosa?
La historia gira en torno a Silvia, que la interpreta la increíble Jessica Chastain, ella es trabajadora social, mamá soltera y tiene una vida súper controlada, súper simple: su hija, su trabajo y sus reuniones de Alcohólicos Anónimos. Lleva más de diez años sobria y es una leona con su hija, protegiendo su pequeña burbuja de los fantasmas de su pasado.. una noche, después de una reunión con excompañeros de la escuela, se da cuenta de que un tipo la sigue hasta su casa. El tipo nomás se queda ahí parado afuera toda la noche. Súper raro, te saca de onda.. pero al día siguiente, cuando se cruzan y empiezan a hablar, ese encuentro se vuelve el chispazo que los obliga a los dos a enfrentar sus pasados, a abrir puertas que llevaban años cerradas con candado.. el hombre es Saúl, interpretado por un genial Peter Sarsgaard, y resulta que está lidiando con demencia temprana. Él ni se acuerda de haberla seguido.. ahí es donde la película te golpea: tienes por un lado a Silvia, atormentada por recuerdos que mataría por olvidar, y por el otro a Saúl, aterrorizado por los recuerdos que ya no puede guardar.
And here, people, is where the movie becomes an absolute acting masterclass. I'm not kidding, watching Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard together on screen is brutal, it's stunning. We already know Jessica Chastain is a beast of an actress; she has this incredible ability to convey a ton of emotions with just a look, and she perfectly nails this woman who built herself armor, a tough exterior that barely contains a lifetime of torment about to explode. But Peter Sarsgaard… my God. What he does in this movie is out of this world. He won the Best Actor award at the Venice Film Festival for this role, and I swear, ten minutes into the movie, you understand why. He was given a super complicated character and he plays him with a confidence and delicacy that will leave you speechless.
It's one of those rare performances where you forget you're watching an actor; you feel like you're watching a real person, a man dealing with this terrible illness, filled with a quiet confusion and a fear of hurting someone. The vulnerability in his gaze, in the way he moves… truly, it's unforgettable. Seriously, I don't think I'll forget his character for a long, long time. And what makes their performances hit even harder is Franco's directing style. The film has this play-like vibe. It uses very few locations, and the camera is almost always still; don't expect spectacular camera movements or editing that will blow your mind. What he does is set the stage and let the actors work their magic, forcing you to focus completely on them: on what they say and, more importantly, on what they don't say. The silences, the glances, the small changes in their body language... that's where the real story is told. It's a super risky bet that pays off beautifully, and it shows you that you don't need much visual flair when you have this much trust in your actors and your script.
Y aquí, gente, es donde la película se convierte en una absoluta locura de actuación.. no les miento, ver a Jessica Chastain y a Peter Sarsgaard juntos en pantalla es brutal, es impresionante.. ya sabemos que Jessica Chastain es un monstruo de actriz; tiene esa capacidad increíble de transmitirte un montón de emociones con solo una mirada, clava perfecto a esta mujer que se construyó una coraza, un exterior durísimo que apenas contiene un tormento de toda la vida que está a punto de explotar. Pero Peter Sarsgaard… Dios mío. Lo que hace en esta película es de otro planeta.. se ganó el premio a Mejor Actor en el Festival de Venecia por este papel, y les juro que a los diez minutos de película ya entiendes por qué.. le tocó un personaje súper complicado y lo interpreta con una seguridad y una delicadeza que te dejan con la boca abierta.
Es de esas raras actuaciones en las que se te olvida que estás viendo a un actor, sientes que estás viendo a una persona real, a un hombre lidiando con esta enfermedad terrible, lleno de una confusión tranquila y con un miedo a lastimar a alguien, la vulnerabilidad que tiene en la mirada, en cómo se mueve… de verdad, es inolvidable. En serio, creo que no voy a olvidar a su personaje en mucho, mucho tiempo. Y lo que hace que sus actuaciones peguen todavía más fuerte es el estilo de dirección de Franco.. la película tiene esta vibra como de obra de teatro. Usa muy poquitos lugares y la cámara casi siempre está quieta, no esperen movimientos de cámara espectaculares ni una edición que los vuelva locos. Lo que hace él es poner el escenario y dejar que los actores hagan su magia, te obliga a que te claves completamente en ellos: en lo que dicen y, más importante, en lo que no dicen.. los silencios, las miradas, los pequeños cambios en su cuerpo... ahí es donde se cuenta la verdadera historia.. es una apuesta súper arriesgada que le sale de maravilla, y te demuestra que no necesitas tanto show visual cuando confías así en tus actores y en el guion que tienes.
And the emotional journey this movie puts you on… uff. I'm telling you right now, get ready because it might just make you cry. It’s one of those films that breaks your heart into a million pieces, but then, very lovingly, puts it back together. It's an emotional rollercoaster, but even in its darkest moments, it never leaves you with that feeling that all hope is lost. You know how some dramas love to drag you through the mud and just leave you there? But Memory, despite all the pain, ultimately feels like a warm hug, a really tight embrace. I left the theater with a strange feeling, one of warmth and hope, a sense that even when life gets really tough, you can still find beautiful things and cool connections. The chemistry between Silvia and Saúl is the heart of it all. As they spend time together, they build this super healthy friendship, where they take care of each other. And this isn't your typical American movie romance, okay? It's something much more fragile, more real. Their relationship feels so natural, so honest, you believe every second of it. The way they learn to deal with each other's broken parts is the soul of the film. The moments of silence between them, when they just look at each other, are more romantic and powerful than any grand declaration of love. Now, I'm going to be super honest with you: the movie is slow, especially the first 30 minutes.
It takes its time to introduce you to the world and the characters, and I imagine some people might get a little impatient. But I swear it's worth it, just hang in there, because once the connection between Silvia and Saúl clicks, the movie grabs you and doesn't let go. You get so invested in their journey that you forget everything else. For me, this film is a powerful reminder not to judge people, to have more empathy, because you truly never know the struggles everyone is carrying inside. It's about how two broken people can find a way to heal, not by "fixing" each other, but just by being there, by accepting each other. I give Memory an 8/10. It might not be a masterpiece of cinematography or editing, but the strength of the script and, above all, the MONUMENTAL performances by Chastain and Sarsgaard make it something truly special, one of those you won't forget. And look, I'm even going to give you a piece of advice I rarely give: if you can, try to watch this movie alone. Of course, it's cool to watch it with someone, but I think experiencing it by yourself is very powerful. It gives you a chance to think on the way home, to let the emotions sink in, and to draw your own conclusions. Y el viaje emocional que te pega esta película… uff. De una vez les digo, prepárense porque chance y les saca una lágrima.. es de esas que te rompen el corazón en mil pedazos, pero después, con mucho cariño, te lo vuelve a armar. Es una montaña rusa de emociones, pero incluso en sus momentos más oscuros, nunca te deja con esa sensación de que ya todo valió, hay muchos dramas a los que les encanta arrastrarte por el lodo y ahí te abandonan, ¿saben? Pero Memory, con todo y lo que duele, al final se siente como un apapacho, como un abrazo bien fuerte.. yo salí del cine con una sensación bien rara, como de calidez y esperanza, de que incluso cuando la vida se pone bien perra, todavía puedes encontrar cosas hermosas y conexiones chidas.. la química entre Silvia y Saúl es el corazón de todo. Conforme van pasando tiempo juntos, construyen esta amistad súper sana, donde se cuidan el uno al otro. Y no es el típico romance de película gringa, ¿eh? Es algo mucho más frágil, más real. Su relación se siente tan natural, tan honesta, que te crees cada segundo, la forma en la que aprenden a lidiar con las partes rotas del otro es el alma de la película. Los momentos de silencio entre ellos, cuando nomás se ven, son más románticos y potentes que cualquier gran discurso de amor.. ahora, les voy a ser súper honesto: la película es lenta, sobre todo los primeros 30 minutos.
Se toma su tiempo para presentarte el mundo y los personajes, y me imagino que algunos se pueden desesperar un poco.. pero les juro que vale la pena, aguanten vara, porque una vez que la conexión entre Silvia y Saúl hace clic, la película te agarra y ya no te suelta. Te metes tanto en su viaje que se te olvida todo lo demás. Para mí, esta película es un recordatorio bien fuerte de que no hay que juzgar a la gente, de tener más empatía, porque la verdad uno nunca sabe las broncas que cada quien trae por dentro.. se trata de cómo dos personas rotas pueden encontrar la forma de sanarse, no “arreglándose” el uno al otro, sino nomás estando ahí, aceptándose.. yo le doy a Memory un 8/10.. quizás no es la octava maravilla en fotografía o edición, pero la fuerza del guion y, sobre todo, las actuaciones MONUMENTALES de Chastain y Sarsgaard la convierten en algo de verdad especial, de esas que no se te olvidan. Y miren, hasta les voy a dar un consejo que casi nunca doy: si pueden, intenten ver esta película solos, claro que está chido verla con alguien, pero creo que vivirla uno solo tiene algo bien poderoso. Te da chance de quedarte pensando en el camino a casa, de dejar que las emociones te lleguen y de sacar tus propias conclusiones.. es un regalazo de película, una de esas joyitas chiquitas, calladas, pero hechas con un montón de corazón, y la verdad, merece que la vean.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy, cuidense mucho!
