Here we go with my third spoiler free review, this time its gonna be Mr. Sunshine.
It is a Korean series that launched in 2018 on Netflix, the show did got insane ratings on all platforms like imdb (8.7), mydramalist(8.8) which is very close to being 9 and honestly 9 one those sites is considered a top peak. This directors working on this series are the same ones that were working on Guardian: The Lonely and Great God and the overall production looks, sounds like they had a lot of budget for this production which I believe is true, because the quality of that show is outstanding. I will quickly show you who is responsible for this series and what genre it is:Screenwriter: Kim Eun Sook
Director: Lee Eung Bok, Jang Young Woo
Genres: Military, Historical, Romance, Melodrama
For a long time I wasn't convienced to watch this because of the Military,Historical genres which I never liked this much. But this show changed my mindset. It was a complete masterpiece.
What is Mr. Sunshine About?
This show plays in a Korea Joseon era. It is based on a history and it mainly shows the occupation of Korea by Japan. It stars with a kid called Choi Yu Jin (Eugene Choi). Back then Korea had a very weak king, who couldn't protect his own country, this lead to death of Choi Yu Jin parents. He managed to escape Korea and he sailed to the US. He became a marine officer for the US forces. His US name was Eugune Choi and fter years of living in US, he treats it like his real home. He calls himself "American" not "Korean". After many years he goes back to his homeland Korea(Joseon) together with other marine members, but Joseon is under occupation. Japan is basically ruling Korea. He falls in love with a noble woman Go Ae Sin, but he quickly realizes that she is a rebel who refuses to accept Japan’s occupation of Korea. Can Joseon be saved? Can their love be succesful ? A woman who wields a gun because she refuses to accept Japan occupation of Korea and a former Korean who is now a US marine officer. Will their love work? Will the country (Korea-Joseon) survive? The war has begun, war for the Korea independence and for the love. Why do I love this series?
As allways my first points is the same, and probably will be for all Korean series. It is again the soundtrack. Truly amazing music that fits very well in all kind of moments.
The second thing is the budget. This doesn't happen in all korean series. I think Mr.Sunshine had insane budget, because the quality of image, quality of music, quality of actors, quality of everything is TOP. I can honestly say - I watched over 100 Korean series and this one has the BEST quality of production.
Just imagine this scenery, in FULL HD, or 4K. With soundtrack and character voices. Insane. Such a vibe.Another thing is the characters speak multiple languages. Did you notice that usually in Korean series, Asians can't really speak English well, also other languages, but here most Korean actors speak perfect Korean,English,Japanese and some even French. It is a historical series, which includes many countries War between Korea and Russia, occupation of Korea by Japan, some France spy's. Thats why there is so many characters speaking different languages well. It also adds a lot of plot twist to the story, for example: Eugune Choi knew all 3 languages (Japanese,Korean,English) so he could choose when to speak which language to change the outcome of conversation or to conspire against someone.

It is not a typical Korean Love Story. It evoles war, cruelty, multiple cultures. Thats why the love between Eugune Choi and Go Ae Sin is so complicated and so it is interesting to watch. Go Ae Sin isn't a typical cute Korean girl and Eugune Choi isn't a typical Korean boy. Their love wasn't the only one, there were some more people who falled in love. I wonder how they all ended up? Falling in love in a war times can be hard.

Gu Dong Mae - this character was my favorite in this series, he is written so well and the actor (Yoo Yeon Seok) playing him did insane job. I'm not saying other actors didn't but I think Yoo Yeon Seok playing Gu Dong Mae character did outstanding performance. He plays a classic Japanese Samurai and that was the best Samurai I ever seen in my life.

Cruelty and Blood - yes. This series is cruel, there is a lot of blood and scenes are not censored. In most Korea series they try to censor cruelty, but here it is on another level. Literally showing piles of dead bodies. Because of that the vibe is insane. When some character cry. You can really feel them.

This is a little bit about point 6 which is cruelty and blood, but not only. The whole scenery is insane. Not only because its bloody, the views are insane. The series shows some America, some Korea and some Japan. The action happening in 3 countries allows us to see many beautiful places of the world.

The plot twist - it is so good here, especially durning war times, there is so many conspiracy, plot twists, betrayals. You never really know whats gonna happen. When I first started episode one I had no idea whats going on, there were already so many plot twists in the story, but as you watch for longer, everything starts to make sense and you understand why the story goes this way, you understand why someone choosed this over this, why did this decision over this. The story is insane here in this series.
I think I cannot say much more without spoilers, thats why I will end here as I want to keep the review spoiler free. I've been watching this series on a big TV when I was visiting my cousin on Mallorca and honestly this was so fun. When I was traveling through Mallorca I allways thought about comming back home to see some more episodes haha. I recommand everyone to watch this show on Netflix, especially if you are interested in the Korea history and the times were Korea was occupied by Japan. As allways I will end the post with my personal score:
Soundtracks: 10
Characters: 10
Story: 10
Scenery: 10
Making it overall a 10/10.
Thanks for giving me an opportunity to write about this beautiful series and see you in my next posts!
